August 30: Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

(previous notes: Mission: Impossible III)

I bet the powers that be at the Mission: Impossible movie factory didn't lose any sleep over the stupid colon in the title that screws everything up. I mean, just look at that up there with the colon after my date, then the colon in the middle of the OG title, and then it's like, well, you can do whatever you want with punctuation but we're adding a subtitle after it now and you just have to deal with it. On posters and stuff it's just "Mission: Impossible" and then underneath those words they put "Ghost Protocol" so they don't have to deal with it. What a mess. I tell you it is a damn mess is what it is.

Anyway, we have arrived at the M:I movie that, more than any of the others, just really hit the spot for me when I saw it upon its original release. I saw it at the end of a frustrating and tiring work day and it was exactly what the doctor ordered. At some point in the middle I realized that I was enjoying it thoroughly without having to tolerate the kinds of flaws that were apparently part and parcel of this kind of movie. Maybe there were flaws that I just wasn't registering. We'll soon see.

Continuing the tradition of making very hip choices for the directing duties, here we have the live-action directorial debut of Brad Bird, who started off directing episodes of The Simpsons before moving on to no less than The Iron Giant and The Incredibles. Dude had two Oscars on his mantle by the time he showed up for this. Press play already!

Um Sweet Christ those opening shots look gook in 4K like HOO boy

Whoa, neat opening where Sawyer from Lost is chased off the top of a building in Budapest but his jacket deploys an air mattress right as he almost-hits, but then he's shot by Lea Seydoux in an alley, rat-a-tat-tat with the action here, like what is up

Simon Pegg is back, and he's being tricksy with the tech in a prison! He's opening cell doors and the prisoners are surprised and delighted with that twist! He plays them a jazz standard on the intercom and Ethan Hunt suavely emerges from one of the cells. Fun silly things ensue involving Ethan's rebellious and confident independent strategy and a small riot that seems kind of like a bar fight.

He has made a pal in the joint and he's breaking him out. Some kind of cool tech creates a really sweet vortex-y hole in the floor and they are swooped up by their helpers, it's fun.

We're introduced to Paula Patton who is a new team member, and then the credits roll, and they are spirited in a way that recalls the first movie, also showing real scenes from later in the movie.

Flashback to the thing that was happening with Sawyer shows how that botched operation, something about a file and a courier, got Sawyer killed because lots of bad guys were all over the place there. AR contact lens technology figures prominently, and that is a good idea (plus we totally might have those soon, right?).

0:18:16 - Once again we begin the movie without the leading lady from the previous one, but we're starting to get an explanation here. Or just a tease of one I guess.

And quickly we get a sneaky-style self-destructing message that sets up that Ethan has to disguise himself as a specific Russian and sneak into the actual Kremlin. This movie 100% gets what a Mission: Impossible movie is supposed to be.

This time, they aren't using fancy masks or voice shifter things, just costumes and a fake mustache. They comment about that in the dialogue but don't explain why.

0:24:52 - Dialogue mixed SO QUIET here I have no idea what SP just said. It seems like you're supposed to have heard it.

But that is quickly forgotten when they use the coolest spy gadget of them all - a screen that is placed in a corridor that makes the guy at the other end of the corridor think it’s the corridor, but it's a screen and SP & Ethan are hiding behind it and it is super super neato I love it

Then just when it's cool that that is going well, it's suddenly cool how NOT well it's going because someone is spying on their spycraft! The thing they were going to heist isn't there, and someone deliberately makes their comms thing be heard by the bad guys!

And THEN we see something we really didn't think we'd see and it is kind of mind blowing - Ethan escapes from the Kremlin with a very smooth quick-change of his disguise that we see him do in all one shot… but then the Kremlin totally explodes and it explodes all over Ethan as he's running away! It looks amazing!

Right after that there is some fun with subtitles - Ethan is in the hospital all damaged and concussed and stuff, and the news is talking about the obvious big story, and the subtitles are in Russian. At first I was like, "hey is my home theater tech busted?" but no, the subtitles become gradually more in English as Ethan starts to come out of it. Then we see with subtitles that Ethan is reading lips about the police people that want to be bad guys to Ethan.

