My personal ranking of the the LI's reactions to the upcoming battle

I know I would be a damn mess about all the near-death experiences and want to talk about it. So I've ranked all of our love interests by how well I think they handled your character's obvious trauma!

Starting with the worst...

Pros: Mal, I appreciate that you don't want me to die and want to protect me.

Cons: My guy. My actual primary love interest. I get that you're depressed. I appreciate the honesty. But this is just more pressure! Now I'm responsible for both of our lives!

Pros: Aerin, it's nice that you're not also freaking out. Not about this anyway. That is reassuring. Fighting for the people we care about and each other are strong motivations I can get behind.

Cons: You do not at any point ask if I'm okay. Maybe you don't realize how bad things have been, or you feel like you have no right to ask. And I also don't love 'we might all die tomorrow' coming out mid-make out and immediately before asking if we should take things further. You can just make the offer! Don't act like you wouldn't be into it regardless!

Pros: Valax, I appreciate that you want me to fight back against you. The fact that you wish things were different makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. There are some big obstacles here and I acknowledge that. And you apologize for causing some of the trauma!

Cons: I don't love the energy that we can't figure out a solution. I get that you're very stuck in one way of thinking, but this seems like a great moment to figure something out other than 'We'll wait and see which one of us dies.'

Pros: Nia, I'm very glad you don't want to lose me. And I appreciate the acknowledgment that something might actually manage to kill me this time. I'm perfectly happy be scared together.

Cons: This scene is mostly about making her feel better. Which is fine, a lot of them are. And it's partially MC's fault for not having an option to say, "I'm scared too." But not my favorite.

Pros: Tyril, this is some solid reassurance. You'll be there with me. I'll gladly take that as comfort. Just being with me is probably the best thing to do. It's very practical and in-character.

Cons: I'm slightly confused how you thought armies worked prior to this, but we can get into that another day. As always, you could stand to ask about my feelings more.

Pros: Imtura, I love you. I am so enamored with the way you acknowledge that we could die while not being worried about it. Incredibly reassuring once we get into it.

Cons: You're not in a place to be 100% supportive because you've got your own stuff. But that's life! Overall, excellent work.

With Blades 2 coming to an end, I just wanna get it off my chest that I'm really not a fan of how they wrote Nia for a great part of this one, particularly vis-à-vis the way they wrote MC. I know I've been saying some stuff along those lines for ages now, but it hasn't left my mind so now I'm gonna actually get into it.

For starters, I think a lot of the issue with Nia's writing was captured pretty well in the tags of this post, particularly on point 2. Like I've said, Nia unfortunately falls into the category of a Mary Sue in that every "flaw" she's given just serves to elevate her to perfection. Hell, even when corrupted—when a person is supposed to be in their most volatile state—the worst she does is be snarky that first chapter (she is aggressive toward MC at one point before this, but it's neither acknowledged nor repeated later). After that, she is entirely normal, just not as much of a pushover, and while I much preferred shadow!Nia, I do think that this really undermines the whole gravity of corruption and b2's emphasis on shadow-light balance, since shadow!Nia comes off as quite balanced already, especially compared to other corrupted characters we've seen.

But here's the thing, that post that got me thinking is months old, and we have gotten more story since then, and what I have noticed is that Nia does, in fact, have one real flaw in canon, but it's the one flaw she's absolutely not meant to have: Nia in canon can at times come off as self-absorbed. She either makes things about herself or doesn't stop people from doing this, and there are multiple examples of it. There is the instance in Riverbend when MC is taking a moment to finally try to process Kade's capture (which, following their own capture, they never got the chance to process) and Nia derails the conversation and makes it about her own grief and is comforted by MC and Mal. Another example is the moment on Gerhard's ship when she vents about the pressure she's been under and lets MC comfort her without at any point considering that MC might have been under similar pressure.

And don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a character putting themselves first. But when the book doesn't waste a single chance to tell us that Nia's character is the complete opposite and that she is chronically incapable of not being considerate 25/8, it's quite contradictory. I mean, you can even call out Ethan Ramsey, PB's golden boy, on making things about himself at some point in OH, but because, unlike Ethan, Nia is written for you to consider her super sweet and wholesome and perfect, the Blades MC actually contributes to this by performing mental gymnastics to turn something around to be about Nia.

