Crowley Info Compilation part 17: Vil and Secrets

Crowley may have a vested interest in Pomefiore/the Fairest Queen over the others and, possibly, in Vil: when the seven statues are toppled during Halloween Crowley speaks of the flagrant disrespect overall at first, but the only one he comments on specifically is the fairest queen, saying, "The Fairest Queen's statue, lying prone like some common pauper?!"

Crowley has said that he loves "sparkly things like gems and precious metals!" and Vil will sometimes fill the area he is in with sparkles.

This may be related to why Crowley is stunned speechless upon seeing Vil at the start of Halloween (Vil: "As you should be").

Crowley is delighted by his own decision to put Vil in charge of production for the VDC after seeing the team rehearse.

Vil says, "But of course. What do you take me for?" and Crowley responds, "What I've always taken you for: a leading global talent--no, correction--the houswarden of Pomefiore, our campus' most historic and beautiful dorm."

Vil may be less inclined towards Crowley than Crowley is towards him: when Crowley tries to retire Malleus into the hall of fame in Book 2, Vil says the decision "reeks of some kind of unconscious bias," which he despises.

(Crowley might be fond of Spelldrive in general: he has a voice line about staying up late to watch it on TV.)

Crowley reacts dramatically in Book 2 when discussing Riddle's overblot, randomly yelling aloud and surprising Grim.

In an interview from the fanbook Twst composure Ozawa Takumi comments that Crowley is her favorite character and she loves his "play-acting," and I have never been able to get over it.

There is very clearly much going on with Crowley that we do not know, and the question of how much is "play-acting" and how much (if anything) is not is fascinating.

During Halloween, for example, Jade says, "Is there some reason (Crowley) wouldn't want the police sniffing around? A secret he doesn't want them to unearth, perhaps?"

And Crowley's secrets come up again in Book 4: when Azul is pretending to be hypnotized, Jamil asks him if he happens to know Crowley's secrets. Azul says that he does: he knows one thing that Crowley would never want others to learn.

Azul was not truly hypnotized at the time and may have been just making things up, but it is interesting that Jamil, at least, seems wholly convinced that Crowley is hiding something dire.

Sunny Voyage 2023 + Dominion 2023 Match Predictions

Checking at my clock and right now it's about 3:30 in the morning meaning I have about two hours to do all these predictions so here we go with predictions for "Sunny Voyage 2023 in Shinjuku FACE" and "Dominion 6.4 in Osaka-Jo Hall".

Let's start off with "Sunny Voyage 2023 in Shinjuku FACE" which is headlined by an intense main event that could result in KO or too many kicks to count. Anyway, here we go with the predictions for "Sunny Voyage 2023 in Shinjuku FACE"

Opening Match: Taishi Ozawa vs. Manabu Soya Prediction: Too easy of a win here. Going with Manabu Soya for the win

Match #2: Shuji Kondo, Hiroki, and Hajime Ohara vs. Yoshinari Ogawa, Chris Ridgeway, and Daga Prediction: Based on all that's been going on lately, I'm sensing another win for Stinger most likely in dominant fashion.

Match #3: Stallion Rogers vs. Sean Legacy Prediction: Sean has so far impressed me. He's got that potential. Stallion Rogers is okay but have yet to sense the potential I've been sensing in Sean Legacy so going with Legacy for the win.

Match #4: Dante Leon and Junta Miyawaki vs. HAYATA and Eita Prediction: Intriguing match here as we saw something we didn't expect, HAYATA and Eita teaming up. This is their biggest test but with them facing Dante Leon, it'll be a tall order. Most new teams don't win their first match together but based on the build here, I could sense HAYATA and Eita winning. Either that or Dante shows us all he'll do whatever it takes to become GHC Junior Heavyweight Champion once again.