After Ethan escapes, we shift to a wholesome-looking Russian family we haven't seen before. The scene is a nice little piece of drama about how the dad sees the Kremlin news and wants to get the family out of there, and very quickly that goes south and thugs have them all at gunpoint, it's nicely done

Ethan is being extracted by two new characters played by accomplished, Oscar-nominated actors Tom Wilkinson and Jeremy Renner… the conversation is dire and I don't want to type during it gahhh gah gah gah I am watching because holy shit this goes south too! TW informs Ethan that the DoD is going to frame him for blowing up the Kremlin and his only choice is to escape. He's telling him HOW to escape in a funny way, but they are attacked and it's visually very interesting and TW is headshot and they are in the water and it is such bad news for Ethan and his new colleague played by Mr. Renner, I probably typoed a lot during that because it was so hard to look away.

So Ethan is on the hook for the terrorist attack of the century and he's being chased by a little battalion of thugs who just shot that important spy boss, and he's in Russia. It is very not good for Ethan.

He's with JR and JR is playing a different character for him. He's a bookish analyst guy who feels very out of place in action-land.

We're learning about the main bad guy, Hendricks, who was the guy that screwed everything up in the Kremlin. He's a super-smart theoretical physicist or something who has big, well-thought-out ideas about destroying the world with nukes, and he took nuke codes from the Kremlin. So things are just really really hairy and it's effective storytelling is what I'm saying.

Also effective is that they met up with SP and PP on a neat secret train car thing that is well appointed with spy gear

And VERY VERY EFFECTIVE is what happens next, which is a series of establishing shots of Dubai which KILL ON MY TV. I am glad I have a 4K panel, kids. This begins what I recall as being an extended sequence of sweet-ass suspense. Ethan has to break into a server room by climbing the outside of the 130th floor of the Burj Khalifa using glove-gadget tech that will hopefully work. There is at least some actual Tom Cruise clinging to the side of that building. It's so cool looking. And to make matters worse, a dust storm approaches! Or should I say "to make matters even cooler looking". Yes I should. Please read that part.

Paula Patton's character seems underdeveloped so far, especially compared to her teammates Simon Pegg and Jeremy Renner.

Jeez you guys, if you like suspenseful action scenes about barely surviving climbing a skyscraper this movie is for you.

1:05:34 - In the middle of a tense conversation we see that they were using the maskmaker but it wasn't working. They just don't want us to have mask fun in this movie. They hate mask fun. Why does Brad Bird hate mask fun.

Oh then this scene which is neat - bad guys are meeting with LS… but Ethan and JR are taking their place, and PP is taking LS's place for the real bad guys one floor down. The movie explains it better than me, but it is pretty exciting, the two meetings happening at the same time with opposite trickery.

Hah, SP does a sweet fake-hand trick to get the diamonds from the bad guys so he can get them to Ethan and JN, and JN is doing the thing where he uses the contact lens tech… gosh why are you even reading this, just watch the movie. I really like the tricksy espionage.

It all falls apart because LS spots the contact lens in JR's eye. The plot is moving along in a way that, I'm once again noticing, would normally require more half-assed-ness. It's just a solid spy plot. Which probably makes these notes more boring. Poor you.

LS dies by getting kicked out of the open window of the Burj Khalifa with a brewing sandstorm in the background! Neat looking!

And then a thing where Ethan is in a thick dust cloud and he's tracking the important paper thing with his tracker device, and it starts moving quickly at him and we realize just as it's too late that it's in a car that's gonna run him over! Then that mechanic gets used in a car chase in a dust storm, which we don't see very often outside a Mad Max movie, and that climaxes in a really cool looking collision, followed by the reveal that one of the nuclear code bad guys was Hendricks in a supermask. So we DO like mask fun after all! Except why do we care that it was Hendricks?

A scene where JR is confronted for maybe being a double-crosser has a beautifully choreographed gun-get-grabbity-grab thing that was probably super fun for the actors.

1:27:05 - JR tells a story that at first we think is that family we saw briefly almost scramming, but no, he's talking about Ethan, and what seems to be a story about Ethan's wife (Julia from the last movie) getting killed in Croatia, and Ethan killing six Serbians for revenge, and that's why he was in prison in the beginning? It's still a little mysterious and kind of complicated. It doesn't quite fit with what we think we know.

