Past to Present: The Hybrid in Retrospect
In the world of Hip-Hop few and far apart are the seminal voices that shake up traditional styles to birth something new and dynamic. Detroit's Danny Brown is one of those voices, who's managed to win over a cult-like fanbase due to his unique stylings and often strange antics.
With the recent release of his joint album w/ JPEGMAFIA accurately titled "Scaring the Hoes" I couldn't help but harken back to the Danny Brown cuts that initially caught my ear.
......
Sometime in late 2010 an acquaintance of mine was playing various new rap cuts in between bits of a writing process to generate our own rhymes. Early in the mix of songs that was something that I had never heard before and it stood out like a sore thumb. The track was "Shooting Moves" from Danny Brown's critically acclaimed debut album "The Hybrid". To clarify, while many see "XXX" as his initial album there is a large swath of folks who remember and revere the former record as their intro.
To be quite honest, at the time I would've considered myself a purist of sorts whose favorite hip-hop records came with a more backpack kind of sound so my initial reaction to Danny was something of disgust. It's truly bizarre that I had an outright distaste for what I was hearing but for some reason or another I couldn't help but revisit that song for about a month wondering why someone would voluntarily listen to it. His voice was shrill at times and often totally out of tune and the beat selection was something otherworldly altogether but I couldn't leave it alone..... and then it clicked.
......
To those of you familiar with the Kingsway Sample Library the name Frank Dukes will ring plenty of bells. To those who aren't, just know that Frank is a sort of musical savant who plays and records original samples that have been used by producers such as Jake One, Hit-Boy, Kanye and even the elusive Madlib. Before the unfolding of what's become a brilliant career Frank Dukes was another producer on the rise and many early Danny Brown tunes including "Shooting Moves" featured Frank's inventive brand of sampling and arrangement.
"Shooting Moves" happened to be the tip of a rather bizarre iceberg. Once I managed to wrap my head around the wild sonics and strange flow patterns I was hooked. Soon after I discovered "The Hybrid" which was then and still is one of my personal favorite albums of all-time.
The opener "Greatest Rapper Ever" starts in with a spacey modulated sample and the perfect drum break crafted by none other than Quelle Chris. Danny's starts in immediately with the following lyrics:
My homie a magician with the Tec (Tec)
Make your chain disappear and reappear on his neck (Neck)
I ain't tricking with your hoes (Nah), but, shit, don't ask 'em (Nah)
Only thing I give a bitch: A fucking orgasm (Chyeah)
I'll throw you in the river (River), hands tied tight (Tight)
Watch your ass drown, feel it in the air tonight (Tonight)
I'm spitting that dope shit (Dope), smoking on regulars (Ugh)
Writing sixteens like internet child predators (Chyeah)....
To say I was floored is an understatement. Never in my life had I heard something so awe inspiring, it's the kind of reaction that only happens on very rare occasions like when you first heard Kid A by radiohead or something but if I were to put it into a rap nerd perspective is comparable to the kind of feeling I get when I listen to "Ready to Die" by Biggie. Something so viseral yet indescribable that it makes you wanna punch something and cry heavy tears at the same time. I'd wager that I played that track at least ten times before starting in on the rest of the album which was immaculate from track to track.
......
Most notable on this release in terms of cadence and approach to rapping is the intermingling of Danny's various vocal tones. Post "XXX" his signature high pitched register is a calling card of sorts but "The Hybrid" is an example of his early attempts at perfecting such a cadence. Albeit biased this is my favorite era of his work for just that reason. Danny was in the up and comer space and as a result was still trying various sounds and deliveries. As a result from track to track the album gives us a wise spectrum with which to engage and paints fine brush strokes with a myriad of colour palettes. Songs like "Greatest Rapper Ever" feature a more brash and confrontational tone that harkens to his background in the ghettos of Detroit while others like the closer "S.O.S." have a more soft and poetic undertone.
A great example of the projects versatility is a track titled "Juno" which I assume is titled after the Elliot Page (formerly Ellen Page) and Michael Cera film. This cut has Brown giving an unadulterated observation of the struggles and disappointments that are birthed as the result of unplanned pregnancy in a poverty ridden landscape. The opening line references Tupac's "Brenda's got a baby" directly paying homage to what might've been the songs direct inspiration but rather than take the more soft and thoughtful tone Danny's delivery embodies the type of frustration and disgust that breeds itself among those in dire straights. It's quite literally the ugly truth in it's purest form and as ugly as it might be it draws you in and keeps you coming back.
Another stand out is "Drinks on Me" features an utterly intoxicating instrumental and has Danny reflecting on the ills of alcoholism through an introspective lens. This track observes the various angles and vantage points that "normalize" alcohol within society and touches the core of the subject matter succinctly. From drinking as a means of celebration to drowning one's sorrows in a bottle of their choosing it's one of those songs that's managed to get me into my feels even when I'm in the best of moods and although counter-intuitive pairs well with a drink.
For those familiar with Danny's work beyond this period, you'll feel right at home with joints like "White Stripes". It's one of the earliest examples of the pitch and delivery we've all come to know so well. The sample is a grungy mix of dirty guitar fuzz and big drums that function like an 80's power ballad. The rapping is something all it's own as the vocal inflections aren't quite as embellished as Brown's subsequent releases. The tone is a great range of vocals from low to medium and higher registers and is a lot more fluid than the years that followed in my own opinion. You can hear the energy of something new being brought forth. It's the kind of thing that happens when someone makes something they know is good but hasn't field tested it to see if the flame will catch. Nonetheless it makes for one of the most memorable and awe inspiring offerings.
