Cary Grant and Marlene Dietrich in Blonde Venus (Josef von Sternberg, 1932) Cast: Marlene Dietrich, Herbert Marshall, Cary Grant, Dickie Moore, Gene Morgan, Rita La Roy, Robert Emmett O'Connor, Sidney Toler, Morgan Wallace, Sterling Holloway, Hattie McDaniel. Screenplay: Jules Furthman, S.K. Lauren, Josef von Sternberg. Cinematography: Bert Glennon. Art direction: Wiard Ihnen. Film editing: Josef von Sternberg, Costume design: Travis Banton. Music: W. Franke Harling, John Leipold, Paul Marquardt, Oscar Potoker. At once fascinating and perfectly ridiculous, Josef von Sternberg's Blonde Venus is a domestic melodrama with music and a bit of road movie thrown in. For most viewers it's chiefly of interest as an opportunity to see Cary Grant before the familiar "Cary Grant" persona had fully developed. He's a little rough around the edges still, slipping from an attempt at a fully American accent back into whatever his particular blend of British and American accent is, and his gift for looking faintly amused at absurd or difficult situations -- with which he's often confronted in Blond Venus -- hasn't quite emerged yet. At this stage of his career, he was little more than a useful leading man -- or second lead, in this film -- on the order of a John Lodge or a John Boles, there to show off the real star of the film, like Mae West in I'm No Angel (Wesley Ruggles, 1933) or Loretta Young in Born to Be Bad (Lowell Sherman, 1934) or Jean Harlow in Suzy (George Fitzmaurice, 1936). Or, of course, Marlene Dietrich, who is the reason Blonde Venus was made at all. Sternberg's obsession with Dietrich is on full display here as he crafts another story about a man willing to sacrifice his own love to make a woman in love with another man happy -- the role played by Adolphe Menjou in Morocco (1930) and here played by Grant, whose Nick Townsend, a rich playboy (he's identified as a "politician" in the screenplay, but we never see him either run for office or perform the duties of one), who gives up Dietrich's Helen Faraday twice: both times to let her return to her husband, Ned, played a little stodgily by Herbert Marshall. Of course, the real man in Helen's life is her son, Johnny, played by the terminally cute Dickie Moore. I like the way Sternberg both exploits and undercuts Moore's cuteness, as in the scene in which Johnny wears a hideous Halloween mask on the side of his head that's usually facing the camera. But then the whole film is full of Sternbergian tricks, such as the two amazing narrative jump cuts. The film opens with the meeting of Helen and Ned as he and some other hikers come upon her as she's swimming nude in a pond with her fellow chorus girls. She sends him away, though he discovers where she's performing before he goes. Cut from the girls splashing in the pond to Johnny splashing in a tub as Helen bathes him. Sternberg and his screenwriters omit what might have been a movie in itself: the second encounter of Helen and Ned, their courtship and marriage. Similarly, after much ado has reduced Helen to poverty and implied prostitution, there's a scene in which she gives a fellow derelict the $1500 Ned has paid her off with and goes off to, we assume, commit suicide -- or "make a hole in the water," as she has put it. Cut to a shot of an expanse of water, but then to a montage which tells us that Helen has resumed her career as a cabaret performer and has become the toast of Paris. Again, stuff that might have been almost an entire movie on its own has been (fortunately) elided. If Sternberg's tricks had been applied to a story that made more sense to start with, Blonde Venus might have been something of a classic. Instead, it's an extraordinary but often entertaining mess.

Mano Solo: La Marmaille Nue (1993). This is a pleasant stand-alone cd that I picked up in Montreal back in 1994. The music is frisky – a perfect combination of Kurt Weill & Jacques Brel with a dash of the musical Cabaret – sort of what Rufus Wainwright was aiming for 🙂 Songs about love, beer & man’s indifference to man. A great introduction to French music.
Then there’s…