Match #5: Akitoshi Saito, Shuhei Taniguchi, Mohammed Yone, Naomichi Marufuji, and Takashi Sugiura vs. Yoshiki Inamura, Daiki Inaba, Masa Kitamiya, Kaito Kiyomiya, and Go Shiozaki. Prediction: Crazy match that is just thrown together. Barely a storyline or build going into this match. So my prediction is a wild a crazy one. Got two predictions here. Sugiura will get the win by pinning Inaba but will get attacked by Jake Lee afterwards. Or Kiyomiya will get the win by pinning Mohammed Yone sending a clear message to Kazuchika Okada who has problems with not just Kiyomiya but with those in his own company that are all around the same age as him (Ren Narita and Shota Umino)

Semi-Final Match: GHC Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship: Atsushi Kotoge/Seiki Yoshioka (Challenger Team) vs. Tadasuke/YO-HEY (Champion Team) Prediction: I originally predicted the challengers to win but based on the fact NJPW did a retweet of this match alone and the fact that neither GLG or Just 5 Guys have been booked yet for "All Together Again" I expect the champions to retain and a surprise confrontation post-match.

Main Event Match: Special Singles Match: Katsuhiko Nakajima vs. Kenoh Prediction: This will be the third match of Nakajima/Kenoh I get to see live. First one was the N1 Victory 2021 finals where Nakajima won with a new move that has barely been seen since that victory. Last one was an intense 60-minute draw which turned out to be the first one I saw in any wrestling format since June 11, 2017 when Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada went the full distance. So...here, feel like and I've been saying this since the match has been made. Nakajima has to win. While with AXIZ, the two matches both him and Kenoh had ended with KO declaring Kenoh the winner. When he joined Kongo in August 2020, Nakajima unleashed a vicious side of himself and dominated against Kenoh to win their N1 Victory 2020 Block Match. Now that he's back with AXIZ, he has to prove that he made the right choice. If Nakajima cannot beat Kenoh as an AXIZ member, many people will be asking questions so in this main event, I'm going with Katsuhiko Nakajima for the win.

With the match predictions for "Sunny Voyage 2023 in Shinjuku FACE" done, it's now time to turn over to "Dominion 2023 in Osaka-Jo Hall" taking place this Sunday June 4, 2023.

Opening Match: Special Singles Match: Lance Archer vs. Will Ospreay Prediction: Winner here will get a shot at the IWGP United States Championship most likely at "The Forbidden Door". And with the way things are going, I see Will Ospreay emerging victorious but at what cost remains to be seen.

Match #2: Tetsuya Naito, Shingo Takagi, BUSHI, and Titan vs. Taichi, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, DOUKI, and Taka Michinoku Prediction: As we await the status of a possible new LIJ member in Yota Tsuji, 4 of the 5 current LIJ members face 4 of the 5 Just 5 Guys members and to me, this one is too easy. I see a LIJ win with Tetsuya Naito most likely pinning Taka Michinoku

Match #3: IWGP Junior Tag Team Championship: Francesco Akira/TJP (Challenger Team) vs. Kevin Knight/KUSHIDA (Champion Team) Prediction: I'm sensing this to be a big night for the United Empire so going with new champions in Catch 2/2.

Match #4: NJPW World TV Championship: Jeff Cobb (Challenger) vs. Zac Sabre Jr. (Champion) Prediction: Last match, these two went the full distance (15 minutes) so there has to be a winner here within that 15-minute frame. Like I said, sensing a big night for the United Empire so...going with Jeff Cobb for the win here.

Match #5: Match to determine the 99th IWGP Tag Team Champions and the 4th NJPW Strong Tag Team Champions: Great O-Khan and Aaron Henare vs. EVIL and Yujiro Takahashi vs. Hirooki Goto and YOSHI-HASHI Prediction: Very hard one to predict. Originally had predict Aussie Open to retain but when they pulled out, went with Bishamon but with YOSHI-HASHI's recent comments, have this wild prediction. Bishamon will win only if Hirooki Goto gets the winning pin. Other than that, United Empire will complete the sweep and leave Osaka with gold all over.