......
I could wax nostalgic about this album from front to back for ages. it holds a really special place in my heart and in my library and for those who haven't explored it I urge that you do so with urgency and the utmost intent. From Danny's off the wall fashion to his unique and eclectic style of rapping/songwriting much of what the so called modern era syphons from is owed to albums such as this that birthed and inspired so much of what proceeded them.... but don't just take my word for it.

Roc Marciano & The Alchemist - The Elephant Man’s Bones
(Gangsta Rap, Jazz Rap, Ambient Rap)
Atop The Alchemist's minimal, sinister beats, Roc Marciano indulges in some of the most tense and humorous music he's put out to date. The Elephant Man's Bones' juxtaposition of calm production and ruthless, cold-hearted bars from Marciano make for one wonderfully dark and luxurious listen.
☆☆☆☆
Named after the Englishman Joseph Merrick, the man who inspired the title of Roc Marciano and The Alchemist's latest album perfectly embodies the duo's artsy, nefarious songcraft. Known as the Elephant Man as a result of some painful, severe physical deformities, he spent his 27 years being both mocked and revered by the public as a biological anomaly, his life explored in a myriad number of books, films, and stage plays - at one point, it was reported that Michael Jackson was so moved by Merrick's life story that he allegedly offered $500,000, later a full million, to purchase his skeleton from the Royal London Hospital. Marciano and The Alchemist share a similar fascination in the lines between disturbing and elegant, The Elephant Man's Bones mixing Marciano's tales of street violence, drug-running and expensive couture with beats that are restrained, colorful, and organic. Far away from Marciano's traditionally cold, heavy sound, The Alchemist's smooth and slightly off-kilter production pushing Marciano into new territory that shapes his rapping and presence to be stronger than it's been in years, The Elephant Man's Bones breathing new life into his skillful, deadpan bars.
The Alchemist is an unexpectedly great fit for Marciano, his recent production for albums like Armand Hammer's Haram or Conway the Machine's God Don't Make Mistakes translating perfectly to Marciano's cold-blooded presence as he turns his production inside-out, emphasizing clean samples and rich keyboards that are as elegant as they are menacing. I honestly haven't enjoyed The Alchemist's production as much as I do here in a long while - I never was the biggest fan of how his beats landed with Freddie Gibbs on 2020's Alfredo, and his one-off beats on albums this year like SICK! and Crocodrillo Turbo were some of my least favorite of those projects - but there's a comfort and effortlessness to his work with Marciano that takes things to a level of luxury and richness he hasn't approached until now: the way opening track Rubber Hand Grip blends smoky keyboards with sharp, anxious string drones that immediately set the albums tone; the heavenly sample on the title track or the dusty loop driving JJ Flash forward. Not one of The Elephant Man's Bones' beats disappoints, all contributing to the album's mix of left-field lounge jazz warmth and cold-hearted lyrics that make it such an ominous, satisfying listen.
And Marciano's bars are stronger than they've ever been, a clarity and cleverness to his writing that seamlessly integrates into some of his most villainous and menacing stories to date. Daddy Kane references everything from Breaking Bad to Olympic gymnast Suni Lee and Jimi Hendrix, and somehow ties it all together as Marciano contemplates his success over a fuzzy electronic drum loop and vintage synths, and the narcotized beat Alchemist throws onto Liquid Coke is fit just right for him to both throw out some of his signature blunt threats ("Don't make me dig in my bag, the magnum ain't gift-wrapped / ...It's not a catch twenty-two, this a TEC-22") and reflect on the ways he's been affected by that same criminal violence a few lines later ("Expensive clothes won't soothe / All this ice won't remove my bruise"). It seems linking with The Alchemist for a longer project has got Marciano less bottled up than usual, the rowdy sound of their one-off's together traded in for a methodical and detailed approach to their songcraft, quotables scattered all about the album's fourteen tracks - some of my favorites being "For me to line you, don't need a barber's license" from Deja Vu and his clever wordplay in the second verse of Trillion Cut ("These ain't no regular old bars, this a five star restaurant") - without Marciano ever being in your face about it, his assuredness in his rapping abilities and lyrical wit paying off immensely as him and The Alchemist sustain the album's sensitive mood across the entire 38 minutes. Keeping an album with as minimalist and left-of-center a sound for artsy East Coast rap as The Elephant Man's Bones' this enjoyable all the way through is quite the challenge, and they do it with endless charisma and personality.
Two of rap's veteran players, Marciano and The Alchemist have been at it long enough to know the best parts of their music and how to tap into them time and time again. Working with one another, they exercise those strongest muscles with support from one another that champions their ability to pull you into their world and have you hang onto every word, Marciano's voice and The Alchemist's moody beats the only two things needed for The Elephant Man's Bones to keep its winning streak alive the whole way through - even the few bumps in the road aren't all that bad in the slightest. Marciano is a specialty performer, with a single voice and refined style he bends around any beat The Alchemist throws at him, and The Elephant Man's Bones' reliance on the fact that the two of them work so good together doesn't ever cause the album to stagnate as they consistently find new angles for Marciano's voice to wrap around The Alchemist's fuzzy, whiskey-scented beats. This is genuinely some of the smoothest, loveliest hip-hop I've heard in a good while, the duo rarely missing any of their shots and delivering a killer collection of colorful, delightfully subtle rap songs that never take more than they need and still land deadly blows with just a few bullets in the chamber. The Elephant Man's Bones is unlike anything either of them have done up until now, but it sounds as if they've been honing their craft together for a lifetime - how special is that?

