Okay so, I have a Scream 6 fanfic that is an Ethan Landry x Reader story. The story follows the movie however, it has a different ending. This story surrounds more around the reader since she is the daughter of Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley! It has some lines and scenes that are the same as the movie but again it has a lot of changes. If anyone is interested in reading this please let me know or just like this post and I’ll get to typing it! ❤️

media roundup dec 2024
hi everyone :3 another backlog post from december! its always interesting to look back at something that you were super into during finals. haha. during finals week i think i read a romance novel every 2-3 days?
with this, ive read through almost every single courtney milan book that my library has to offer. they are excellent romance novels if that's your thing, but i also watched some fantastic movies and played some really good games :3 once again will be crossposted up on my website at. some point in time
books:
once upon a marquess by courtney milan: m/f romance. judith, a ruined woman from a ruined family, encounters the man responsible for her familys downfall: her childhood friend. i started reading through this series bc of the most recent installment, the devil comes reading. that ones still my favorite but this one is pretty good! the relationships between the worth siblings were really good and the banter was cute :3 i think ms milans strong sideplots come through pretty clear here--the tension of judiths search for her sister was really sad! her every wish by courtney milan: f/m romance novella. daisy is trying to bluff her way into a grant to start her business, but only one person has the confidence to bullshit his way through: her ex. ok idgaf about small businesses so i didnt read this one for a while, but crash (the love interest) is sooo charming :3 the reasons that their relationship fell apart and the way those hurts were resolved felt really good i think. yay! the pursuit of… by courtney milan: m/m romance novella. hunter, a black soldier during the american revolution, is trying to get back to his family. a british deserter with nothing better to do accompanies him. yeah this was cute. not a lot to say about it :3 the charm offensive by allison cochrun: m/m romance which i picked up bc its about a romance between the bachelor (from the bachelor) and a producer on set. (its not actually the bachelor.) very cute! very fluffy! i have to say, not quite as good as uhhhh all of the courtney milan books ive read over the past couple months but still pretty solid. dev is a cute lead but i found the other lead (charlie or sth) kinda annoying for a significant portion of the book. which i think is somewhat intentional but its like ehhh. i can find awkward tech boys irl too. (SPOILERS) liked how the 'evil ex' actually got some nuance to him too mrs martins incomparable adventure by courtney milan: f/f romance novella featuring two women over 70!!!! and its conwoman x mark?? dudeee miss milan NEEDS to write more femslash im kinda begging here. this was really light and fluffy and also just really awesome. there is a lot to appreciate about romance when youre old i think. im really into it 👍 after the wedding by courtney milan: f/m romance. ok so if you read the first book in the worth saga u know a big b-plot is about trying to find judiths sister camilla. this book is about camilla! so spoilers for that. she gets forced into a mutually unwanted wedding, and while the bride and groom try to annul the wedding they ~also grow feelings~. another milan novel with a weird amount of detail on ceramic design + manufacture? well im not complaining that part was really cool actually. camillas situation is honestly just really sad so its satisfying to see her get out of it
what happened after midnight by courtney milan: f/m romance novella. a man chases after his (former) betrothed after she runs away with his fortune? yeah this was cute. loved the melodrama
unclaimed by courtney milan: dnf. f/m romance. a woman has staked her livelihood on her ability to seduce the ultimate target: the inventor of male chastity??? lmao this is one of her earlier novels published in 2011 (i think) and it kinda shows? the premise is a little bit too unserious for me and the banter/dynamic between the main pair is just not quite as good. it also felt like it dragged a bit. however!!!! i would still extremely recommend pretty much all of her more recently published stuff!! so
love on the brain by ali hazelwood: dnf. f/m romance, but its also by the reylo author. this one neuroscientist has to work on a project with a guy who she thinks hates her, but actually he is ~super in love and too shy to say it~ my mom really wanted me to read this bc she likes the author a lot and "it has women in stem". well guys i have to say i am not a fan of the reylo author. honestly out of all the women in the book the lead is literally the least interesting one? idk it was bad. uninspiring prose. also i wasnt really a big fan of the way it focused on chauvinism and discrimination in the workplace, but thats a personal thing
comics/manga:
peace of mind (2019): short furry comic about a cosmetic brain surgeon, and some of the issues she just cant fix. yeah this was cute!!! pretty classic concept but presented in a sillyfun way imo. like literally only 20 pages i thought the art style was cute go check it out if you have the time
yugami kun has no friends: slice of life school comedy about a transfer student desperate to make friends after moving around her whole life who unfortunately gets placed next to yugami, who is THE MOST AUTISTIC BOY IN THE WORLD. i think i read this whole series in like two days lmfao its just?? extremely charming??? i really like these sort of slices of life where you get to gradually expand your cast of characters over time. everyone is sort of an ass but also trying their best in the way that high schoolers kinda are. also has some very fun will-they-or-wont-they. bro i felt straightbaited. also has some really charming art with good expressions! definitely recommend :3
to strip the flesh by oto toda: manga oneshot from an anthology. chiaki, a trans man, works as an animal dissection youtuber but feels trapped in the closet to keep his father happy. idt it hit as hard for me as it might for some people but i still liked it! wow being trans! and being meat!
