Episode 313: You must rest
This one is an exercise in nostalgia for people who have been watching Dark Shadows from the beginning. We remember the days when high-born ne’er-do-well Roger Collins was the show’s chief villain, a man with so little sense of family loyalty that he openly hated his own son. That son, strange and troubled boy David, repaid his father’s hatred by trying to murder him. Roger has been off-screen…

The Brothers: The Newly Weds (3.2, BBC, 1974)
"They're late."
"A little."
"Nearly an hour!"
"It doesn't matter, it's Sunday."
"Well, I like people to be on time - when they're not, it means they keep other people waiting."
"Yes, Edward, but I think you were born with an alarm clock in your head; not everybody's like that."

The Godsend (full film) 1980

youtube
A 1980 British horror film directed by Gabrielle Beaumont and written by Olaf Pooley. It is based on the 1976 novel The Godsend by Bernard Taylor. The film stars Malcolm Stoddard, Cyd Hayman, Angela Pleasence, Patrick Barr, Wilhelmina Green and Joanne Boorman. Alan and Kate Marlowe are out an walk with their kids, Davy, Lucy, Sam, and baby Matthew. Kate meets a pregnant stranger and she comes home with them. It's apparent that Alan finds something "off" about her right away, as she intensely stares at him, but he doesn't say anything. Left briefly unattended, she cuts their telephone line. Alan is about to drive her home, but she goes into labor, and Kate helps her deliver a baby girl. The next day, Kate sees the woman is gone, having abandoned the child with them. Despite Alan's reservations, Kate wants to keep the baby, whom they name Bonnie. Later on, they find Matthew dead in a playpen with Bonnie. At a family picnic, Davy and Bonnie wander off, and they search for them desperately. Kate finds Bonnie on the bank of a creek with scratches on her hands, while Alan finds that Davy has drowned in the creek. Alan attempts to perform CPR on Davy, but is unsuccessful. Later, Kate and Alan agree that the scratches on Bonnie must have been from Davy saving her. Bonnie starts to break things and Sam gets blamed for them, despite him saying he didn't do it. Kate attributes this to Sam's jealousy of Bonnie. One day, the family is playing hide and go seek and Alan finds Sam dead in a barn. Later, Alan finds Bonnie's ribbon next to where Sam's body was. The Marlowe's begin to receive letters accusing them of killing their children and Kate falls into a depression. When a reporter comes to their house and upsets Kate, Alan agrees to move the family to London. Bonnie becomes ill with the mumps, and purposely kisses Alan as he takes a nap. He becomes ill with the mumps too, and has a flashback in a dream, to the circumstances of the deaths of his sons, and Bonnie being nearby in each one. At a playground, Alan watches Bonnie throw an unoccupied swing in the path of a swing Lucy is swinging on. The chains on the swing twist together, but Lucy does not fall off, and Alan is able to save her before she is hurt. Alan tries to discuss his concerns about Bonnie with Kate, saying she is not normal. Kate strongly disagrees, saying that Bonnie loves Lucy and was only playing. Alan says Bonnie loves Lucy the same way she loved their three boys, and Kate is disgusted at the insinuation. Alan tells Kate his theories about Bonnie being involved in the deaths, but she is still in disbelief. Alan uses an analogy about Bonnie, saying that a cuckoo lays its eggs in another nest, and the fledgling pushing the others out to get the full attention of the parents. Alan wants to send Bonnie away, but Kate refuses, so he kidnaps Lucy. Alan goes to see Kate, who is distraught that Alan will not tell her where Lucy is. Alan gives Kate an ultimatum to choose Bonnie or Lucy. She refuses to do so and he leaves. Later, they find out that Kate has had an accident and is in the hospital. Alan rushes back to London, where he learns that Kate had been pregnant, but miscarried due to the accident. Back at their apartment, Alan finds out from neighbor, Mr. Taverner, that Kate tripped over a doll at the top of a staircase and that Mrs. Taverner has taken Bonnie on a trip. Kate comes Alan's work to tell Alan him she wants a divorce. He is alarmed to learn that Bonnie is home alone with Lucy. Alan calls Lucy, telling her to go next door to the Taverner's. Bonnie has them locked in, and as Kate and Alan get home, Bonnie has used mind control on Lucy to make her jump out of a window to her death. Alan tries kill Bonnie, but Mr. Taverner pulls him off of her. Kate decides to stay with Bonnie, and Alan leaves her. At a park, Alan sees the strange woman who gave birth to Bonnie, and is now pregnant, and talking to the mother. He unsuccessfully runs after them to warn the family, but they are already gone.

