Siena basketball's Michael Baer takes advantage of extra minutes
Tumblr media
ALBANY - Siena men's basketball graduate forward Michael Baer, who played a total of forty five minutes in three seasons as a college of Iowa stroll-on, noticed 27 minutes of action on Monday in a seventy seven-70 exhibition victory over the school of Saint Rose now and then Union middle. Baer finished with 12 facets on 6-of-9 capturing with four rebounds and three steals. He had lower back-to-again baskets on a jumper and layup right through the 16-2 run that enabled the Saints to rally from an eight-aspect deficit within the 2nd half. "It turned into pleasing," Baer referred to. "I in reality had nerves at the beginning because it's probably been on account that high college for the reason that i was on the court docket like that. but I obtained (27) minutes and the nerves went away fairly early on. i used to be in a position to get an early bucket, Rob Mahala fed me for a left-exceeded layup in transition and after that I felt variety of relaxed accessible. nevertheless it become just wonderful to be on the court docket, peculiarly (because) the TU hasn't had fanatics in perpetually, so now being out in entrance of fans, it turned into in reality very unique, principally for an exhibition game." Baer, at 6-foot-7 and 212 kilos taking part in each power ahead and center, confirmed a face-up game that he honed in observe at Iowa whereas dealing with All-American core Luka Garza in practice each day. Baer scored 10 career facets in 20 video games with the Haweyes. "Yeah, I basically needed to be artful the final 4 years because Luka's 6-eleven, or going towards Tyler cook, who's very athletic and 6-9, 6-10," Baer observed. "the entire guys are taller than i am, so I needed to be crafty and that is the reason stuff I've labored on and it's turn into extra comfy to me as I've gotten older and that's the reason part of the development in my online game. I suppose I obtained to demonstrate that a little bit tonight." Baer spoke of he tried to observe leadership counsel he bought from Iowa and former Siena teach Fran McCaffery when the Saints fell in the back of within the 2nd half to Division II Saint Rose. "One issue I discovered at Iowa from teach McCaffery is, you can not panic," Baer stated. "You on no account panic at all and i try to carry that because in my fifth year, I are attempting to bring that veteran presence and that i consider i used to be capable of carry that tonight." At Iowa, Baer began his career as a pupil supervisor from Bettendorf, Iowa before joining the team as a stroll-on. he's on scholarship at Siena and performed on Monday in entrance of his father, John, who made the commute. "He simply is aware of a way to play," Siena head coach Carmen Maciariello mentioned. "I believe it truly is a credit score to his basketball acumen. He changed into a child that played definitely each position in high faculty. We knew that once we were recruiting him and he desires to play and he desires to learn and he is a sponge." 토토사이트

In search of a sound mixer/boom operator combo for an upcoming short film (digital) project titled Rosie's Necklace. We are looking for an individual to run sound on set with their own equipment including but not limited to a boom pole with directional microphone, audio recorder, and a couple of lav microphones.
When: July 17 & 18. Schedule is yet to be nailed down, but we are expecting at least 8 hour days with filming to run after sun down on both days (not to exceed 11pm)
Where: Bettendorf, IA
Compensation: offering $100/day. We know that for what we are asking regarding knowledge and equipment, this is a low ask. And with that, if you are interested in joining us on July 17 & 18 to help create our short film, please DM me or shoot an email to [email protected]!
More about the project and who is involved:

Слава Силе))
Ура, кто-то уже это сделал)) Все упоминания Санни в других арках))
1. PROFITT: Several references here. First, during INDEPENDENT OPERATOR Vinnie shows Roger a newspaper article describing Vinnie as "one of Steelgrave's close associates." Then later when Susan first meets Vinnie she questions him saying, "Things didn't work out too well for Sonny Steelgrave. And for a guy who was supposed to be keeping him healthy, I think you had a spectacular failure." Vinnie answers, "Sonny lived for danger and in the end, the Feds had to take him. We were driving straight for a brick wall and Sonny never once took his foot off the gas." NOT FOR NOTHING is a huge reference to Sonny since it's Aldo Baglia taking revenge on Vinnie for betraying Sonny by not telling him about Patrice's planned hit. In THE SQUEEZE Michael Brod apologizes for not seeing past Vinnie's "Atlantic City reputation."