Match #6: NEVER Openweight Championship Match: El Phantasmo (Challenger) vs. David Finlay (Champion) Prediction: This match alone may reach Nakajima/Kenoh levels or something darker. Though I'll be rooting for El Phantasmo, I sadly see David Finlay retaining and how he retains could be worse than how he beat Tama Tonga for the title at "Wrestling Dontaku 2023"

Match #8: NEVER 6-man Tag Team Championship: Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, and Shota Umino (Challenger Team) vs. Kazuchika Okada, Tomohiro Ishii, and Hiroshi Tanahashi (Champion Team) Prediction: Kazuchika Okada can easily handle Kaito Kiyomiya (who's looking to avenge his loss on June 9th in Ryogoku). Okada can handle Ren Narita easily. But...when it comes to Shota Umino. I said this on social media this past weekend and saying it here again...everytime Okada is under the impression that he can handle Shota Umino easily, seems like Umino is one or two steps ahead of him and I feel like that 6-man tag in Long Beach, CA changed Umino to the man we're seeing now. So...my prediction for this match is we're getting new champions. BCC going to take the 6-man titles hostage.

Semi-Main Event: IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship: Master Wato (Challenger/BOSJ 30 Winner) vs. Hiromu Takahashi (Champion) Prediction: A hard one to predict but right now going with Master Wato for the win. It's his hometown and most times, the hometown hero always wins.

Main Event: IWGP World Heavyweight Championship: Yota Tsuji (Challenger) vs. SANADA (Champion) Prediction: Hardest title match to predict in a long time even if this will be Tsuji's first match back from excursion. My prediction on this main event will shock you. I'm going with the time-limit draw. We'll most likely see our first 60-minute draw in 6 years.

So...there you have it. My predictions for today's "Sunny Voyage 2023 in Shinjuku FACE" which starts about a hour from now (5:30 AM Eastern) and my predictions for Sunday's "Dominion 6.4 in Osaka-Jo Hall".

30 years after his last visit to Japan, John Williams has returned for a special concert – making his debut with the world-famous Saito Kinen Orchestra in renditions of his beloved film scores and reuniting with his longtime friend, world-renowned conductor Seiji Ozawa. Captured live on record at Suntory Hall last year, ‘John Williams in Tokyo’ is set to be released by Deutsche Grammophon on 3 May and follows his acclaimed concert albums, ‘The Berlin Concert’ and ‘John Williams in Vienna’, which topped charts around the globe.

With its well-earned jubilant organ-enriched finale, I don’t need to explain why Saint-Saëns 3rd belongs on a #holidayplaylist. But the history of this particular recording is fascinating and potentially disturbing.

Let’s start with the dates and places: The orchestra was recorded in June and November of 1985 at Salle Wagram. The organ was recorded almost exactly a year after the first orchestra sessions at the Chartres Cathedral. This isn’t the first recording of the symphony to record the organ and orchestra at separate venues, but a year apart? There must have been some logistical nightmare here. And this is where it gets interesting.

By 1985, Ozawa was 12 years into his tenure as the music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Unlike Salle Wagram, Boston Symphony Hall has a magnificent organ. That organ had already been used in a successful recording of Saint-Saënt’s 3rd led by Charles Munch. The orchestra was deeply steeped in French tradition. A year earlier, EMI, the same label that produced this recording, released another recording with Ozawa and the BSO. So the inescapable question is: why did EMI record Saint-Saëns’s organ symphony with Orchestre National de France, which does not have an organ, instead of with Boston Symphony Orchestra which does?

Alas, the most obvious answer I can come up with is that without a French orchestra, some feared a recording lead by Ozawa wouldn’t be “authentic” enough or “French” enough, raising troubling racial implications. Ozawa’s photo is nowhere to be found on the front or back cover of the original record. I wonder why.

I hope my conjecture is wrong, but I don’t have a better explanation. The organ is mixed in pretty surgically - it’s only heard when it needs to be and only as softly as the music allows. The muddiness of the reverberant cathedral acoustics is thus avoided. And the orchestra gives Ozawa a heartfelt performance… but it’s still not the same as having the orchestra and the organ really play together.

Niigata City History Museum: Minatopia *Activity Archive*

Last month during Golden Week, I didn’t travel outside of Niigata, but I still made the most of my time by visiting several places in the city. One place that I’d been wanting to go to was the Niigata City History Museum, also known as Minatopia. Minatopia, as its more formal name would suggest, is a museum focused on the history of Niigata all the way from the Jomon period to modern times.

