my dream crossovers

this was another patreon-exclusive post that i'm posting here now because i'm not on patreon anymore. this one was from august of 2022.

i’ve been reading a lot of crossover comics lately between my alien vs. predator reviews and i also recently read (and really enjoyed) the teenage mutant ninja turtles/batman crossover.

on that note, i will say that there are a few i would definitely do if they didn’t already exist? including the aforementioned batman/teenage mutant ninja turtles crossover, as well as teenage mutant ninja turtles/power rangers (i would totally redo this one if it were only the next mutation/power rangers in space crossover, but there’s also a comic book that has the mighty morphin power rangers meeting the ninja turtles), king kong vs. planet of the apes, star trek/planet of the apes and teenage mutant ninja turtles/ghostbusters.

i also probably would’ve wanted to do like a star trek vs. star wars type deal back when i was way more into star wars, but i’m just so apathetic about the star wars franchise at this point that it really just doesn’t seem like a good thing for me to try to weigh in on. or any other star wars crossover, for that matter.

so! with all of those being cleared out of the way, let’s get into my dream crossovers that i would love to see become a reality.

godzilla vs. gamera

this is literally the first one that always occurs to me when this topic comes up, and the bitch of it is it almost happened. kadokawa actually approached toho in 2002 and offered to co-produce the mega-crossover, but unfortunately toho declined. the two did battle each other in a stage show in 1970, but otherwise the standard bearers for their respective kaiju universes have yet to properly meet.

thinking about what form this epic showdown could take, obviously the difficulty curve on a comic book feels like it should be the lowest, and is often where these kinds of crossovers start. unfortunately i’m actually not really super versed in godzilla’s comic book exploits, so i can’t really meaningfully comment on this. but considering godzilla vs. charles barkley was a thing back in the 90s and godzilla vs. the mighty morphin power rangers is a thing today, it feels like he should be able to take gamera on in comic book form, right?

the ultimate goal would be a live-action movie, though. and as much as i do love legendary’s cgi godzilla movies this would obviously be a suitmation affair. the plot will work itself out, i mean, it’s godzilla vs. gamera. as long as you give me what it promises on the tin, we’re gonna be fine.

sonic the hedgehog/teenage mutant ninja turtles

my starting point here is that a lot of the characters just match up very well. shads and leo are very serious and dedicated. knux and raph are angy and strong in so many ways. donnie and tails do machines. mikey and sonic are extremely silly and have absolutely the biggest, kindest hearts on their respective teams.

you lose this a bit with the primary villains as eggman is much more comically inept than literally any version of shredder other than the 1987 cartoon or next mutation. but if you bring satam eggman energy to the character you can probably have them coexist either as rival bad guys or teaming up to make everyone’s lives miserable.

obviously eggman is going to make all kinds of turtle-themed robots for this shit, fuck. probably mecha or metal versions of all the turtles, too. dude has one move and he’s gonna use it.

teenage mutant ninja turtles vs. x-men

the only acceptable medium for this is an animated movie, the overall look of which will be based on the 90s arcade games. the x-men team will be composed of the characters you’re able to select from in the arcade game: cyclops, colossus, wolverine, storm, nightcrawler, and dazzler.

the story will be very simple. the turtles and x-men will start off fighting through shredder/magneto’s minions separately and end up fighting each other at first but then end up teaming up when they realize shredder and magneto are working together. these will be the arcade game versions of both villains, so shredder will basically be a less pathetic version of his cartoon self and magneto will have no real character other than being evil and powerful.

teen titans/teenage mutant ninja turtles

look i know this list is very heavy with ninja turtles, but it’s just kind of amazing how many high profile mashups with the ninja turtles have been left on the table. also in the x-men crossover they had “mutant” in common, and in this one they have “teenage” in common, so we’re staying on theme, alright?

for this crossover i’m thinking we get the dc animated movie universe version of the teen titans. y’know, the ones from justice league vs. teen titans and teen titans: the judas contract. i just love this lineup with nightwing and starfire as their fearless leaders, i’d love more time to develop damian wayne robin and raven’s relationship, and beast boy and blue beetle are just the absolute best boys.

