Quote
The Hollywood Reporter: As new generations of viewers continue to find the show, what are your hopes for the Grace and Frankie legacy? Marta Kauffman: A couple of things. One is I hope that people realize that, although there are some indignities about growing older, it’s also an opportunity to change and grow and do new things. Which ties into the other thing, which is that, no matter how bad things look, you can always start again.

All right so get ready for a rant about Ross and Rachel’s relationship because I first watched friends many years ago and I still can’t get over it.
First of all the whole “we were on a break” “no, we were not” really shallows the problem I have with that situation.
Let’s recap: Ross is angry at Rachel because she has to work even though it’s their anniversary, and I can understand his irritation but it’s not like she went out drinking with some friends. She’s at work. Because she’s been asked to stay. And what’s like really important she has recently started this job, so it’s really not the moment for, well, not doing the work you’re supposed to do even if it’s after hours. At the beginning of any job you have to show the best side of yourself. If you don’t you can forget about promotions for a long time.
At the beginning of the relationship Ross also has to do things for his work that caused the delay in their dates (that time when they went to the museum because he had to work and lost reservations at the restaurant). Rachel had to accept that. And she did.
But Ross did not. He threw a fit. And wanted Rachel to apologize to him even after he tried to meddle in her work just because.
They were both angry and fighting. Rachel suggested “they should take a break” (btw how I see it a break is not a breakup, while on a break you can sort out your feelings and only after make a decision, a breakup is a decision) but Ross didn’t agree nor disagree. He stormed out of the flat.
So when supposedly both of them were supposed to sort out their feelings both turned to people - only Rachel decided that Mark should go. Ross went the other way.
But also I feel like it’s all about her job. For some reason Ross was extremely angry that she has a job she likes (and the Mark issue and the jealousy is the other thing; here I’m talking about ‘you should realize that it’s just a job’ scene). As if he preferred she stay at the waitressing job, even though he used it as a reason not to be with her on his list.
Even after all this years when Rachel got the job in Paris first he got out of his way to change her mind and then even after he “let” her go, he decided she needs to know about his feelings because it would make her stay.
Even though she really wanted to go to Paris and set her mind to it.
And I think this would be a happy ending. Them being apart. I think Emily saw that too. There is a lot of hate for her but I’m going to say something controversial: she tried to do everything that needed to be done for the relationship to work.
Emily saw how toxic the relationship between Ross and Rachel was. And she understood that the only way for her marriage to work and be healthy was for Rachel to disappear from Ross’s life.
It’s like during the whole show Ross and Rachel couldn’t built a healthy relationship with anybody else. But not because they are meant to be together. I feel like they brought out the worst in each other and innocent people just got involved into the toxicity.
This whole plot line is sad in a way. I feel like Rachel was maturing with every season and she could have ended up as a great independent mother with amazing career if it wasn’t for Ross acting like an eight grader he was when he fell for her and slowing down her development.

Hands down the best sitcom I have ever watched. Not to say that other sitcoms are bad but this show simply holds special place for me. And I think this is what makes the show is so widely popular and loved cross-generations. The show doesn't have any particular theme or issues--it captures basically day-to-day dynamics. It exposes the problems we typically face--our jobs are jokes and our love lives are dead-on-arrival. Not to mention the absurd efforts we try to make it out alive. This show is easy for people to relate to. It doesn't take any specific segment of people to understand most of the jokes the show carried out.

Marta Kauffman Apologizes with $4M Endowment
"Friends" Creator Donates $4 Million to Apologize for Lack of Show Diversity
Marta Kauffman, creator of “Friends” has donated $4 million to apologize for the lack of diversity in her New York-based sit-com. “Friends,” which ran for 10 years and 236 episodes, was a very white show. The most prominent actor of color featured in the show was Aisha Taylor, who appeared in only nine episodes of the final two seasons as a love interest for both Joey and Ross, with no story-line…

i get that some people do not ship grace and frankie and that’s fine (i can’t relate, but that’s fine!), but i feel like describing their whole thing as platonic female friendship just isn’t quite accurate by the time the series is over. it’s, like, platonic female friendship where you live together and you’ve committed to being each other’s number one priority and life partner forevermore, and have deliberately foregone romantic relationships with men in order to instead be with each other. i feel like that doesn’t quite fit in the “yah yah, the power of platonic female friendship!” box. platonic female friendship is a powerful force to be reckoned with indeed and one of the greatest blessings on this sorry earth, but most platonic female friendships do not take that particular shape.