Hi! I am a huge fan of your work. I just finished reading A Wolf in Hunter's Clothing for the first time (I read Making Connections about a half a dozen times) and I have to ask who wins the adult tournament while Stiles/ Puck is sleeping? I mean I KNOW that Eliot Spencer won every year before he go bit but I am curious if you had planned out in your head how the adult tournament went. Also, intentional or not Ian Malcolm is a fantastic name scheme because he is my favorite from Jurassic Park.
Ah, somebody finally got that! XD It was my wife’s suggestion to name him Malcolm, specifically because of Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park. And ever since the book came out, she’s been asking me “So did anyone get the Jurassic Park reference?” XD
On the subject of the tournament, this might be a bit of a disappointment because the winner was someone who is mentioned only briefly a couple times in the series: Katarina Nazario.
I actually thought about this a fair bit while I was doing the conversion. Katarina is one of those characters that I know a surprising amount about, for someone who is only mentioned once or twice and never actually has a spoken line. She’s Vanessa’s second daughter, younger than Vivien by about two years. She and Vivien had a strong rivalry that led to Katarina becoming basically one of the best physical fighters. Vivien, meanwhile, excelled more at tactics and strategy, thus her going into the Tribunal Pack hunters. Katarina instead got married and had kids, and would like to mention that this has not decreased her badassery one bit, and anyone who thinks it does can take a long walk off a short pier.
It’s mentioned briefly that Katarina married one of the Winchesters and doesn’t see her family a lot. She’s Hannah Winchester’s first lieutenant, and is responsible for basically all the hunting enterprises in Kansas and Nebraska. She would like to mention that just because the landscape is boring, it doesn’t mean that the hunting is. In her own words: “The Great Plains have seen some shit.”
Like Vanessa and Hannah, Katarina is not interested in hunter politics or their stupid war. She prefers to mind her own business and gets very annoyed when people try to mind hers. She did not attend the Conclave in the final book because she was eight months pregnant with her fourth child.
So that’s Katarina. ^_^
As for the tournament, the adult tournament is much larger than the kids’, and so a lot of characters who were there got knocked out in the early stages. Plus some of them don’t participate either because they’re too old for this shit (Frank Durand) or they know they’re out of shape and don’t want to embarrass themselves (Henry Durand).
The final eight in the tournament were Katarina, Alex Durand, Angela Peretti, Mikael Aronsson, Ned Stoddard, Ruben Gutierrez, Carmen Gutierrez, and Stella Jones.
The final four were Katarina, Alex, Ned, and Ruben.
(Mikael would like to mention he got knocked out of the tournament by Katarina, and it was awesome. I would like to mention that Ruben only made the final four because he was fighting his sister Carmen, who knew he’d be an enormous jerk to her for the next three years if she beat him in front of people.)
The final two were Katarina and Alex.
And the winner was Katarina.
Eleanor Nazario was the referee and she would like to mention that her wife is super hot and the sex that night was great.
That is all.

Cherry-Cola Casting// Scooby Doo!
Cherry-Cola Casting is when I take classic cartoons or comics and I fan-cast them to the best of my ability to actors/actresses of that era.
Fred Jones// Burt Ward
Burt Ward may be brunette but he was quite the dreamboat back in the day. Making a name for himself from Batman 1966. Burt Ward may not have been in much worth noting but as Robin, he really portrayed the characteristics of Fred that I think are worth noting.
Daphne Blake// Nancy Barrett
Again, Nancy Barrett is not red-headed. Nancy Barrett made her name portraying Carolyn Stoddard in the hit TV Show Dark Shadows in the 1960s-1971. Carolyn was adventurous, her clothing was on point. She almost seemed sort of clueless and found herself in trouble a lot. Which perfectly fits Danger-Prone Daphne.
Shaggy Rogers// Malcolm McDowell
Malcolm McDowell may have been known for portraying the villainous and unnerving characters but his personality fits Shaggy to a T. Both are humorous and out there. I think one role that screams Shaggy in sort of a way is Mick Travis from ‘O Lucky Man!’.
Velma Dinkley// Sally Field
Gidget, enough said. I basically found myself in complete weirded out when I found this photograph and saw how much she looked like Velma.
Bonus:
Crystal (Aliens Invaders)// Teresa Ann Savoy
What grasped my attention with Teresa was how her first alias in a magazine of Playmen in 1971 was that it was Terry and she was a runaway at age 16 to become a hippie in Sicily, Italy. Teresa with her films had a way of appearing otherworldly but also strong-willed. And she did not shy away from nudity and you can argue with me if you want. Crystal was nude in her alien form and children never noticed.