movies/tv:
blade (1998): marvel action movie about vampires (and the half-vampire sworn to slay them) but like, before marvel moveis were bad. watched this with friends over the thanksgiving weekend and it was so badass!!!!!!! fuck yeah!!!! honestly id forgotten that action movies can be good but they seriously can be. full of style :3 the boy and the heron: miyazaki movie about uh, grief? and isekai-ing into a cool world with freaky stuff? i heard somewhat negative reviews from my Movie Friends before watching this, which definitely colored my impression. yeah its a gorgeous movie, but also kinda messy and not super coherent imo. mr miyazaki please quit your job and spend time with your family ok. log off christmas perfection: f/m christmas hallmark romcom. protag who just wants the perfect (IRISH) christmas is transported to a world of eternal (IRISH) christmas where her parents are no longer divorced, everyone drinks hot cocoa every day, she has the perfect boyfriend, etc. will her childhood friend be able to get her out? does she even WANT to get out? so i got this rec from a post made by @.dragonomatopoeia who is apparently the hallmark romcom expert. dude. this movie is so fucking awesome. its literally christmas coraline. i love how everything is irish for no reason and also the irish. please watch this movie
video games:
zachtronics solitaire collection: ok so this is literally just a bunch of solitaire-like games. zachtronic games is infamous for making games that feel like work (spacechem, shenzhen i/o, etc). they also included solitaire minigames in several of these, which are compiled here! most of these are arent standard solitaire games, like spider or klondike. theres a solitaire based off of kabufuda, a solitaire based on mahjong (but not like that other one.) and also my favorite, tarot-based FORTUNES FOUNDATION!! which gives you a READING at the end!!! anyways i had to uninstall this game because i was spending 20 hours a week on it.
7 billion humans: parallel programming game. in a world where robots have replaced all necessary labor, whats left for mankind to do? well, make up jobs for themselves, of course! ive grown up with tomorrow corporations dry, dark, and corporate sense of humor from world of goo and that continues, of course. a fun set of problems that gets really fucking tricky, especially if you even take the teeniest peek at optimization. also has a lot of QOL improvements from the initial game such as being able to c+p code, line by line debugging, and more! i feel like youre already going to know if this game is for you or not.
in stars and time: rpg game about TIMELOOPS!!! siffrin, an adventurer, gets trapped in a timeloop on the day of the final boss. dudeeeeee ok ive been a fan of insertdisc5s writing/art for like an embarrassingly long time and it was really cool to see it in longform. some of my friends got to see me rending my hair and wailing about this game in real time even! i think isabeau + odile was my favorite non siffrin rship, but im a huge sucker for romance so the siffrin + isa stuff really got me. and in the end i got extremely suckerpunched by Loop Obsession and also every single character + convo was very delightful so who can say!!! i remember seeing some crits saying that the writing felt too 'young' or juvenile--it definitely takes a lot of inspiration from undertale, earthbound and the like, but also i think that like. the jrpg genre As A Whole demands some willingness for like. idk Earnest and Youthful Whimsy. plus i literally am a youth so it didnt bother me lol. the game definitely can feel pretty grindy at times, but its also like…. very ludonarratively accurate? or something like that?? like. you get tired of killing the same stuff + skipping the same convos As siffrin becomes inured to the loops, as they become increasingly estranged from the rest of the party. which is honestly really awesome and captures that rpg grindy feeling like nothing else really does haha. (and theres also quite a few features to ease that friction!) even if you played the demo there are some really good twists still left in there and also i teared up at the end fr. who else thought about loop (loop)
music:
i spent a lot of this month listening to the clod by no party for cao dong and scales by king isis, which ive already talked about! so im going to spotlight a couple tracks + one album ig lol?? grace by idles: this is from idles' upcoming album tangk which im super looking forward to!!!! i love when these guys do slower tracks (such as progress and mtt 420 rr from their previous album) and this is a very nice evolution from that. has a warm but slightly eerie feeling zapper by nanoray: more jungle music!!!! this is the album that introduced me to nanoray bc i knew a guy who would just blast this kind of stuff while cleaning the kitchen. favorites are nekomata '97 and salmon cannon deluxe--i tend to listen to this album in like, airports and stuff or while cleaning? its such such a wall of catgirl-themed sound that its impossible to be anxious :P iron by woodkid: ok so i found this from the playlists for in stars and time that came out before release--specifically, the one for the king? (big villain who wants to freeze the kingdom in time forever) i havent listened to this since before finishing the game and man. listening to the lyrics with additional context is kinda crazy. anyways woodkid is apparently much better known for directing a bunch of music videos such as KATY PERRYS TEENAGE DREAM? but also makes 'chamber pop' which is when, uh, pop music incorporates a lot of classical instruments? anyways i have a lot of fondness for brass (synth or not) in pop music so this was nice <3 so melancholy… so winter…learning that this was also used for an assassins creed trailer did make me like it less unfortunately.
hey whats up. writing about stuff i read a while ago isnt as interesting huh… but i also feel the need to do things in chronological order… oh well :3 the semester starts for me very soon.. how scary. anyways if you finished reading thanks as always! dont forget to stretch your hamstrings. did you know that crab rangoon is named after the city of yangon in myanmar?

hello hello hello i am back for a bit and since i've missed eurovision and the mandatory madness posting that goes with it, i was wondering if you'd mind giving me a quick rundown? Apparently mika was there??? The pu*sy salad song didn't make it??? idk that's the only two things I did hear abt it (btw this is your excuse to rant abt it if you want to <3 don't feel pressured tho ! )💖
oh my gosh peng. that was A Night. ill link some stuff in case you or anyone else wants to know what im talking about
alright alright alright. so first off pussy salad song didnt make it, which was a travesty truly and i dont think i will ever recover. i honestly dont understand how that happened. im devastated
mika was hosting! what a legend that guy is. he performed during voting time, and when he performed in the second semi final it was awful. they let him sing some sting cover and it was boring af and we were all sad bc that's mika let him sing some mika songs! but then last night he did. oh peng, he did.
måneskin performed with supermodel, which i like but i dont love the idea of them working with max martin tbh. i dont want them to lose their soul yk? anyway they were amazing and looked amazing as usual, but damiano was injured and for some reason they kept interviewing him without giving him his crutches which was painful to watch. we did get this picture out of it tho.
the host asked damiano to give advice to this year's competitors, and he said "have fun and dont get too close to tables"
sweden sent one of the sexiest people ive laid my eyes on
(unpopular opinion here) i actually liked finland's entry a lot. but maybe it's also bc their guitarist was. very hot
there were 3 Good entries - ukraine, moldova and serbia
moldova's song was about trains? apparently. i thought it was one of the best moments of the night
serbia. i want to give everything i own to that woman. neta and i were doing the hand dance the whole night
the jury were shit, as usual. the uk were in the lead up until the audience votes were revealed. which was Hilarious
germany received 0 points from the jury and 6 points from the audience. as they should
courtney act announced the australian jury votes!!!! she was marvelous
mika was so sweet seriously
ukraine won, rightfully so.
ukrainian flute guy im naming my firstborn after you

Lol what's wrong with romancing the inventor? I've never heard of it and I love hearing people Go Off about books. Are there many ff books that youd reccomend people specifically not read?
*cracks knuckles* HO BOY this is gonna be petty
So to start off, Gail Carriger is Extremely Popular. She writes these... Quirky Steampunk(??) books  and she’s got this whole Quirky Steampunk image that is already lowkey irritating to me but hey, you do you, if it makes you happy. But people kept going on and on about her books and I saw one of them was f/f so i thought “alright, i keep hearing about this one, it must be good?”
ITS NOT. ITS NOT GOOD. The heroine is this bland characterless husk that is constantly, and I mean CONSTANTLY, described as extremely thin and white and ~beautiful~ by everyone, which again, irritating. All the vampires just want her, but oh no, shes but a measly maid! Honestly, the book starts of her being so horny for getting turned into vampire, i thought it was gonna be great, but it didnt really go anywhere, at least at the point where i had to drop the book.
There is so much sexual harassment and assault! She gets constantly pawed at which was so gross!! The love interest was interesting in theory (a butch(??) mad scientist lady, or at least gail carriger’s idea of what a butch is lmao) but again, so bland. There was no chemistry between them either!!
But! What pissed me off the most was when the heroine from a previous series shows up and the protag of this one just mentally goes OFF about her. There's a scene where the protag, repeatedly described as beautiful and skinny and white meets the protag from the previous series and she describes her as 'too loud and too big with too big a nose and dark features' with this nasty tone and I was like 'oh you just described me'. She made a big deal of having a fat heroine in her series, and then she writes another heroine from a later series insult and fatshame her for her looks. What in the Actual Fuck!!!!!!!!! Fuck off!!! Also theres a thing in this series that italians have no soul(????????????), which uh, idk if you know anything about racial politics of europe, but its REALLY not a great look for a super pale white brit to write into her series that italians have no soul. Fucking yikes gail carriger, what the fuck
I dropped the book immediately after this because i was already bored and frustrated with everything else and then this bullshit!! And ever since then, any mention of this author makes me grit my teeth
Anyway here’s more f/f books Id warn people about:
Stormsong by CL Polk: read my review of the first book and tell me if you think the villainous sister is not only redeemable, but also deserving of her own book
Her Lady's Honor by Renée Dahlia: this is my biggest disappointment of this year. It promised a ww1 vet nurse and her captains daughter falling in love, and gave me miserable story with people being assholes to each other, and a terrifyingly blase treatment of violent parental abuse. I made it about 25% in before I had to bail
The Lady and Her Secret Lover by Jenn LeBlanc: One of the most gorgeous covers slapped on probably THE most triggering book Ive ever read. I kept reading because I couldnt believe all the horrific things happening in this book. Read my review for more info
Mrs. Martin’s Incomparable Adventure by Courtney Milan: in my experience, courtney milan’s books are on a VERY slippery sliding scale of quality, and this was a rock bottom. Written as a “stick it to the patriarchy, yeehaw!” “fun adventure”, it managed to make me literally sick with anxiety. Im not joking, this book made me so anxious my stomach started hurting. This book made me FURIOUS. Again, read my review for more details

Stream Rock Music to Your Computer System, Mobile Device, Or TV Screen
Stream rock music to your computer, mobile phone, or TV screen. Listen to Coldplay in-studio sessions, which include Chris Martin describing the song selection process, John Oates playing an acoustic variation of "Arkansas," and Jeff Lynne going over writing "Evil Woman" and 'Don't Let Me Down." Or capture a live efficiency from Alter Bridge, Sum 41, or Puddle of Mudd. Other icons of 80s rock include Joan Jett and Stevie Nicks, and female rock architects like Siouxsie Sioux and Courtney Love. To listen to rock see WWT Radio at radio.wwtmedia.com and stream now.