Dubai imagery is pretty. I have been to Dubai. I am standing by for your marriage proposals now.

I didn't really follow how we got to this point, but Ethan went for a walk and met with some underworld Dubai person and made a deal the ended up with a huge cache of spy gear and a private plane to India. I went to India like right after Dubai. I have my own car and a job kind of so you might need to calm your hormones at this point.

A probing exchange with PP establishes that indeed Ethan's story is that he killed the men who killed his wife. Doesn't really seem legit, though. There's more to the story, clearly.

One of the tech things they play with on the plane is the most magic-seeming one. It is a suit that looks like tight chain-mail, and it floats over a cart, like a magic carpet that you wear.

We're introduced to Brij Nath, whose name I had to look up so I could tell you how it is spelled. He has an access code that they need, which seems like they just kind of simplified the situation, and he's one of those only-kinda-bad bad guys that's really just a pawn, for our heroes as well as for these storytellers.

The wearable magic carpet gadget is fun and funny! SP has to remote control JR wearing the floaty-suit and JR is trying not to freak out too badly, and maybe on purpose it recalls the scene from the first movie where Tom Cruise hovers parallel to the floor.

Hendricks is now in a secret room in the place where they all are, and he has a bad-guy briefcase computer and orders some subordinates to do something with a virus, and I don't actually understand what's really happening but am I to believe that Ethan et al are thwarting literal nuclear terrorism here in Mumbai? Right here at this pleasant party at the palace of an only kinda-bad bad guy?

1:48:30 - Ha, the climax of the wearable magic carpet thing involves JR barely surviving by doing an acrobatic stunt that seems oddly intuitive and satisfying. You'll just have to watch the movie to know what I mean.

The spy-tech car they have is rad.

They fail to prevent the launch of a nuclear missile! We see it come out of the sub and start missiling toward its destination which we have learned is California! Hendricks mutters things about how that should get the ball rolling making world powers hate each other and nuke each other and may there be peace on Earth, he also, yes, says that.

A chase on foot has Ethan and Hendricks suddenly brawling on an exotically elegant robotic parking ramp. Platforms move around mechanically and transfer unmanned cars to different areas, and it is against that video gamey backdrop that Ethan and Hendricks struggle to get that sinister suitcase which is all bouncing around that environment. Unexpectedly, Ethan's hope of grabbing it is thwarted by Hendricks suicide-jumping down several stories! We see it! He definitely does that! Ethan drives a car off a thing to follow him, plummeting down hood-first, and the airbag saves him! He gets the briefcase and barely saves the day in time!

Again a denouement making it very clear that everything is really shockingly okay and tidied up. Even the thing with Ethan revenge-killing Serbians and the thing with his wife is cleaned way up, but with an elegance and sweetness that elevates this movie above the others. She's not dead after all, just fake-dead for her protection. And they're only where they are in Seattle so he can glimpse her lovingly across a marina.

So! I feel strongly that this is the best Mission: Impossible movie! It is an extraordinarily deftly-constructed spy thriller! It's got all the funnest types of things that are in the other movies, and other fun spy thrillers, but with so much less garbage! They did a great job and they should be proud.

Another smog filled day. The city is bustling and everyone is moving quickly. It's the 90's and the mob is everywhere.

There were several real different types of mobs, but the most well known were the monster mobs. They strike terror in the hearts of every civilian in the city of ebbot. The Dremurr family commands many of the smaller groups. They couldn't hope to get out of their powerful grasp as they were Boss Monsters and strong underlings.

One branch is lead by the former wife of the Don Dremurr, Miss Toriel. She moved to the outskirts of the city and I to more of a town like area. It's less likely to have vist paid by any of the main members. Which why she picked it in the first place.

Ever since the incident a few years ago, she hadn't been so cheery as she use to. Losing both children to a turf war drained her. They weren't suppose to be anywhere near the spot yet there they were, in the middle of it all. Coming home one day to find your husband with a remorseful expression and being grief stricken at the news of your children no longer playfully chasing each other ever again.