2. WHITE SUPREMACY: GOING HOME opens with an extended flashback sequence in which Sonny plays a prominent part and Vinnie talks about how he "turned friendship and loyalty into an obscene joke." Then Vinnie goes back to his mother's house and after a lot of pacing and hand wringing, he stops, says, "Get out of my head" and cranks his stereo up as though he's trying to block out memories. Considering none of the opening sequence shows Mel, Susan, or Roger, but all the references are about STEELGRAVE, it seems obvious to me just who Vinnie wants out of his head. And later in the same episode Daryl talks about Vinnie talking down a mob king pin. Again a reference to Sonny. Finally, while talking to Pete Vinnie says the neighbors all think he's Mafioso, something he wouldn't have been if Sonny hadn't had him made.
3. RAG TRADE: In 7TH AVENUE FREEZEOUT Johnny Coke Bottles asks Vinnie if he's that guy who was in Atlantic City "with that clown Steelgrave...the one that played a Christmas tree." IMO, Johnny was a clown himself, but nevertheless it's another mention for Sonny.
4. DEAD DOG: The references to Sonny in this arc are more indirect but they're still there because of the frequent mentions of Vinnie's high level *mob connections* which are a direct result of his time as Sonny's second in command. In DEAD DOG LIVES Vinnie tells Bobby Travis, "I have connections that reach far beyond this business." Of course we know that Vinnie means the OCB, but clearly he wants Bobby to think his connections are of the bent-nose variety. In IT COMES OUT HERE Johnny Medley says to Vinnie, "You're this big mobster right so I'm supposed to be afraid." Again this indicates the amount of notoriety Vinnie gained by being so closely associated with well known Mafia boss Sonny. The episode ends with Frank and Lifeguard telling Vinnie that US Attorney Walter Sawyer has provided Vinnie's cover file to Winston Newquay; a file which would state that Vinnie functioned as Sonny's underboss. In THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY Vinnie agains trades upon his mob reputation when he threatens to put out a contract on Winston. Not exactly an idle threat coming from someone the New Jersey papers described as Sonny's "triggerman and underworld enforcer." Congressional Aide Phillip Kenderson is arrested for obtaining Vinnie's classified files for Winston. Among other things, these files would have prominently mentioned one Sonny Steelgrave.
5. MAFIA: During A RIGHTFUL PLACE as Vinnie is riding around with Albert Cerrico he tells him how Paul Patrice tried to use him. "Patrice saw a guy stumble and he tried to grind him into the dirt by turning my friendship against this man. And Patrice now...he's buried in the pine barrens and nobody cares." Even without hearing his name, there's no question Vinnie is talking about Sonny. Later when Vinnie tries to force his way on to the Commission, Joey Grossett starts insulting Vinnie and calls him "a south Jersey junketeer." Last time I looked at a map, Atlantic City is in southern New Jersey. So again we have a reference to Sonny since AC was his fiefdom.
6: WASHINGTON DC: This is a really subtle one and easily missed. In DAY ONE as Vinnie is walking out to the balcony with Katherine he quickly remarks to Frank, "Breathe deep the gathering gloom." This is the first line to the epilogue of "Nights in White Satin" from NO ONE GETS OUT OF HERE ALIVE. Of course Vinnie is half joking when he says it, but it's interesting that the lyrics of that particular song are so vivid in his memory that he can quote them just like that.