Legal Impropriety - Same Sad Story
17 MAR 1885. Austin Daily Statesman.
BUYING A PAPER.
The Daily Dispatch a paper published in Austin was yesterday sold by Sheriff Hornsby -- that is to say the press, printing material, etc. Dr. Stoddard, hating to see a paper he loved sacrificed, bought out the concern for $50. It is probable that in so doing, the doctor “dropped his wax” to use a highly figurative and somewhat slang phrase of the day. It seems that the proprietor Col. Leader, some seven years ago executed a mortgage on the above property to one Thomas. It also appears that at the time the property was not his to mortgage, being really owned by a certain Mr. Smith. Thomas therefore held a mortgage on property which the mortgager (Leader) did not own. Hence Stoddard is in no better fix than the mortgage. Some might ask if there was not a legal impropriety so to speak in the conveyance of things to which one has no title. So there is but it was several years ago, and all prosecutions therefore are barred by the statute of limitations. So it looks as if the purchaser of yesterday was left with the bag to hold.
VERY MONOTONOUS.
People have a right to complain when they see the same thing in print day after day. Likewise the reporter has a right to “kick when he is called to chronicle the same sad story of the “servant girl” night after night. It is rough on the readers, it is far rougher on the reporter. It makes him prematurely gray, and superlatively profane. It happened again Sunday night. The victim (No. 36) was a young girl -- a Swede -- employed on the premises of Mr. Abe Williams, the well-known gentleman who was robbed while on his way from the theater, not many weeks ago. It was late in the night. She was awakened by a noise at the door. It was locked and the intruder then tried the window. This scared the girl, who ran for protection toward the main house. The “villain still pursued her,” and catching up with her endeavored to drag the girl off the gallery. She scratched his face fiercely. Finally her screams brought Mrs. Williams to the door and the brute fled. The girl could not say whether it was a white man or a negro.

Melville è romanziere dal 1846 (Typee) a The Confidence-Man (1857). Sparito.
*
*
Come poeta, in ogni caso, Melville aveva esordito nel 1866, con Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War, pubblicato da Harper & Brothers.