She pauses her revelry to stop a sob from exiting her. Her tea grew cold as it became abandoned the more she drew into her thoughts. Over the years of divorcing the monster she use to love to losing more children she sheltered by herself. She just wants to be a mother, is that to much to ask for? Is she not fit to be a mother? Has she done something so wrong that she can not love children like a proper mother? Is she cursed? Bad luck? Coincidence? Perhaps there is no God? Or perhaps there is and they forbid her from having children?

She sits in her rocking chair as she dully looks out her window, waiting for nothing. She just wants her days to pass by now. She would be surprised if anything happened since the last time there was a child in her home.

The humans became familiar to with her and understood she simply wanted to be a mother. They had sympathy for her as witnessed her lose children many times. They know she loved them and did her best to protect them, but you can't stop illnesses sometime and sometimes an injury gets worse when you don't tell anyone.

One day, as usual, she looks out her window. She glances at her cup of tea, it was empty. With a sigh, she stands to make another cup. Looking through her cabinets, to find that she ran out of her favorite type of tea.

She frowned and decided to go out and buy some more and maybe finally empty the room she can't go in without crying.

She has her groceries and started leaving the store when she hear a scream. She turns her head to see some panicked humans coming to her.

"Miss Toriel, please help! There has been a crush. Please!"

"Oh no, where did it happen?"

The humans lead her to the crash site, two cars have had a nasty collision. Many humans and monsters trying to douse the flames.

"Is anyone still alive, how many casualties?"

"Three adults so far as we know, but there's something wrong."

"We found a.... babies blanket. But, we haven't seen a baby anywhere....."

Toriel grew horrified and frantic. Not another one! She will not lose another child, not again!

"Search the woods, the river! Please, baby humans can't swim! We don't have much time!"

It's been some time since they started looking and every second lost the more danger the child is in. From what was gathered at the crash site, the adults were an old couple and a single mother. The child still hasn't turned up yet and they were losing hope. Most have left, only Toriel and a few left looking.

Toriel wanted to tear up, but she didn't give up even if she was the last one left looking. A human officer said she should go home and they can look again in the morning.

"But the child will-"

"Miss. Too much time has passed....I don't.... please. I don't want to say it-"

"Then don't. You can go home if you want, but I am going to keep searching. I won't give up on that small.... helpless, hurt child."

She turns to keep looking and the officer keeps looking with her. That's when, they finally found the child. They were safely tucked a way in cushioned carriage. The officer, alerted Toriel and they headed to the small clinic they had in their tiny town.

"Now, I know you won't leave the child....so I am letting you stay here, but if we find anyone related to them..."

"I know....I just.... I couldn't let another child down when I could protect them, you know?"

The human officer nodded, knowing her story of fostering children.

"Before I go, I must ask... do you think you want to.... take care of this one if...."

"I.... am afraid to answer."

"The child is strong enough to pull through. That being said, we don't know much more with our limited technology."

"You're Miss Dremurr, correct?"

"Toriel."

"Miss Toriel, your magic.... is it the kind that heals?"

"I am a Boss Monster, so healing IS one of them. Monsters have many types. Do you want me to look over for an internal injuries?"

"Yes, that's what we were hoping."

As much as it pained her to see the eight month old in such a fragile state, she did what she was asked.

"I've mended small injuries to the child's brain. I do believe, it will take longer for the child to be able to speak."

"I've looked into the accident and the mother was the only family on the child. It seems the family kicked the mother out for whatever reason, Miss Toriel, remember that question I asked you before? Do you think you can take care of this child? If not you, they will be sent to an orphanage."

She thought and worried her self for a moment, before looking at the child and decided right then.

"I would love take care of the child."

"From the birth certificate, the child's name is Frisk."

Toriel smiled for the first time in years.

"Frisk, what a lovely."

Chapter 19

Summary: To the outside world, nothing should connect shy girl Angel Monroe and popular boy Xavier Hazelwood. But that isn't entirely true. They both hold secrets. Behind both of them lie 2 separate wolf packs. Xavier is well on his way to Alpha status and running the pack. Angel is not a wolf but instead the last healer in the world. When the realization comes forward that they are connected by destiny, will they decide to fulfill it? Is their connection predetermined by fate or will they choose their hearts? Lives and packs cross and mingle while romance and conflict brews. The story of 2 opposite souls on a collision path. Will destiny win out? Even the most innocent face, has the darkest secrets.

