Looking for a story…

I know it’s a long shot but does anybody know where I could find the Jared Followill fanfiction called “Pirate Smile”? I discovered it years ago (like maybe in 2010) on Quizilla and then later on Mibba. It was a beyond brilliant story just like the one by @ownisyoulove-blog.

It appears as though Mibba no longer works which is a real shame. Quizilla has obviously been gone for a long time too. And maybe the Kings of Leon fanfiction community hasn’t had much activity since about 2013 (I could be wrong though as I haven’t really checked into it since about then or so).

Many groups tend to destroy themselves thanks to the fame they gain too quickly, which can be seen in their music then. I mean, I'm not surprised Kings Of Leon were close to their destruction, because their music follows the archetype of what rock supposes to be. I hear a lot of influences in their sound, though they put their own swagger – the latter might be a quality many modern musicians understand as the secret ingredient to reach their idols, but I digress – and they do the idiom that tries to be dangerous. This might be my problem with them, i.e. they are a facsimile, which shouldn't be seen as a bad thing. However, they don't play with the notion, you notice they consider themselves to be the real deal. To be honest, many of their peers are similar in their line of thinking.

I know that picture and have to laugh every time the more "inexperienced" fans just point out Alex and Alexa like the other two aren't famous or anything. lmao

This is also one of the reasons why I think Alex is still stepping by Johanna's house when they tour Nashville. I think they still have contact.

A Visceral Experience

After a sensational 2016 album, WALLS, the long awaited sequel to it, five years later, When You See Yourself, Kings of Leon comes swinging. WALLS is a fantastic album, full of great songs where the instruments play the melodrama to the groove digging songwriting in tracks like Around the World and Muchacho. In When You See Yourself, Kings of Leon returns with an exceptionally stirring music. 

I first caught wind of Kings of Leon in 2011 with their song Use Somebody from their album Only by the Night. It was a gut churning song with an uplifting guitar work. At first I thought they sounded a lot like the Killers, with Matthew Followill inducing the same hair-raising guitar prowess as Dave Keuning. After that thought settled, and I got the chance to listen to their other songs, I knew they had a sound of their own. A sound composed of a very masterful songwriting with stark and vivid monochromatic instrument compositions that have a lot of swagger.

When You See Yourself comes with all of that swagger. They move through each track with boldness and confidence. The first track, where the album takes its name, When You See Yourself, Are You Far Away, introduces you to the album with high notes from the guitar that induces an imagery of a man cruising down a three-lane highway with the windows down. It is a song that derepresses self-reflection and meditation and leaves you with a thought maybe I am that free spirit of the highway and the smell of diesel and gasoline. The second track, the Bandit, has instrument compositions and vocals that haunt you like a ghost hovering above your shoulder behind you. It invokes a spiritedness in you that has been left latent. The third track, 100,000 People drops down a pitch in tone and invites you into their enthralling sound. 

My favourite song from the album is Claire & Eddie. The songwriting is sweet tasting and melancholic. It gives me the impression of a shortsighted youth gone wrong. The Followill brothers and cousin move with slow groove through the track, and Caleb’s vocal tells the story like a siren in the sea. It is the best track on the album and one of the band’s best songwriting. 

Songs like Stormy Weather, Golden Restless Age, Time in Disguise, and Supermarket have this reoccuring mesmerising guitar from Matthew, bass from Jared, and drums from Nathan. And Caleb takes us through each track like a domineering voice as the narrator of the stories. Overall, the album is breathtaking and as I listen through the album, it raises the hair on my skin and leaves me with goosebumps. When You See Yourself is an incredible album and a visceral experience left to behold.
