Thursday, July 23: Wolf Spider, “Blind Faith”

Drifting in the Sullen Sea was a record out of time by any measure: from the crying old man on the cover art to the technical thrash that Poland’s Wolf Spider favored to the fact that the band chose to call themselves Wolf Spider, this record didn’t fit with everything else going on in 1991. And “Blind Faith” bore this out, as not many bands besides Mekong Delta (who frontman Leszek Szpigiel would briefly join 16 years later) were mixing classic thrash with progressive virtuosity at the time. The track was dynamic and multi-faceted, mixing fast parts and blastbeats with slower and more complex bits, and was another noteworthy release from Under One Flag. Unfortunately, the times were not in Wolf Spider’s favor as Drifting in the Sullen Sea came out as the world was tiring of thrash in general, and wasn’t yet ready for technical thrash. Still, “Blind Faith” set the stage for what would eventually become a major subgenre.