7: LYNCHBORO: This one is clear since during Stem's suicide in HIS MASTER'S VOICE we see Vinnie flashing back to Sonny's similar death. And during Vinnie's confession to Father Pat in SANCTUARY Vinnie admits to haunted by the faces of every single man he's killed, "They all sit on my soul. They're like little soldiers and they have these mirrored faces and they're muttering existential crap at me. They say I am you and you are me." This is a clear reference to the theatre sequence at the end of NO ONE GETS OUT OF HERE ALIVE since Vinnie obviously felt responsible in large part for Sonny's death. The intense degree with which Vinnie identified with Sonny is also indicated by Vinnie using the term "mirrored faces". Sonny was also the only one of his opponents that he engaged in a lengthy philosophical debate.
Еще хочу добавить, что в той же серии из ответа Винни на вопрос священника: "Ты служитель закона?" очевидно, насколько Винни уже далек от того момента в "NO ONE GETS OUT OF HERE ALIVE", когда он говорил Санни "It's about law, man!" (и это очевидная отсылка к тому диалогу)
Плюс есть еще куча упоминаний Санни в сериях, не являющихся частями арок:
LAST RITES FOR LUCCI: вся серия пестрит упоминаниями о Санни, хотя его имя ни разу не называют. STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN: Фрэнк боится, что деньги, которые ему дал Винни, - это деньги Санни, о чем прямо спрашивает Винни. WHITE NOISE: тут даже говорить ничего не надо)) HOW WILL THEY REMEMBER ME?: напрямую Санни не упоминается, но в этой серии Винни внезапно узнает, что Санни в NO ONE GETS OUT OF HERE ALIVE был прав в своих подозрениях по поводу отца Винни) THE REUNION: все думают, что Винни гангстер, потому что работал на Санни. TO DIE IN BETTENDORF: во-первых, серия про Сидни) Во-вторых, МакПайк упоминает Санни.

Anime Iowa 2019: Friday
Hoo boy, I’ve been sitting on this review for too long. I got lazy, I suppose. But the problem of being lazy when reviewing cons is you start forgetting things, and this is one of the ways I like to remember.
Anyway, self-induced guilt trip aside, let’s dive in.
This was my first Anime Iowa but a return visit of sorts for @lechevaliermalfet - I say “of sorts” because he attended in the early years of the con and when it was in Coralville. For 2019, Anime Iowa was in Des Moines.
Just like when we attended Anime Midwest last year, @lechevaliermalfet and I drove to the con on Friday, rather than booking an additional night in the hotel. Well, he drove - I just goofed off on my phone in the car and snapped a photo for some of our friends as we passed by Bettendorf.
Tumblr media
It’s our twisted version of this:
youtube
We didn’t quite get started at the time we planned, due to some last-minute grocery shopping for at-con meals. Des Moines is about a 4-hour drive away, and while we didn’t figure we’d arrive right at the start of the con, I think we both initially expected to arrive before 1pm. Oh well.
Finding our hotel and the con itself was easier than I’d feared. We were staying at the Comfort Inn and were basically right off of the interstate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What I did find interesting was that we actually had our names checked against a guest list by a security guard in the hotel parking lot before we could park. When we did check in, we were greeted by a fellow nerd, who commented (based on our shirts) about “being among my people.”
We treated ourselves to a king room and it was very comfortable for the weekend, honestly.
Tumblr media
From the hotel, we walked to the convention center, which was only a few blocks away. I discovered that I could easily hit a few PokeStops during that walk.
Tumblr media
Once we got to the convention center, THAT is where things got confusing, as we weren’t certain of the appropriate entrance.
When we did find it, a helpful Anime Iowa staffer was seated outside, giving directions to the registration desk. They boiled down to “go to your right till you get to the escalators, take those upstairs, then turn left, go down the hall, turn right, down the hall, and right again...and then down the escalators. There are signs, don’t worry!”
