When Sonny Liston’s dead body was discovered in a Las Vegas bedroom it was already decomposing. His death has never been satisfactorily explained, was he a victim of a random attack, the wrong end of a mob hit or self-imposed drugs overdose. The mystery and Liston’s dark reputation has calcified with time. It is impossible to pick up a book on the history of boxing without Liston dominating the list of fearsome and lawless champions.

What is not in doubt was that Sonny Liston was the most feared heavyweight of a golden era. He was an unreformed street robber, a jailed felon and brute of man who only took up boxing in a penitentiary in Missouri. Liston came to personify the macabre criminality of the ghetto and in a now infamous quote, the Village Voice critic Joe Flaherty once described him as “a blatant mother in a fucker’s game.”

The history of boxing will always contest that Sonny Liston paved the way for Muhammad Ali when he threw a title fight against the then Cassius Clay to satisfy a mafia fix and deliver fast money to the mob. He is now seen as the summit of boxing corruption and the dark side of African-American street life, but what few have ever ruminated on is Sonny Liston’s thoughts on Scotland and his brief transformative experience in ‘Bella Caledonia’.

Liston came to Scotland briefly in 1963. It was a short but hugely memorable visit where he struck up many friendships and was pursued daily by the nascent paparazzi of the day, drinking in Glasgow bars, sampling whisky from distillery vats and most spectacularly of all taking to streets in a gigantic kilt requisitioned form a retired drum major. He had come as part of a boxing exhibition and fought on the under-card of a British title fight at Paisley Ice Rink where Scottish flyweight Walter McGowan defended his Commonwealth title against the diminutive Jamaican Killer Salomon. Liston stole the show by lifting both boxers aloft in either arm, still dressed outrageously in full highland dress and swearing allegiance to the McBeth clan tartan.

One moment that enthralled the Scottish media was when Liston, a rock-hard black man kissed the blonde majorette of the Braemar Girl Pipers, a kiss deemed illegal or immoral in the southern states of Liston’s childhood.

Liston fell in love with Scotland and described it as the friendliest place on earth comparing it unfavorably to his native America where he was reviled as a criminal and where he had been the victim of savage racism, as the child of a sharecropping family of thirteen children in Arkansas. “I am warm here,” he told the Scottish press-pack, “because I am among warm people and I feel that and react to it. When I return to the United States I will be cold again, for the people there are cold to me now and have treated me badly in the past.”

Liston’s hatred of America was in part stoked by the civil rights disputes of the era and the institutionalized racism of the deep south but it went beyond race. When he won the heavyweight championship of the world, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Peoples (NAACP) the most powerful black organization of the era sided with the incumbent champion Floyd Patterson characterizing him as a gentle and articulate black man, and casting Liston as a charmless hoodlum and convicted robber. He had been rejected publicly by his own people.

Sonny Liston’s kilt was promotional schtick and his attempts to play the bagpipes in a Glasgow street were woeful but there is little doubt that Scotland connected with him in ways that his native America did not. He had grown up an obsessive fan of old school R&B music, trained to Jimmy Forrest’s ‘Night Train’ and liked to sip J&B whiskey listening to Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Loch Lomond’, and arrived with a bizarre notion that Scotland was a land of wonder. Paradoxically, his family could trace its tangled and illiterate roots back to slavery and to a Scottish farmer Martin Liston who owned slaves in Choctaw County, Mississippi.

Liston love for Scotland was not short-lived. On his return to the USA he looked into gaining Scottish citizenship (although no such independent identity existed) and tried to adopt Peter (Petie) Keenan Jr. the son of the Scottish promoter, convincing the boy’s parents to allow the boy to travel to Las Vegas to spend Christmas with the childless Liston and his wife in Denver. The young Keenan to America to be treated like their own son, lavished with Christmas gifts and met the legendary Joe Louis who by then was a down and out heroin addict.

Liston arrived in a Scotland where ignorance and racism were just beneath the surface and to a city scarred by its own local pathologies. The Bible John murders were yet to happen but Ian Brady had just left Shawlands Academy and moved south to Manchester where he had committed the first of the Moors Murders. But darkness was easily outshone by a solidarity of well being and a willingness to be open to visitors. Although the myth of Scottish friendliness can be sentimentalized there is no question that Liston felt something special that he had not experienced before in a brutal life at the savage end of violent sport – it was a warmth and humanity.