Gosh, my head hurts. I take my time opening my eyes. I make eye contact with my bedside table. Am I back home in my room? I look down to see my blanket is draped over me. Yup, definitely home. I try to sit up but only end up lying back from my dizziness and headache. I groan and struggle to get back up. Then I hear, “She’s up” through the door from the hallway. Then a rush of men enter my room. My brother, Trevor, and Xavier. All three men are intimidating with their tall figures.

“Hey, kiddo. How are you feeling?” My brother says as he sits down with me.

“Tired, but I am okay. What happened? I just remember we were walking to the car…” I mumble.

“You passed out again. We should have waited for tomorrow. You need to be more careful,” my brother says.

“I’m sorry. I just wanted to help.” I say meekly. I really just wanted to help the people who seem to be helping and protecting me all the time. I thought this could my way of protecting the pack. A silly thought I guess.

“This has happened before?” Xavier interrupts my train of thought. I can only nod. I am still ashamed of been scolded in front of Trevor and Xavier.

Luckily, Eric elaborates on my condition with the group. “Angel might have these amazing abilities, but she is limited sometimes. It’s like working out. The more and more she does it without the proper nutrition or rest, the more likely she is to pass out. You’re not conditioning yourself anymore. You need to get back to practicing.”

I nod and agree with his statement. I used to be really productive. I would spend my hours playing with each element. Sometimes I would use both my air and water elements to levitate water over my brother and then I would pour it all over him. Then I would run away, leaving an upset Eric. He played along when we were kids. I was a kid when he was a teenager. He loved to chase me around the woods in wolf form. We’d laugh and play, but father would get really worried about playing publicly. And angry at Eric for encouraging my actions. My father was strict about my public appearances. He just wanted to protect me and keep me safe from the “evil people” he used to call them. It was an easy way to comprehend the situation as a child. At a young age, my father made me work with my powers and he would give me a schedule to follow, but now I have been slacking. It has been hard to keep up with senior year, my new work with Trevor, and Xavier. He is a handful but does my make life interesting.

“Let me grab your dinner. You need to eat to get your sugars back to normal,” Trevor says and exits my room with my brother.

“Are you sure you are feeling okay? Remember you can tell me. No more lying. You don’t have to lie to please me or anyone.” Xavier says, replacing Eric’s seat.

I am grateful to have someone like Xavier. “I am fine. Truly. I just overworked myself. Maybe next time I should have lunch first. I promise for once I’m fine.” He still doesn’t believe me. He crosses his arms and still maintains his concerned face. “I mean it.” I smile to break his worries. Then something clicked in my head. “Oh no. I am so sorry. I didn’t help with your homework. Oh my gosh. Let me help you. You helped me so much today. It’s the least I could do.” I try to get up from my bed. How could I have forgotten the main reason why he was here? I have been selfish for worrying about myself and my problems. I totally forgot about Xavier’s homework. He was so kind to help, I should have done the same.

“Angel wait...wait..” Xavier uses his soft hands to gently push me back down. “I lied.”

I stop moving and sit upright, waiting for him to continue. “What?” I give him my full attention.

“I lied about the homework. I didn’t have any homework. I actually never needed tutoring. I just made that up. I am a straight-A student with a 4.0 GPA like you. I just made an excuse so I could spend more time with you.” He says and hangs his head low for lying. Maybe embarrassment? Why is he embarrassed? He is the most confident person I know. I am used to the popular, and outgoing Xavier. Where he attracts everyone’s attention. Where both boys and girls drool over him. He just naturally brings everyone together with his perfect smile. But I think an embarrassed Xavier is my favorite type.

Then he asks, “Are you mad? You are...ok. I am going to go before you burn me too. It’s late.”

I almost laugh but don’t. I just gave him a smile. “No, I am not mad. But thank you for telling me the truth.” He lets go of the breath that he seemed to have been holding. “It is late. You don’t want to ride in the dark.” The sun is starting to set as I look out of my french windows. “I will walk you out.”

We stand outside next to his bike. “Are you sure you can ride by yourself safely?” I ask, half-joking.

“Yes, I will be fine. But you need to go and get food in your system. I want to see you back to normal by tomorrow.”