...Yeah. Despite one set of doors being fairly close to where we walked in, they didn’t allow two-way traffic into the registration / official con merch / snack bar area. So if you were getting your badge, buying Anime Iowa swag, or just trying to nom some fries, you had to go upstairs and across the con center to go back downstairs where you wanted to be. It...really wasn’t that practical. I’m sorry. @lechevaliermalfet probably heard me whine about it for a good chunk of the weekend, as it screwed with my sense of direction - which is shaky at best when in new territory.
Registration itself was actually fairly quick and painless. We registered at con, since we actually weren’t certain until the week beforehand that my work schedule would work out (my job is regularly short-staffed). Our poor starving registration staffer thankfully got munchies delivered right as they handed us our badges.
After that, we just wandered for a bit, getting a feel for the convention center and the atmosphere. And I have to say, Anime Iowa is very welcoming. We made a few new con friends over the course of the weekend, actually. I hope we get to see them next year. And there were more fans who appeared to be in their 30s, like us, though plenty of younger fans were running around too, of course. Anime Iowa also constantly paid homage to older anime with the artwork of their mascot, Buu-Chan.
Tumblr media
Also, folks on staff clearly had an awesome playlist for the music going over the con center speakers whenever the con was open. I heard many beloved anime opening and ending themes, Disney tunes in Japanese, and more.
youtube
I know we browsed the dealer’s room off and on during the con and we did hit the AMV room at least once in between panels, but I can’t give quite the blow-by-blow I’ve managed in the past, partly because of how late I am on this review.
Tumblr media
@lechevaliermalfet thought it was beyond wrong that there was a Charlotte plushie there. I loved it but didn’t buy it.
Thankfully, I did screenshot the schedule, so at least I still can remember the panels we went to!
But as an aside, that was the other major organizational aspect of Anime Iowa that bothered me. The printed program listed the full panel info...but in alphabetical order instead of chronological and some panels weren’t listed. The missing listings didn’t bother me as much - that’s just sadly a hazard of having to do some last-minute shuffling after you’ve sent your order to the printer. But not having a chronological schedule that I could flip through meant I was constantly checking my phone for information - I took screenshots of the web schedule and referred to those or the posted schedules by the panel rooms to verify I was in the right place at the right time.
Tumblr media
VS
Tumblr media
Anyway, our first panel of the day was the Q&A with J. Michael Tatum. Now, I’m honestly not the best with remembering who voiced what, with a handful of exceptions if a character left an impression. So I couldn’t initially place characters with the name - but I didn’t mind. I learned early on, from when @shbumi and I were basically the only guests at a minor voice actor’s panel at Anime St. Louis way back when, that talent panels are always informative. And usually entertaining, though that can depend on the hour of the day and how caffeinated the guest is.
Tumblr media
Our second panel of the day was Greg Ayres’ Q&A panel. You would think we’d be bored of attending his events at cons now, seeing as how he’s almost always around at Anime Zap. But nope - and at Anime Iowa, in all of his panels, we were rewarded with some new stories we hadn’t heard before. And Ayres’ storytelling ability is part of why we love his panels.
Tumblr media
Our third panel of the night was Six Degrees of Shinji Ikari. It’s sad that this panel only attracted a small crowd, honestly. It relies heavily on audience participation and bullshitting abilities. And yes, it really is just using the “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” social game, only done with anime/game characters. But it was super entertaining - more so when the challengers weren’t familiar with both of the characters they were expected to link.
Tumblr media
The fourth and final panel was Greg Ayres’ 18+ panel. Some classic stories referencing Grindr and Jigglypuff, but also newer stories involving VAs farting in unfortunate circumstances and determining the question of “What do you do when you are in a bathroom with no TP/kleenex/towels/etc and need to wipe?”
Also, Greg Ayres’ doesn’t allow photo/video during his panel, but he was goofing off with his hair beforehand and I did snag a photo of that.
