Why I believe Zevlor should become a companion in act 2 instead of Halsin:
1. Halsin is a druid and in act 3 we get Jaheira - that way in a good playthrough we get two druids which is kinda pointless in my opinion from the mechanical standpoint
2. Minthara is supposed to be an evil-playthrough companion and Halsin a good-playthrough one (I know that now you can have them both, but that was the original idea) - it would make sense to have a good version paladin and a bad version paladin
3. It would be especially interesting considering Zevlor is an oathbreaker and Minthara is not - I like the twist of the "good" option being the oathbreaker
4. Halsin's story ends in act 2. When you defeat the shadow-curse his arch is over, there isn't much more to him (he just has some thoughts about how the city is not balanced). There isn't much there to explore after he fixed his "mistakes from the past". He's just there and after some time of not much conversation he's just "yeah, you wanna smash?"
5. Zevlor still has a lot to work through after his people got captured and killed and he didn't do anything - there's A LOT of material for development
6. (very subjective) Zevlor's story is much more interesting. Halsin is exactly who he seems to be. Obsessed with nature and balance, the most stereotypical druid you could imagine. You know, the whole "just as nature intended" thing. Zevlor is an idealist who fought for people of Elturel only to be betrayed by them when they won - casting him and other tieflings out. THAT was when he broke his oath, when they were cast out. How exactly? We don't know. It is said that it wasn't even the oath that was broken but his faith itself - there is so much to explore there! But all we get is a short conversation telling him he cannot give up and he's like oh shit, you're right and then he appears for the final battle
7. I think him and Jaheira would really vibe together. The mom and dad of the group - the cynical Harper who has a complicated relationship with that institution and an idealistic oathbreaker paladin who just wanted to protect his people but failed
8. LARIAN PLEASE LET ME FUCK THAT SWEET OLD MAN

Additional brain rot about Ascended!Astarion and a oath of vengeance paladin Tav:
If, by some miracle, Tav regains their senses faster after Astarion ascends, and refuses to become his spawn, I think it’s also sad to consider that the divine powers they once had to protect themselves (and others) against the greater evils and undead in the world is gone. And I also think Astarion would absolutely capitalize off that.
To think the once mighty paladin was reduced to such darker powers after they break their oath (and MUCH less effective against vampires, mind you.) would absolutely stir something egotistical in him. He of course snaps at Tav for not wanting to become his spawn, telling them he can force them to, if he wanted (he does adore them terribly). And then the daunting realization sets in for Tav that, unlike prior, they really don’t have that much protection from their (ex) lover. The divine powers that helped smite Cazador were effectively nullified, and they really couldn’t do it a second time with an even more powerful vampire.
Astarion would take them, of course. They never had a choice in the first place, but it’s so much more sweet when he considers how much he specifically made them fall from grace.
If the paladin didn’t want him, he would pull them down into the darkness with him, extinguishing that flame in their (for now) beating heart. After all, no one saved him from Cazador, what gives them the right to be so pure in a world so evil? He needs to save them from that self righteous attitude, it’s bound to get them killed.
“An Oathbreaker is a paladin who breaks his or her sacred oaths to pursue some dark ambition or serve an evil power. Whatever light burned in the paladin's heart has been extinguished. Only darkness remains.” - DnD 5e

The hardest part about playing a Paladin is that there isn’t some authority to argue with every time you break your oath. Like:
“Your Honor, one of the tenets of my Oath is literally ‘kindle the light.’ I maintain that those buildings were the perfect kindling and fire is an excellent source of light.”
But no. There’s no one to argue with.
Imagine a Paladin subclass where there’s some authority figure to which you can argue about the terms of your Paladin contract and trick them with wordplay to win your case. Maybe you can negotiate for more powers and shit.
That would be a great class. I would play the hell out of that class.

One way BG3 keeps me in a chokehold? The effects of lighting on armor. What the heck, they make armor look so good under various lighting?!?!?! Was taking screenshots for references.