From the minute you step onto the grounds of the museum, you’re struck by the history of the place. The first building you see is a beautiful old red and white building which you walk through to get to the museum grounds. This is the former customs building, and includes some free areas where you can read about Niigata and rest. There are also several other historical buildings on the grounds, each marked by a sign with a description (in Japanese, but that’s what Google translate is for). They even have some cool water features and tons of beautiful plants if you go in the spring or summer, which, along with the view of the Shinano river, makes for some beautiful scenery.

The Niigata City History Museum itself is the biggest building on the grounds, with the only other one coming close being the hall right across from it that has bathrooms and a restaurant (which looked temporarily closed when I went). The museum almost looks like a palace or a government building with its high ivory walls, simple designs, and mock columns. While it’s free to roam the grounds, Minatopia has an admission fee of 300 yen for the regular exhibit about Niigata on the second floor. Or, for 400 yen you can get a combination ticket to the museum and the Ozawa family residence, an old merchant's house a 15 minute walk away. Minatopia also has a rotating special exhibit on the first floor, but the price for that is separate and depends on the exhibit.

Once upstairs, you can scan a QR code to access both English and Chinese guided tours, as long as you don’t miss the paper like I did the first time. Each section has a number that you can use to listen to the right explanation. However, even if you miss the translated guided tour like me, you can still have fun. You might want to translate some of the explanations, but there’s plenty to simply look at too, including old artifacts, replicas of artifacts or places, and videos about how things were made. One side takes you through a timeline of Niigata from the Jomon period to the late 1900s, while the other side dives deeper into the lifestyle of people in Niigata before modern times. Plus, your regular admissions ticket also allows you to see some of the showings at the museum theater to learn more. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to see any this time, so I can’t be sure whether the short movies are all in Japanese or if there are any subtitles.

The Niigata City History Museum is great for a couple hours of fun looking at the history of the city. There’s a lot to see and do for a pretty good price. I spent a good two hours walking around on the grounds and the regular exhibit before I had run off for lunch, but you could easily spend an entire afternoon. And if you’re worried about young kids finding it boring, there’s even an “experience room” for kids on the first floor too. Minatopia is open everyday except Mondays, though if Monday is a holiday, it’s closed on Tuesday instead, so people can go see the museum on their days off. If you’re interested in the general history of Niigata City or have some time to kill, this is definitely the place to go.

What are YOUR training objectives for the upcoming year?

Sure, this is the sort of click-bait title you expected to see along with a flurry of "new year new you" self-improvement e-mails the moment January 1st rolls around. Well, the joke is on you because you can begin a new year of training any time you want. 

In this post I'll break down my own approach to answering the titular question.

We all have different reasons for coming to the fencing hall and a variety of ambitions that result in our sticking around. As a teacher at Gotham Swords I want to do my part in helping everyone achieve their goals. 

Want to incorporate more cardio? 

Get more into free-play fencing?

Sharpen your skills for an upcoming competition?

Introspection

It would be unfitting of me to ask everyone to engage in this deeply personal exercise without participating in it myself...

My goals this year are:

Work towards being more concise in my teaching

Be more analytical and reflective of my personal time in the fencing hall.

Work on the "openings" I'm creating and consider more often "the etiquette of the heart".

Some of this likely comes off as a little vague, so here, without much filter is the motivation: 

My earnest study of martial arts began amid a difficult period of my life. The ability to focus on training helped me bare the misery I was experiencing at the time.  During this period I trained with a mindset geared towards competition. However, the ensuing years have substantially challenged that approach. I will speak to some of the details in a later post, but for an assortment of reasons I have reached a point in which tournaments have become difficult to attend.

Yet, I still train every day.

Why? Because I believe there is something deeper and more meaningful to the art of swordplay. I will address it in greater detail in a later post, but to paraphrase one-a-many coaching books: It's an internal game as much as it is external. There is a formal etiquette and approach to what we do in our fencing hall, but there is also “the etiquette of the heart,” which is to approach swordplay with an open and frank attitude with the aim of self-improvement.