I nod until he is satisfied. “Thank you again for today. You really helped. I probably wouldn’t have figured it out without you.”

“No, you would have. You’re smart. But I’ll gladly take credit.” He smiles that bright smile.

“It’s still kind of odd to perform magic in front of you...well in front of anyone.” I hold my arms together as if I am avoiding a chill in the air.

“I am sure it is when you have been hiding it for your whole life. I am glad we can share this. I am glad you can share something special like that with me. I have never seen anything like that. I guess I never thought about how powerful you really are. I wish I could do what you do. You should be proud of yourself. You are special. I just hope you realize it too.” He rides away leaving me speechless. I gather my wits and stop him before the gates open.

I run up to him. I don’t know what to do or say. How do you react to compliments? I just say, “Thank you and you don’t have to lie or make excuses if you just want to spend time together.” After that, I run back inside letting him go for the day. Maybe leaving him speechless too.

It’s funny that he wants to be like me. But I always want to be like him. Yes, to be confident but to be like them, a wolf. To be part of a pack, to be part of a group cause if you are a part of a group then you are never alone. If I was a wolf, then I wouldn’t have to deal with secrets or endangering my family. If I was a wolf I could be “normal.”

The next day in the library I was trapped between two twins who needed answers. At the end of the day, I was strolling around to find a new book to read. For everyone else, it was lunchtime. Some teens were using their lunchtime to study or like me avoiding our high school cafeteria. I personally would like to enjoy my lunch with a book. But while I am going through the fiction section, Brandon and Jordan used their lunchtime to trap me and have been waiting patiently for answers. I stand in front of them with two books in hand and my bag over my shoulders.

“Hi, guys.” I greet them with a smile. “I am sure you guys are wondering about what happened on Monday,” I whisper and bring them closer so no one can hear our conversation. We ended up at the last row of books and away from the public. “I just want to say sorry. I have been lying to you guys. After I am done I need you guys to also lie to your family and to your pack. Including your Alpha. Xavier…”

“Xavier told us.” Jordan interrupts me. It catches me off guard. My eyes widen and my jaw opens in shock. But within seconds, I collect myself.

“He told you guys what exactly?” I say louder than what is recommended in a library.

“That you have healing abilities. And in his words, you are like Avatar. To be able to control the four elements… It runs in the family…Your mother died because of it…The attack at your house… The last living of your kind…”

As they continue and continue my ears get muffled. I am not sure if I am angry or in shock that Xavier told them everything. All of that was private and personal. My secret to share with others. He told them everything. I don’t believe what I am hearing. Why would he do this? He knows, or I thought he knew, never to share my story. He didn’t even tell me that he mentioned it to the twins. My eyes moved between the twin as they continue to talk about my story. They sound like it’s their story rather than mine. My lip starts to quiver from the pain of betrayal.

“We promise not to tell a soul. Xavier made that very clear. We will carry your secret with care.” Jordan says. “Are you ok?” I think they finally notice my lack of communication. But all I can think is Xavier is going to hear it from me.

“Where is he? Is he still here?” I ask. I am not sure if he left for the day or he is like me and stayed after finishing our classes. He enjoys our high school cafeteria, a social gathering for every human being in the school. A panic attack waiting to happen for me. He loves to absorb the positive fame of being a handsome god. Any girl would fall for his sharp jawline, always clean and gelled hair, and his charming smile. But at this moment I can’t fall for his charm.

“He is still here. He wouldn’t leave without you knowing.” Brandon says as all three of us walk out of the library.

“Where is he?” I ask.

“He should be near the athletic building. I am not sure,” Jordan responds.

“I need to talk to him. I’ll see you guys later.” I turn to leave but realize I forgot to mention something. “Thank you. For keeping it a secret. I am sorry for the inconvenience.” I let go of my anger for a moment. It’s not the twins' fault. “Thank you,” is all I could say and hug both of them in each arm.