We have precious few studies of how humanity works collectively but it was there again on the streets of Glasgow during the Commonwealth Games and in the aftermath of the horrendous tragedies at Clutha Vaults and George Square. We only casually understand this lived and welcoming common-weal a power that neither de-industrialization nor austerity has successfully chased away. Apart from fine words from agencies like VisitScotland there has never been a comprehensive audit of Scotland’s deeper values, those underlying characteristics which are not measurable by the price of oil, or by the board of Standard Life. They are the standards of life frequently forgotten when raw politics come into play.

For one week in 1963 the most dangerous and hated man in the world felt he had found his home. When he finally left Scotland, by his own admission he left a better person, determined to return. Sadly, Liston never returned and instead was dragged deeper into the heartless gangsterism of Las Vegas where he eventually died, alone.

Mike Tyson’s Training Routine Part One

First, you must understand that the grand scheme was all planned by the genius of the sweet science: Cus D’Amato.

Cus had worked with so many fighters that, by the time he met Mike Tyson, his formula for making champions, particularly heavyweight champions, was already perfected.  All Cus needed was a dedicated student who would take in his every word.  Mike was the gifted boy with the spark of interest.  As a pudgy, 13-year old, Mike was muscular and weighed nearly 200 pounds.  Once he met Cus his whole life changed and he became an exemplary student of the art and craft of boxing.

While serving time at the Tryon School for Boys, Mike began dabbling with weights. Blessed with extraordinary genetics, he used his athletic prowess for his own amusement. Even as a teenager, without any formal training, Mike was already bench pressing over 200 pounds.

THE TRAINING SCHEDULE

I think most of us know how the Catskill saga panned out, but very few people are familiar with the training regimen that went on in the gym at 422 Main Street or in the big white house on Hidden Drive.  Beginning four or five weeks before a fight, Mike would train 50-60 hours a week, working six days a week. He would spar 200 plus rounds without head gear because Cus believed that headgear gave the fighter a false sense of security. Mike would drop about 15-20 pounds during training camp.

PUNCHING AND HEAVY BAG WORK

Cus used to claim that “there is no such thing as a natural puncher. There is a natural aptitude for punching and that is different. Nobody is born the best. You have to practice and train to become the best.”  Back in the 80’s, Mike explained that his punching power came from nothing more than heavy bag work, noting how it “works your strength through the hips.” Despite doing shrugs with a barbell, Mike said that lifting weights has about as much resemblance to punching as “cheesecake.”

Cus realized that, due to Tyson’s style, he needed to have incredible punching power in both hands.  So Cus put Mike on a 300 pound bag, very heavy for a 13 year old, and told him to work his right and left. By the age of 18, Tyson was expertly using both of his hands to hammer bags that most other fighters would walk away from, save Marciano.

Cus knew Marciano trained using this technique and was quick to get Mike on the same routine! Eventually, Cus had Mike move on to punching water bags. While Cus felt this change was important because it would protect Mike’s hands, Mike preferred the water bags because “it feels like hitting a real person.”  Cus also ordered Tyson to jog three miles with 50 pounds on his back because he didn’t want Mike growing any taller, literally trying to stunt his growth. Cus wanted his Sonny Liston!

MIKE’S DIET

Cus was way ahead of his time with the emphasis he placed on diet and nutrition during training. Back in the 60’s, when he was training Buster Mathis, Cus had developed a steady diet plan which he put Mike on.

The diet called for a lot of protein, carbs, fruit juices, tiger’s milk, protein shakes, and vitamins. Although Camille, Cus’ live-in housekeeper, cooked an assortment of meals, in addition to the ubiquitous steak & pasta, she still caught Mike sneaking a sugary mid-night snack here and there.

Though Mike loved his ice cream, he was usually caught toting around a bowl of Captain Crunch. And even though he trained like a beast mentally and physically, Mike was always cheating; he was after all, human.

CALISTHENIC ROUTINE

200 sit-ups, 50 dips, 50 push-ups & 50 shrugs with weight – 10 times throughout a day, six days a week.

DAILY SCHEDULE AT TRAININIG CAMP(FOUR TO FIVE WEEKS BEFORE A FIGHT)

4:00 a.m.: get up and go for a three to five mile jog.

6:00 a.m.: come back home, shower, and go back to bed.

10:00 a.m.: wake up and eat breakfast (Oatmeal with fruit, OJ, and vitamins, washed down with a protein shake.)

12pm:  ten rounds of sparring and three sets of Calisthenics.

2pm: lunch (carbs, protein, veggies, and water.)

3pm: another four to six rounds of sparring, bag work, slip bag, jump rope, Willie bag, focus mits, and speed bag (Cus was never fond of the speed bag) and 60 minutes on the stationary bike.  Three more sets of Calisthenics.

5pm: Four more sets of the same calisthenic routine and then slow shadow boxing or focusing on ONE technique, in order to master the mechanics.