cyborg can come too.

sonic the hedgehog/batman

on paper there’s absolutely no reason this should work, but i’m sorry i just need sonic fanboying all over bats, shads trying to out-edgy him, knux taking damian or jason under his wing, tails bonding with tim drake over brain stuff and/or dick grayson over favorite sidekick stuff, and alfred just being sassy about literally everything.

also maybe flash can make a cameo just to set up the obvious race between him and sonic.

x-files vs. resident evil

you really think a zombie outbreak happens in a major city without fox mulder catching wind of it and bursting into the office that morning with a hearty “scully you’re not gonna believe this”?

given that i’m referencing the larger raccoon city outbreak i’d want this to be set around when resident evil 2 came out (1998), which places it around when season 6 of the x-files and the x-files movie came out. so obviously live-action is right out, so we’d be looking at either a comic book or cgi movie.

my thinking here is that mulder hears about the early stages of the outbreak from either the lone gunmen or one of his other sources. mysterious outbreak, corporate and police overreach, does this not sound like exactly the setup for an x-files episode? scully rolls her eyes at all his insinuations that they’re about to be in a real-life zombie movie but is happy to go along to try to deal with the weird police state bullshit happening, they see some creepy stuff early on and then get caught in the thick of the huge outbreak.

eventually they meet up with leon and claire and kick all kinds of zombie ass before making a desperate escape on the train and then we get some patented mulder/scully field note typing voiceovers (or text boxes if it’s a comic) to close things out.

out of all of these, this might be the one i have the clearest idea in my head of what it would be like. even though it’s probably not a crossover that would occur to most people unprompted, it feels kind of like a no-brainer when you think about it.

she-ra (2018) vs. thundercats (2011)

due to the tragic cancellation of the extremely fun thundercats reboot after just one season, this is the least likely one to actually happen. but, c’mon! the main hero has a sword with superpowers, there’s furries, this one is kinda obvious!

i think our catboys think the horde are the good guys at first because animal people are much more well-represented there, setting up the lion-o vs. adora fight. but when they figure out the horde are the bad guys, we get lion-o vs. catra! also mumm-ra teams up with the horde probably.

honorable mentions

star trek/ninja turtles

i don’t have much of a justification for this or an idea of how it would work, but idw owns both licenses and there were action figures depicting all the turtles as star trek characters so obviously i’m not the first one to have this thought!

teenage mutant ninja turtles vs. universal monsters

another one there were crossover action figures of. make it happen!

teenage mutant ninja turtles/kung fu panda

i didn’t super want to go to the trouble of fleshing this one out, but it feels like another no-brainer. and obviously mikey would have the biggest crush on tigress after she beat him up. obviously.

james bond vs. mission: impossible

another one i didn’t super want to flesh out, but ethan hunt’s real superpower is having friends so he’d kick james bond’s ass.

the owl house/she-ra (2018)

sadly i wasn’t really able to come up with a super concrete idea for this one, but both of these cartoons hit such similar spots that it really feels like there should be something here.

The Red Death

When i first met Arkady, i was struck by his tragedy. He was known as a serial killer, but the truth behind it was untold. Due to his mutation, anyone in the vicinity of him would fall sick, weaken and eventually die. First his family, and his childhood friends. Everywhere he went, people died. He didnt know why, but he knew it was his fault. It drove him mad. He gave in and stopped fighting who he thought he was. A killer. He learned to only accept it, but to find power and joy in it.

But that power, that joy is tainted. It's a lie, told to comfort himself. Because the truth was, he could never truly experience true love or happiness.

He thought he could, with me.

My memory of that time is hazy, part of a curse i'm under that took away the memory of my soulmate. The intention being to seperate me from ironfist and weaken our partnership. But he wasnt my soulmate everyone was lead to believe. It was a man nicknamed Sabretooth. And the consequences of wiping my memory of him, spanned wider and further than one couldve imagined.