I make my way to find Xavier but he is nowhere to be seen. I check all the gyms, but he is not here. I can’t go into the locker rooms for obvious reasons. I honestly think he left for the day. While walking around my temper dies down. I had a plan that when I saw him I was going to give it to him. Then again if I start to yell I might set another tree on fire. On the upside, I can fix it. I try to laugh at my own mistakes to calm myself. A walk to cool off was a good call but I still need to talk to him. Why did he do that? I walk past the band room and you can hear the instruments dance throughout the room. The band kids sometimes leave the door open so others can hear them. I like to walk past them it is fun to hear the new arrangements they have been working on. But their song soon ends and a bunch of students leave the class. I hear a couple of voices in the room. The door widens and I finally find him. My anger comes back but once again, but disappears quickly.

Why is he in the band room? I lean on the wall and hide behind the door. I just hear, “Thanks again Josh”

“No problem. Are you coming to get lunch?”

“Nah, I think I am going to practice a little more.”

“Ok but clean up after yourself and it’s free to use but only during lunchtime.”

“Ya ya ya I know the rules. See you later.”

“Bye.” Josh exits the room and I pretend to read something on the new board so I don’t look like a stalker.

I wait until he is gone. I am about to step inside when I hear a gentle guitar breath. The string pluck echoes inside the room. I peek through and see Xavier sitting down alone with a guitar. His back is facing me. I don’t think he notices my entrance. He is too lost in his craft. My frown change to a smile. I never knew he could play. I guess I still don’t know a lot about him. The music was light and fun. It reminds me of something. Who’s the original artist?

Before I internally debate any further he stops playing and says, “I know you are there.” He turns around to find me embarrassed.

“How did you know?” I mumble.

“You’re my mate I can sense you from miles away,” he says. Then he must have heard me from outside.

“Right.” I acknowledge. It’s still weird to hear it from him.

“What are you doing here?” He asks.

“I was about to ask you the same.” He stands up to walk towards me. “I was looking for you.”

“Me? I feel so honored,” he jokes.

“You shouldn’t be. I am upset with you.” I change my mood to serious and focus on the mission.

“What did I do?” He puts the guitar down on the floor gently.

“You told the twins about my secrets, about my life, about my mom. How could you?” I fire myself up again.

“I'm sorry I didn’t think it was a big deal if they already saw.” He tries to comfort me but I push on. I need to finish my rant.

“Exactly you didn’t think. You should have told me that you told the twins. I had to find out from Jordan and Brandon. What if they didn’t keep my secret and ran with the information? What then? That was private information.” I raise my voice to a higher volume.

“They wouldn’t do that. I made sure they won’t say anything.” He replies back looking down at me.

“Xavier those things I said to you the night in my cottage, that was personal information especially about my mom. I trusted you. Only you. I only told you because I trusted you to keep it. I have never told anyone before who isn’t my family.” As I get more frustrated I can feel my body boil and so does the water dispenser. It boils so much that the top pops off and spills all the water on the hard wooden floors.

“Angel!” Xavier says and pulls me far away from the surprise attack. The loud pop caught both of us off guard.

“Dang it.” I sigh and let go of my anger. It is not helping the situation. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to.” I apologize. He’s scared. Scared of me. The gallon of water travels around us causing a mess. “I’m so sorry.”

“It’s ok. I’m ok. Just relax. Breathe.” He notices my flustered face. He pulls me closer so my head is resting on his chest. The sound of his heartbeat calms me down “The instruments!” The water was traveling at a rapid speed. It was about to destroy the instruments.

I pull away from Xavier and shift my hand quickly to pause the water from moving. Xavier lets go a sigh of relief. I crunch my knuckles to boil and dissolve the water to disappear. The room was back to a dry floor.

“All better?” I question with Xavier by my side again. I put the now empty jug back on top of the dispenser. “I’m sorry. It just happens sometimes. I didn’t mean to yell and cause all that.” I look down.

“No, it was my fault. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have told the twins without your permission. I feel like shit now. I am sorry. Please forgive me. You’re right. It wasn’t my place to say anything. I promise you they won’t say a thing and I will never do anything behind your back. Especially when it involves you.” He tries to level his head with mine to make eye contact.

I don't know what to think. A part of me is still upset. Mostly that he overshared to his friends. But that’s what friends are there for right? Does he tell them everything we do or talk about? I know the twins had their suspicions, but it was for me to tell, not Xavier. Is he just apologizing because he is scared of me? Scared that I will explode again? He is lying and just saying what I want to hear to calm down?