Tumblr media
After that, the con center closed down for the night. @lechevaliermalfet and I did get slightly turned around, since we followed the crowd exiting the building. The upside to that is that we learned that the Hyatt that was hosting late-night events was connected via skywalk, and just how far it was from our hotel. But that was all the exploring we felt up to for Friday, so that also ended our con for the day.

Josephine’s cryptic note says she wants to discuss an important legal matter with Brooke, who is an attorney, but Brooke knows that Mrs. Warrick has long been a client of a prestigious Atlanta law firm. Over a few meetings, the ailing Josephine spins a tale of old friendships, secrets, betrayal and a long-unsolved murder. She tells Brooke she is hiring her for two reasons: to protect her island and legacy from those who would despoil her land, and secondly, to help her make amends with the heirs of the long dead women who were her closest friends, the girls of The High Tide Club—so named because of their youthful skinny dipping escapades—Millie, Ruth and Varina. When Josephine dies with her secrets intact, Brooke is charged with contacting Josephine’s friends’ descendants and bringing them together on Talisa for a reunion of women who’ve actually never met.” Amazon The Glitch by Elisabeth Cohen “Shelley Stone, wife, mother, and CEO of the tech company Conch, is committed to living her most efficient life. She takes her ‘me time’ at 3:30 a.m. on the treadmill, power naps while waiting in line, schedules sex with her husband for when they are already changing clothes, and takes a men’s multivitamin because she refuses to participate in her own oppression. But when she meets a young woman also named Shelley Stone who has the same exact scar on her shoulder, Shelley has to wonder: Is she finally buckling under all the pressure?” IF YOU WANT SOMETHING THAT WILL TURN YOU ON… AmazonThe Pisces by Melissa Broder  “Lucy has been writing her dissertation on Sappho for nine years when she and her boyfriend break up in a dramatic flameout. After she bottoms out in Phoenix, her sister in Los Angeles insists Lucy dog-sit for the summer. Annika’s home is a gorgeous glass cube on Venice Beach, but Lucy can find little relief from her anxiety — not in the Greek chorus of women in her love addiction therapy group, not in her frequent Tinder excursions, not even in Dominic the foxhound’s easy affection. Everything changes when Lucy becomes entranced by an eerily attractive swimmer while sitting alone on the beach rocks one night. But when Lucy learns the truth about his identity, their relationship, and Lucy’s understanding of what love should look like, take a very unexpected turn. A masterful blend of vivid realism and giddy fantasy, pairing hilarious frankness with pulse-racing eroticism, THE PISCES is a story about falling in obsessive love with a merman: a figure of Sirenic fantasy whose very existence pushes Lucy to question everything she thought she knew about love, lust, and meaning in the one life we have.” Amazon Tell Me Lies by Carola Lovering “Lucy Albright is far from her Long Island upbringing when she arrives on the campus of her small California college, and happy to be hundreds of miles from her mother, whom she’s never forgiven for an act of betrayal in her early teen years. Quickly grasping at her fresh start, Lucy embraces college life and all it has to offer—new friends, wild parties, stimulating classes. And then she meets Stephen DeMarco. Charming. Attractive. Complicated. Devastating. Confident and cocksure, Stephen sees something in Lucy that no one else has, and she’s quickly seduced by this vision of herself, and the sense of possibility that his attention brings her. Meanwhile, Stephen is determined to forget an incident buried in his past that, if exposed, could ruin him, and his single-minded drive for success extends to winning, and keeping, Lucy’s heart. Lucy knows there’s something about Stephen that isn’t to be trusted. Stephen knows Lucy can’t tear herself away. And their addicting entanglement will have consequences they never could have imagined.” IF YOU WANT TO SIT ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT…  AmazonMr. Flood’s Last Resort by Jess Kidd  “Maud Drennan is a dedicated caregiver whose sunny disposition masks a deep sadness. A tragic childhood event left her haunted, in the company of a cast of prattling saints who pop in and out of her