SMASH THE MUSEUM, I NEED OXYGEN Elisa Chavez

exhibit 1.  My dad texts:  IS CRIME REALLY UP IN SEATTLE?  I send him a picture of the garden at Cal Anderson's heart. Black Lives Memorial. NO, I say. It felt like proof to me. Diversifying  in the face of scarcity. Transubstantiating the earth into wafers. 

exhibit 2. The oregon grape, qʷəbqʷəbčac  (qweb-qweb-chadth),  mahonia aquifolium, is "beloved by hummingbirds and bees."  I bring coffee to tired throats,  I bring post-it notes and pens; call me pollinator. Black and gold, buzzing corona.  Feathered shoulders. Busy, busy. 

exhibit 3.  Commenting Seattle says, Get rid of that weed patch, then the road mural on Pine. It's eating up the space we need for cars. Spare me your tree museum.  Your noblesse oblige, your death printed in triplicate. This feels like the right time to say  that I personally don't get the Mona Lisa. Kids' art I understand: color anarchy,  eyes wilding like coals in construction paper. Words I understand. I always stop for messages on telephone poles and building corners: "Wanted: the squirrel who stole my bagel"; "when I helped build this place  a worker fell down the elevator shaft and died." The Venus de Milo, I understand: armless, beautiful. Found in a farmer's field, where his habits of sowing and upturning resurrected the goddess from the earth. This is to say that not all beauty will make itself obvious to you.

exhibit 4. I watch my best friend pick blackberries straight from the bush by I-5. She swallows, no fear. I'm too scared to eat without permission, but I've thought of smoke and the tart juice ever since.  I read blackberries grow especially well  on the sites of old house fires.  I hope if I have to, I'll do the same.

exhibit 5. In the garden, we hors d'oeuvre  like it's a birthday party. We sing, we town hall, we fucking juggle. A man falls; like bees, we shift to give him space.  Like bees, the gardeners tend. Someone says, "I have narcan" and they get him back to blooming. Straggling, maybe. Pretty, maybe not. But alive.

exhibit 6. Ms. Lyles, this one's for you. For your children, who I pray will learn the story of a city that did better. Grief is a seed. It waits through winter, sprouts between the ribs like sidewalk cracks and puts reminders in your lungs. It's okay to breathe your grief. It's okay to speak it. Our grief is a story committed to dirt. We just hope something good will grow.

Sherwood, Joan Harrison, Philip MacDonald, Michael Hogan, based on a novel by Daphne Du Maurier. Cinematography: George Barnes. Art direction: Lyle R. Wheeler, William Cameron Menzies. Music: Franz Waxman. Rebecca is a very good movie. Would it have been a better one if Alfred Hitchcock, directing his first American film, had been left alone by the producer, David O. Selznick, an incurable micromanager? That's the question that lingers, especially since Hitchcock later expressed some dissatisfaction with the film. It does mostly lack the director's sense of humor, except  in the scene in which the horrid Mrs. Van Hopper (Florence Bates) snuffs a cigarette in a jar of cold cream, a gag Hitchcock liked so much that he used it again 15 years later in To Catch a Thief, in which the substitute ashtray is a fried egg. The differences between Hitchcock and Selznick largely lay in the realm of editing, in which Selznick loved to dabble, insisting that scenes be shot from various camera angles to give him latitude in the editing room. Hitchcock was a famous storyboarder, working out scenes and planning camera setups well in advance of the actual shooting -- "editing in the camera," as it's usually called. The story would probably also have been very different in the Hitchcock version: According to one source, the original version suggested by Hitchcock began on shipboard, with various people being seasick. Selznick, however, liked to stick closely to the novels on which he based his films: The opening title, for example, refers to the movie as a "picturization" of Daphne Du Maurier's bestseller. (This was doubtless a comfort to Du Maurier, who hated Hitchcock's version of her novel Jamaica Inn (1939) -- but then so did Hitchcock, and both of them were right to do so.) The glory of Rebecca lies mostly in its performances. Although Laurence Olivier never makes Maxim de Winter a fully credible character -- I think he felt he was slumming, doing the film only to be near Vivien Leigh, and disgusted when Selznick didn't cast her as the second Mrs. de Winter -- he was always a watchable actor, even when he wasn't doing a great job of it. Joan Fontaine is almost perfect in her role, making credible the crucial character switch, when she stops being shy and stands up to Mrs. Danvers. And Hitchcock must have loved working with the gaggle of British character actors who had flocked to Hollywood and populate all the supporting roles.

Fue director musical de Tina Turner y arregló y tocó en el tema ‘Private dancer’. BEHOLD, THE BRIDEGROOM

1927

Behold, the Bridegroom is a three-act play by George Kelly. It was originally produced by Rosalie Stewart and directed by Mr. Kelly. It starred Judith Anderson. 

Producer Rosalie Stewart had to arrange for the loan of Anderson with her manager, David Belasco. Rehearsals began the first week in November 1927.

The play takes place at the Lyle Estate at Shadow Brook, just beyond the city line.

Antoinette Lyle, a wealthy, high-living young woman begins to have second thoughts about her wanton ways when she meets a sensitive young man who intrigues her. By the time they meet again, she has fallen seriously ill.

The title is found in the Bible.  

“...and in the middle of the night a cry was made, Behold, the bridegroom comes; go forth to meet him!” ~ MATTHEW 25:6

Kelly originally considered calling the play Till the Day of Her Death, which is also Biblical. 

“....As to Michal, daughter of Saul, she had no child till the day of her death.” ~ 2 SAMUEL 6:23

George Kelly (1887-1974) was a prolific playwright who was also Grace Kelly’s uncle. He was the author of Reflected Glory, The Show Off, The Torchbearers, and Craig’s Wife, among others.

Judith Anderson (1897-1992) was an Australian actress who had a successful career in stage, film and television. She won two Emmy Awards and a Tony Award and was also nominated for a Grammy Award and an Academy Award. In 1960 she was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II.

The play opened at the Apollo Theatre on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City on November 28, 1927. 

With two weeks between The Great Wooden and the Great White Ways, the play polished further at Cort-Jamaica Theatre in Brooklyn. 

Behold, the Bridegroom opened on Broadway on December 26th at the Cort Theatre (now the James Earl Jones Theatre). 

The night opened on what has been called ‘the busiest night in Broadway history’, sharing attention with 10 (!) other plays having their first performances. This was later blamed for the play’s short run. Other Broadway plays debuting on Boxing Day 1927 include:

“Fannie Hurst, the popular Manhattan writer of novels, stories, and plays, is believed to have set a precedent recommended to vainer and more self-conscious playwrights. The other night her new comedy ‘It Is to Laugh,’ opened. Between acts cries of 'Author!' went up. Looking about the theater, it was found she could not be located. An usher, dispatched to solve the mystery, returned with a report that she was down street, attending George Kelly's new play, ‘Behold, the Bridegroom' which, say old-timers, is something quite new under the sun.” ~ GILBERT SWAN

During the month of December 1927, Broadway hosted 17 plays and musicals.

It moved to the Majestic Theatre in February 1928. It closed in March after 88 performances. After Broadway, the play, headed by Anderson, moved to the Shubert in Boston, playing there through the end of March 1928.  

The play’s ambiguous, somewhat mystical ending was also blamed for its short stay on the Rialto.  

The play was chosen by Burns Mantle to be published in his Best Plays of 1927 collection. It was also short-listed for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. 

In 1988, the play was revived off-off-Broadway on 42nd Street by the Heritage Theatre Company.
