Neal Francis Lets Loose and Closes Out Tour at Sold-Out Music Hall of Williamsburg
Neal Francis – Music Hall of Williamsburg – December 9, 2023
Not just a tuxedo, but an old-school tuxedo with a ruffled shirt. That’s what Neal Francis was wearing for his sold-out show at a hopping Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday night. His set was not just a party, but a throwback throwdown with plenty of ruffles, ridges, twists and turns. After a crowd-priming, soul-and-funk set from the Psycodelics, Francis and his quartet took the stage and with a “Good evening, Brooklynnnnnn” wasted no time getting everyone in the room moving. The opening “She’s a Winner,” off his 2019 album, Changes, was a winner for all, Francis singing from behind a bank of groove-inducing keyboards while his band kept the time.
The set was a free flow of fiery dance motifs, a Saturday night party that extended into three dimensions of funky: width, depth and height. Francis announced that it was the end of the tour and that they’d be “letting loose tonight,” although it seems unlikely that they don’t let loose every night they take the stage. Guests appeared early, the guitarist from the Psycodelics for the third song in, adding slide guitar on “Can’t Stop the Rain.” They went wide with this one before curling back in on a ruffling groove to expertly reprise the song in a slower rework.
“Prometheus,” another highlight, showed off the band’s depth as it opened into a psychedelic slow-roller synth jam. The opening act’s horn section came out and took things higher, bringing Stevie Wonder “Superstition” vibes to the extended boogie of “Changes.” Francis and Co. showed off their end-of-tour tightness, expertly corkscrewing through the grooves and somehow following the frontman as he brought the set back to “She’s a Winner” again to finish the set. For the encore, the entirety of the Psycodelics were onstage, a now-massive band for a massive jam that bounced along themes of Sly and the Family Stone’s “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” and ostentatious ruffled-tuxedo-shirt ending to the night and the tour. —A.
“Sentimental Garbage was the working title of our last LP”, so Francis, “We ended up calling that record In Plain Sight while removing the title track from the sequence. I knew this was my last chance to slap Sentimental Garbage on a record jacket, the thought of which always brought me great joy. It also works because this record is compiled of bittersweet scraps.”

Top 10 characters from Hannibal I'd want to play but it's all for whore reasons that get more and more deranged as the list goes on:
1. Hannibal Lecter - I will get held half-naked in Laurence Fishburne's strong arms and get to kiss Gillian Anderson and Caroline Dhavernas and get straddled by Hugh Dancy and Gina Torres will slap me
2. Margot Verger - I gets to kiss and have intimate scenes with Hugh Dancy and Caroline Dhavernas
3. Will Graham - Mads Mikkelsen is gonna lovingly caress my face and my hands and hold me up by my hair and call me a cunning boy
4. Antony Dimmond - I wanna be the awkward third between two people so bad and you're telling me he got to insinuate that with Gillian Anderson and Mads Mikkelsen? I'd die for that cause.
5. Francis Dolarhyde - I get to kiss and have intimate scenes with Rutina Wesley and I can throw Hugh Dancy across a room and Mads Mikkelsen will rip my throat out with his teeth
6. Freddie Lounds - I just think I wouldn't resist if Hugh Dancy stalked towards me with murder eyes and a knife and tried to pull my hair and implied he was going to eat me especially if I got to see his dick later
7. Frederick Chilton - Listen the way it happened in the show was wild but I would not be opposed to Suzy Izzard rearranging my insides
8. Neal Frank - I just don't think dying with Gillan Anderson's beautiful hand shoved down my throat is the worst way to die
9. Winston - Maybe I also want Hugh Dancy to give me a bath and affectionately dry me off and pet me a lot and train me
10. Miriam Lass - Being trapped in Hannibal's hole 👀

The Success Story of Marvel’s Secret Invasion Crossover Event
In the autumn of 1961, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced a shape-shifting alien race who we would know as Skrulls. They would make their first appearance in The Fantastic Four no. 2 and they would get entangled with the Avengers a few years later during the Kree-Skrull War. No one had imagined how this alien race would make a comeback that would have a lasting impact on the Marvel Universe as well as its readership
While Secret Invasion was published in 2008 before that Brian Michael Bendis had been planting the seeds for it in Avengers: Disassembled, New Avengers: Breakout, and Secret War. Something big was about to happen but no one had any idea who was behind it or why. The success lay in the fact that Bendis had remained tight-lipped throughout and every crossover event that followed up until the time when the full-scale invasion happened, shocked the readers, made them wonder about the characters they were so familiar with and whether they were what they showed themselves to be. It wasn’t about Skrulls shape-shifting to look like humans or superheroes and even super villains, it was also about the adoption of their target’s personality completely. This wasn’t a Personality Disorder, it was the Order!
Marvel's Secret Invasion comic book crossover event was highly successful for several reasons. Here are some key factors that contributed to its success:
1. Strong Concept: Secret Invasion had a compelling premise that captivated readers. The story centered around the infiltration of Earth by shape-shifting Skrull aliens who had replaced key Marvel characters. This concept generated excitement and intrigue, as readers were left guessing who was a Skrull and who could be trusted
2. Impactful Storytelling: The event was meticulously planned and executed by writer Brian Michael Bendis, who created a suspenseful and intricate storyline. Bendis crafted a narrative that had significant repercussions across the Marvel Universe. The invasion resulted in significant character developments, shocking reveals, and dramatic confrontations, keeping readers engaged and eager to see how it all unfolded
3. Character-driven Drama: Secret Invasion explored the psychological and emotional impact of the Skrull infiltration on the Marvel heroes. The story delved into themes of trust, betrayal, and identity, as beloved characters faced the unsettling reality that their friends and allies could be impostors. This focus on character-driven drama added depth and complexity to the event
4. Wide-scale Impact: The event had far-reaching consequences beyond the main Secret Invasion series. Tie-in issues and spin-off titles explored the invasion's effects on different corners of the Marvel Universe, involving various characters and teams
Brian Michael Bendis will forever be remembered for making the Skrulls an unclear and ever-present threat at a scale that would make his predecessors admire him in the Valhalla of comic creators
Secret Invasion MUST Haves:
