Masbate City is a former colonial port that had cattle stockyards near its docks until the 1970s. Its rodeo arena sits next to a fairground where fans mill around in denim, flannel and cowboy hats.
Vendors barbecue beef and pork over smoky grills under colorful tents. There’s line dancing, too, and a honky-tonk number written for the occasion.
“Row-dee-oh Masbateño,” the singer croons.

One of the things that I like the most in life is traveling to different parts of the Philippines.
The photo shows the southernmost tip of Ticao Island, Masbate. I passed by this place while on a noisy boat ride from Masbate City to Bulan, Sorsogon.

Artifacts of the Sa Huỳnh culture. This culture originated in modern-day Vietnam and flourished between 1,000 BC and 200 AD. Due to early trade networks, the Sa Huỳnh culture had spread across Taiwan and Southeast Asia.
On the trade network, according to Wikipedia:
The Sa Huỳnh culture showed evidence of an extensive trade network that existed between 500 BC to AD 1500, known as the Sa Huynh-Kalanay Interaction Sphere (named after the Sa Huỳnh culture and the Kalanay Cave of Masbate, Philippines). It was mainly between Sa Huỳnh and the Philippines, but also extended into archaeological sites in Taiwan, Southern Thailand, and northeastern Borneo. It is characterized by shared red-slipped pottery traditions, as well as double-headed and penannular ornaments known as lingling-o made from materials like green jade (sourced from Taiwan), green mica (from Mindoro), black nephrite (from Hà Tĩnh) and clay (from Vietnam and the Northern Philippines).[5] Sa Huynh also produced beads made from glass, carnelian, agate, olivine, zircon, gold and garnet; most of whom use materials that are also imported. Han dynasty-style bronze mirrors were also found in Sa Huynh sites.[5][6][7]

Baretang Bikolnon on Facebook: Couple Senior Citizen killed in fake encounter in Cawayan, Masbate
Human rights group and the family demand justice for the killed 2 senior citizens, a couple, in a fake encounter last February 5 in Purok 5, Brgy. Tuburan, Cawayan, Masbate.
According to the Philippine Army (PA), at 7:00 AM, its 2nd Infantry Battalion encountered ten members of the New People's Army (NPA) which reportedly lasted for eight minutes. Couple Pedro Regala, 78, and Florencia Regala, 67, were killed and tagged as NPA members.
The NPA-Masbate, Jose Rapsing Command, expressed that there was no encounter with the military and the victims are not members of their group.
"The Masbate Revolutionary Movement is determined to hold the military responsible and pay dearly for their heinous killing of the elderly couple," said Ka Luz del Mar, spokesperson of NPA Jose Rapsing Command, in their statement. "The weak and defenseless couple was picked up from their home, taken to a remote part of the creek, shot mercilessly, loaded with ammo pouches and brought out [that they were] killed in the encounter."
The Regala Family condemned the brutal killing of the victims and demanded for justice.
"It's hard to accept that you were treated by merciless people like this," granddaughter Eulaica Regala stated in her social media account.
"No one has the right to take life, only God can take back our life," said grandson Lidions Invento. "This kind of incident is not new. We wanted to reveal the truth but nothing will happen because there is no justice for people like us who are poor."
"Go to the place, you will see how much pain happened to the two if it is right for them to experience such brutal killing," Invento said.
KARAPATAN - Masbate extends its condolences and sympathies to the orphans of the victims and is determined to unite and help them achieve justice.
According to Karapatan - Masbate, the recent brutal killing in the province was another reason to abolish the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC).
"Contrary to the peace and development of the NTF-ELCAC, it only brought peace to the grave and profit for the few, KARAPATAN - Masbate stated.
KARAPATAN - Masbate also calls on Masbateños who are disgusted by the brutal killing of the Regala couple to join the protest on February 25 to hold President Bongbong Marcos Jr. accountable and its "fascist minions" in their crimes against the people.
"Let's act together for justice," the human rights group said.

WEIRD ASK TIME!
4. which crypted being do you believe in?
32. do you have a favourite towel?
Beefro! Thank you so much for the weird ask (hehe)! / From this post!
4. Which Crypted being do you believe in?
Aswang, easy. I remember as a Filipino kid hearing all about them!
Tumblr media
An Aswang is a cryptid in Filipino folklore. The aswang is an inherently evil werewolf and vampire-like creature and is the subject of a wide variety of myths and stories. Spanish colonists noted that the Aswang was the most feared among the mythical creatures of the Philippines, even in the 16th century. The myth of the aswang is well known throughout the Philippines, except in the Ilocos region, which is the only region that does not have an equivalent myth. It is especially popular in the Western Visayan regions such as Capiz, Iloilo, Negros, Bohol, Masbate, Aklan, Antique. Other regional names for the aswang include "tik-tik", "wak-wak" and "soc-soc", which is the noise it makes when chasing prey.
There are many variants of aswang but the one that scared me the most was manananggal - a female aswang that would enter your home at night and feast upon unborn fetuses. I distinctly remember telling my lola that I was so scared of them that I would never allow myself to get pregnant, but, if you were you would need to place garlic on your belly to scare them away!
32. do you have a favourite towel?
I do, actually! It’s this smiley-faced towel from Baggu!
Tumblr media
I love this towel so much I bought multiples, in different colors / prints. I always go back to the smiley-faced ones, though!

"ink and imprints: sketching the story lines on my journey"
I was born on November 30,2005 at Cebu City, hello there I'm Brilliant Dia Brusas I have four siblings, two girls and 2 boys. I was 7 months old when I was born,so my aunt provide all the vitamins and milk for me because my mother has no work and that time my  parents separated because my grandpa doesn't support them. When I was 1 year old,my parents meet again so my father pursue my mother. My grandpa realize that I need a father and my father has a right to live with us,so my grandpa accept my father and we build a house in Lapu-Lapu City. When I get older,I'm a naughty child and a bad attitude,I didn't listen to my parents so tey both hated me. I just realized that I need their attention, they are so busy working they even hired a maid to take care of me and whenever they will hired a maid I will do anything to make that maid leave so that my parents will be the one take care of me.
I have an elder sister,a half sister, she was born at Masbate. When I was 8 years old my sister came and live here at Cebu,at first I really hate it because my parents let me feel that I am not their family, what my sister wants they give it. They always make her feel that she will be loved by them. I can't hate my elder sister because whenever my parents mad at me she is their by my side comforting me,she is always there whenever I need someone to lean on.
When I was in Junior High School, grade 7 I met a lot of friends,o have two best friends but I feel like I'm not their best friends because I am poor they are rich. And I met someone, she is so kind,so beautiful,so humble and brainy I really admire her. We were so close, until grade 10. When I was in grade 7 there was a grade 10 student girl who likes me,she is a cousin of one of my friends but that time is I was straight:)) she gives me flowers, and she always ask me to go out with her but nah I like someone else that time and it was a boy (shesh). When I was grade 9 pandemic era,t was so boring so I made a rp account or role play account,I made a male account and disguised as a boy. There,I meet a girl, she is the reason why i turned into a lesbian. She is just a simple girl, morena, has this perfect shape of nose,a beautiful eyes. She confessed her feelings, but I can't accept even though I liked her too because she didn't know that I'm a girl. 5 months have passed,I decided to tell her the truth she's not mad she even thank me I forgot the reason but she left me,I can't stop her.
When I was in grade 10 my mother went abroad because she has no idea where she can find a job that suits her and can surely help us. My elder sister went back to Masbate to finish her study. I am the one who take care of my younger siblings because my father is busy at work,he left the house in dawn and went home at night. It was so hard for me because I need to take care of my study and my siblings need help when they have an assignment. I am the one who do the house chores and even cooked for them. Months have passed,my mother hired a made to help me.
When I graduated,I choose the school of asian Learning Center Inc. to discover the whole Lapu-Lapu City because I know I will meet a lot of friends there. I'm an introvert that time so it was so hard for me to make friends, but I was so thankful to have a sitmate that so friendly,Juniela(imissyou) and Ace,they are the reason that I'm so friendly now and turn my self into extrovert haha. When we were in grade 12 Juniela moved into modular. Being a grade 12 student,it was hard, fun, exhausted and we made a lot of experience.