i feel like ive never talked about my favourite/comfort nola episodes so here we go (by the favourite and comfort both wildly intersect and are two vastly different categories in some cases):
5x21 Trust Me: this is literally my favourite episode in the whole run of NOLA thus far and it’s one of my comfort episodes. i could literally word for word over the episode quote to you most of it. there’s just something about that episode. i personally relate to tammy and some of what she went through at the hands of an emotionally abusive manipulator so her emotions in this episode feel so real. i love the pacing too, there’s enough fast paced parts of the case to keep everyone entranced but enough ‘human’ parts to flesh out the characters.
5x22 Chaos Theory: another comfort and favourite of mine. i adore the tabastian scenes, they’re so warm and it has one of my favourite tammy lines in it “that’s what we do, we find order in the chaos.” i also love seeing sabastain work and the little end scene with him at home when tammy has cooked for him
6x11 Waiting for Monroe: this one is purely comfort. i have qualms with the overt glorification of the police in this episode and a blue lives matter flag in the background, but my critical opinion on nola and cops is another post. however the plot line with gregorio and her struggling to come out?? something else i deeply relate to and i watch it to feel seen honestly and it makes me feel less alone when i do feel alone. and i love the plot line with the assassin as well, it’s right up my alley and easy to escape into
6x20: predators: this one is a favourite. i love hannah’s power in this episode and her triumph at the end. plain and simple. i cry of happiness every single time
6x17: biased: another favourite. this one is heavy and note my opinion on this comes from a white perspective so what i say doesn’t matter as much as a bipoc’s opinion on this episode and it’s content. that being said, i thought this episode was realistic about the injustices in the system and addressed systemic racism as well as a cop show can. some of the scenes were so well done and intense. i started crying when loretta is listing the names of real life victims to holloway. and i don’t know i feel that episode was important despite the fact that it did have flaws.
4x16 treasure hunt: this is a comfort episode for me; i just love the tabastain interaction here and the whole theme of like a scavenger hunt
and shout out to any khourgorio moment and specifically the one scene where tammy says “two strikes im gay and i hate your guts”

books i read in 2019
this year i read a total of 109 books. i lost track of some things i read and didn’t list them on goodreads, so the actual total is probably higher than my official reading challenge number. i’ve added at least a couple i can distinctly remember reading as they were christmassy novellas.
this year i leaned more heavily into reading romance of all types. i’ve found it easier to read books with a guaranteed happily ever after this year, and i’ve not had much enjoyment in my other type of common read which is a murder mystery/thriller. as the year ended though i did find i was reading a wider variety of books, which possibly is because i now work for a library and i can’t seem to help myself from taking books home.
i’m hoping to continue reading a bigger variety of books in 2020, but i’m also happy to continue down my romance route. i’ve decided to set my challenge at 30 books this year to feel a bigger sense of achievement, as for the last two years i’ve set it at 1 and whilst this obviously softened the pressure on me to read quickly i’ve definitely felt it less of a ‘challenge’. i’m confident i’ll be able to get to 30 fairly quickly.
rereads are italicised, books i really enjoyed are bolded, and my standout read of the year is both.

Over in Glimmerbrook, a similar meeting was taking place at Holloway Close, Aurelius Storm calling the meeting. Like Loki he stood at the head of the table, the Glimmerbrook families seated before him. There was a hum of chatter, punctuated by Vera’s sobs. She sat at the head of the table opposite him and he couldn’t help but look at her in pity.
“If I could have everyone’s attention please” Aurelius started.
The room fell silent, Vera’s sobs continuing in the background.
“I’ve called this meeting to discuss the terrible accident which took place yesterday. I will not upset everyone here by going into it but we cannot ignore what has happened.”
Aurelius took a deep breath, knowing he had to be strong for everyone but it was hard, he hated what had happened and couldn’t believe history was repeating itself.
“Vera, as you know, The Realm has decided to banish you for what has happened. I know….I know it was an accident but we must comply with their rules. I’m so sorry.”
Vera burst into a fresh stream of tears, both her Father and Mother also crying at the table. River felt sick just looking at her. He felt terribly sorry for her, knowing it easily could have been any of them which duelled Nix and ended up in the same position.
“I have also received word that Loki Blackwood has incited revenge against us. I have reported this straight to The Realm who will be looking into it but please be on your guard against them. We know how angry those families can get and I don’t want anyone hurt as a result of it. Now does anyone have any questions.”
The families remained silent as Aurelius dismissed them. River sat motionless at the table, his every thought coming back to Loretta. How would he ever see her now? All of the students had been sent home from Vallerden indefinitely and now it was going to be near impossible to see her. His heart sank in his chest but he knew he would do anything to see her.

We interrupt our regular programming to remember #florianschneider of the legendary electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk. I have been around long enough to remember hearing this music for the first time and thinking “I’ve never heard anything like this... and I like what I hear!” May all of you be so fortunate to have similar “ah ha” moments in your life! This song is an apparently deleted mashup from YouTube of Kraftwerk’s The Model & Black Box’s Ride on Time with incredible but uncredited vocal by Loretta Holloway. #kraftwerk #lorettaholloway #ripflorianschneider https://www.instagram.com/p/CAjDvfbnif_/?igshid=hh0koolxucvc
