How often had he heard this tale?, How many desperate monsters had come clawing at his doors for any hope of justice, Of finding their loved ones when all other options had failed, Of finding those who’d ran off to forge a new life, Cheated spouses wanting retribution, Hits out on criminals (Other criminals a tiny voice in his head reminded him-) and of course people simply seeking justice for the dead, That was the hard part with monsters, Their dust scattered in the slightest wind and though there’d certainly been killers out there who collected their victim’s remains, There was rarely anything left behind besides personal belongings if those weren’t taken by various passerby’s on the street.

The skeletons singular eye light had been scanning over the case files the elemental, Grillby as he’d known him had brought with him while he talked, Rambling on while he blazed through cigarette’s with a nervous anxiety that was only understandable in this situation, They were putting the pressure on thick. Trying to make him crack, To admit to a crime he may or may not have committed, But he had reason to believe he was innocent. Few guilty party ever made it to his office.

besides...he had something most people didn’t, That gave him a success rate others didn’t have, He could read people’s LV. Dig through their sins like an open book so even as he’d read those papers, He’d been reading grillby to while he spoke, Few emotions rang out more clearly then sadness, Guilt that blazed hotter then his flames.

“I believe ya.”

They were the first words out of his mouth besides his initial greeting when the elemental had arrived, An umbrella being the only thing that had protected him from getting drenched, yet he’d came anyway. He imagined as much for a moment of peace from being stalked by cops as anything else. To hide in the quiet peace of his quaint little office in the darkest crevice of Ebott city.

“You haven’t been in the city long have you? Max five years if i’m to take a guess, First mistake was goin’ to the cops expectin’ them to help ya, The motto might be to protect and serve. But what that doesn’ tell ya is Humans first, Monsters second, Oh sure they’ll try and solve the crime. Specially with a whole family of elementals clawin’ at their asses, unfortunately their version of solvin’ it is sentencing somebody, they dun’ gotta be right, after all. Who’s gonna ask when it’s over and done with? Nobody and you sit right in the middle of all this like a wallet dropped on a busy city street.”

Send “📂“ for a random Headcannon I have @spookyscientistskeleton - 📂 for NootNoot, Sans, and Private Eye Sans

The corruption despite lacking much of the same mentality as a regular creature, Feels what it can only compare to as intense amounts of guilt for what it did to Nightmare, It rescued him when he needed it most as a hurting child who’d felt so much grief and despair at his young age that it made even the corruption wither under it’s intensity. But it’s situating of night’s body also broke it, Far to weak to handle the intensity of it’s magic at even it’s weakest, It has gotten him chased away by the multiverse itself as a monster and admittedly. The corruption responded in kind, It’s charge is far older now but it often still wonders if it could not have done something different. If it had tried harder that just maybe, It could have truly changed his fate for the better.

In his alternative post-game verse, When the determination awakens in sans and effectively revives him, He is re-classed as a boss monster just like his brother because of the sheer amount of magical energy he gives off. The best example would be much like what happens with Undyne in the genocide route except in a much smaller body and a humans determination, Fixing his body, physically altering his clothes (the fluff of his hoodie gets all wispy like fire-). He’s considered the official leader of the skeleton clan from then on.

As an extra side headcannon that though while he does go on to become a doctor, He also takes on the side task of species revival, Bringing back old clans like skeletons, elementals, kelouls (Vita’s species!), He knows it’s a big project. But if any of the three prove to be successful, he intends to move further onto 100% extinct species with no living descendants through whatever means necessary.

He’s a LOT less lazy, In his private eye verse though he does spend many hours doing paperwork and research for his cases, He spends just as much time out on the streets. Tracking down leads, Occasionally settling smaller crimes and some scores for his affiliations, He goes to fancy grand parties hosted by the city elites, It’d be rude to deny an invitation after all. He’s charming, He talks up some of the best and worst people, Whether it’s sharing a cigar with dream or bantering with Nightmare. There’s little he inevitably doesn’t do, Even if he comes off lazy on the surface and he wants it that way, Better off most people don’t know what he does to solve their cases. There’s a reason he has the success rate he does.

'they are walking shadows, live without living, wrapped in darkness like me. Is it wrong to free them, they do not stop fighting, i will bear it for them, all of their pain, all of their doubt, i can hold it. keep it. remember it even should they forget.'

the shadow has not moved from their place, rooted in place by the whispers over their shoulder, they do not turn around. they never do, it chatters to them, whispering of others sins, their stories, their pain. they are heavy with everyone elses despair.

He’s found himself on a couch, he doesn’t know when he got there, but all he can imagine is it was the home of the skeleton who’d taken to personally manhandling him (Another him except for a few jarring differences-). He blinks his tired eye sockets wearily, He can hear someone nearby and the rattle of a dish, was someone cooking something?, Every bit of his bones ached with a deep exhaustion. An exhaustion that made it hard to gather the will to sit up from where he’d been laying.

But with a few minutes and a huff of exertion, he managed it, sitting up and taking a peek around the house..? apartment? he couldn’t tell from where he was. He’d admit, the thought of food made his non-existent stomach grumble loudly, when was the last time he’d eaten? days, it had to be days, that was probably one of the reasons his magic hadn’t resurfaced except for that brief flash when he’d been panicked.

Speaking of panicking, The same skeleton from before had re-appeared and he was this close to shying away, At least until he set a frankly if you asked masterfully done hot dog on the coffee table in front of the couch. Eye light flicking between the meal and the other skeleton before finally finding his voice.

it looks itself over and for a moment it seems confused by the question, it is broken, anyone who sees it knows it to be true, it should not be able to see but it does, it should not be able to stand but it does, it should not be able to speak but it does. it's branch laden skull tilts to one side and it asks in return, a echo of an echo hides behind it's voices.

what was he? he'd been many things yet were they just parts of him or were they how he hid his truth. the shadow is divided, each facet shows something different, There is a child shadow that flees from all it's fear, there's a shadow that screams endlessly at the knowledge it's obtained, there is a shadow that dusts another shadow. All lined up and waiting, there is a shadow hooked up to so many machines and wires that you can barely tell it's a skeleton, there is a shadow that holds a smaller shadow in it's grasp, both of them are crying but only the larger one notices. There is a shadow that melts into itself before reforming, All the shadows at once turn to stare in unison.

The shadow ducks and weaves, following an invisible path way he only seems to know, it's broken body seems neither complete nor' in disrepair. Some pieces get left behind in it's wake yet it moves fluidly despite the damage it brings to itself, Shadow blasters with hollow sockets and crumbling jaws cough up dust before disappearing, It's a familiar dance, Stick to the pattern and wish for another day.

'yes and no, death is an old friend, it asks for me. embraces me like a old lover, it's hands are gentle, no colder then mine, it asks when it'll be the last time. i do not have an answer, it understands, i am pulled from it's grasp once more. to dance once more for my life, each step, each move is practiced. i do not deviate. death is oblivious peace, i do not hear, i do not see, i do not speak. death knows my name, it knows my body, it knows my voice, i fear the final end, when will death keep me. when will it hold me evermore, when the dance of determination meets it's end.'

Note

deceptively gentle hands hold the poor little shadow's tattered cheekbones, "see you (dusted) soon!" - with LOVE, a human.

the shadow does not flinch as hands hold it's cheekbones ever so gentle, as if it should shatter any moment, tears drip over those hands and though the words should hurt, it instead leans into the touch, reflexively craving the touch. Eager to obey. To follow the lead, the shadow has no desire to flee, It just wants LOVE. the love did not have to be good. it was comfortable and familiar. There was the softest nod, it understood, it would wait in it's place.