I wanted to share this, admittedly extensive quote from Hiroshi Ozawa Sensei, which I believe sums up the sentiment pretty well:

"Swordplay involves putting on your uniform and practicing with a partner. The relationship between you and your partner may be thought of as one in which each person discovers their own particular weak points through an exchange of strikes and thrusts. When you receive a strike, it should make you aware that you have a weak spot in that particular place.

Being on the receiving end of a strike, however, will inevitably make you feel disappointed and consequently practice can turn quite rough. As a result, more openings to attacks will appear, causing you even more problems and leaving you open to even more strikes. You must always take care that this does not happen. Paradoxically, successful swordplay depends on your ability to keep up a fighting spirit while continually showing appropriate respect to your partner. Your swordplay will become very unbalanced if one of these complementary elements is missing. Observance of etiquette helps you make the most of practice, and find the beauty in fencing. When you receive a strike, it is because there is an opening. You opponent draws your attention to your weak spots, and you endeavor to ensure that you do not receive a strike in the same place again. Through endless repetition and practice, the openings will gradually disappear. No one can ever rest on their laurels, however, even when they have reached the top level: because in swordplay there is always unlimited room for improvement."

Gerry Mack RIP

Abby and I visited Nancy and Gerry yesterday afternoon. I was able to tell him how much knowing him and working with him and singing with him had meant to me and so many of us. I reflected on the literally millions of people that had been touched by his performances and those of his many students and their many students. And I told him we’ll always laugh and sing beneath God’s clear, blue sky.

He passed away peacefully this morning.

Dr. Gerald R. Mack, 2014 recipient of the Alfred Nash Patterson Lifetime Achievement Award, is a nationally-known conductor, educator, and mentor. He was conductor of the Worcester Chorus in Massachusetts for 28 years (1977–2005), founder and leader for 15 years (1995–2000) of the Great Waters Music Festival in Wolfeboro, NH, and Director of Choral Activities and a faculty member for 27 years at the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford, Connecticut.

After retiring to Nantucket in 1999, he became the Executive Director of the Nantucket Community Music Center; he later established the Nantucket Art Council's highly successful winter concert series. The Worcester Chorus established a scholarship in his name in 2010.Dr. Mack has worked with Gunther Schuller, Yehudi Menuin, Michael Lancaster, Seiji Ozawa, and Aaron Copland, among others. His choruses have performed at Carnegie Hall, Tully Hall, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Jordan Hall, and Washington’s National Cathedral, as well as at many of the great concert halls of Europe. 

He has conducted at the New York Mostly Mozart Festival, the Salzburg Music Festival, the International Dubrovnik Music Festival, and the Oaxaca Spring Festival (with the Mexican National Symphony).A dedicated educator with a deep commitment to colleagues and students, Dr. Mack has a national reputation as an adjudicator, lecturer, clinician and guest conductor. His high school choirs appeared at numerous MENC conventions (of the National Association for Music Education). 

In 1961, his school chorus was invited to represent the U.S. at the International Music Educators’ Convention in Vienna. His Hartt choral groups were frequently selected to appear at American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) conventions throughout the U.S., and he conducted many All State and Divisional Festival Choruses. While at Hartt, he organized and hosted the first ACDA Eastern Division Convention.

One product of his involvement with the Connecticut Commission on the Arts was the Greater Hartford Youth Chorale, which Dr. Mack and his wife organized for the first annual Hartford Arts Festival. That initiative became an ongoing program which continued for 10 years, providing special musical opportunities for suburban and inner-city young people from 22 high schools in the Hartford area.

Dr. Mack has degrees in Music Education and choral conducting from the University of New York at Fredonia (bachelors) and from Columbia University (masters and doctorate).

New Predictions for "Green Journey 2023 in Nagoya"

Back on June 5th, I made my official predictions for Pro Wrestling NOAH's "Green Journey 2023 in Nagoya" (click here to read those original predictions which does include the match card for the NJPW event taking place that very same day) . Due to the injury though to Junta Miyawaki that occurred at "All Together Again" last Friday, I'm making down below a new prediction list here. Some predictions could remain the same while other will change.

