A matter of ease

I feel why wrap skirts are a fairly common feature of Indian, Chinese, Philippine, Indonesian and Singaporean folk clothing is that not only are they this easy to make (the only tricky part is to secure them around you), but they’re easy to move about in. Compare this to historical western women’s clothing, which sometimes required petticoats and hoopskirts to complete the look.

Even today, it’s still a feature of some folk costumes. Though it could be argued that there are parts of hanfu that are complicated to make, the Baidiequn (well my attempts at one) isn’t that hard to make really. You just have to pleat the middle part of the skirt and you’re done after using two ribbons or sashes to add to the skirt, well I usually use one considering what my father bought.

But the thing with wrap skirts is that they’re really not that hard to make, especially once you get the hang of it and they’re easy to make completely on my own. They’re pretty comfy and not that complicated to make, especially when it comes to some Han garments.