Which brings me to my final point: Blades 2 pushed MC to the side to revolve around Nia, but MC is exactly the person they meant for Nia to be, by virtue of the dissonance between showing and telling. They tell you that Nia is selfless because she always puts everyone else first. Well, I can and did name examples showing the contrary, meanwhile, MC is the one who was been through the most traumatic ordeal and is constantly checking in on everyone else without expecting and without receiving much of the same courtesy in return, even apologizing to Nia because she was "carrying all that weight on her own", never mind that MC always has the weight of the world on their shoulders. They tell you that Nia is the heart of the party, but they both told and showed us that everything fell apart without MC.

Even some of Nia's most defining character traits, MC has in similar measure. Nia sees the best in everyone? MC can be the #1 believer in Aerin's redemption after all the shit he pulled. Nia is trusting to the point of naivete? MC literally trusted Valax while she outright told them at every turn she would turn on them at the first opportunity, and was genuinely hurt by the betrayal. Miss me with MC calling Nia "our better self".

Every trait that they've gone out of their way to tell you Nia has they've shown twofold in MC, which is why it's so exasperating to me that they reduced MC to the conduct through which other characters' (particularly Nia's) stories get told while their own is an afterthought. I am by no means saying that two people can't have similar traits or that two people can't be good people at the same time, but there is something about praising these traits in Nia when, based on these, MC should be held to a similar standard. Instead, they relegated MC (main. character.) to a supporting character in Nia's story, elevating every trait that MC possesses only in Nia while ignoring them in MC to the point that many scenes felt frustrating to play.

#it's not that she's a bad character but I do resent making her the protagonist of b2 at the expense of MC #I really hope MC gets their flowers in b3 and the chance to really be in the spotlight because this aspect of b2 was not it #I do like that she had the whole light v shadow thing going on and got to be super powerful and I think her arc was overall good though #it's just those other things that bug me

i don't think i've ever said this about choices before but wow this really was the ladies' chapter and i for one am thrilled. we didn't get a lot of imtura as usual but what we did get I was very happy with. i've said this before but i'm loving seeing imtura growing more confident (more than she was in book 1, even) and stepping into the leadership role she was always perfect for but never confident enough to really take. of course she was the wraith's captain but i think this is the first time we're seeing imtura really plan in detail what they're going to do, take charge of the group. she's not asking and she's not apologetic but not imposing either, listening to ideas and adjusting accordingly. she's a great leader and it's so nice to see her really grow into that role, especially since her main conflict in book 2 has been about feeling like she's not good enough to be anything other than the brawns. she has 100% been the brains of the team these last few chapters, and she doesn't even seem to realize she's doing it. it's great to see. i'm also liking seeing her slowly repair her dynamic with mal. i've written before about how mal and imtura have always been the only ones who get each other in the group, and how falling out must have been devastating to both of them. and now we're starting to see them slowly fall back into their groove, teasing each other but still with a lot of respect, and slowly starting to get over the hurt they both put on each other. although i wish it was being addressed more directly, i'm still loving it. and of course, their consistent reminders that her most important value is equality - you share the wealth, share the food, take care of each other. that's the kind of leader she is, in direct opposition of her mother who wished to centralize everything and institute hierarchy. imtura is an orc to the bone, free and strong but caring and believing in equality, and i love seeing that being consitently shown these last few chapters. also, her dancing scene was so fucking sweet

valax is simply the love of my life. and we got TWO separate chances to make out with her. the world is a beautiful place. but more than that, we are getting to know her better, and reconcile the valax we first met with the valax we saw at ironbreach. i like how they're not at odds, and although there's the obvious, well, brainwashing aspect, she is violent because she's kind and cares about her people. by which i mean lines like this:

it's not at all unlike what MC is doing. as much as everyone MC kills or incapacitates or whatever is some faceless rando, they're still essentialy waging war for what they believe in. and i like that. as i've said before, my favorite thing about blades 2 is how it's been unraveling all of the myths from book 1, showing the other side. history is written by the victors and all that, and i think book 2 is really showing how it's important to question those nationalistic myths where everything on your side is good, the other is bad, etc. and valax telling us about how the Light Realm fucked the Shadow Realm over adds to that, which makes valax an important part of the plot not only as a villain or potential love interest but also as an important source of information about the worldbuilding and what the other side is like. at the same time, we got to see her being conflicted - admitting that she's naive, starting to question the state of the army, betraying MC but also apologizing for it - and just overall a complex person/villain. we got more backstory, more of her motivations, more glimpses of Shadow Realm history, truly we got everything from valax this chapter

i also love how her betrayal was not only inevitable but also due to a fundamental flaw in nia's plan: assuming valax would choose self-preservation over completing her mission and helping her people. it'd be a safe bet to make with pretty much anyone else, but we've seen enough of valax to know that it definitely doesn't apply to her - she has never lived for herself, she doesn't exist for herself, and so she was always going to bid her time until she could go through the pain to complete the mission. that might be the most fundamental part of her character, and it is both shown very well and given even more important narrative weight in this scene

and at the risk of sounding like a hater, this was the first chapter where i truly felt like they were going somewhere interesting with nia's arc. i have a lot of sympathy for her book 1 arc - realizing she has been groomed, trying to reclaim her faith - but she still has always kind of felt one dimensional to me. this chapter was the first time we got to see more of nia; we even had it be implied that at least part of her always being cheery and put-together is a facade. more than just turning her back on the temple this is the first time she is turning her back on the shitty parts of what they taught her - that she doesn't matter, that she lives only for the light, that she can't have needs and desires of her own. all in all, she needs catharsis, and if it's the shadow form that gives her that, then cheers! but regardless of how you feel about shadow!nia i think we can agree that it's giving us more and better glimpses into nia as a character who feels a lot of pain and immense pressure to be good while also trying to figure out which parts of her upbringing she needs to unlearn and which she gets to keep, deal with the grief of losing MC and watching her friend group fall apart, and trying to be a rock for them through it all, then immediately dealing with another world-shattering threat while also trying to hide a part of her for a good portion of it. i've seen a lot f people complain about how no one noticed shadow!nia before and MC was forced to keep that secret but i think it's a good analogy to how there are parts of nia that no one sees, that she tried so hard to suppress they were bound to take over her eventually. nia is more than a bubbly born sexy yesterday sweet girl and i'm delighted to see that being acknowledged

so, yeah. the ladies' chapter. loved it

Honestly I’ve been really disappointed with the Li’s reaction to Mc’s disappearance, but I think they’re all caught up on the fact that they moved on while Mc was asleep (except Imtura and Tyril tbh I don’t think he moved on from it either) I think we should torture them with more angst tbh.

Here’s an idea: (apologies if anyone has already come up with this I just haven’t seen it if you have)

1. Mc being asleep the whole time.

- It would be angstier if they slowly started to imply that Mc wasn’t actually asleep the whole time, that she has a lot of trauma from what went on in Valax’ lab but has blocked it out. It would be cool if we get a scene where she unlocks those memories of what happened in that lab and everyone is just HORRIFIED.

2. Mc blowing up (I have seen people want Mc to blow up on them about her being drugged and not knowing what could’ve happened to her. Let’s take it a little further.)

-I think there should be a scene where the group or a chosen LI sees us seeking a lot of comfort in someone like Aerin or even someone else in the story. And this stems a fight where Mc reveals that she’s tired of them minimizing her trauma and only feels comfort from someone else. This can also lead to a bigger fight between them where Mc brings up that some of them (I’m looking at you Nia) have said that they’re not sure if they’re happy about having her back.

This one is not fully fleshed out or whatever but please feel free to add on to it, I’ll be adding more stuff as I think of it

Coming Home to Imtura

I think I saw where someone wanted to see a reunion fic with mc x Imtura, not sure if this was what you were wanting but this is my version of chapter 2 of Blades of Light and Shadow 2.

