Fred McDowell: The farmer who emerged from the woods and made a masterpiece

I thought it might be good for newbies to Mississippi Fred McDowell –like I was when I recorded “Live in New York”– to find out about where Fred came from, recording wise. This article in the UK webzine, Far Out, lays it out pretty well. You might want to dig deeper into folklorist Alan Lomax, but more importantly, you'll get a glimpse of the ambition that drove Fred from a Mississippi farm to his well deserved worldwide acclaim. -Fred Seibert.

Some blues players can get their guitars to tell a story; Fred McDowell could get his to sing an opera akin to a southern Les Mis. “With Fred McDowell, I just love the way he articulates the notes,” fellow blues guitarist Bill Orcutt explains. “I’m hardly unique in that, but there’s just something about that that I love.” He’s not alone in that love either; everyone from Keith Richards to Bonnie Raitt have cited him as a star that they have attempted to emulate.

However, the one element nobody could ever copy was the humble backstory that brought him to the world. Long before he earned the prefix of Mississippi and became a big attraction at juke joints, got swamped backstage at folk festivals, or had his track covered by The Rolling Stones, he was just strumming away to an audience of nearby wildlife on his porch after a long day at work. Occasionally, he’d find himself in a situation where someone might toss him some loose change, but any notion of fame seemed unfamiliar.

But his skills were profound all the same, and fate would drag him towards another American numen on his travels. Alan Lomax was a roving ethnomusicologist, which is a big word for a curious fellow with a portable recording device that could capture the nation’s true folk on the move. One day, during Lomax and Shirley Collins’ great Southern Journey expedition, they rocked up in Como, Mississippi. They were intent on capturing the music at a local dance and the Young brothers’ fife and drum ensemble.

It was 1959, and McDowell was a 54-year-old wondering what his legacy would be beyond the farm he kept. So, without much fanfare and no warning, he decided to pick up his guitar, weave his way through the local woods, and rock up at Lonnie Young’s porch, where the recording was said to be taking place. Lomax and Collins lent him their ears, hit record, and old McDowell began to play.

Half a century later, if you close your eyes while listening to the masterpiece now known as The Alan Lomax Recordings, you can almost see the overalled maestro on the creaking porch ahead of you, hear the rustle of the southern breeze through the lowering tupelo trees, and smell the dancehalls buffer in the air. Of course, some of that is due to the suggestion of the cover art on the Mississippi Records pressing, but what I’m trying to convey is the dogeared sincerity that renders this authentic tape so beguiling.

Even at the time, Lomax and Collins were so flummoxed by the humility and skill of this unknown farmer that they quickly whisked their tapes off to a blues label, and in his autumn years, McDowell became an internationally renowned star, typifying what was best about the blues when the revival movement had somewhat muddied the waters — he was the new (old) find that the kids were craving.

He would soon rub shoulders with the next generation, teaching Raitt how to play slide guitar, touring with the likes of Big Mama Thornton and John Lee Hooker, and embracing the flattery of being covered by rockers despite declaring himself that he did not play rock ‘n’ roll. He left the farm behind and enjoyed a good 13 years of fame until his death in 1972, aged 68, but his old porch was never truly that far from his artistic thoughts, so even beyond the masterful Lomax Recordings, he’s the bluesman who can capture the earthiness of the South with more verity than anyone.

hey, i was wondering if you had any advice about tube screamers. I know jonny has used them in the past, but I was wondering if they'd do a good job at getting a sound close to his Shredmaster Marshall tone. From what I've seen/heard, they sound pretty similar wouldn't you say? would it also work to help get some of the smile distortion tones (think heavy thin thing chorus riff tone?)

A Tubescreamer is probably the last dirt pedal I’d pick for Shredmaster tones. For one, the Tubescreamer uses symmetrical soft clipping, with a gentle onset and a very smooth sound. The Shredmaster uses hard clipping, which gives a much sharper sound. Turn up the gain and they may start to sound similar, but they feel very different to play. As for frequency response, the Tubescreamer has a distinctive “nose”, with cut lows, focused mids, and sharply cut highs. The Shredmaster also has sharply cut highs, but it has way more low frequencies (unless the bass knob is near zero). And the Shredmaster is also capable of some heavily scooped sounds thanks to the dramatic contour knob.

Jonny's second pedalboard in 2006. The BOSS LS2 selects between two outputs. The first output feeds the Boss SD1 -> Boss RV3 -> Akai Headrush -> Vox AC30. The second output feeds the Marshall Shredmaster -> Boss FV300 -> Fender EightyFive. Jonny set the gain on his AC30 amplifier to be fairly clean, then used the volume boost from his SD1 to push the tube amp into overdrive. In contrast, the solid-state Fender Eighty-Five amplifier is totally clean, which is the reason the Shredmaster sounds so punchy with it.

While Jonny has never used a Proco Rat, there’s a good reason that so many people think he did: on certain settings, it does sound similar to Jonny’s Shredmaster settings. It definitely lacks the bass of Jonny’s Shredmaster setting, but it’s still a lot closer than a Tubescreamer. That’s because the Rat also uses hard clipping, giving a more aggressive “distortion” sound in contrast to the softer “overdrive” of the Tubescreamer. You could easily mod a Rat to cut less bass pre-clipping, but it would result in a bloated sound. Boosting the bass post-clipping would sound better, but unfortunately it’s a lot more complicated.

For recent The Smile shows, Jonny has used his old Boss SD1 overdrive pedal for all his distorted guitar sounds (so just on Thin Thing and The Opposite). The SD1 is nearly identical to a Tubescreamer, as both are slight variations on the older Boss OD1 circuit, adding a tone control. But the SD1 has asymmetrical soft clipping, in contrast to the Tubescreamer’s symmetrical soft clipping. The difference is noticeable with a clean amp, but with a distorted amp they sound extremely similar. Luckily, there are plenty of Tubescreamer clones available with multiple clipping options (like the EQD Plumes), so you can get the best of both worlds. And if you want to try your hand at mods, it’s easily to buy a cheap used SD1 and add a switch for multiple clipping options.

If you want something that falls between Shredmaster and Tubescreamer, the best option would probably be a Boss OD3. Jonny has used that pedal consistently since 2006, and it’s perhaps best heard on the album version of Identikit. Jonny also used it for The Smile’s Glastonbury live stream. Like the Shredmaster, the OD3 cuts bass pre-clipping then adds it back post-clipping, so the pedal sounds full but not bloated (as would be the case with lots of bass pre-clipping). It also has more gain and a Marshally voicing, bringing even closer to a Shredmaster. However, the OD3 uses a fairly uncommon multi-stage discrete-opamp design, which gives it a very dynamic clipping response. It definitely feels more like an overdrive, or even an amp. It’s definitely more amp-like than the Shredmaster.

One day, I asked Tom Pomposello why the Living Blues magazine in its original 1970s era was designed so poorly.

I wasn’t being snobby, I think I was just used to the slicker graphics of the vinyl LPs of rock groups or jazz labels.

“Fred,” Tom said, “it’s the blues.”

Understood. But I was a suburban kid who was definitely not really the blues, so I redesigned Tom’s distinctly bluesy flyer for Fred McDowell’s Live in New York.

Is there a right or wrong way? I’m torn. You decide.