life like tourists. Other than visiting her agoraphobic neighbor, Maud keeps to herself, finding solace in her work and in her humble existence–until she meets Mr. Flood. Cathal Flood is a menace by all accounts. The lone occupant of a Gothic mansion crawling with feral cats, he has been waging war against his son’s attempts to put him into an old-age home and sent his last caretaker running for the madhouse. But Maud is this impossible man’s last chance: if she can help him get the house in order, he just might be able to stay. So the unlikely pair begins to cooperate, bonding over their shared love of Irish folktales and mutual dislike of Mr. Flood’s overbearing son. Still, shadows are growing in the cluttered corners of the mansion, hinting at buried family secrets, and reminding Maud that she doesn’t really know this man at all. When the forgotten case of a missing schoolgirl comes to light, she starts poking around, and a full-steam search for answers begins.” Amazon Princess by James Patterson and Rees Jones “When the head of the world’s foremost investigation agency receives at invitation to meet Princess Caroline, third in line to the British throne, he boards his Gulfstream jet and flies straight to London. The Princess needs Morgan’s skills, and his discretion. Sophie Edwards, a close friend of the Princess, has gone missing. She needs to be found before the media become aware of it. Morgan knows there is more to this case than he is being told.” IF YOU USUALLY PREFER MOVIES TO BOOKS… AmazonThe Favorite Sister by Jessica Knoll “When five hyper-successful women agree to appear on a reality series set in New York City called Goal Diggers, the producers never expect the season will end in murder… Brett’s the fan favorite. Tattooed and only twenty-seven, the meteoric success of her spin studio—and her recent engagement to her girlfriend—has made her the object of jealousy and vitriol from her castmates. Kelly, Brett’s older sister and business partner, is the most recent recruit, dismissed as a hanger-on by veteran cast. The golden child growing up, she defers to Brett now—a role which requires her to protect their shocking secret. Stephanie, the first black cast member and the oldest, is a successful bestselling author of erotic novels. There have long been whispers about her hot, non-working actor-husband and his wandering eye, but this season the focus is on the rift that has opened between her and Brett, former best friends—and resentment soon breeds contempt.” AmazonThe Cast by Danielle Steel “Kait Whittier has built her magazine column into a hugely respected read followed by fans across the country. She loves her work and adores her grown children, treasuring the time they spend together. But after two marriages, she prefers to avoid the complications and uncertainties of a new love. Then, after a chance meeting with Zack Winter, a television producer visiting Manhattan from Los Angeles, everything changes. Inspired by the true story of her own indomitable grandmother, Kait creates the storyline for a TV series. And when she shares her work with Zack, he is impressed and decides to make this his next big-budget project. Within weeks, Kait is plunged into a colorful world of actors and industry pros who will bring her vision to life. A cool, competent director. An eccentric young screenwriter. A world-famous actress coping with private tragedy. A reclusive grande dame from Hollywood’s Golden Age. A sizzling starlet whose ego outstrips her abilities. L.A.’s latest ‘bad boy’ actor, whose affairs are setting the city on fire. An unknown ingénue with outsized talent. And a rugged, legendary leading man. As secrets are shared, the cast becomes a second family for Kait. But in the midst of this charmed year, she is suddenly forced to confront the greatest challenge a mother could ever know. The strength of women—across generations and among friends, colleagues, and family—takes center stage in this irresistible novel, as all-too-real people find the courage to persevere in life’s drama of heartbreak and joy.” IF YOU WANT TO LEARN SOMETHING NEW…Amazon How To Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan “When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third. Thus began a singular adventure into various altered states of consciousness, along with a dive deep into both the latest brain science and the thriving underground community of psychedelic therapists. Pollan sifts