Alternative rock is a post-punk band from the mid 1980s to the mid 1990s Alternative rock emerged in the late 80s and early 90s, integrating post-punk with new wave. This movement saw a big industrial success and assisted to establish the sound of alternative rock as an established style of rock. However, the post-punk visual of the age was securely opposed by much of the artists included. While they might have achieved success, lots of were dissatisfied with the success they had actually accomplished, and they were unwilling to welcome it. Although the term" alternative rock "has no specific meaning, it is often utilized as a catch-all term for any category of rock that does not conform to mainstream popular song trends. The term is typically used to describe a range of underground rock categories from the 1980s to the 1990s This genre often integrates folk music and reggae into its sound. Muse are an English band from Teignmouth, Devon. They formed in 1987 and became one of the first bands to burglarize the mainstream with their self-titled debut album. The band's early albums amassed important honor and acquired the group a huge cult following. In 2000, Muse's launching album Absolution turned into one of the most successful alternative rock albums in the UK. stream pop radio is a post-punk band from the mid 1980s to the mid 1990s . Post-punk music has actually been a staple of the music scene because the 1970s. The term post-punk originates from the word post-, which is short for post-punk. The term itself has actually ended up being a neologism for post-punk, a design of music that included a mix of styles. In the late 1980s, the category took on a brand-new kind. After the emergence of post-punk, the category was transformed into pop metal. This subgenre focuses on guitars and bass lines and functions misshaped, overdriven noises. The category's name originates from the truth that a lot of the bands in this genre are really industrial and are incredibly popular. For the most part, this style is still mostly important in today's pop metal scene. British music publications had an influential role in this brand-new category, establishing dense and amusing criticism of post-punk rock. NME and Sounds both promoted the work of Siouxsie and the Banshees and the Wire, as well as the album "Chairs Missing." Meanwhile, the Raincoats self-titled debut and Talking Heads' Fear of Music were also celebrated. Post-punk music is largely based upon guitars Initially, this style was described as "alternative rock" and included numerous subgenres. In the 1990s, post-punk bands ended up being more distinct from one another. They often bundled elements of alternative rock and pop into their music In addition, alternative rock became an influential part of the music scene.
Album-oriented rock is hard, edgy music used electric guitars. Acid rock is a type of music made with the use of electrical guitars. The genre is heavily influenced by the blues genre and often features aspects of British blues, but with a contemporary twist. Unlike lots of other kinds of music, hard rock is not limited to the significant chords of I, IV, and V, however likewise consists of other chords such as D, G, and A. The significant chords are typically rooted in minor scale tones. Throughout the 1970s, album-oriented rock acquired appeal, spawning a range of sub-genres. Alice Cooper released the first shock rock album in 1972, and Aerosmith and Queen quickly followed with their own launching albums. In addition to their two-album, double-live album "The Black Album" and "Use Your Illusion," KISS forged a brand-new course for hard rock, mixing various categories into a single noise. Acid rock is likewise called grunge. The genre is defined by heavy guitars and drums, and is frequently related to the hippie sub-culture. It is really similar to punk music. Throughout its heyday, hard rock was the soundtrack for college celebrations, bringing a more youthful generation together. Moreover, it assisted in specifying a social model. It contributed to the civil liberties motion in the 60s and affected public mindset. It assisted separate social conservatism from social freedom, leading to a blend of diverse groups. Classic rock is a subgenre of rock music. Timeless rock is a category of rock music that is thought about timeless, including the best of rock's past. This category has roots in the psychedelic rock and soul of the 1950s and 1960s, in addition to the heavy metal of the 1970s and 1990s. Because classic rock is such a diverse category, its beginning point is often debatable. Numerous music historians point to the cotton fields of the South as the birth place of the blues, as African servants sang in an effort to ease their discomfort and sadness. The very first well-known acts to make this category a success were the Beatles, Eric Clapton, and Jeff Beck. In the 1960s, these artists ended up being the voice of the country, speaking about Civil Rights problems and the Vietnam War. Their musical song structures were heavily affected by blues, including additional beats in procedures. As a result, their music is often characterized by a sense of protest.
Although all rock music has its roots in the blues, there are still a few subgenres that accept this tradition. For instance, blues-rock draws motivation from the custom of the blues, and the category's biggest innovations have come from it. This is a subgenre of rock that accommodates teenagers and older listeners alike. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with listening to traditional rock on your iPod! Streaming rock music is legal Streaming rock music is legal if you have the right to stream it, according to the law. The Music Modernization Act of 2018 was signed into law with Kid Rock's assistance. Jaw Surgery Takes a $27,119 Bite out of One Man’s Budget
For years, Ely Bair dealt with migraine headaches, jaw pain and high blood pressure, until a dentist recommended surgery to realign his jaw to get to the root of his health problems.
The fix would involve two surgeries over a couple of years and wearing braces on his teeth before and in between the procedures.
Bair had the first surgery, on his upper jaw, in 2018 at Swedish Medical Center, First Hill Campus in Seattle. The surgery was covered by his Premera Blue Cross plan, and Bair’s out-of-pocket hospital expense was $3,000.
He changed jobs in 2019 but still had Premera health insurance. In 2020, he had the planned surgery on his lower jaw at the same hospital where he’d been treated the first time. The surgery went well, and he spent one night in the hospital before being discharged. He was healing well and beginning to see the benefits of the surgeries.
Then the bill arrived.
The Patient: Ely Bair, 35, a quality assurance analyst. He has a Premera Blue Cross health plan through his job at a biotech firm in Seattle.
Total Bill: Swedish Medical Center billed Bair $27,119 for the second surgery in July 2020. This was Bair’s share of the negotiated rate, after the hospital took $14,310 off the charge. His insurer paid $5,000. Bair owed additional bills to the surgeon and the anesthesiologist.
Service Provider: Swedish First Hill Campus in Seattle, part of the largest nonprofit health system in the Seattle area, which is affiliated with Providence, a major Catholic health care network.
What Gives: Bair hit two maddening health system pitfalls here: He expected his new plan to behave like his previous one from the same insurer — and he expected his mouth to be treated like the rest of his body. Neither commonsense notion appears true in America’s health system.
Typically, large companies, such as Bair’s employers, “self insure,” meaning they pay their workers’ health costs but use insurance companies to maintain provider networks and handle claims. When Bair changed jobs, his insurance coverage changed even though both employers used Premera. Bair paid $3,000 for his first surgery because that was the out-of-pocket maximum under his plan from his previous employer, which covered oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Bair expected that using the same hospital and the same insurance carrier would mean his costs would be similar for part two of his treatment. Bair’s oral and maxillofacial surgeon — the same doctor who performed the first procedure — checked Bair’s benefits through his insurer’s online portal and thought it would be covered. Premera also sent his doctor confirmation agreeing that the second procedure was medically necessary.
About three months after the surgery, Bair was shocked to get the large hospital bill — about $24,000 higher than he expected.
When he called Premera, he learned his new plan had a $5,000 lifetime limit on coverage for the reconstructive jaw procedure known as orthognathic surgery, which is sometimes regarded as a dental rather than a medical intervention. His doctor said that information was not noted in Bair’s benefits when the practice reviewed them through an online portal. Premera told Bair he should have known about the limit because it was listed in his detailed, hard-copy, 86-page member-benefit booklet.
The Affordable Care Act in 2014 eliminated lifetime and annual caps on insurance coverage for categories of treatment such as prescription drugs, laboratory services and mental health care. While the ACA lists broad categories about what is considered an “essential health benefit,” each state decides which services are included in each category and the scope or duration that must be offered. Bariatric surgery, physical therapy and abortion are examples of care for which insurance coverage can vary a lot by state under this ACA provision. Orthognathic surgery is not considered an essential health benefit in Washington. It is sometimes performed for cosmetic purposes only. Also, plans sometimes regard the surgery as part of orthodontia — which frequently involves limits on coverage. But for Bair, it was a clear medical necessity.
Without an ACA requirement for orthognathic surgery, Premera and self-insured plans are allowed to provide various levels of benefits and can impose annual and lifetime caps.
Premera spokesperson Courtney Wallace said Bair transferred from a plan with his former company that did not have a lifetime maximum to a plan with a $5,000 lifetime maximum benefit.
Tumblr media
Martine Brousse, a patient advocate and owner of AdvimedPro, which helps patients with health care billing disputes, said Bair acted appropriately by using a doctor and hospital in his health plan’s network and checking with his doctor about his insurance coverage.
She said Swedish should have told him before the surgery — which was planned weeks ahead of time — how much he would have to pay. “That is a failure on part of the hospital,” she said.
Sabrina Corlette, co-director of the Georgetown University Center on Health Insurance Reforms, said it doesn’t seem fair that his first employer covered the cost of his surgery but the second employer did not. She said the $27,000 bill seemed excessive and the $5,000 lifetime limit very low. “Essential health benefits serve a really important function, and when there are gaps or holes people can really get hurt,” she said.
Resolution: Bair’s doctor told him the hospital charge was at least three times the amount Swedish charges uninsured patients for the same surgery. Bair said Swedish offered to let him pay the bill over two years but did not make any other concessions.
Swedish would not say why it did not verify Bair’s insurance benefits before the surgery or let him know he would face an enormous bill even though he was insured.
“Hospital pricing is complex and nuanced,” Swedish officials said in a statement. Bair’s bill “was inclusive of all the care he received, which included specialized services and expertise, equipment and the operating room time. He had a jaw procedure that had a maximum benefit from his insurer of $5,000. He was billed the balance not covered by his insurer.”
The hospital system said it also has an online tool that generates estimates tailored to patients’ coverage and choice of hospital.
The online tool did not come up with anything on the term “orthognathic surgery,” however.

Bair appealed three times to Premera to reconsider its decision to cover only $5,000 of the cost of his procedure. But the insurer rejected each one saying he had exhausted his lifetime orthognathic surgery benefit and he was responsible for any additional care. When Swedish wouldn’t lower his cost, he filed a complaint in December 2020 with the state attorney general’s office.
A few months later, Swedish reduced Bair’s bill from over $27,000 to $7,164.
“Because neither the patient nor his provider was aware of this limitation in coverage prior to the procedure, the surgeon advocated on the patient’s behalf to get the bill lowered,” the hospital told KHN in a statement.
Bair agreed to pay the lower amount. “The bill is at least a much more manageable number than the financial ruin $27,000 would have been,” he said. “I am just looking forward to closing this chapter and moving on.”
His surgeon, who helped him fight the hospital bill and limited insurance coverage, reduced his bill to $5,000 from $10,000, Bair said.
Bair said his employer, Adaptive Biotechnologies, is looking into eliminating its $5,000 lifetime limit for the procedure when it is medically necessary.
Since the surgery, Bair said he gets far fewer migraine headaches and his high blood pressure has been reduced. “I feel way more energized,” he said.
The Takeaway: When facing a planned surgery, talk to your hospital, doctor and insurer about how much of the bill you will be responsible for — and get it in writing before any procedure.
“In theory, you should be able to rely on your provider to confirm your coverage but, in practice, it is in your best interest to call your insurer yourself,” Corlette said.
Even though the ACA eliminated lifetime and annual caps on coverage, that applies only to services deemed essential in a patient’s state. Be aware that certain surgeries — like jaw surgery — lie in a gray area; insurers might not consider them a necessary medical intervention or even a medical procedure at all. Corlette said health plans should notify patients when they are closing in on lifetime or annual limits, but that doesn’t always happen.
Also, be aware that even though your insurance carrier may stay the same after switching jobs, your benefits could be quite different.
Kudos to Bair for being a proactive patient and appealing to the state attorney general — which got him a positive result.
