Hi lovelies!
Did I ever share with you that I love weddings and runway and TV?
Well, I do! (see what I did there? lol)
Sometimes opportunities come back and Mission Catwalk 2023 spun the block for me. It is a Jamaican-created television show for Caribbean and Caribbean diaspora designers to compete against each other for several weeks to see who will rule the catwalk (Caribbean reality TV series aimed at discovering & developing talented fashion designers). The beloved show was off-air for four years and came back with finesse and flair. This year’s top prizes included an opportunity to showcase a full collection at Paris Fashion Week, a place to study garment construction and apparel design at the University of Technology, cash prizes, photoshoots, interviews, media spreads and more.
I had the chance to be chosen as an original model when the show first aired, but due to a conflict in my schedule, I wasn’t able to appear until the finale. Boy, what a day that was. The show must go on and it did. The winner Aaron from Trinidad was announced with his ‘Sweet, Sweet Darling’ collection and Peabo from Barbados was second with his eco-friendly, hand painting beautifully constructed ‘Ethereal Reverie’ collection.
My designer, Monique Morgan Allen of Simply Majestic Designs was chosen as a wild card two weeks before the live recorded finale. Talk about pressure! She pulled through for Jamaica and was placed third overall. As a mom, wife and business owner that’s a big deal! The inspiration behind her Majestic Grandeur collection was for a Parisian bride who needed outfits for several engagement festivities leading up to her island wedding in beautiful Jamaica. Monique created pants suits, dresses, evening gowns and a wedding dress that would do well for an engagement photoshoot. The colour palette included white, blue-green, creams and black, with mainly solids and a palm print. Her fabrics of choice were silk and cotton- perfect for the tropical climate here. Simply Majestic Designs is known for creative wedding and evening gowns, so her draping skills are a beauty to behold in person. Most of the silhouettes on the runway were flattering to the body and comfortable. As a fiance and soon-to-be bride, the client would definitely want to show off her figure in a classy and fun way. When in Paris wear the stripes, when in Jamaica wear the flowy outfits and chic palm prints (emphasis on chic).
As you take in the details of Monique’s pieces, listen to her song of choice Fall by Olakira. Ugh! When I heard the rhythm and flow, I felt sexy, beautiful and ready for my own wedding party lol. It’s so perfect.
Look 2 is a simple yet chic white A-line halter shirt dress with pockets. Photo by Tiffany Lue Yen
Looks 1-3 included three white pieces. First, was an off-the-shoulder bodycon dress with layers that looked like flower petals, second was a sleeveless, A-line halter shirt dress with pockets (my fave from this set), third look was a figure-hugging pant set with a removable cardigan.
3-piece pants set with satin halter crop top, cotton high-waisted pants and long puffy sleeved cotton cardigan with a back cut-out detail for Look 4. Photo by Tiffany Lue Yen
Looks 4-6 brought the prints! A 3-piece pant set (my fave from this set), maxi dress and a maxi skirt with crop top. To me these are brunch friendly options for our Parisian bride-to-be. She can mix these sets with other pieces for resortwear and casual wear options too.
Look 7 is a blue-green satin dress with flattering cut-out details and shoulder train. Photo by Tiffany Lue Yen
Looks 7-9 Sexy satin evening gowns anyone? Blue-green cut-out dress with one-shoulder train (my fave from this set), white halter gown and a one-shoulder black satin mermaid silhouette dress with a bow detail in the back.
As a stylist and fashion enthusiast, I would love to see her completed collection with all twelve looks. Until then, enjoy the nine looks displayed at the finale in photos here and watch all of Season 7 on 1spotmedia.com.