Bg3 Dark urge class recommendation!
I did a durge playthrough as a monk first and now as a durge oath breaker paladin and I really really recommend it. Durge paladin gets more lines specific to a dark urge backstory and a paladin specific character to deliver them.
10/10 recommend

OC Profile - Idril/Morwen
OC Tav of my longfic Oathbreaker
Thanks for the tag @vatyrie-avaris ! I love these things 😁
BASICS
Full Name: Idril Elhana (aka Morwen Elhana) Nickname: Idi (only amme calls her that), Wen (only Astarion calls her that.)
Gender: female
Sexuality: pansexual
Pronouns: she/her
OTHER
Family:
Father: Sarric Yeskian
Mother: Darfiel Elhana
Birthplace: Baldur's Gate
Job: previously a Paladin of the Order of the Five Stars, but now an oathbreaker working as an independent contractor (sellsword and bounty hunter)
Phobias: basophobia (fear of falling)
Guilty Pleasures: alcohol. She's an emotional drinker, though she doesn't feel guilty about it. She also loves sex, specifically when it's a little rough, and pretty shameless about it (except if her father is in the room. Him calling out her promiscuity is a trigger.)
Alignment: it's complicated. Idril would have said she was lawful good, though didn't know at first that she was being led by a lawful evil cult leader. Morwen is pretty neutral good, though a bit chaotic at times.
Sins: if we're going by the seven, I'd say lust would be one, she has a weakness for a pretty face and flattering words. Of all her sins it's the one she finds hard to control herself with (as soon as there's consent of course). Also wrath, but that's sort of part of the job tbh.
Virtues: as a paladin she was taught to embody the virtues of her Order: Justice, Strength, Faith, Duty, Honour.  But now she would revise that to Justice, Honour, Compassion, Mercy, Wisdom, and Acumen. She now highly values critical thinking.
THIS OR THAT
Idril / Morwen
Introvert / Extrovert
Organised / Disorganised
Close-minded / Open-minded
Calm / Anxious / Restless
Disagreeable / Agreeable / In between
Cautious / Reckless / In between
Patient / Impatient / In between
Outspoken / Reserved / In between
Leader / Follower / Flexible
Empathetic / Unempathetic / In Between
Optimist / Pessimist / Realist
Traditional / Modern / In between
Hard-working / Lazy
RELATIONSHIPS
OTP : Idril/Morwen is polyamorous, always has been, so an OTP is the antithesis of her relationship style. She has had many loves in her life and will have many more in the future, and they are each just as important to her as the other. She can't pick a favourite, it's impossible.
Acceptable Ships: that's classified Act 3 stuff, sorry 😏 buuuuuut she is pretty open and easygoing as long as her current partners are consenting.
BroTP: I can't fully answer this either, but she did bond with Shadowheart in a sister-like relationship, and she has a lot of love in her for those close to her. She grows close to anyone she works with long-term and gets along well with. Like her romantic relationships, there is no single answer here.
NoTP: oof, there's a few. Raphael is the top of the list. Anyone she's been adversaries with. And *cough* past failed relationships.
I'm gonna tag @bhaalbabebardlock, @amischiefofmice, and @grovyrosegirl. I'm also going to do this again for Laileth 😁

Pandjed Kepeshmolik, copper dragonborn oathbreaker paladin, servant of Eknoron the iron dragonborn shadow dragon (!). He uses the heart of a dead chaos sorcerer to empower his dark spells.
Two of the current party members' former bodies are under his command as undead. They left the corpses behind in the icy mountains after they got reincarnated, and now this guy's got 'em.

I think Baldur’s Gate 3 might have given me unrealistic expectations about paladin oathbreaking. The Dungeon Master’s Guide makes it seem like a big deal and you have to be actually evil to become an Oathbreaker.
BG3 makes it feel like the paladins equivalent of getting a parking ticket.
Like I think it’s supposed to be such a big deal but they make it *so hard* to go fifteen minutes without breaking your oath.