Now here i am, investigating a series of mysterious deaths of the animals in a reverse.

I pick up his scent, and the stench of death lingers with it. But not of the animals he has killed, but of his own. My beloved Red is dying.

I was immune to his mutation. My counteracted his and we lived in tandem. He fed on the life force of living beings and i fed on their death and decay of their remains. His skin was white and mine was jet black. His eyes were red and mine glowed a bright blue. His hair was blonde and mine a dark red. I was his Tsarina and he was my Red.

I doted on him and every morning i was around him, i would style his hair for the day. It was our routine. And it meant everything to him, that little morning ritual.

As i squatted besides Danny and listened to him examine the animal corpses and bloody trails surrounding them, i knew i had to do something. I needed to protect Red. Just like i always did.

I did everything i could that day to knock them off their track. Danny and the reserve park rangers. I used my empathic powers to make them doubt crucial moves and decisions, so that they would go in completely the wrong direction. I could feel Red, i knew he was somewhere nearby, i kept track of his scent, using it to hone where he was, so i could find him later.

When the sun went down, they gave up the search for the night. I followed them silently back. They didnt talk to me anyway, both focussed on working it out together. That was always Danny's' fallacy, he would always underestimate what i could do. He would take things on to himself more and very rarely reach out for my help. He liked to isolate himself. I didnt mind, because im the same way. I understand.

There were times where i could feel like he wanted to, but he would then retreat back into himself. I had no interest in prodding him about it. My attitude was, if he wanted to talk - he'd talk.

Later when we were in bed and he was sound asleep next to me, i crept outside.

I had very little on. Just my nightgown, snow boots and long hooded brown fur coat. I was built to endure, so the cold and snow bothered me very little. I marched on, into the woods following the sickly scent.

Eventually i found the end. A shack, rotten and falling apart. The door was left ajar, so i opened it carefully and stepped inside.

It was dark, and i could hear coughing and groaning in the back room. My Red!

"Red....?"

The noises stopped and everything went very still and quiet.

"Red...it's me. It's Sessa. I'm coming in."

I gently walked to the back bedroom and i could see through the crack of the door a faint light from a camping lantern. It cast a soft glow across the floor. A couple of bed springs creaked as he moved off the bed.

"Tsarina?! <is it really you?>", his voice strained and he leaned against the door as it opened against his weight. I caught him before he fell.

"Da! <i am here. I am here now. I was nearby earlier when i caught your scent. I was with iron fist at the time so couldnt come sooner>"

"I missed you Tsarina."

His arms circled around my waist as he held onto me. I lowered him to sit back on the bed and he slumped on his side against the mattress and pillows. All the linens were old and well worn, and it was icy cold in the room. Is this where my Red was to die?

Yes.

There was nowhere else he could be. No where else he could go.

And out of everyone who lived on this planet, only i could be the one to be here with him, right now. To comfort him in his last remaining hours. He was so weak and in so much pain.

I looked around his room and saw the remains of animals he had killed. I tucked him into bed and i burnt and consumed the animal remains in the blue fire of my demonic power. When i finished i sat beside him on the bed and took his hands and passed on some of the resurrection power i hold in me. His Carbonadium coils came out of his wrists and wrapped themselves around my arms.

"<what are you doing?>", he enquired.

"<Just a little bit of life. It wont last long, but maybe enough for us to say goodbye.>"

His coils circled around my waist and i could feel his strength returning a little. He brushed his hand down the side of my face, catching my chin in his thumb and forefinger, he brought my face nearer to his.

Our lips met for the second time in the space we had known each other. And i was felt the yielding, wanting tenderness as he kissed me. His fingertips sought through my hair, holding my head close to his. He turned us over to our side on the bed and his legs entwined with mine.

The blood in my veins raced round my body as my heart broke into a millions pieces at his touch. The shape of him felt familar, as did the intense warmth between us. I wanted more, and i could sense he wanted the same.