Best Dream Quotes About Life, Love and the Future
Looking for thought-provoking dream quotes about your waking life?
The study of dreams has long been a fascination with many.
People often wake up puzzled by what they have dreamt.
Some want to search for the meaning of what ran through their mind.
As bizarre as some of the images and themes may seem, dreams are our subconscious way of working through things that are troubling us, or that are unsettled, while we sleep.
Dreams have been studied by so many individuals for years.
Many books have been written explaining the symbolism found in them.
While there is some discrepancy or multiple meanings for some of the dream symbols, most remain consistent. Understanding them can help an individual see the bigger picture and find greater meaning in their dreams.
In this respect, here are some dream quotes, dream sayings, and dream proverbs from some of the great – and surprising minds – of our time. Read them to understand more about your dreams and the nature of your reality.
Dream quotes to help you interpret your dreams and waking life better
1.) “Dreaming permits each and every one of us to be quietly and safely insane every night of our lives.”- William Dement
2.) “All that we see or seem, is but a dream within a dream.”- Edgar Allan Poe
3.) “Dreams are illustrations…from the book your soul is writing about you.”- Marsha Norman
4.) “The best thing about dreams is that fleeting moment, when you are between asleep and awake, when you don’t know the difference between reality and fantasy, when for just that one moment you feel with your entire soul that the dream is reality, and it really happened.”- James Arthur Baldwin
5.) “Dreams feel real while we’re in them. It’s only when we wake up that we realize something was actually strange.”- Inception, 2010 film
6.) “Even the loveliest dream bears like a blemish its difference from reality, the awareness that what it grants is mere illusion.”- Theodor Wiesengrund Adorno
7.) “Dreams are often most profound when they seem the most crazy.”- Sigmund Freud
9.) “Yet it is in our idleness, in our dreams, that the submerged truth sometimes comes to the top.”- Virginia Woolf
10.) “Dreaming is an act of pure imagination, attesting in all men a creative power, which if it were available in waking, would make every man a Dante or Shakespeare.”- H.F. Hedge
11.) “All the things one has forgotten scream for help in dreams.”- Elias Canetti
12.) “For often, when one is asleep, there is something in consciousness which declares that what then presents itself is but a dream.”- Aristotle
13.) “Dreams are more real than reality itself, they’re closer to the self.”- Gao Xingjian
14.) “The interpretation of dreams is the royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious activities of the mind.”- Sigmund Freud
15.) “Dreams are true while they last, and do we not live in dreams?”- Alfred Lord Tennyson
16.) “In sleep, fantasy takes the form of dreams. But in waking life, too, we continue to dream beneath the threshold of consciousness, especially when under the influence of repressed or other unconscious complexes.”- Carl Jung
17.) “A dream which is not interpreted is like a letter which is not read.”- The Talmud
18.) “I am accustomed to sleep and in my dreams to imagine the same things that lunatics imagine when awake.”- René Descartes
Dream quotes about the nature of our reality
19.) “Your world is not real!”- Inception, 2010 film
20.) “Every dream that anyone ever has is theirs alone and they never manage to share it. And they never manage to remember it either. Not truly or accurately. Not as it was. Our memories and our vocabularies aren’t up to the job.”- Alex Garland
21.) “Dreams are excursions into the limbo of things, a semi-deliverance from the human prison.”- Henri Amiel
22.) “Insomnia is a gross feeder. It will nourish itself on any kind of thinking, including thinking about not thinking.”- Clifton Fadiman
23.) “Sleep… Oh! How I loathe those little slices of death.”- Author unknown
24.) “Huge and mighty forms that do not live like living men, moved slowly through the mind by day and were trouble to my dreams.”- William Wordsworth
25.) “Dreams say what they mean, but they don’t say it in daytime language.”- Gail Godwin
26.) “A ruffled mind makes a restless pillow.”- Charlotte Brontë
27.) “Recall the old story of the rather refined young man who preferred sex dreams to visiting brothels because he met a much nicer type of girl that way.”- Vivian Mercer
28.) “I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can play together all night.”- Bill Watterson
29.) “There’s a long, long trail a-winding into the land of my dreams.”- Stoddard King, Jr.
30.) “One can write, think, and pray exclusively of others; dreams are all egocentric.”- Evelyn Waugh
31.) “Our dreams disturb us because they refuse to pander to our fondest notions of ourselves. The closer one looks, the more they seem to insist upon a challenging proposition: You must live truthfully. Right now. And always. Few forces in life present, with an equal sense of inevitability, the bare-knuckle facts of who we are, and the demands of what we might become.”- Marc Ian Barasch
32.) “In a dream you are never eighty.”- Anne Sexton
33.) “In dreams, we enter a world that’s entirely our own.”- Steven Kloves
34.) “I’ll take the dream I had last night, And put it in my freezer, So someday long and far away, When I’m an old grey greezer, I’ll take it out and thaw it out, This lovely dream I’ve frozen, And boil it up and sit me down And dip my old cold toes in.”- Shel Silverstein
35.) “Sleeping is no mean art: for its sake one must stay awake all day.”- Friedrich Nietzsche

36.) “The best reason for having dreams is that in dreams no reasons are necessary.”- Ashleigh Brilliant
37.) “I have always been amazed at the way an ordinary observer lends so much more credence and attaches so much more importance to waking events than to those occurring in dreams…. Man… is above all the plaything of his memory.”- Andre Breton
38.) “A dream is a microscope through which we look at the hidden occurrences in our soul.”- Erich Fromm
39.) “Even thus last night, and two nights more I lay, And could not win thee, Sleep, by any stealth: So do not let me wear to-night away. Without thee what is all the morning’s wealth? Come, blessed barrier between day and day, Dear mother of fresh thoughts and joyous health!”- William Wordsworth
40.) “We are not only less reasonable and less decent in our dreams… we are also more intelligent, wiser, and capable of better judgment when we are asleep than when we are awake.”- Erich Fromm
41.) “For a dreamer, night’s the only time of day.”- Newsies
42.) “Sleep that knits up the raveled sleave of care, The death of each day’s life, sore labour’s bath Balm of hurt minds, great nature’s second course, Chief nourisher in life’s feast.”- William Shakespeare, Macbeth
43.) “Those who have compared our life to a dream were right…. We sleeping wake, and waking sleep.”- Michel de Montaigne
