Terrifier (2016, dir. Damien Leone) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
Terrifier had a lot of the same problems that All Hallows' Eve did. There are multiple counts of weird misogyny, with increased violence being targeted specifically at the female characters. Their deaths/disfigurements are significantly more brutal and disturbing than the male character deaths that happen (a few of which just happen completely off camera). It's frustrating to see that, in the 3 years that passed between this film and All Hallows' Eve, there was practically no personal growth on the part of Leone. However, I won't waste precious digital space rehashing the same complaints from the last review across this one, and instead try to focus on what this one did actually do better.
Let's get the easy one out of the way first, Leone's practical effects are even better in this than they were in the previous film, and they were already pretty damn good in that one. The budget is bigger for this than it was for Hallows' (this film was the result of a very successful Kickstarter campaign following a massive internet interest in the Art the Clown character), and it shows. The quality of makeup and prosthetic work Leone achieves with what, while bigger, is still a fairly low budget is quite impressive. Also, Art the Clown is the sole antagonistic focus of this film, and his screen time has grown exponentially. There's a change of actor from Mike Giannelli, who played him in All Hallows' Eve, to David Howard Thornton. This is a welcome change, as Thornton's physicality and facial expressions can read more sinister and goofier than what Giannelli was able to do in Hallows'. Art is more menacing in this one, and you feel the impending doom from the second he appears. Also, there were a few moments where the movie was able to break through all the groaning noises and eye rolling I was doing and pull a couple of chuckles out of me. The kills are creative (and would be really impressive if the film and the writing surrounding it weren't so lackluster), the atmosphere and vibe gives off 80s B-movie slasher (even if it is the bad kind of 80s B-movie slasher), and, again, Thornton's performance as Art is commendable. It just still has way too many issues for me to even remotely consider this a good film. It's better than All Hallows' Eve, for sure, but not by much.
Score: 4/10

'Terrifier 2' - Old School Horror at its Bloodiest and Goriest
‘Terrifier 2’ – Old School Horror at its Bloodiest and Goriest
For those of you who thought “Halloween Ends” did not deliver in the way a horror film should, and I’m still not sure what you all were expecting with that one, “Terrifier 2” definitely delivers. While David Gordon Green and his fellow filmmakers looked to challenge what we have seen in the past, writer and director Damien Leone is more than happy to wallow in genre conventions as he gives us all…

Terrifier - 2016
Jenna Kanell, Samantha Scaffidi, David Howard Thornton, Catherine Corcoran, Pooya Mohseni, Matt McAllister, Michael Leavy
Review: Some horror movies can balance the gore and the storyline well. You can still have disgusting gore like The Blob or The Thing and still have a great story. This movie builds the story around the gore, and it really shows.
The acting is actually really good for the most part. The main character ran weird, and she runs a lot that was a little hard to watch, and the sister Victoria wasn't very good. I also got confused multiple times because I thought the actresses for the sister and the crazy homeless lady looked a lot alike.
The gore was very very over the top. It's easily in the top three goriest movies I've ever seen. It's like the director and writer worked together on the gore effects, and then just tried to come up with a story that got to use all of them. The girl being cut in half by the saw was especially brutal, maybe one of the worst scenes I've ever watched.
The clown was super creepy, and the fact that he never made a sound or spoke just added to the creepiness, even after being stabbed or hit across the face. The smile was fucking creepy.
If you want to see some people be literally ripped in half, then watch this movie. If you're looking for a plot anything past random people running into a warehouse just to be slaughtered by a clown than this isn't for you. The effects were cool, I would show someone just to gross them out.
5.5/10