He pushed the coat to expose my torso, and ran his tongue down the front of my neck, down the valley between my breasts, towards my stomach. I arched my back and shrugged my arms out of my coat. I held tightly onto the back of his head as he moved lower. I ached so much for his touch. It reminded me of something, but i couldnt place what. In the end i let myself go.

Two hours later we laid side by side, panting, intensely staring at each other. I could feel his strength being to wane. It wasnt going to be long now.

"Tsarina, you must do something for me."

"What?"

"<Please bear my child. Let me live on, with you. Please. I dont want my life to be in vain. I want to leave at least one good thing behind. Then i...Then i can rest in peace.>"

I knew already there was a 50/50 chance of that happening anyway, after what we just done.

He pleaded and i saw the look of despair and desperation in his eyes. It wasnt up to me, it either would happen or it would not. Mother nature would make the decision, not me.

But now was not the time for realism.

"<yes my love, i will have your child and i will raise them with the knowledge of how much you wanted and loved them. And i will do my best to honour that.> "

His hand rested on my cheek and he closed his eyes with a sigh.

"I missed you."

"I missed you too."

I had, i had missed him. I remembered feeling something but not being able to develop it. Keeping it at the back of my mind, pushing it away. I loved him, there was no denying it now. It comes in many forms, and my love for Arkady came from a place of compassion and pure empathy.

Both of us has been made to be monsters. Both of us had been denied things we needed to survive. Both of us craved deep down for a better life than the one we had been given.

Maybe now i can give that to him. Maybe.

He shuffled closer and rested his head against the side of my neck and his hand on my chest - over my heart. It beat into his palm, and every time it got softer and softer as i felt his life force ebb away. I felt it coming long before he did. And i was ready. I was making peace with it, as he clung onto me sobbing into my shoulder. I held him close to me and shushed him. He felt like a child, scared of the dark. I dove into his emotions and erased the fear and took the pain away. And i felt him slip away, along with the happiness i instilled within him empathically.

I held his body against mine for a little while longer, before i moved away. Then i put on my coat and took him outside to be buried. I broke off two pieces of wood from the shack and made a cross. I finished the burial by scratching his name into the wood and plunging it into the ground.

May my Red Tsar forever find his peace.

But i felt hollow inside and my head felt full of sorrow. I trudged back down the snowy slope, through the trees i whispered his name.

"Arkady..."

When i got back to the cabin, i went straight to the bedroom. Danny was stirred from his slumber and saw me standing there, with tears overflowing down my cheeks.

He rose and hugged me. He felt so warm, so alive. He felt and smelt of home. And i fell into him and sobbed my heart out. He held onto me tighter. And i whispered that it was Omega Red who had been behind the animal killings. He was dying, and i was protecting him and now...now he's dead.

He didnt say anything. He didnt need to, he just held me and i felt he understood.

I felt cold with death inside me. And it hurt so much. I started to shiver in his arms.

He put me to bed and wrapped me up against his body. He felt so warm, so nice. He felt like home.

I kissed him.

I kissed him again and he kissed me back.

We moved together, and he removed my nightgown. He filled me with warmth and life. He engorged me with light and with the feeling of love.

Neither of us knew where this came from, or even why we wanted this so much. We were friends, nothing more.

Werent we?!

No. We were more. So much more. I needed this. I needed him. And i felt his intense need for me, for this.

We didnt stop, we continued on, touching, kissing, pushing and pulling one another along. His hands trailing across my skin, setting it on fire. My lips trembling against his. Our moans in chorus - a sweet melody we made.

We melded together, and i felt a rising within me. Like an explosion of everything in the universe coming to a climax deep within.

To say we saw stars was an understatement. We came in unison. And everything changed for us after that night.