Our track "Au Revoir" can be found on disc 1.

Here is the original release text:
The highly satisfying Musical Mastication series is back, with another jam-packed double grab-bag of hot sweaty nosh to make you phat for the dancefloor and ready for the plunge.
This time we’ve gone double whoop, with a pair of wide-arse CDs that are bound to leave you running for the rowing machine at dawn.
We heard your calls of ‘why can’t I go on holiday’, so we decided to bring the hotel resort to your living room, complete with fresh air removal to make you feel like you are really abroad, and not just broad from all the home-living.
The first CD ‘Nosh On The Spinning Platter’ gives you those daytime vibes of wafting waiters, broken snooker cues and half-filled bingo cards, with several greasy courses of gooey grub that will make your jaw ache from the heavy mastication.
The second CD ‘Night-time By The Pool’ allows you to cover your eyes with your damp trunks, lie back under the stars and feel those mozzies suck you dry as you sup your 2 litre cocktail of rum with rum and extra rum in the dark on the concrete slabs next to the hose.
This really is an electronic spa banquet with teeth, and it’s guaranteed to have you coming back for more, not least because the lift is broken, there’s gangsters hangin’ out in the stair well, reception is closed, and all of the bedrooms have PVC mattresses.
So come on, grab yer flip-flops and let it all hangout over the edge of everything with this truly indulgent holiday fiasco from mars…

Album reviews
Paul Haig is an independent songwriter, music producer and vocalist. He was originally the lead singer/songwriter in post-punk band 'Josef K' ('one of the most influential bands in Britain' - The Guardian). Paul has just finished working on his thirteenth solo album and it is the most involved and time consuming to date, incorporating a wide and diverse range of styles and production.
Album Reviews:
The former Josef K mainman's 13th solo album further ploughs his recent furrow by uniting found sounds, speech, glitchy programmed rhythms, samples of instruments and passages of electric guitar to create a form of environmental music nodding to Jon Hassell's Fourth World music as much as it does to similarly minded collagists such as Four Tet. (Mojo, 12/2018)
"Whether you want to hear a contemporary synth dance vibe or some guitar redolent of his 1980s band Josef K, The Wood will fulfil those needs. It won't be long before clever DJs from Ibiza to Miami are dropping portions of Sun Flicker, Acoustic Mangles or Floaty Appy into their sets, I'll wager. Younger generations please report back" (The Herald, 11/2018)
The Wood finds Haig exploring samples, beats, electronics and 'found sound' to sculpt something that's split into eight parts, but very much fit together as a whole. A soundscape of the strange and strangely danceable among the tranquillity in the forest, or of the mixed up feelings of the soul, or both, well that's what I think may be intended anyway." But everything here fits and you have to admire Haig's craftsmanship in the way it has been put together - producing a musical storybook without words in effect. Forty years into his recording career he's still breaking new ground. Long may he strive for the outer reaches, because those who want to be challenged a little in their listening will lap this up." (Louder Than War, 09/2018)
"We like records that push boundaries, and this certainly does that. Sure, Haig has pop hits at his finger tips, but with the eight tracks on The Wood he twists the formula. Opening with the kitchen-sinker Chasing the Tail, its soulful/folky vocal presses hard up against a plinky piano and swooping strings before a delicious locked-down groove takes hold; it's like three songs at once. The Wood is a collection of like-minded tunes rather than a journey from start to finish, but it is yet another bold record in a long line of bold recordings from Haig, a man who deserves your attention". (Electronic Sound, 09/2018)
"This Autumn sees Haig return to Les Disques du Crepuscule to present ‘The Wood’, his most ambitious studio album yet. An experimental exploration in glitch, house, jazz and more, ‘The Wood’ was written and recorded over a three year period with the spectre of twisted sonic technicians such as FOUR TET, FLOATING POINTS and LOVE OVER ENTROPY looming". Paul Haig spoke to The Electricity Club about his musical adventure in ‘The Wood’..(TEC, 09/2018)
"An atmospheric and experimental collection of eight tracks recorded over a three year period. Hooks and melodies are strong on an album that has more in common with contemporary electronic music than the existential post-punk of his original band Josef K. Haig is to be applauded for not taking the easy route, but the robust song composition throughout The Wood should win over fans who take time to listen.. 8/10" (Vive le Rock, 12/2018)

The Murmur of Yearning (93k)
Four years ago, Harry Styles was forced into a marriage of convenience to enrich and ally both his and his promised's families. The sudden, and slightly suspicious, death of the Marquess of Haxshire, however, brings great disturbance to Crescentfield Hall and, as his late's husband's closest male relative, Harry unexpectedly finds himself the head of a family he never felt he belonged to. Between a meddling distant cousin hellbent on inserting himself in Harry’s life, his wicked and mistrustful mother-in-law and his late husband’s advisors refusing to help or take him seriously, Harry struggles in the fight to keep what he’s earned and make the Estate finally feel like home.