the historical record to separate the truth about these mysterious drugs from the myths that have surrounded them since the 1960s, when a handful of psychedelic evangelists inadvertently catalyzed a powerful backlash against what was then a promising field of research.” AmazonThe Trials of Nina McCall by Scott W. Stern “In 1918, shortly after her eighteenth birthday, Nina McCall was told to report to the local health officer to be examined for sexually transmitted infections. Confused and humiliated, Nina did as she was told, and the health officer performed a hasty (and invasive) examination and quickly diagnosed her with gonorrhea. Though Nina insisted she could not possibly have an STI, she was coerced into committing herself to the Bay City Detention Hospital, a facility where she would spend almost three miserable months subjected to hard labor, exploitation, and painful injections of mercury. Nina McCall was one of many women unfairly imprisoned by the United States government throughout the twentieth century. Tens, probably hundreds, of thousands of women and girls were locked up–usually without due process–simply because officials suspected these women were prostitutes, carrying STIs, or just ‘promiscuous.’ This discriminatory program, dubbed the “American Plan,” lasted from the 1910s into the 1950s, implicating a number of luminaries, including Eleanor Roosevelt, John D. Rockefeller Jr., Earl Warren, and even Eliot Ness, while laying the foundation for the modern system of women’s prisons. In some places, vestiges of the Plan lingered into the 1960s and 1970s, and the laws that undergirded it remain on the books to this day.” IF SCIENCE FICTION IS MORE YOUR STYLE… AmazonMEM by Bethany C. Morrow “Set in the glittering art deco world of a century ago, MEM makes one slight alteration to history: a scientist in Montreal discovers a method allowing people to have their memories extracted from their minds, whole and complete. The Mems exist as mirror-images of their source — zombie-like creatures destined to experience that singular memory over and over, until they expire in the cavernous Vault where they are kept. And then there is Dolores Extract #1, the first Mem capable of creating her own memories. An ageless beauty shrouded in mystery, she is allowed to live on her own, and create her own existence, until one day she is summoned back to the Vault. What happens next is a gorgeously rendered, heart-breaking novel in the vein of Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go.” Amazon84K by Claire North  “The penalty for Dani Cumali’s murder: £84,000. Theo works in the Criminal Audit Office. He assesses each crime that crosses his desk and makes sure the correct debt to society is paid in full. These days, there’s no need to go to prison – provided that you can afford to pay the penalty for the crime you’ve committed. If you’re rich enough, you can get away with murder. But Dani’s murder is different. When Theo finds her lifeless body, and a hired killer standing over her and calmly calling the police to confess, he can’t let her death become just an entry on a balance sheet. Someone is responsible. And Theo is going to find them and make them pay.”  Read more: thoughtcatalog.com http://dailybuzznetwork.com/index.php/2018/06/11/the-best-books-to-read-during-the-last-week-of-may/

The 2018 boys’ state soccer tournament began Thursday at the Cownie Soccer Park. Winners will advance to Friday’s semifinals, guaranteeing a top-four finish.
Here’s how the games unfolded:
Class 3A
Iowa City West 2, Ankeny Centennial 1 (OT)
Exciting final 20-plus minutes that ended with the defending champs advancing. After more than 65 scoreless minutes, West’s Gada Ambo broke through the Jaguars’ defense to put the Trojans up 1-0 in the 67th.
Centennial’s Michael Brandt headed in the equalizer in the 78th minute to force extra time, where Micah Frisbie scored the game-winner to push the Trojans to 18-3. The Jaguars end the year at 15-5.
Ankeny 3, Cedar Rapids Prairie 0
A surprising result here, as the seventh-seeded Hawks upended Cedar Rapids Prairie with a flurry of goals in the final 20 minutes. Peter Gaspair opened the scoring barrage with a goal in the 67th minute to give Ankeny a 1-0 lead.
Kolby Raineri scored the final two in the final three minutes to give the Hawks an impressive victory over Prairie, who finishes the season 14-2 overall. Ankeny improves to 16-4, and advances to Friday’s semifinals.