TERRIFIER 3 | Teaser & Poster
Cineverse, in partnership with Bloody Disgusting, unveiled today the online teaser for Terrifier 3.
This development follows the recent announcement that Terrifier 3 will hit theaters nationwide on October 25, 2024.
During the re-release of Terrifier 2 in theaters on November 1, which came in at number 5 in gross box office, fans had the opportunity to catch the Terrifier 3 teaser. The teaser also revealed an intriguing twist—the upcoming installment will be Christmas-themed, adding an extra layer of anticipation for horror enthusiasts. In the third installment of Damien Leone’s breakout horror film, Art the Clown is set to unleash chaos on the unsuspecting residents of Miles County as they peacefully drift off to sleep on Christmas Eve.
The release date of Terrifier 3 is 2 years after its predecessor, Terrifier 2, which was released theatrically on October 6, 2022. The ultra-gory, 138-minute unrated film ravaged theaters during its highly publicized theatrical run, pulling in over $11 Million in domestic box office. During that time, Terrifier 2 found its way to mainstream press with Variety detailing how Terrifier 2 “became this year’s unlikeliest box office success” and how the film “is inspiring horror fiends and skeptics to go to their local cinemas in droves to assess the hype for themselves.” Terrifier 2 became CERTIFIED FRESH by Rotten Tomatoes and the movie even found its way onto Stephen King’s radar with the “IT” author Tweeting that Terrifier 2 is "grossin' you out old-school." The New York Times called Terrifier 2 “the little horror movie that could” while calling it “the most talked about horror movie this Halloween.”
Terrifier 2 marked the next horrifying chapter in the Art the Clown saga; in which the demonic killer, portrayed by David Howard Thornton, returns with a vengeance. Lauren LaVera became a breakout star and fans across the world embraced her as the next Final Girl. Terrifier veteran Samantha Scaffidi reprised her role as Victoria Heyes, and horror icon Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp) and professional wrestler Chris Jericho (AEW) made unforgettable cameos that had audiences talking.
Writer/Director Leone said, “Terrifier 2's remarkable success was driven not only by the insatiable appetite for new and thrilling horror icons like Art the Clown but also by its unparalleled theatrical release and marketing, along with its unyielding spirit. In a cinematic landscape where risk-taking is scarce, I will continue to push boundaries in Terrifier 3,and I can’t wait for you to see what’s in store for Art the Clown.”
Set one year after its predecessor, Terrifier 2 continued the gruesome story of Art the Clown and his insatiable thirst for murder. When a sinister force resurrects Art, he is once again upon the unsuspecting residents of Miles County. Back for another Halloween, Art sets his sights on a teenage girl and her little brother, portrayed by LaVera and Elliott Fullam, respectively, delivering a chilling and relentless tale of horror.
Terrifier 2 is developed by Dark Age Cinema and Fuzz on the Lens Productions and features an original score by Paul Wiley. The film is produced by Phil Falcone, Steven Della Salla, Jason Leavy, and Michael Leavy. The list of executive producers includes Cairo Ben Amen II, Joshua Anderson, Steven Caruso, Lisa Falcone, Hank Greenberg, Marcus McGill, Larry Bilello, Steven Barton, and Thomas Smith.

https://archive.org/details/michael-moorcock-wizardry-and-wild-romance
I have no intention in this book of “defining” the term epic fantasy. Neither doI expect my polemics to convince anyone already opposed to my points of view. In general I intend to discuss the subject of Romantic Fantasy (with the obvious exception of its modern commercial corruption describing a sentimental love story) and specifically touch on that area of fabulous romance whose writers in- vent their own Earthly histories and geographies. Romantic fiction (especially that by South American writers) is enjoying something of a vogue and is currently accepted as a respectably serious mode by our literary establishments. Actually most European fiction originally contained strong romantic elements and it only gradually became fashionable to exclude them by the mid-1oth century when the rift between popular and “‘seri- ous” fiction began to manifest itself. It could be said that Jane Austen established our taste for the novel of manners but it was Victorian middle-class morality which established that type of fiction as the only respectable form (F. R. Leavis went one step further, insisting that only this kind of fiction could reasonably be called art). Nonetheless, all the great 19th-century realists introduced strong strands of romance into their work and some of them, notably Flaubert with Salammbé and Meredith with The Shaving of Shagpat, produced gorgeous works of full-blooded and fantastic invention.