Luckily, he doesn’t stand completely alone and finds himself an unlikely ally in Mr Tomlinson, the elusive Land Stewart who has been taking care of the property in the shadows for years. Louis Tomlinson is caring, patient, and unlike everyone else, he doesn’t seem to think Harry committed a murder.
‘Sup (6.7k)
Gemma really wants her little brother to sign up for a dating app and get back in the game after a messy divorce. Harry thinks he’s way too old to swipe. They compromise to devastatingly embarrassing results.
Meanwhile, all Louis wants is to finish the play he’s been commissioned to write, but one of the regulars at his local coffee shop keeps distracting him.
ft. older larry, pushy gemma, harry being a disaster gay and silver fox louis.
Tired Tired Sea (113k)
As a B&B owner on the most remote of all the British Isles, Louis Tomlinson is used to spending the coldest half of the year in complete isolation, with his dog and the sea as sole companions. Until, one day, a mysterious stranger on a quest to rebuild himself rents a room for the winter.
The Blood of Words (33.7k)
Louis Tomlinson hasn’t sworn off relationships per se. He just doesn’t think he’s quite ready for one yet, despite his therapist’s encouragements. He’s comfortable in his position as editor for Styles Publishing and he’s happy to focus on his career while he gives himself more time to heal.
Enter his CEO’s brother, a boxer with a heart of gold who is determined to carve himself a space in Louis’ life and, more importantly, his heart.
Peace In Your Arms (1.5k)
The happily ever after ...
Or a series of TEC codas
the dead things we carry (25k)
September ‘49
He hasn’t seen him since that day in France, that horrible muddy day where for one terrifyingly long second, Louis really thought he was going to die. He winces with the phantom pain, the hand not holding his cane going to his stomach automatically, remembering the franticness, the tenderness, of Harry’s hands while Louis was bleeding out.
This is the man who saved Louis’ life.
For one second, Louis fears Harry won’t recognise him, but his eyes widen when he turns to his left and they meet Louis’. He takes a step forward, reaching for him with a shaky hand before stopping himself.
“Louis,’ Harry says with a shudder and Louis doesn’t think his name has ever carried more weight.
This is the only man Louis ever thought about kissing for real.
“Oh,” Mrs. Padley says, clearly taken aback. “You two know each other?”
There are some things people never fully come home from. Until, one day, if they’re lucky, home comes to them.
Things Gone Cold (24k)
"your heart is warm for things gone cold.”— Sophocles, Antigone
With his soulmate’s thoughts about him written on his skin and the world’s eyes trailing his every movement, Harry Styles is having a bit of a rough time releasing his second album in peace. And that’s not even counting the breakup. Or the car crash.
Through Eerie Chaos (102k)
For as long as anyone can remember, Old Hillsbridge Manor has always been believed to be haunted. Everyone in the village agrees and keeps a respectful, fearful, distance. New in town after a bad breakup and an internship that led to disappointment rather than a permanent job, Harry Styles figures taking pictures of the decrepit building could be a great new creative project. Or at least a much-needed distraction while he searches for a job and crashes at his parents’ new house. No one warned him about the apparitions though; about the music, the laughter, the people who flicker and vanish when you call after them, the echoes of a past that should be long gone… Harry has never believed in spirits but even he can admit that there’s something weird going on. What starts as mere curiosity evolves into a full-blown investigation and soon enough, Harry finds himself making friends with an aristocrat from the 1920s and struggling with finding the best way to tell him that he’s dead.
The Ghost Hunter AU where Niall lives to prove ghosts are real, Zayn is a skeptical librarian and Harry gets caught up in a century-old mystery and catches feeling in the process.
Sleep It Off (844)
I've felt better ! Hello 2017 !!
What do you mean he’s coming? (15k)
When Harry accepted to be his sister’s Maid of Honour, despite how non-traditional of a choice he was, he didn’t think writing a speech for the wedding reception would be this hard. Now, not only does he have less than two weeks left to find something moving and inspirational to say, but Gemma just confided in him that her old childhood best friend is going to be in attendance. The one who moved to LA and they haven’t seen in fifteen years because he was too busy becoming an Academy Awards winner. But hey, no pressure. It’s just Louis Fucking Tomlinson.
Harry is screwed.
a fully armed battalion (to remind you of my love) (5.6k)
“He was flirting with you by the way,” Niall says casually once he’s finished saying goodbye to Louis and he’s joined Harry outside.
“No he wasn’t,” Harry replies automatically, feeling his heart clench at the thought. Was he?
Niall simply raises a mocking eyebrow in response before wrapping his scarf twice around his neck.
“Not that it matters!” Harry says quickly, eyes widening. “I wouldn’t care even if he did because he’s awful and the worst.”
Everyone at Hogwarts knows that Professor Styles and Professor Tomlinson absolutely despise each other. It's too bad that they're in love.
Coax the Cold (86k)
England, 1897.
English Professor Louis Tomlinson’s passion for the occult has been a source of mockery and derision for most of his life. When he hears whispers of a travelling freak show newly established in London claiming the existence of a monstrous sea hybrid, half-man, half-fish, Louis sees it as his ticket to credibility amongst his peers. The summer he spends undercover working on the show, however, gives him much more than that.