Fresh Start

(Not sure if this is official Pokémon art or fanart. If the later then please tell me and I’ll remove it.) Ok, First I’m going to explain my classification on the rare Pokémon and what can and can not be recruited, from what I’ve learned of pokémon from these past 20 some years. Legendary Pokémon I see them as a pantheon, making each one the only one until otherwise shown in the animes, movies, manga, and games; Arceus, Ho-Oh, Celebi, Regirock, Regice, Regirock, Regigigas, Latias, Latios, Groudon, Kyogre, Jirachi, Azlef, Mesprit, Uxie, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Cresselia, Darkrai, Heatran, Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, Keldo, Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem, Xerneas, Yveltal, Zygarde, Hoopa, Volcanion, Magearna, Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapa Bulu, and Tapu Fini. As legendary each is unrecruitable unless shown in any of the official series or because they are of a stature that recruiting them wouldn’t make sense one way or another.

Mythical Pokémon These are species that have more than one that have been shown in the animes, movies, manga, and games(or stated by the series that more than can exist) but are still rare to find and capture; Mew, Mewtwo, Lugia, Moltres, Articuno, Zapdos, Entei, Suicune, Raikou, Rayquaza, Deoxys, Manaphy, Phione, Shaymin, Victini, Meloetta, Genesect, Diancie, Cosmog, Cosmoem, Solgaleo, Lunala, Nihilego, Buzzwole, Pheromosa, Xurkitree, Celesteela, and Kartana.

EXTRA INFO Now I will elaborate on a few that can or have been recruited/caught. And there are other bits of info here. 1. The Regi Trio all have a trainer as shown in the series, thus I won’t be posting my game capturing of them as part of the JE as recruiting, even though I have in the game. 2. The Legendary Beasts have been shown to have others of there kind so I will mention them in my story should I receive one via event or in-game capture. Though it will most likely be a shiny as I have a shiny Suicune from the Heart Gold/Soul Silver event with shiny versions of the three. 3. There have been two Mewtwos shown in the series, one male by its voice & depiction and the other female by it voice & depiction as its reaction shows it was surprised Ash knew it. Plus to add to the evidence of that is that both Mega Evolutions were shown to next to each other in the anime or movie, I don’t right remember which. And with the recent Pokémon Tournament game having Shadow Mewtwo it supports my theory. So because there are three in known media I assume more of them have been created in the Pokéverse and so in my JE world there are more. 4. Genesect falls into the same category as Mewtwo, there is more than one. But since how they even reproduce is an unknown I won’t bother with them at the moment. There’s just too little info. -_- 5. Deoxys is an extremely rare species as they appear when a space virus mutates upon entering the planets atmosphere. Thus one can be caught. 6. It is stated that if one of the Creation Trio is caught then Arcues has the power to recreate another of them. So it’s of the highest of rare recruits and thus making an exception to their being only one. But as to what happens when the first returns after the trainer dies or releases it, I’m guessing Arceus simply has the two merge together or something, 7. Now as for Latias and Latios, these two have been shown as sibling Pokémon and did have a father. I can not speculate as to what the father was as Manaphy has shown that a child will not always be the same as the parent. 8. There a few on here I haven’t listed as there is little info on them. Thus I won’t be using them in my entries except for perhaps lore. 9. Now I’m gonna address villians, they exist in the world of my Journal Entries. I will have encounters with them occasionally but my Pokéverse self is not the hero who takes down the organization. So don’t expect anything like him going up against Giovani. 10. Also, villains in this Pokéverse have worked on making pokéballs and other methods that capture pokémon, but not recruited pokémon.(Note: Reason is because the recruiting balls register the pokémon under to the trainers team.) 11. Pokéballs come in to sets; Recruit Balls and Capture Balls. The difference between these two is rather obvious. There are variants though. For example, the Recruit Master Ball is for recruiting pokémon who are too strong for an average recruit ball. And a Capture Master Ball is one designed to capture and enslave any pokémon without question, but also to capture pokémon that are extremely powerful. I will make a complete list of the different Recruit and Capture Balls in a later post. 12. Because my Pokéverse self originates from Orre, Shadow pokémon are a historical thing and still pop up. Additionally there are other methods and occurrences that twist or corrupt pokémon and other creatures, even humans. 13. There is a sordid history when it comes to humans in the Pokéverse, at one time there were places and people who openly and without worry of consequence enslaved pokémon as their own personal property, whether it be as trophies, entertainment, or some other horrid reason. This is how the organizations such as the Ranger Union came into being.

The Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have crossed over before but this time it’s going to be even bigger. The original team-up between the two titans of kids TV rocked the world in the 90’s but it was with the Power Rangers in Space team and the turtles of the Next Mutation live-action series. Still fun to be sure but it wasn’t the exact way a Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles crossover had played out in many kids minds.

Since the Power Rangers exploded onto the scene several years after the Turtles ruled the world, fans had often wondered what would happen if the original Mighty Morphin Rangers crossed over with the classic four Turtles. Well, now Boom Studios is making it happen. Out now in comic book form, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 is a fans dream come true. The Turtles and the Power Rangers fighting against each other (and they aren’t under a spell!) Tommy working with the Foot Clan? It’s a ton of fun and it’s being written by the current architect of Power Rangers comics, Ryan Parrott.

We had to talk with Ryan about where the idea for this crossover came from, his way of writing the Turtles, and if this book fits in the continuity of either the Power Rangers or Turtles comic series.

DEN OF GEEK: What are the restrictions that come with writing two teams from two different companies (Boom and IDW) and then also two different companies who are licensing them as well (Hasbro and Nickeldeon)?

RYAN PARROTT: Not as much as you'd think. I've been actually very amazed at how open and excited they were about everything that we pitched them. They are just as excited about this as you were, which is one of the fun things. It’s obviously happened before in the TV show. They were just sort of like, "let's do what we can do," and they were open to everything. I couldn't be more complimentary about the process.

Was it you that came up with the pitch originally? Was it Boom? Was it IDW? Who was the first one to really talk about doing this?

When I felt my time with Power Rangers was sort of coming to an end, I was calling my editor to try and pitch. I was like, "What can I do? What's not being done right now?" I was like, "Oh, a Power Rangers/Ninja Turtles crossover?" And so, I called, and before I even actually mentioned it to her (editor Dafna Pleban), she was like, "Hey, I'm sorry there's nothing for you right now. We're too busy with the crossover." And I was like, "What crossover?" And she's like, "Oh, we're doing a Power Ranger/Ninja Turtles crossover." I was like, "That's what I was calling to pitch you!"

It was that weird moment of ... Everybody already knew. So I was jazzed. It was already in process, but they hadn't chosen a writer yet and they were still in the early stages. So I just started begging profusely to be able to do it. Thank God they let me do it, because I would've lost my mind if I hadn't been a part of it.

What was in your initial ideas for what this team up would be?

Well, my approach is ... it sounds silly, but it was more thinking of it like, "Okay, when I was 10 years old and I was playing with my action figures, what are all the things I wanted to see? What were the ideas that I had?" Because I had every action figure for both these franchises. I put my parents in the poor house.

(Some of it) came from the visuals. It started off with, "Wouldn't this be cool if…” And then it was through that process, that I started realizing that it makes sense. There are so many crazy similarities between these two franchises. If I described it, I'd say it's a group of color-coded teenagers fighting minions and trying to stop an evil despot from taking over the world while being led by a wise and noble sage.

I thought, "Wow, there's something... If that's how they're the same, how are they different?" That was the nice thing about having the crossover with (Power Rangers in) Space (having) already happened. Oh, they're already in the same universe. So maybe the Turtles know who the Power Rangers are, but the Power Rangers don't know what the Turtles are, because one of them is fighting out in the open and the other one is fighting and saving the world from shadows.

At that moment I realized, "Oh, that's the story that I want to do.” I want to see how these two people who are both doing the same things, but who have completely different lives because of who they are and what they're doing. Then the story evolved from there.

We’ve already seen from the Rangers and Turtles end up in a fight. With all team up books, do they always have to fight? Why can't they just be friends?

Well, I think it's sort of like if you've ever gone on a date with someone or you've ever met a person at a party, and you're like, "I don’t like that person." And then you get to know them better later on through a different situation, it's always like, "Oh wow, they're actually way cooler."