Pairing: Imtura x f!mc

Your pacing the length of the docks were sure to be aggravating Kade and Nia at this point but you couldn't stand still. It had only been a few days since you came stumbling through the portal, barely escaping death from the claws of the power mad Ash princess. What was days in the Shadow realm to you was an entire year in the Light realm. A year for your brother, for your friends, for Imtura. By the Light, you couldn't even imagine what it was like for Imtura, if roles had been reversed...you shudder at the thought.

Nia had sent a message to Imtura by dove as soon as you fell back into the palace's throne room, alerting the orc to abandon whatever clues or leads the gang could find about traveling between the Light and the Shadow realm and to make haste to Portnassus as soon as possible. And now here you were, waiting on the docks, just minutes from possibly seeing The Wraith approaching.

Doubts began to cross your mind. What if everything changed for Imtura? A year apart could have made her feelings fade away for you. What if looking at you was like looking at a stranger? You almost didn't recognize Nia when you were reunited with her. Nia's hair and clothing style changed but it was the new self confidence that she now held herself with that made you realize the woman you met back in Riverbend a long time ago was completely transformed anew. What had a year done to Imtura?

"Sister, look." Kade's strong and steady voice soothed you just as much as his hand on your shoulder did. You looked at where he was pointing and your heart lurched in your chest at the sight of Imtura's colors flying proudly atop the masts of her ship. The ship was approaching rapidly and you knew the orc that had captured your heart was on it.

You struggle to keep yourself from just hurling yourself into the sea to swim towards The Wraith, to make the reunion happen faster but it seems even Imtura was just as impatient, because not even before her crew could drop anchor and bring up the sails, she was swinging down onto the dock, boots slamming into the groaning wood while her hard eyes swept across all the occupants on the dock until her gold eyes met yours.

Her intense gaze that could sear through you immediately softened as she laid eyes upon you. Her jaw dropped in disbelief as she mouthed your name. Your knees buckled but Kade gently pushes you towards the orc and suddenly you're running towards her, as if Princess Valax was hot on your heels.

"Imtura!" You cry out.

"MC!!" Imtura roared and thundered towards you. As soon as she was able to get her hands on you, you were immediately swept up and lifted entirely off the ground in her embrace. You sobbed as she brought you back down and grasped the sides of your head and hungrily slammed your lips together. It was messy, it was rough, her tusks scrapped you, but it was perfect and everything you needed.

You trembled as she finally reluctantly pulled back to look into your eyes. A smile crept across Imtura's face like the rising of the morning sun and as you stood there in her arms, her forehead pressed against yours, the fear you had been feeling since you were kidnapped fell away. You knew the upcoming battle was far from over, you still had to find Mal and Tyril and discuss the looming threat of the Ash Empire. Princess Valax was not the type to quit at just one loss but right now...right here...none of that mattered. Because the woman you love, was holding you like you would break at any moment and looking at you as if she'd sail the entire ocean and fight the Dreadlord again for you. This moment in time belonged to you and Imtura.

Apologies to anyone who actually knows ship terminology and if I made any mistakes. I'm sorry but I didn't want to do any research lol.

Chapter 2

-(Reader)-

After Iruma came back from the Chair Demon's office, he explained to us that the ritual will only last a year and Kalego-sensei was sent home early due to shock. I felt bad for Sensei though, I hope he's doing alright. While walking with Asmodues & Iruma to get our textbook, Asmodeus got so overly dramatic over a couple of students getting in 'Iruma-samas way" he summons his familiar to scare them away. Iruma told him that he didn't had to do that. Literally, Asmodeus is acting like Iruma's personal servant now or something. 

We managed to make it to the room where our textbooks are, but instead a green haired demon girl rolled out of the room and knocked the stacked of boxes down. The green haired demon girl went up to Iruma and started to introduce herself. 

"I'm Clara! And my right foot is Connor, and my left foot is Murf! My familiar is Falfal! See, I was trying to grab some teaching aids, but I got too excited and crashed! Hey, have some candy!" She hands Iruma some candy as she just said. 

