A macchiato is this! A macchiato is that!
It's both. Just include the qualifier.
Listen... a 'traditional' macchiato is an espresso macchiato. That is espresso 'marked' with a dot of milk.
A latte macchiato is an upside-down latte. It is steamed milk first, then 'marked' with an espresso.
A caramel macchiato is a latte macchiato with vanilla syrup in the milk and caramel syrup on top.
If someone mentions a macchiato without clarification, it really just depends on whether they're talking about an espresso macchiato or a latte macchiato. Just ask them. A traditional macchiato is the default in small/specialty coffee shops, and latte macchiatos are obviously the default in Starbucks.
A person who uses 'macchiato' to mean a latte macchiato is not inherently wrong. Do not shame them, just ask if they meant a latte macchiato or an espresso macchiato. Words change with time! Don't be elitist just because you prefer the older version!
tl;dr don't shame people for using macchiato for the variant that you don't prefer.
(Especially since even 'traditional' macchiatos only date back to the 1980s.)
If you want a longer explanation, this person on YouTube posted a video today (much kinder than my off-the-cuff complaint) that reminded me of the topic.