All These Lights (34.8k)
“People vote for alphas because they’re strong and they’re not only beautiful but also mesmerizing. They make you want to give them all of your attention, make you want to beg for some of theirs back. They’re shiny, oozing sex appeal and a commanding presence, and people always want more and more. Omegas are enticing too for sure, but it’s not the same. It makes people uncomfortable. It doesn’t make them want to root for you.”
the canon fic where Harry is an omega and dreams come with a price.
wash him deep where the tides are turning (3.7k)
"When Harry finally tells Louis about his family’s curse and the true love spell that broke it, they’ve been dating for seven months, nineteen days and about twelve hours and Louis’ cock is buried deep inside his arse."
Part two of a practical magic au.
a long way down (to the bottom of the river) (24k)
“ Most people would call Harry silly for believing in curses. Childish would also be a probable insult thrown his way. In their little town full of little people, Harry’s whimsical nature and beliefs mean that he’s subjected to frequent judgemental looks and whispers. It doesn’t usually bother him. Most people don’t know about the magic thrumming through his veins or about how powerful words can truly be. Most people don’t carry around their ancestors grief like a burden. They don’t have to pay for deeds hundreds of years old like Harry and his family have. They get to love freely without fear.
Harry and his kin aren’t so lucky.”
a practical magic au in which Harry and his sister accidentally kill her abusive boyfriend with magic and Louis is the D.I working the case.
loose lips sink ship all the damn time (not this time) (39k)
“Louis Tomlinson is gay,” Fiona announces and she sounds calm at least.
“That’s not a scandal,” Nick replies automatically even though he feels slightly sick. He needs to call Louis back. Now.
“No,” Fiona agrees quickly. “But his underage gay sex tape is.”
The one where Louis is outed via a sex tape he made before the X-Factor and Nick can't resist flying to America to give him a shoulder to cry on. Told through flashbacks, this is a story of getting together and getting back together.
all that i’ll ever need is in your eyes (4.2k)
Louis has known he's going to marry Harry Styles since he was eighteen years old. Five years later, he has the perfect proposal planned. Too bad he can't help blurting it out while they're detained at the mall.
hi hater, kiss kiss (3.8k)
Nick has had a crush on Louis Tomlinson ever since he first saw him perform on the x-factor. Almost four years later, he's finally accepted that their ongoing, unstoppable feud is the only thing the two of them will ever share. One game of Call or Delete with Niall Horan, however, starts to shake this belief.

Snapshots of Harry and Louis' relationship through their last year of sixth form.
Warning: There is no plot. Only fluff.
the last people standing (at the end of the night) (7.4k)
Sequel to the greatest pretenders (in the cold morning light)
A year after his undercover assignment ended, Louis should finally feel at peace. With Cowell & Co finally dead or behind bars, his life is more simple than ever. It's too bad his feelings can't be buried as deep as the people he's lost.
An undercover cops AU
you think fashion is your friend, my friend (fashion is danger) (27k)
"Louis has one rule, and one rule only, that he simply refuses to break. He forbids himself to be attracted to anyone he might work with. No wanking to models who might wear his clothes! It’s hardly fair, considering he spends 95% of his time working with the most attractive men on the planet, but his career is more important. Besides, in Louis’ experience, it always leads to disaster. Harry Styles makes respecting the rule really damn hard though and Louis is not quite sure why."
the one where Louis is a famous British designer and Harry is the clumsy, most likely straight model that makes his heart race.
the greatest pretenders (in the cold morning light) (41.5k)
undercover cops/the departed au
Louis and Nick are on two different sides of the law and mobster Simon Cowell is not the only person they have in common. The one where Louis is an undercover cop and Harry is the court-ordered shrink who refuses to prescribe him Valium.

How Harry Styles Became A Modern Style Icon
by Phoebe Luckhurst - Evening Standard 15/11/19
A man wrought in the fires of teenage boyband hyper-stardom is not afraid of a little commotion. Still when Harry Styles — the One Direction matinée idol turned languid Gen Z icon — tweeted, at 1.01 pm GMT on Wednesday afternoon, that he would be taking his upcoming album Fine Line on tour, you could, if attuned to the correct demographic frequency, hear the howl echo around the internet: guttural, hungry, ululating. This was a pseudo-religious experience: one viral meme depicted the Pope holding a copy of his album aloft. The announcement has been retweeted almost 70,000 times.
The 25-year old is a tour veteran — he spent five years and five albums strapped to the thundering 1D juggernaut — but this new tour is his first as a bona fide solo brand. The album, his first in two years, is synth-soaked and soulful, the album’s aesthetic fever-dreamy. Granted, he’s not the first person to go to SoCal, try a few magic mushrooms and declare himself radically transformed, but the results are beguiling — and certainly a world away from his years as a Simon Cowell Ken doll. Since his last record, he has co- hosted t he Met Gala and been reborn as an Alessandro Michele muse. This is your Styles crib sheet.