"You see, I came to get my textbooks! But, I got carried away and crashed into it! Don't you want to crash into stuff when it's piled up like that?! You do, don't you! I'll do it again, so watch me, watch me~!" She continues excitedly as she walks over to the pile of boxes and stacks them up while singing.

"Valax Clara, she's quite known for being a weirdo." Asmodeus whispers to us. "She destroys stuff and is rather troublesome, so everyone tend to stay away from her."

"Troublesome..."

"Well, just because she's troublesome doesn't mean it hurts to be near her." I commented. One of the staff took notice that we were here so he said,"Iruma-kun! (Reader)-san and Asmodeus-kun, right?"

"Iruma, (Reader), and Asmodeus!" Clara said. "I'll leave the rest to you!" The staff said as he causes the four of us to levitate and get tied up right before being send off.

Once we were outside, we manged to untie ourselves. Clara started to play on the until she said,"Iruma-chi! (Reader)-chan! Azz-Azz, what do you wanna play?"

"Iruma-chi?!"

"(Reader)-chan?"

"Azz-Azz?"

"I have loads." She says. A lot of equipment just appeared out of no where. Asmodeus suggested that we run for it, but I for one didn't want to. In the end, we played house and some other games with Clara for two hours straight. We were already tired as it is, but personally it was pretty fun.

 "No energy~?" Clara said to Iruma. She double tapped one of her pockets and a bottle of juice. Clara hands it to Iruma right before she double taps her other pocket once more to reveal some snacks coming out too.

Clara explains how this is her family's ability. She basically can make anything appear from her pockets. A group of guys called Clara over for some snacks which she happily did so. Clara explained that she always does this if those who she gives gifts to can play with her.  One time, the same guys asked her for some Popsicle's in return to play hide and seek. 

They told her to count fifty thousand and it took her the whole day to finish and such. I gave a concerned look. I was gonna respond back with the truth, instead she responded,"But, you guys are the first ones to properly play with me like this! That's why...." Clara twiddles her fingers. "Erm....Can I play with you again?"

"Yeah!" Iruma & I responded in unison. 

"Let's not, Iruma-sama...." Asmodeus suggested. "Don't ruined this moment Asmodeus-kun!" I muttered.

The next day, we played with Clara the whole. I guess she isn't a trouble maker as Asmodeus said. She's more like a chaotic child who want's someone to play with. While walking around the halls, I overheard those same guys from yesterday talking bad about Clara. As well as saying Iruma, Asmodeus, and I are still hanging out with an idiotic girl like her. That's where I draw damn line. "Hey!" 

They turned to me. One of them asked with disgust,"What you want?" "What I want is for you to leave Clara alone and to stop using her for your own selfish needs!"

They all laugh at my response. This wasn't gonna end well.

-Third person-

Clara managed to get back at the guys who would always use her. Just as the guys left, (Reader), while being a tad bruised up, saw them pass by running. She saw was just occured and smiled. "Now that's what I call pay back." (Reader) walked over to Iruma & Clara and took notice of her bruises. (Reader) explained to them that she confronted them for being mean to Clara and ended up getting into a fight. Later on, Asmodeus returns back from where he was filled with smudges on his uniform and hair.

"As ordered, I've returned after having everyone who had picked on Valac and the guys who hurt Armendaz-san promise that they 'won't mess with her again.'" He responds.

"T-thank you, Azz-kun! Erm... You went to have a talk with them, right."Iruma said. "I think Asmodeus did more than just "talking" to those demons." You muttered. "Yes! Amicably!"

By the end of the day, we continue to play with Clara and we all had fun. Although, my right arm still hurts pretty badly. I'm gonna have to put some bandages on it and make sure no one else see's it.

I met up with Asmodeus and Clara to walk with Iruma to school since apparently we're doing this now. While waiting, Iruma walks out and we all greeted him. "Iruma-chi, morning!"

"-Iruma-sama, good morning."

"Morning Iru-kun!"

"You're so full in the morning..." Iruma said.

We all walked to the school instead of flying today. It feels pretty good for a change. We went over to the lunch area that day to eat something. Once I got my food I saw that Iruma's table was filled with food and in a instant he finished almost everything. He had such a big appetite he even tired the chef out after ordering more food. That's when we saw Clara getting trouble at the lunch areas stall. Turns out that she's already been banned due to her ability which is considered stealing.

