maybe not a hot take but is anyone else like reluctant to get new atla content lmao. like the series is so genuinely incredible and the last time they tried to capitalise on that we ended up with The Movie and while i AM excited to have more conversation about atla and maybe even another renaissance (god ive seen what youve done for others... *is talking about the zukka renaissance of 2020*) im also very scared of what is going to be made canon. like a whole movie for zuko? you're gonna give that loser an entire movie now? he's going to canonically say a slur i just know it

The thing that bothers me about fanon characterization of Mu Qing as super insecure about his talent and abilities is that it erases what is, imo, one of the best things about him—the fact that he was a servant and still thought “I’m just as good—maybe even better than—the Crown Prince” and proceeded to prove it (and I think that’s exactly why Xie Lian liked him, because he also believes that people are good and talented regardless of their station or social class and being friends with Mu Qing reinforces that belief for him)
And to repeat my tags from another post: it’s not that he doesn’t have insecurities, but they’re not about his abilities, because he’s completely confident in them and deserves to be. He’s just insecure about how other people view him, which is something he can’t really control (except through reprimanding people in their dreams, but that doesn’t work on his fellow gods)
And in summary this is all a lot more interesting to me than another generic “I’ll never be good enough 🥺” characterization

8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
i have a lot of fandom opinions that everyone is wrong but me and my mutuals as everyone knows but like. shirase wasn't a bad dude. shirase was a kid, like chuuya was; shirase was a kid and the supposed god that kept his family safe was seemingly betraying the mfor the enemy. shirase was a kid without any home or family and craving the sense of power that came from leadership and that came from having his own autonomy. shirase was a kid, like chuuya was, so why doesn't anyone acknowledge that shirase did what he thought was best, even if it was at the expense of chuuya, even if it wasn't? he was fifteen. he had a decision to make. it was do or die and shirase had to choose. if you ever want to see the correct shirase takes, they're over at @nnavia because by god i have never seen anyone else acknowledge that shirase was literally just a kid.
9. worst part of canon
hands down the yen press translation & what it did to opinions on mori's character. look i think that this fandom would be much more sufferable if mori hadn't made the joke to fukuzawa about elise being his wife because of the sheer number of people who don't recognize that it was a joke. god. please.
10. worst part of fanon
i answered this one already here ! but to give another answer, a bad part of fanon has to be the treatment of atsushi. he's the main character. he is never treated like the main character; not only is he never treated like the main character, but i've seen honest to god discourse about people who portray atsushi as more jaded and mean than the common fanon interpretation despite the fact that fanon has uwu-ified him so much it's not even funny. not even getting into how fanon treats ranpoe as though they're babies because ranpo chooses to act childish; he is twenty-six. not fifteen. it's okay for people to write him like an adult, and ranpo & poe being weird because they are weird as fuck.
13. worst blorboification
oh boy this is a difficult one because. well. you know. but i'm going to give this award not to dazai or chuuya (again, too obvious, we're striving for not the obvious here) but to... actually i am going to give this award to dazai & chuuya, a joint win. because i cannot think of a single other character who has been blorbified as much as they have - not even atsushi, who just got uwu-ified, and mori, who got villainized. if people want to write them ooc, that's fine; do what you want, fanon is meant to be participatory, and having good characterization is not a requirement. but don't act like it's gospel and other people who treat them closer to canon are the assholes.