It makes the friendship or the relationship that much better when you have preconceived notions at the beginning And that's what's funny, don't we want to see who's the better fighter? Haven't we always had that thing of like, "Okay, so who would win in a fight, Leo or Jason? Who's funnier, Zack or Michelangelo?" And to me, that's half the fun, is I want to see that played out a little bit in real time before we all get to the fun kumbaya.

Does this story fall in any place in the timeline of the actual Power Rangers comic book? Or is it in its own nebulous team up world?

Well, doesn't fall in a particular slot in Mighty Morphin or Ninja Turtles, only because when you're doing a crossover, you can't rely on one fan base being as up to date on the other one as you'd like. But if you've been reading Mighty Morphin I can't expect that you also have been reading Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and vice versa.

If you're a hardcore Power Rangers fan but you're only a casual Ninja Turtles fan, or vice versa, I wanted you to be able to pick up the book and enjoy and not wonder who these new characters are, which is one of the reasons why Venus isn't in it. It's one of the reasons why Jennika’s not in it. It's one of the reasons why Matt isn't in it or Dayne isn't in it.

I don't want you to have to take this book and go, "I don't know who any of these characters are." So we tried to keep it as a love letter to the original two shows that I love. It's sort of a re-imagining of those two shows, if there had been a crossover episode between season one of Power Rangers and season one of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

You have the Ninja Turtles characterized in a different way from even, say, the 80’s show or any of the many iterations of them. Where did you draw your characterization of the Turtles? Was it from the recent comics or was it just your general memory of them?

We actually had a long conversation about that, because at one point we were like, "Are we going to do the Turtles from the comic book?" And I think the conversation was, "Let's do an updating, the same way that we updated the Power Ranger's in Go Go," where it was like, that was the character from the original series, but let's update them in a little bit more of a modern context. Let's update them with modern personalities a little bit. Let's do the same thing with them. Let's reimagine them the same way we would if we were doing that for the Ninja Turtles.

So in that way, it ended up becoming a little bit of my own version where I had to do a little bit of the show, a little bit of the movie, and then a little bit of the original Eastman/Laird comics which I wanted to make sure that I stayed true to that a little bit, too. It was a little bit of hodge podge with all of that. I will say, there were a lot of references to the TV show. There are direct lines and references to the movie because I am a huge fan of the first Ninja Turtle movie. I think it's fantastic and it still holds value. If you're like me and you grew up with that sort of thing, hopefully they stay true to the voices of all of those mediums put together.

In a way you're creating your own version of the Turtles, even though they're obviously an amalgamation of so much of what's come before. Is there anything that makes your Turtles stand out in comparison to any of the other versions?

They're just so incredibly well written. No, I didn't try and reimagine them in any way that I thought was extreme or subversive. I liked the characterization, I can hear their voices. Whenever I'm writing anything, I like to do an experiment where if you ask every character the same question, and if they answer it, they should all answer it different ways, because no one answers the same question. That's what I did with Ninja Turtles.

I just tried to make them as defined as possible, but there's nothing in there that I think that would make them like, "Oh, this is Ryan Parrott's Turtles." They're still the Turtles, hopefully the Turtles that you guys know and love. If you find that the voices are consistent with those characters, and even if you can't place exactly which medium they're in, then hopefully I did my job.

You talked about wanting to make this that anybody could come in to read it who's not a hardcore fan of either franchise. But was there ever any thought in your mind to say, "What if we just put Venus in there anyway, just because we can?"