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to.” I point at the empty water dispenser. The only words that seem to continue to repeat out of my mouth.

“It’s okay. I thought it was pretty cool. It’s not every day you see that.” He laughed to break the ice. Which does help. “What can I do for you to forgive me?” He goes back to the main problem and not my insecure powers.

“Umm…” I start to think and look around. “Tell me a secret. Like how I never knew you played guitar.” I change the subject and trust Xavier that he truly cares and is not scared of me.

“I was wondering if you were ever going to ask.” He laughs and continues. “I guess like you, I need a creative outlet. It’s a secret no one knows. Not even my parents. So I would like to keep it that way. Music has been so helpful in my life. So I want to start learning for myself and be apart of the music. So of the band kids help me and they let me be in here sometimes.”

“Play me something,” I demand.

“No. No. No. I’m not that good and it’s too embarrassing.”

“Please. If you do, then I will forgive you for telling the twins about my secret.” I play with his weakness.

“Damn it. Fine.” He pulls up two chairs for us. He sits with the guitar in his lap and starts strumming. “You can’t tell anyone. Okay?” I nod in excitement “This is for you.”

After he strums a few chords, my jaw opens when he starts singing.

“Oh yeah tell you somethin’

I think you’ll understand

When I say that somethin’

I want to hold your hand…

Oh please say to me

You’ll let me be your man…

And when I touch you

I feel happy inside

It’s such a feelin’ that my love

I can’t hide…”

He surprised me and I am speechless. Oh my god, he can really and beautifully sing. I would never have pictured him singing an old Beatles song. He is able to surprise me each time and after this, I think I am able to forgive him. He is smooth, I can’t deny that. But it is a shame that he doesn’t feel comfortable to perform for his family or anyone else. Then again I am happy I am the only one who has listened to his voice. I am selfish enough to keep this moment just between us forever. I spend the rest of my day with Xaiver’s hypnotizing voice stuck in my head. It left a calming and cheerful stamp on my heart. The carefree rhythm matches Xavier’s personality. It makes the music that much more enjoyable.

Epitome of Eighteen Histories 18: Kinomiya Kazane Episode

This is my translation for the last episode in the Epitome of Eighteen Histories extras! It was a lot of fun working on this, especially since Kinomiya Kazane is a really special character to me.

I translated this from a Chinese translation, which translated it from the original Japanese, so um, translation-ception? ;w;

Maybe her brother had already stepped knee-deep into this world long ago.

Whether it was of his own will, or from the headless rider manipulating his heart.

Maybe if she took another step, she would also end on “the other side”. Maybe she would never be able to return to her past self.

Or maybe, precisely because she was afraid of this, she had always hesitated approaching her brother. This deeply buried thought began to surface in the jumbled sea of ideas.

At this point I was a bit suspicious and the amount seemed very high for what I thought was not a lot of damage but at the same time he said that he either wanted to do it like that or through the insurance and I really didn't want to loose my no-claims discount as insurance for young male drivers is very high without the no-claims. In the end I decided to pay him, not without a certain bitterness owing to the fact that he was pressuring me for an immediate decision, which also made me suspicious. Having sent the cheque for 400, he kept up communications initially and let me know that he'd received it. He said that he would send me a copy of the receipt from the garage for my records but once he received the cheque I never heard back and now cannot get a reply. Bit long-winded for a question but that's the background story, my question is two-fold: 1. Can I do anything about it? It's more the principle than the money that bothers me, I know that I caused damage to his car but I now suspect it wasn't as much as he claimed. 2. Does 400 sound like too much or should I stop worrying about it? But when she got out, she realized there is damage all along the side, from front to back, including the mirror missing and a serious dent on the front passenger (the front is peeled back, exposing the hinge mechanism. Rain now gets in through the top as the seal is broken as well. She is insured and believes she has coverage but she's scared cause she left the scene. This was 3 weeks ago - there has been no follow up. She hasn't called the police but kept an eye out for whether or not it was reported and she needed to come forward. It was in a pretty run down part of town. Anyway - I don't know what to tell her so i'm coming here - can she report this to insurance and admit that she swiped a bus and didn't stop?