7pm: another balanced meal, usually prepared by Steve Lott.

8pm: a light 30 minutes on the exercise bike for recovery purposes only. NO RESISTANCE.

9pm: watch TV or study fight films and then go to bed.

Cumulative reps for the day = 2000 decline sit-ups, 500 bench dips, 500 push-ups, 500 shrugs with a 30 kg barbell, and ten minutes of neck exercises in the ring.

Cumulative reps from the start of training until the fight: up to 60,000 decline sit-ups, 15,000 bench dips, 15,000 push-ups, 15,000 shrugs, and five hours of neck exercises.

On top of stretching his neck in the ring everyday, Mike would also stretch his upper and lower body, (Cus wanted Ballistic Stretching) mainly performing plows, spread eagle, hurdler’s stretch, butterfly, as well as various stretches for the upper body.

A DAY OF REST

Mike took Sunday’s off.  Cus believed in an active rest and lots of sleep.  On his days off, Mike would do extra chores around the house, watch old fight films from Jim Jacob’s collection with Cus, play with his pigeons, and sometimes sneak back to his old neighborhood in Brooklyn.

Only negative repercussions came from those trips, Cus and Jose would have travel to the city to find Mike regularly. They were not always successful. Most of the reports you read on the internet are true, but some of the details have been misconstrued and altered slightly.

Mike told Ian Durke, a Sky commentator, about his workout regime when he visited England to watch a Frank Bruno fight in March 1987. Durke told Mike that Bruno trained like a bodybuilder.

Mike’s opinion on the matter was that floor exercises and natural body weight exercises worked better for the fighter.  Cus has repeatedly told Mike that weights slow you down, that he needs more speed, because “Speed Kills!”  Earlier in his career Cus trained Jose Torres to throw a 5 punch combination in two fifths of a second.

There was only one man, besides Cus, able to time Jose’s punches and obviously proved to be true.  Mike was just as fast, for a heavyweight, throwing a four-punch combo in under a second.  This was part of the Peek-a-Boo style, speed.  Later in Mike’s life he did more traditional weight training.

Remember, “Boxing is a contest of character and ingenuity. The boxer with more will, determination, desire, and intelligence is always the one who comes out the victor.”  It’s not all about training –Cus

April 18, 2018 -- The International Songwriting Competition (ISC is pleased to announce its 2017 winners. Created in 2002, ISC is widely recognized as the most prestigious and respected songwriting competition in the world and received more than16,000 entries from almost 140 countries. Prizes include more than $175,000 in cash and merchandise.

The Grand Prize winners this year are Nicholas Miller (better known as Illenium), Annika Wells, Kate Morgan, and Michael Biancaniello for the song “Crawl Outta Love Ft. Annika Wells." The Grand Prize consists of $25,000 in cash (USD) and over $35,000 in additional prizes.

Winners hail from all over the world (61% of this year’s winners come from outside the USA) and range from talented amateurs to seasoned songwriting veterans. The 23 categories include all genres of contemporary music, from Rock to Pop to Country to R&B/Hip-Hop and more.

Canadian songwriters fared extremely well in ISC, garnering four First Places and three Third Places. Canadian winners also received 39 Honorable Mentions.

“This marks the first time in the competition’s history that Canadian songwriters have scored four First Places in categories,” says Candace Avery, ISC Founder and Director. “It takes a lot of dedication and hard work to write great songs, and ISC is honored to throw the spotlight on these talented Canadian songwriters and their achievements.”

Co-written songs have been recorded by artists including JJ Heller, Amy Sky, Brian Doerksen and Luke McMaster among others. Her most recent album, Potter & Clay, was nominated for a Juno Award, a Western Canadian Music Award, and several Covenant Awards. Two of her songs earned songwriting trophies at the Covenant Awards this year.

“Untouchable“ – Dylan Edward Roberts (King Dylan) Calgary, AB, Canada – Music Video

The winner of the Music Video category for his stop-motion animation video of the song “Untouchable,” King Dylan (the King didn't give himself that name - it was written in his high school yearbook) is best described as if Blink 182 had a lovechild with Eminem and Lady Gaga's backup dancers. This one-man machine has performed live for thousands across Canada and released a handful of albums and music videos. Previously he played bass guitar in the hard Rock band Broken Ride (Regional Radio Star winners 2013), performed in and produced the hip hop group The DC Show, and played piano for the band Lost In Film at CMW 2014. Dylan has also just finished a new full-length album featuring "Untouchable" and eleven other hard-hitting tracks. The award-winning video utilized over 4,000 photos of legos taken over the course of 450+ hours.