I'm going to be honest, man, no. If you were to bring Venus into the story I wasn't entirely sure how timeline wise that worked. But it would've been a story about who Venus was. I feel like if you were going to do that story, you would have to almost do an origin story of that character, and then it becomes a story about Venus and not about the other turtles. So to me, leaving her out of it, I just thought made it so that I could play around with the Turtles that I grew up loving, as opposed to her sort of taking over the story.

if life were some crazy ass fictional thriller, i haven’t a single doubt in my mind that you and i would make it to the very end and live to tell the tale. we’d outsmart the treacherous villains that hail from the far reaches of outer space, run hand in hand from genetically mutated monsters, and fend off our grape kool aid pitcher wielding enemies with metal kitchen ladles and whatever else we could get our hands on. there would be no epic trilogy or “just okay but not as good as the first one” sequel; only an epilogue of how we loved limitlessly and lived happily ever after on a remote island inhabited by talking cats and dogs. everything would be yellow, and math wouldn’t exist. it’d rain grapefruit soda and naked smoothies and we’d have an endless supply of avocados that will never brown.

but luckily for me, life is much greater than a zealous mind’s wildest fantasy. who knew such a passionate and wholesome love could exist outside the silver screen, beyond the realms of the sweetest dreams; this is my reality. some people search their entire lives for that special someone— for their soulmate, so i oftentimes find myself asking how and why; what did i do to deserve you?

cue the broken record.

before i met you, i had long since abandoned the idea that love and i could co-exist together harmoniously; it was a game that i couldn’t play— a foreign language my tongue would never articulate. i allowed my past to define me, meriting my worth on the opinion of sheep. i swore i would never again soil the sanctity of love with these filthy hands, chasing down every temporary high to fill in the holes that i allowed people to burn in me. and then you wrapped your arms around me, and held me through the night when i couldn’t stand to breathe, a gust of fresh air to cut through the smoke under the guise of a beautiful boy with fire in his skin and a smile that’ll bring you to your knees. i was home, engulfed in a comfort i had never known— gentle, yet it hit me like a high speed train( would that make me a power ranger since i woke up safe and sound in my bed the next morning?) suddenly the prospect of love seemed promising if only i could love someone as beautiful and radiant as you, and i knew i would. always thought you had to put in the work for something like this, the type of passion you agonize over and bleed for, so imagine my surprise when i fell for you helplessly, and it was as easy as breathing. thank you for always having my back and supporting me, but most of all, thank you for saving me.

and if i must fight, it will always be alongside you. you’re my hero, and i’ll always be your sidekick.

in which I make wild speculation in how Venus would get under Big Mama’s thumb to bring her into conflict with her brothers for tasty, tasty knock down drag out fight choreography but I guess also familial angst idk mostly the fight choreo

At this point a quick review since I didn’t post the parts of this teeny self-indulgent visdev project in a clean succession

Rise reinvigorated the love I had for TMNT. I was around 8-9 yo eating up the Archie comic run, the 90s movies were coming out, and as seen on Twitter recently they were even interviewed by Barbara Walters. They were HUGE in the 90s. But especially the tv show, Next Mutation, and then the eventual team up with the (Lost in Space iteration) Power Rangers that blew little 13 year old snackugaki’s mind. ...And then Sailor Moon started and I jackknifed directly into anime and manga for the next several years; lost track of what was going on in DC, Image, Marvel, Dark Horse, One Saturday Morning, WB Kids etc.

But one thing nagged me when I started catching up with TMNT media since ‘98 (and before the IDW reintroduction) Venus had apparently been.... not at all well-received during her time-- which, a travesty, a tragedy that through this little thing I’d rectify what Next Mutation skimped out on.

Shout out to tumblr user @venusdeservedbetter because boy howdy, she truly did, does, and by my hand will or I will carpal tunnel trying.

One more note: In this little thing, I’m headcanoning Venus as another sibling. When I had first watched the episode that mentioned it, Venus sounded disappointed when Leo said none of them were blood siblings. In Next Mutation she was an only disciple/child to a single sifu/father figure and looking back now it hurts my heart that she seemed excited for a bigger family only to realize it didn’t really exist.

Join me for part 4b where I throw darts at a wall chart to see how Draxum would recruit her to learn alchemy and fight against her brothers because they rejected his whole Humanity Bad campaign and then that good, good wuxia trope of disciple vs disciple/martial siblings vs martial siblings happens.

when am I going to get back to working on my own shit? lol lmao who knows maybe after aug 5 jk unless idk ig