The rest of the students started a ruckus after witnesses what going on until some said,"Silence!"

I recognize that voice anywhere. "Good grief, even though this is my first day of work after a long rest. Which idiot is causing an uproar in the middle of the day-" With one glimpse at Iruma, Kalego-sensei stood their quiet and stepped away from him. "Are you feeling better?" Iruma asked. 

"You're the only one I don't want worrying about me!" Sensei snapped. "So is that a yes or no Sensei? Because I was also worried about you too." I said. He looked at me before looking back at Iruma. I guess I'll take as a maybe. "Listen Iruma, I won't fall so low as to become your familiar. Don't get conceited thinking that you got me on a leash!"

"I-I'll keep it in mind."

He does make a fair point though. "Rather, what are you guys fussing about?" He gives one look at Clara and realized our group increased. Clara instantly jumped onto Kalego-Sensei and started to introduce herself while explaining what happen. "Uh Clara-chan I think it's best to give Kalego-sensei some personal space." I suggested. 

Just as I pulled her away from Sensei, she squirmed a bit and her hand made contact where my arm was bruised. I let out a small flinch which Sensei took notice, but quickly brushed it off. When Kalego-sensei was about to leave, Clara pulled away from me and stopped him. "Is it true that Eggie sensei is Iruma-chi's familiar?"

She persistently continue to ask Sensei to show her. "Iruma-chi, get that seal for me!" Clara tells Iruma. She told him to put the seal on his hand and clap his hands. "Iruma I don't think that's such a good-" It was already too late. Iruma clapped his hands and Sensei turned into his familiar form. "-Idea..." I face palmed.  Things went from bad to worse. The store clerk got so made about not paying the seal we ran off leaving Kalego-sensei. 

I'm gonna have to apologize to him the next time I see him. Catching our breath outside, we all began to talk about how much fun we had with Iruma. 

"T-the three of you, are my...fr-"He stood there quiet for a second. "F-friends, right?!" He spoke. Asmodeus, Clara, and I looked at Iruma with confusion. "Um, Iruma-sama, what is this 'friends' you speak of...?" Asmodeus asks.

"Is it suppose to be some kind of insult or something?" I add in. Iruma explains that friends are important people who play and eat together with you. I found that pretty fascinating actually. I guess we are his "friends" as he says we are.

There are so many Blades moments I desperately want expanded upon! (Or: potential fanfics I don't see myself writing)

Moments that we never actually got to see (I am very nosy, I want to see):

Imtura going off about MC being dead and cursing out the group. How exactly did it go down? Why/How was Imtura especially "cruel" (her word) to Nia?

Nia apologizing to Tyril for the whole 'everything you thought you knew about magic was a lie, idiot' moment. Let's get over our religious trauma together!

Loola and Threep telling the party they're having babies. Everyone will be so excited! Let us have nice things!

And there are still so many character things I have questions about!

The Ash Empire was actively hunting Aerin, hoping to kill him. So... now that we're all in the same friend group, does Valax realize who he is? Does she care?? Do they bond over their unloving parents and the isolation of being a prince/princess?

While we're on the subject, give me actual apologies from Aerin and Valax. I don't remember MC ever getting one from either person!

Aerin, please confirm if you did or didn't know that Kade was being tortured in the Shadow Court's dungeon. If he knew Kade was there, did Aerin know Kade was MC's brother? Because that would really recontextualize his reassurances in the Deadwood. If Aerin didn't know, does he still feel bad about it? (He should!)

I want Nia, Aerin, and Elder Radimir to sit down and compare notes about corruption, then give MC (and by extension, me) a 3 hour powerpoint lecture about it.

I want to see Mal and Wren getting into that moment when they had an unspoken understanding not to tell MC about him going to the garden every day. Was Mal sneaking in? Was part of him hoping he'd get caught?

Did the common people have any affection for Baldur? Because, to me, this does not seem like the kind of behavior most people appreciate.

And who in the world is next in line to rule Morella? That seems important.