Ticao Island in Masbate, Philippines, is a hidden gem boasting pristine beaches, vibrant marine life, and a rich cultural heritage. As you step onto its shores, you're greeted by crystal-clear waters and powdery white sand. Explore its underwater wonders through snorkeling or diving, where you'll encounter colorful coral reefs teeming with tropical fish, sea turtles, and even majestic manta rays. While writing this travelogue, I can feel the butterflies on my stomach remembering all the core memories I built on the paradise island. Now, allow me to tell you the very reason I love beaches now…
I am beyond blessed and I could not thank the Lord more as my mother was born and raised on the Island, giving me a “VIP” access to visit the place once in a while. I can vividly remember my first-ever visit to the Island— a core memory that will live in my mind rent-free. Imagine a seven-year-old girl in awe of the scenery her mind could not even process. It was my first time to travel places outside the city I was born and raised in. So, here’s how it goes— setting off on our journey to Ticao Island, we start our adventure from the bustling streets of Caloocan City. Laden with anticipation and excitement, we made our way to the Cubao bus terminal, the “gateway” to our island paradise. Navigating through the vibrant chaos of Cubao, we finally reach the bus terminal, where a sea of vehicles awaits to carry travelers to their destinations. Amidst the hustle and bustle, my parents were able to secure our tickets for the long journey ahead — a ride to Pilar, Sorsogon, the launching point for our island escapade. As we boarded the bus, I remember settling into my seat, brimming with a mix of eagerness and patience for the voyage ahead. The engine hums to life, signaling the beginning of our 17-hour odyssey through picturesque landscapes and winding roads. With each passing hour, I find myself drifting in and out of sleep, lulled by the rhythmic motion of the bus and the gentle hum of conversation among fellow passengers. Along the way, we pass through beautiful countryside, quaint villages, and majestic mountains, each scene providing a look into the varied fabric of the Philippine archipelago. Finally, as dawn breaks on the horizon, we arrive at our destination — the Pilar Pier in Sorsogon. Stepping off the bus, I was greeted by the salty tang of the sea air and the sight of fishing boats and ferries bobbing gently in the harbor. There, at the edge of the world, our journey to Ticao Island truly began. With a sense of anticipation building in my chest, I take a moment to savor the thrill of exploration and discovery that lies ahead. For beyond these shores lies a paradise waiting to be explored, where azure waters and pristine beaches beckon with the promise of adventure and wonder. And so, with hearts full of excitement and wonder, we set sail towards the sun-kissed shores of Ticao Island, ready to start on the adventure of a lifetime.
As the ferry glides across the azure waters, I find myself struck with the sight of Ticao Island's rich foliage and craggy coastline. When I step ashore, I am immediately surrounded by a sensation of calm. Our lodging, Lola’s delightful home in the municipality of Monreal, is the ideal place for us to unwind from the polluted air and busy vibes of the City. For the first day, we decided to just rest and stay at Lola’s home. Oh! I almost forgot Barangay Real has no water line but the Lord is not cruel after all as He blessed the barangay with a flowing cold water spring in which people can have water for free— may it be for taking a bath, drinking water, washing clothes, and many more! For our whole stay there, we always took a bath and did laundry in the water spring or what the locals call “matang tubig”. It was a nice summer because of the water spring. We also climbed Lola's rubber plants from the neighboring peak to her house. It was a completely new experience for me to trek a mountain and find so many different flora and herbs. Hiking my Lola's rubber plants was a wonderfully enriching experience, as it allowed me to immerse myself in nature's wealth while also interacting with family. Trekking across the beautiful mountainside, surrounded by thick greenery and the earthy aroma of plants, must have been a sensory delight. Exploring the many plants and herbs along the journey undoubtedly inspired a sense of surprise and interest, strengthening my connection to the natural world. While the last thing I can remember from the trip was the beach we visited! The salty wind, the sun-kissed white sands, and the rhythmic music of the waves breaking against the shore all work together to provide the ideal setting for relaxation. And oh the joys of beachside activities! Building sandcastles became an art form, with each grain of sand meticulously sculpted into turrets and moats, a testament to our boundless imagination and creativity. The laughter of my cousins and I echoed along the shoreline as we splashed in the glittering seas, our joy contagious as we reveled in the freedom of the open waters. I also remember how we got very sentimental as the day drew to a close, painting the sky in hues of pink and orange. We gathered together for one last embrace before bidding farewell, before going back to reality, to the beachside. Though separated by distance and time, the memories we made on this idyllic shore will forever bind us together, a treasure trove of moments to cherish until we meet again. The sands beneath my feet bore witness to the depths of my heart's embrace of that unforgettable moment, capturing the essence of pure joy and bliss in their golden grains. Even now, the mere thought of sinking my toes into the soft, warm embrace of sand fills me with a sense of longing and nostalgia.
I miss my Lola and her cooking, and my cousins back there. I hope we can come back soon.