With that said, here is the new set of match result predictions for "Green Journey 2023 in Nagoya"

Opening Match prediction: When I originally made this match prediction, I said I was going with the team of Mohammed Yone, Super Crazy, and Alejandro for the win. But since this match has been changed and moved from the #2 position to the opening position, my prediction has changed. Going with Akitoshi Saito, Stallion Rogers, and Seiki Yoshioka with the win as Taishi Ozawa will be pinned in the new opening bout.

Match #2 prediction: What was the original opening match is now the second match and right now...my prediction for this one stays the same. Hiroki already lost to Kenoh in dominating fashion. I don't expect the same here but I do expect Hajime Ohara to come out victorious over the former Kongo member.

Match #3 Prediction: When this match was originally announced as Kaito Kiyomiya, Junta Miyawaki, and AMAKUSA vs. Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. , Yoshinari Ogawa, and Kai Fujimura; my first impression was this could be a preview to who the next challenger would be for the GHC National Championship. Then when Kaito Kiyomiya was announced for NJPW's G1 Climax 33 starting on July 15th; kind of leaned towards his team winning so that he can make a statement. Now...with this match being changed and moved, the prediction for this one does not change. I expect Kaito Kiyomiya, AMAKUSA, and Super Crazy (who is replacing Miyawaki in this match) to win with Kiyomiya sending a strong message to Yota Tsuji who is claiming that Kiyomiya is somewhat weak. In this match, the Supernova will send a strong message to "Gene Blast" and that message is...don't underestimate the power of Pro Wrestling NOAH.

Match #4 Prediction: Another original prediction that'll somewhat remain the same. Hideaki Suzuki still wins in dominating fashion and should Jake Lee emerge victorious in the main event, could be the next challenger for the GHC Heavyweight Championship.

Match #5 Prediction: Consider this one to now be a match under the radar for once it was announced, has barely been talked about. The prediction here remains somewhat the same. Eita and Marufuji with the surprise victory as the crumbling of Atsushi Kotoge continues.

Match #6 Prediction: The original prediction for this match also remains the same with YO-HEY getting pinned here instead of Tadasuke. Jack Morris will show a strong performance but it'll be Chris Ridgeway and Daga that'll have the last word in this next to last tune-up match before June 22nd.

Match #7 Prediction: My original prediction for this match was AXIZ was going to win and as of right now, that prediction stays the same. The question now is will this match continue the downfall of Kenoh now that he has not had to witness 3 departures from Kongo but now is coming to Nagoya with no gold around his waist. This match is one that has to be must-see and must-win for Go Shiozaki here and in Korakuen Hall on June 22nd. Again, he's never beaten Kenoh in singles competition and with the way Kenoh is now...got the feeling this is the once chance that AXIZ has to take advantage of. Again...the original prediction here remains the same. Just going to be interesting on the mindset of Kenoh and Manabu Soya who have to rebound after losing the AJPW World Tag Team Titles 2 nights before.

Match #8 Prediction: Still a hard match to predict but based on what I read and heard from Dante Leon, it's kind of clear to me who'll win this match. HAYATA has stated that this match will truly decide who is the GHC Junior Heavyweight Champion. If HAYATA wins, then it'll be him. If Dante wins, then it'll be him. As of right now, I can't see HAYATA retaining because there's this sense that Dante has something in his back pocket. Feel like tomorrow, a new Junior Champion will be crowned in Nagoya.

Semi-main Event match Prediction: Though this match is still hard to predict, I'm sticking with my original prediction here in which we're getting new Tag Team Champions. Feel like it's time for Yoshiki Inamura to become Champion though there's the feeling that this reign could be short-lived because I feel like whoever wins between AXIZ and Kongo two matches earlier will be next in line and many including myself are ready for another AXIZ Tag title reign. Again, Kitamiya and Inamura with the win but their reign will be very short.

Main Event Prediction: The original prediction for this match was Jake Lee over Takashi Sugiura. Despite the encouraging words Sugiura received from Shinjiro Otani and the overwhelming praise heading into this match, I'm still going with the result. Still feel like nothing will stop Jake Lee until the N-1 Victory 2023 begins this August. And...again, whoever wins this match, believe their next challenger will be Hideaki Suzuki.
