Building Homes with Hemp: A Sustainable Revolution
Hemp, a versatile and eco-friendly material, is gaining recognition as a game-changer in the construction industry. From reducing carbon emissions to providing superior insulation, here are three compelling facts about building homes using hemp.
Carbon Negative Construction: Hempcrete, a mixture of hemp fibers and lime, offers a remarkable benefit to the environment. When used as a building material, hemp absorbs and locks away large amounts of carbon dioxide during its growth cycle, resulting in a carbon-negative construction process. This means that building homes with hemp can actively reduce carbon emissions and contribute to combating climate change.
Superior Insulation and Energy Efficiency: Hemp-based materials exhibit excellent thermal insulation properties, outperforming traditional construction materials. Hempcrete, for instance, provides superior insulation, reducing the need for additional heating or cooling. This increased energy efficiency not only lowers utility costs for homeowners but also reduces reliance on fossil fuels, making hemp-based homes more sustainable in the long run.
Durability and Healthier Living Spaces: Homes constructed using hemp materials offer remarkable durability and longevity. Hemp-based composites are resistant to pests, mold, and fire, providing a safer living environment. Additionally, these materials allow for better breathability, preventing moisture build-up and improving indoor air quality. By choosing hemp for construction, homeowners can enjoy a healthier, more sustainable living space.

‘The Shelter’ by Pedro Moncayo Torres Arquitectura This project’s success is in the way it becomes a part of its landscape through materiality and volumetric approaches. Its constructive system - based on vernacular architecture - becomes a link between contemporary elements of the project and the majestic endemic landscape surrounding the home. Local stone walls, artisanal brick flooring, reed cane, clay roof tiles, and a traditional wooden structure roof provide a stable thermal balance for the home without needing contemporary Western energy systems. I DON’T NEED ANY TUTORIAL!
I know that besides my followers there are many knitters and I’m sure many of them at least one time in life thought that, having some knitting experience, it’s not difficult to create a knitting pattern. I must say that it’s not so easy as it seems. Even having 22 years of knitting experience, I continue to buy knitting patterns time to time cause it’s easier to spend money than to spend time. In my life I had many confirmations of this idea. Let’s see why I believe so.
Having created more than 35 original designs I must say that it’s not easy to create a new one. If you still want to try you should:
Choose a model. Maybe it’s not difficult, you can use one seen in a knitting journal. In this case it’ll not be original, but why not.
Choose a knitting patterns. If you already have some ideas about what you want, you have to spend at least a couple of hours to find it in special pattern books. You can knit a model without any pattern, for example in the stockinette or the garter stitch, but I’m sure it’ll look not so interesting as with it.
Measure your knitting tension. For this you should make swatches of ALL the patterns you’re going to use in your project and to count your gauge for each one. Otherwise, you can find yourself in the situation when different patterns will have different gauges and you’ll be unable to use all of them in one model.
Take measurements and make all necessary calculations for your size(s). For this you need to know goodly how to take measurements in the right way and how to transform them in row and stitch numbers.
After all those steps you can start to knit your project. Here I must say that it never works from the first time. I make changes and remakes 2-3 times in average  during the knitting.
As you see the process isn’t easy at all. A knitter, who buy knitting patterns, don’t think about all those steps and frequently believes that pattern prices are too high.
As a knitwear designer I must say that all those measurements and calculations take about 30% of time I spend to create a pattern. Ones, I tried to estimate this time and it was about 6 hours for a jacket design. Pay attention, I write only about the time which is necessary to have an idea, to make a swatch (or swatches) and to calculate stitch and row numbers for 3 different sizes. This time doesn’t include the time that is necessary to knit a test model, to write a pattern text description or to make process and tutorial photos and videos.
Do you still believe that it’s easier to make a new knitting pattern than to buy it?