Melody maker
Styles’s new album — written under a tie-dye mist after taking the aforementioned psychedelics, which also resulted in a mishap in which he bit off the tip of his tongue — is “all about having sex and feeling sad”, which, granted, as a topline, does not wildly differentiate the record from the genre of “al l other music ever”. Still, the early signs for Fine Line are encouraging. Its first single, Lights Up—which has been streamed almost 100 million times on Spotify —is synth-y, soulful, understatedly anthemic, very different to, and better than, the lead single on his last solo record, the Seventies, soft-rock Sign of the Times( it still, of course, hit No 1), and very, very different from anything he did with 1D. Many thousands of words have been written about whether there is a bisexual subtext to Lights Up. It has been noted that the song was released on National Coming Out Day, that Styles’s sexuality has been subject to frenzied speculation before, the video features an oiled-up, topless Styles gyrating around men and women, and that the lyrics (“Shine, I’m not ever going back/ Shine, step into the light”) could be interpreted as a meaningful revelation of sorts. Certainly, he has become a queer icon — especially with Gen Z — who are thrilled by his selection of genderqueer singer-songwriter King Princess as his support act for the European part of his tour. Speaking of collaborators, Styles worked on the album with producers Tyler Johnson, who has worked with Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and Ed Sheeran, and Jeff Bhasker, who has collaborated wit h Mark Ronson and Kanye West, and his friend, Tom Hull, aka Kid Harpoon, who co-wrote Shake It Out for Florence + The Machine. He has also been granted a fairy godmother: Stevie Nicks, who called him her “little muse” at Fleetwood Mac’s hyped Wembley headline gig i n J une. “S he’s a l ways there for you,” Styles has said in the past. “She knows what you need: advice, a little wisdom, a blouse, a shawl.” Sure.
Got Styles
Any young man raised in the white heat of a boyband spotlight must be granted the space to find his fashion path; Styles has done so with no missteps and exuberant pleasure. Once upon a time, he would semaphore his individuality with a bandana; now, he turns up to a cover interview with Rolling Stone in a white floppy hat, blue denim bell-bottoms and Gucci shades, his nails coloured pink and green. His favourite trousers, until he lost them on the beach, were a pair of mustard corduroy flares; this week, he wore a Lanvin sweater vest with a sheep design that sent a coterie of London menswear stylists into throes of ecstasy. He wears floral suits and Cuban heels, ruffled, New Romantic shirts, Charles Jeffrey jumpsuits and pussy- bow blouses. It is flamboyant, self-consciously Bowie/Jagger, and in Gen Z parlance, “very extra”. His stylist Harry Lambert is partial to an extravagant collar, dramatic neckline and a voluminous trouser.
Besides Lambert, another part of this evolution has been his relationship with Gucci’s creative director Michele, who has turned the Italian heritage brand into the ultimate post-gender luxury fashion label, the first to merge their menswear and womenswear, and dispatch male models down the catwalk in dresses and women in suits. A good look for a Gen Z idol.
With the brand
Notably, the branding on this album and its tour artwork is consistent with this new look Styles. The album cover features Styles i n white custom- made Gucci bell bottoms and a Pepto Bismol-pink shirt, open almost to the waist, shot by mod-goth Tim Walker with a fisheye lens (it is Walker’s hand in that S&M glove you can see in the left-hand corner). In the dreamy video for Lights Up he wears a glittery suit and suspenders, in a sort of hallucinatory version of Saturday Night Fever. Into it.
Stand up
Then there’s his voice — not the music, but the activism. Even as one-fifth of a boyband manufactured by Cowell’s algorithm, he was quick, quippy and itching to go off-message; but now that he controls his own, he is amplifying causes such as Black Lives Matter and End Gun Violence. He wore stickers for both on his guitar on his last tour, which might sound small, except that photographs of Styles gallop around the digital world at hyperspeed. At concerts, he has waved pride, bi and trans flags, and a Black Lives Matter flag. He once borrowed a flag from an audience member at a show in Philadelphia that read, “Make America Gay Again”. At a show on his last tour, he declared: “If you are black, if you are white, if you are gay, if you are straight, if you are transgender — whoever you are, whoever you want to be, I support you.”
A vocal, engaged fandom of teenage girls minted his multimillion-pound fortune; he is loyal and admiring of their zeal. “They’re the most honest — especially if you’re talking about teenage girls, but older as well,” he told Rolling Stone this summer. “They have that bullshit detector. We’re so past that dumb outdated narrative of ‘Oh, these people are girls, so they don’t know what they’re talking about.’ They’re the ones who know what they’re talking about. They’re the people who listen obsessively. They f***ing own this shit. They’re running it.” Obviously, he’s a feminist. “Of course men and women should be equal. I don’t want credit for being a feminist. I think the ideals of feminism are pretty straightforward.” An icon is born.

Winx Club Season 8/12
In which Valtor finally gets his villain on! (eventually)
12 Surprise Party on Earth
We open with some more nice wide shots of Valtor’s asteroid. Our villain is in a thoughtful mood, which I’d screencap for you if my program did caps. He also seems to be wearing purple eyeshadow, which continues to prove my point that eye makeup = evil in the Winx ‘verse.
He’s watching a big all-round hologram of space, and suddenly a comet streaks across the view. Valtor is delight! This is “the wishing star. It hasn’t been seen in the magic universe for almost a thousand years! I must have it! It’s the only way to make my ultimate wish come true!”
Sounds interesting!
But here comes Obscurum to interrupt Valtor’s rant. “Ahem. Sorry to interrupt such a glorious dream, your Foolishness, but you do know your dark powers will prevent you from getting anywhere near the wishing star.”
Valtor already knows, but he says he can power up be getting himself some Cosmix! And he does a really lecherous grin and we cut to…
Orion’s ship! Orion does the most adorable, “What did you bring me from Syderia?” and is delight when Bloom presents him with the crystal of “condensed star energy.”
Twinkle suggests using it for a paperweight or bookends but Orion says he can make a prototype mini star core. If it works he can make new cores for all the stars Valtor destroyed.
Bloom’s phone buzzes. Shy is suggesting a romantic dinner. The Winx are immediately all opver the romance, except for Tecna, who is...having that geekfest with Orion that I wanted her to have a few episodes ago! They’re talking about how to boost the power of the new star cores.
Stella: “Who needs romance when there’s some new hypertechnothingamajig about to be built?” ^^
Bloom says Tecna and Orion are right, the mission needs to come first. “I’m just sorry Sky and I have so little time to see each other.” Bloom sounds quite chipper, but her face is sad. I think the actress didn’t do the emotion right for that line.
Flora suggests the Winx can handle things so Bloom can see Sky, but Bloom has to go to Earth for her mom’s birthday. So she has to turn Sky down.
Tec and Orion are still talking star cores. Adorable.
So the rest of the Winx will continue to do outer space stuff while Bloom heads to earth.
Cut to Gardenia! Mike is waiting on the beach, holding a cute picture of young Bloom. She turns up, and they hug. They’re going to throw a surprise party for Vanessa. Mike says it should be easy since Bloom can just snap her fingers and do it with magic, which brings up a whole bunch of thoughts about what it would really be like if some people could use magic like that. Well maybe magic is like money, one-percenters can snap their fingers and make stuff happen too.
But Bloom wants to set up the party without using any magic!
Mike is going to take Vanessa out to lunch so she doesn’t suspect. He asks Bloom if she’s sure she doesn’t need help.
“Dad I’m a fairy, I bring light back to drained stars. I think I can handle a party.”
Cue predictable comedic failure montage! Bloom attempts to set up a beach party without magic and stuff goes wrong.
On his Asteroid Valtor is talking to himself again. he’s looking at a projection of the universe that’s going from blue to purple which I think means the spread of drained stars. He’s gotten a lot, apparently.
“I’ve drained the light of one star after another to increase my powers, but the Winx always manage to save the day! No more! they’ll never stand in my way again, once the Cosmix power is mine...” Counting your chickens before they hatch, huh Valtor? He rants a bit more. His plan is to get at Bloom through her family.
Obscurum turns up in a hologram; he’s on Lumenia. His favorite spot. He rambles a bit about becoming king.
Valtor dumps Obscurum through a portal into a river.
Beach! Vanessa arrives for her surprise party! With a bunch of people we’ve never seen before. Bloom did get it set up without magic.
Sweet moments with Bloom and her family. Bloom’s given her mom a photo album with pictures of her childhood. They talk about Bloom’s adventures in space, but she says her home will always be with them. She also says that all the places she goes are places I trouble, and she looks quite pensive, and Mike reminds her that here in Gardenia she’s safe.
No mention of Bloom’s other family—which is fine, I love her earth family, but it does make me wonder if the Season 8 Timeslide has erased Bloom’s Domino family from the timeline. That would be a pretty big change.
As they go to cut the cake, Valtor decides it’s time to blow the earth’s candle out! He opens a portal near the sun… but not the mass of incandescent gas that we know it as, this sun is a honeycomb ball of glowing yellow stone. Staryums pour into the caves.
But the sun’s lumens are badass! They’re Roman lumens with lil helmets and armored skirts and some of them are carrying blowguns they’re prepared to defend their light!
So the staryums get together and turn into starchomps.
Roman lumen attack! Darts away! I think they’re shooting starlight from their blowguns.
The starchomps get together and grow into an even bigger stompy monster! It scares the lumens away and starts punching the sun’s star core!
The rest of the Winx meanwhile are on Lumenia. Tecna shows off the prototype star core to Queen Dorana. Dorana worries, quite reasonably, that once the stars are repowered the staryums will just come back and drain them again. She wishes her brother Argen were here; “he’d certainly know how to stop them for good.” flora reassures the queen that her brother will come home soon. And until then, the Winx will fight them1
Twinkle reminds everyone that we don’t want to hurt the staryums. Then she flies and hugs Queen Dorana’s foot, which is very cute but Dorana looks kinda uncomfortable. She reminds the girkls that she turned Lumilla back to herself by hugging them. So more hugs should turn the rest of the staryums back!
Dorana is skeptical.
Musa and Aisha do not like the idea of hugging staryums! Anyway, there aren’t enough of us to hug them all!
Flora says that hugging is the only way. ‘Only when they feel loved and accepted will they turn back into lumens.
Well I guess it’s a version of the Kiss of True Love, the Hug of True Acceptance? I once read a book where they were trying to disenchant some people and there was a line about “it has to be true love, not brotherly love” which made me wonder if there are other spells that would only be lifted by Brotherly Love.
Anyway, Queen Dorana feels unwell suddenly and sinks to the ground. Something bad is happening! Twinkle’s projector-thingy shows the sun is under attack! Everyone’s worried! They leap into action!
Party is party. Then it goes dark! The sun is flickering!
Valtor summons dark giants from under the sea! I presume he left them there earlier. They’re the same color as staryums but not furry, they’re more towards “made of living shadow” type of look, with a eye-ish circle on the head, lines of mystic runes, and Valtor’s mark. Very cool. Two of them come tromping towards the beach. People panic and run.
