Nosk Party Collab

✨ No disguises necessary! ✨

What is the Nosk Party? It's a collaborative project that anyone with a nosk OC or nosk design can join by drawing their nosk(s) and submitting via the form below before the end of June 2023. The final results are a couple group pictures of nosks hanging out in the same place and having a great time!

✨ Basic rules:

-Make a new drawing of your nosk(s) having fun -Drawing can be digital or traditional (see below for image requirements) -Can be bust, half-body, or full-body -Flat color or minor shading is ideal -Body horror is fine, but no NSFW, and keep gore mild so we don't have to add a content warning -No more than three nosks per person -While the rave theme is optional, it is encouraged :)

✨ Image requirements:

-Draw large! 1000x1000 pixels at a minimum -File size limit of 10 MB

Digital art: -Submit a PNG with transparent background -Do not add an extra border

Traditional art: -Take a clear scan/picture with no shadow over the character -Ideally take the picture during the day for natural light and truer color -Optional (but preferred): Edit out the paper background if you can, but we will do that if you cannot.

✨ Submission form will ask for the following things:

-Your tumblr username -Your nosk's name (or what it is based off, eg. Elderbug Nosk) -The image file of the artwork -Optional: group name if you are organizing an interaction with other artists but submitting separately -Optional: relative size of the nosk (based on the diagram in the form)

-Nosks based off in-game characters/creatures are absolutely allowed. They can just be a design you made rather than a full character, if that's what you'd like to submit. :) (However, drawing Ghost Nosk or Hornet (Winged) Nosk as they appear in the game will not be accepted) -Bust/half-body drawings will be grouped together on one canvas, while the full-body drawings will be on a separate one. -If you would like to plan character interactions with friends, you are welcome and encouraged to do so! Either submit the mini-collab as a single large image with everyone's characters included, or come up with a group name so we can identify you easily.

WELCOME TO MY PRESENTATION

Don't get me wrong I don't hate Nosk, they're one of my favorite characters in Hollow Knight and media in general. I absolutely adore the concept behind them and the SUSPENSE through those tunnels leading to the big reveal still remains one of my favorite scenes to come back to in HK. The design and concept behind them is very neat and the overall feeling of that first time you enter the arena and see that cutscene is just. Wonderful.

That said, my issues are all about the actual fight. Specifically the attacks.

Nosk has arguably one of the most interesting buildups to a fight in HK, and is in one of the most creepy areas of the game, considering the arena and atmosphere of the fight too, I was expecting this to be a hard boss. I was expecting really difficult and potentially creepy attacks. The OST is one of the most anxiety inducing tracks in the game. Yet the entire fight just amounts to them.. running around? Occasionally jumping onto the ceiling? It feels like a rip off.

Nosk literally only has three attacks and they're all easy to dodge/cheese, if they were just small parts of the fight, it'd be fine, but instead 50% of the fight is just Nosk running across the arena, which is easy to dodge with or without the use of hiding under the platform(still one of the funniest ways to cheese a fight honestly).

Nosk has a bunch of hanging CORPSES in their den, so I thought that maybe they'd have a close up attack where if you got too close it'd trigger them swiping close range, kind of like this:

The attack with screaming and the infection getting everywhere? NICE! Nosk on the ceiling shooting orange juice at you? GREAT! But the fact those are basically the only two good attacks in this fight with THREE really just. It weighs it down for me man.

By this point in the game(I mean I had to Google where Nosk was since I only saw art of them on my first playthrough since they're hidden), plenty of bosses had phases, too. I feel like the fight could've easily been more anxiety inducing if they had a few phases.

For example:

Phase one - same as current fight + close range attack

Phase two - running attack happens less, potential variations of other attacks, speed up things a bit

Phase three - more orange juice, maybe webs(since that's how the other creatures in the background appear to be captured), could potentially do some jumping version of the running attack(like jumping around the arena aggressively making them harder to do damage to without being hit)?

I'm obviously not a game designer, but I do like rambling about things and potential ideas that could happen to make things better.

The Nosk fight on its own isn't even terrible, it's just the fact that it doesn't live up to the buildup of the way to the fight and the cutscene in the beginning, let alone the absolute panic the OST makes me feel.

Oh and don't even get me STARTED on Winged Nosk. HOW DO YOU MAKE SOMETHING LESS TERRIFYING BY ADDING WINGS IM IN GENUINE SHOCK

I know I probably repeated myself a lot and this is very scattered, but I hope that you somehow enjoyed seeing me ramble aggressively about a fight in a silly bug game that I think has issues anyway.

In conclusion Nosk has an amazing concept, design, OST, atmosphere, and some alright attacks, but really could've benefitted from some more attacks/phases.

I wrote more about this fight than I did for my English essay on Thursday so I don't know what that says about me but do with that what you will

Well eating them without permission would just be rude, and would probably terrify them. But there are exceptions, notably when swallowing them will save them from mortal danger.

I was just looking at your drawing of nosk, and it got me curious. What is nosk in the au is nosk just an individual or a species? If it is a species, how is the species doing post infection, and would they stay in deepnest or escape into the wider hollownest territory theough one of the other exits? Also, how do you think nosk's shape shifting works considering it says in game to reach into your mind and use memories.

It's a species, yeah, the Nosk we see in the game is just one of them. I do imagine they're quite rare though, either because of the infection or because Hallownest isn't the only place you can find them. Deepnest is its ideal hunting ground, since it's dark, cramped and easy to get lost in, which makes tricking potential victims quite easy (seeing a familiar face makes it more likely for them to follow it into its den).

As to how the shape shifting works, I think it's more like how certain predatory animals mimic their prey. I imagine the nosk has incredibly very developed mandibles or other body parts that can move around to form different shapes. The actual disguise in my AU isn't as perfectly 1:1 as in the game, but in the dark environment it's enough to trick many creatures. Moreover, it can mimic certain sounds and behaviors to attract its prey. In some cases, it can pretend to be a different prey animal altogether in order to attract bigger creatures. It's a very specialized species, one perfectly adapted to hunt in Deepnest with its trickery.

Does it actually reach into one's mind? I'm not sure. I like to think it's more that it observes its potential prey carefully before attempting to trick it, to memorize its appearance and behavior. Perhaps it's more sneaky than you'd expect, and it leaves Deepnest to watch different creatures and learn their ways? Or maybe it does actually have an ability that lets it read minds. I haven't really thought about that too much. I imagine most of its prey is just animals rather than sapient bug species with unique appearances, so generally copying its prey's appearance is enough to bait it. And in the case of the vessels (since we see a lot of them in its den), that would also be somewhat effective as the vessels were very similar in appearance to one another.

Other updates from me:

- i bought omori from the switch -my friend found an app i can use to play his pc games from my phone (with the help of my ps4 controller), so i got to properly play a bit of hallownest vocalized (will resume when finals are over) and started a randomizer, as well as a silly save file where me and my friend play, switching every 5 minutes.

Maybe i'll invite my friend over after finals are done so we can continue our 2 player hollow knight file. He gets 1 joycon (remapped to only attacks), i get the other (remapped to only movements)

Now that i'm done briefly rambling about my life, song time!

Hopefully it all goes as smoothly as possible.