Bettendorf 1, Iowa City High 0
Bettendorf advances to the 3A semifinals for the second year in a row thanks to a 67th minute goal from Dawson Gamble, who headed in a corner kick. The Bulldogs improve to 15-2, while City High’s season ends at 16-5.
Class 2A
Pella 2, Perry 1
Top-seeded Pella advanced behind two Ethan Poulter goals. The senior scored his first in the 28th minute to give the Dutch a 1-0 lead at the half, then scored again in the 50th minute, giving him 34 goals for the year.
But Perry would not go quietly, cutting the lead in half with less than three minutes to play. But the Dutch hung on to improve to 17-2. Perry’s season ends at 11-11.
Cedar Rapids Xavier 3, Dallas Center-Grimes 0
Xavier cruised to a win over Dallas Center-Grimes on Field 7. The Saints led 2-0 at the midway point thanks to goals from Justin Schneider and Andrija Mijatovic. Schneider scored his in the 15th minute, while Mijatovic netted one from close range in the 23rd.
In the second half, Mijatovic struck again, using some slick footwork to score in the 49th minute. The victory is Xavier’s 10th of the season. Dallas Center-Grimes’ season ends at 15-4.
Storm Lake 6, Hudson 0
Storm Lake asserted itself in its lopsided quarterfinal win over Hudson on Field 6. The Tornadoes led 3-0 after just nine minutes thanks to goals from Jose Martinez, Gerardo Rosiles and Andy Rodriguez.
In the second half, Kevin Duque got in on the action, scoring in the 61st minute. The Tornadoes added two more goals to improve to 17-0 this season. Hudson’s season ends at 14-5.
Marion 5, Newton 4
This was a wild one. Nine total goals from five different players help create the most exciting quarterfinal game of the Class 2A slate. It was 2-2 at the half, and 3-3 after Newton’s Zach Combs connected on a penalty kick in the 65th minute.
Then, in the 70th minute, Levi Murphy netted his 13th goal of the season to give Marion a 4-3 lead. Newton leveled the match for the third time when Matthew Yeager scored in the 89th minute, but Marion evaded overtime when Jaffer Murphy scored the game-winner 39 seconds later.
Marion, now 16-0, advances to the semifinals in its second-ever state tournament appearance. Newton’s season ends at 14-6.
Class 1A
Iowa City Regina 3, Treynor 0
A pair of Alec Wick goals gave the Regals, the defending state champions, a 2-0 lead after the first half. Wick, just a freshman, netted his first goal in the 16th minute, then scored again in the 21st.
Nick Pechous added a third goal in the 58th minute. Treynor, which averaged more than five goals a game this season, was shut out for the second time this season. Regina improves to 16-3. Treynor’s season ends at 13-6.
Gilbert 1, Assumption 0 (2OT)
A game filled with action and opportunities went scoreless for more than 90 minutes until Gilbert’s Jack Gustafson broke the tie with a goal in the second extra period. The victory pushed the Tigers to 14-7 overall. Assumption’s season ends at 12-9.
Williamsburg 2, Nevada 1
The second-seeded Raiders scored quickly in this one. Sophomore Matthew Cronquist slotted home the first goal in the seventh minute. But Nevada leveled the contest when freshman Jose Buenrrostro scored his 12th goal of the season in the 29th minute.
Williamsburg took the lead for good when Zach Litwiller found the back of the net in the 49th minute, pushing the Raiders to 14-3 overall and into the semifinals of their first-ever state-tournament appearance. Nevada’s season ends at 12-8.
Des Moines Christian 4, Iowa Mennonite 0
It was the Ben Webster show in Des Moines Christian’s quarterfinal matchup against state-tournament newbies Iowa Mennonite. The high-scoring senior notched a hat trick with goals in the fifth, 38th and 59th minutes, giving him 57 for the season.
Sandwiched between them was a Cody Smith goal in the 57th minute, as the Lions improve to 16-1 overall after easily dispatching Iowa Mennonite, whose season ends at 18-2.