Bloom: Oh, well, now I’ve got two problems to solve. Save the sun and save Gardenia from those whatever-they-are!” She sounds wonderfully exasperated.
Mike says there’s only one Bloom, but she says she’s never alone. And calls Sky. This isn’t the date they wanted, but giants are attacking.
Sky: “Let me guess, Valtor?”
The Specialists will fight the giants while Bloom hugs her folks and heads for the sun. Sky did want to go with Bloom, but she basically ordered him to do giant duty. I wonder if this will come up in their inevitable couple-drama. Bloom flew off in Cosmix, but it doesn’t show her transforming in front of her parents.
Inside the sun the rest of the Winx face off the punchy monster that Aisha calls a megachomp when Bloom arrives. Megachomp punches things, then it noms the core in one bite. Heh. He just swallowed it.
Flora: “Maybe if we hug him he’ll turn into… well, a lot of lumens.”
Stella: “Sure Flora. You go first.”
They decide on some magic zapping instead.
Then there’s Valtor! In the flesh! The first time he’s left his lair all season! He’s floating just outside the cave. Stella even comments on this, saying he’s never crawled out from under his rock before.
Valtor: “Are you kidding, Stella? This is a special occasion! The sun’s gone dark, the earth is about to be destroyed, and Bloom will be forced to make the hardest decision of her life.’
Valtor summons a portal and blasts Bloom through it. Then he ducks back through his own portal, escaping.
In magic-space, or outer space, our hero and villain face off.
Bloom: “We beat you before, Valtor! And for sure we’ll do it again!”
Valtor: “I only lost because I let you do my bidding. But you won’t get away with it so easily this time.”
...what? No really, what did that sentence even say? ‘Let you do my bidding’..? What?
Bloom summons magic. Valtor summons an image of cars on the highway and people flee from Gardenia, while the giants tromp towards shore. On the beach Vanessa refuses to leave until she knows Bloom is safe. Well that’s dumb.
Bloom: “They’d better not be in any danger!”
Valtor: ‘Oh, sorry, it’s too late. They already are.”
Who WROTE these lines? -_-
Dark giant summons flying staryum-monkeys that attack the people on the beach!
Bloom is ready to fight, but Valtor is the only one who can stop the ‘stargoyles’ and the dark giants. So Bloom can’t take him out or the monsters would be freed from his control and run amok, he’s saying. Bloom says the specialists are on the way, but Valtor points out that his monsters are already THERE, innocent people are about to be toast, right now.
Bloom: Then I’ll fight them myself! I’m not scared of your dark magic!”
Valtor laughs. “Ah but if you save your parents, who’s going to save your friends?”
And we see the Winx having no luck against the megachomp, which looks a lot bigger than in the last scene.
Valtor: ‘And you know, without the sun your parents won’t survive anyway. They trust you. Will you betray them?”
Yes! THIS is an appropriately evil Valtor, at last! Once his lines started making sense.
Bloom looks back and forth between the two images, unable to decide.
Valtor presents his third option: give him the Cosmix power.
Bloom: “Never! You’d become even stronger!”
Valtor: “Right. But it’s still the best choice.” he promises to let everybody live if he gets the power.
Bloom wavers.

Zanger ‘A writer shade of pale’ overleden
A Whiter Shade of Pale
'Air On The G String', een compositie van Bach.

Export Hi Tec - FUBUHITEC
Great hip-hop with an open mind and an eclectic feel.
Summary:
Hailing from Baltimore, Export Hi Tec is a rapper, producer and mixing engineer who really sets the bar higher in terms of creativity and vision.
Review:
Export Hi Tec is a talented rap artist with a really unique vision. Inspired by seminal performers such as Wiz Khalifa, Soulja Boy or 50Cent, he is all about delivering that punchy, clever and witty lyrical flow to the audience. His unique blend of rap music combines elements of alternative and underground, but it is also very catchy and unique, making for a really powerful and direct feel.
Recently, Export Hi Tec set out to release a fantastic brand new project titled “FUBUHITEC.”
This release is currently available throughout all major music retail platforms, and it is constantly gaining momentum due to its exciting production value and masterful execution. Export Hi Tec has a really unique voice, and his lyrical content is also very engaging. His music truly has a very different style, and it is a great example of what is happening in the Baltimore music scene, where this artist is from.
For him, music is first and foremost a way to express himself, and great hip-hop is all about honest storytelling. What better way to share, tell stories and connect with the audience? This EP has songs that blur the lines between different styles and ideas, and each song has a slightly different feel. In addition to performing all of the material, Export Hi Tec actually mixed and mastered everything on his own, meaning that his creative control also extends to the way he creates the music and soundscapes, and not just songwriting!
As a result of such a personal artistic involvement, Export Hi Tec really managed to make this release sound very personal, yet punchy and competitive with all the other rap that’s out there. The low end is always punchy and fat, while the songs have a lot of presence, without ever being harsh. The best thing about this artist is definitely the way he utilizes his talent to really set the bar higher and try new ideas. Some rappers are stuck in the same old patterns and cliches, but maybe the fact that Export Hi Tec is also able to produce himself, mix and master his own tracks, can also be seen as a way to push creativity and try new things, without feeling stuck in the same patterns!
Find out more about Export Hi Tec, and do not miss out on “FUBUHITEC” and other exciting releases from this talented artist.
