Sociopath Traveler (Part 2)
After the first game, the 2023 sequel Octopath Traveler II and the 2020 spinoff Champions of the Continent provided a few more sociopaths to the roster. Not nearly as many as in the first game, but they were still incredibly notable.

What I wanted: Making fic for friend focus time
What I got: Me making funny concept yesterday into a short fic
Anyways, have a quick drabble where Hikari just decides to use lightning on Mugen.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hikari knew that this whole thing was done to humiliate him. He knew the fight was scripted to favor Mugen. After all, Mugen was always more skilled with combat, both due to natural talent and experience. Having Hikari fight him for a “quick spar” was just an excuse to have the soldiers witness how their strengths differ from each other.
Luckily though, Hikari has several advantages. The first advantage being that Hikari knows more than just the sword and has been dabbling into magical arts, practicing every day and making sure his skills were as good as they were with the sword. He isn’t as good as Osvald yet but he is good enough that several traveling Scholars praised him for his progress and asked who his teacher was.
The second advantage is that Mugen still thinks Hikari views him with admiration and awe, meaning he would think Hikari is viewing this as a friendly spar and not something meant to humiliate him. A year ago, he would have believed that this was a friendly spar but now…
“You don’t owe people your love and care when they don’t return it. Don’t waste your energy on those who will just take advantage of you, Hikari. You deserve better. You deserve so much better.”
He knows better now. Mugen isn’t going to see him as his equal, or at the very least, his sibling. He’s going to view him as an ant that needs to be crushed. Hikari shouldn’t go and hold on to the belief that his family here will care for him. At the very least though, he has his mother, and every few weeks he can visit his real family at Conning Creek.
Now though, he has to, as the soldiers would sometimes say, “one-up” his brother.
“Raise your weapon brother,” said Hikari.
“Let us see who comes out on top then,” said Mugen.
Immediately the battle began with Mugen bringing his sword down to where Hikari was standing. Quickly, he dodges it and takes a deep breath.
“Remember, analyze your opponents before you strike. That’s a basic in battling and in scholarly pursuits. We scholars may have the gift of commanding the elements but that’s useless if we always assume that our opponents will be susceptible to the ones we command.”
Spears and lightning. Those were the two things Hikari noticed Mugen consistently having trouble against. And luckily for him he has skill with both of those things.
Though…considering how much stronger Mugen is, his spearwork probably won’t do much against his brother.
Lightning magic however, that can work. That can work but how much power exactly? He doubts that a simple strike would do. No, if he wants to win then he has to put all his effort into it.
He hasn’t quite practiced the more advanced spells with Osvald but he has been reading ahead, and he has been practicing with the soldiers that spar with him. The real challenge is just making sure he doesn’t expend his energy in the process of casting it. If he lets that happen then he leaves himself open and in the process, would give Mugen an easy victory.
Another strike against Hikari and again, Hikari dodges. The strikes are getting faster now and though Hikari is nimble and much smaller than Mugen, he can’t dodge forever, and his brother knew that.
Now then, he has to do this fast.
He takes a step back. “I summon, Alephan, the Scholarking!” Immediately, he feels the elements course through him, making him aware of all that there is and all that he can summon.
He takes a deep breath and pours all his energy into the spell “The Sky Royals!”
And as commanded, the sky opens up and brings down a myriad of lightning and sparks onto his brother.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“So,” says Osvald. “I heard that you called for Alephan’s knowledge and brought down lightning on your brother.”
Sheepishly, Hikari nods. He’s here much earlier than he should be but his father insisted on going early to have Osvald teach him proper control and restraint over the elements. A fair request, considering that his “light show”, as some of the soldiers called it, went and caused several small fires within the training grounds.
Osvald nods. “Good. It means you’re reading ahead.”
Hikari blinks. “Aren’t you mad?” he asks.
“Why would I be mad? You wanted to learn more so you read ahead of time, and you were excited to put your skills into practice so you started using them in places where practice is acceptable.”
Again, Hikari blinks. “Oh.”
“That doesn’t mean that what you did was smart though. You should first do that type of magic in a controlled environment before placing it into practice. At the very least though, we now know what you have trouble on.”
He picks up a leaf. “Now then, the new lesson today is basic control. You managed to impressively use a high-level lightning skill but that’s useless if you can’t control where it’s supposed to strike.” In the same hand, he summons a small flame, slowly burning the leaf away. “We’re going to start with this. Okay?”
Hikari nods.

Today's "would he say that"/"what would it take for him to say that": is Hikari finding out Castti was going to fight a sand lion alone when he (headcanon) knows what they are and even has a little experience with how dangerous they are enough to get him worried-mad, and how much would he let himself say especially when he's sleep deprived

Hikari's Mother
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So another thing I noticed is that in the Japanese script they gave Hikari's Mother, Kura, a title before her name. Similar to that of Mugen, Ritsu, Rou, etc. However in the English script they decided to not put it in. I can only guess a few reasons as to why, but nevertheless that's how they're presenting it.
If you're wondering what Kura's title is, it's sokushitsu (側室) which translates to [concubine] according to jisho.org!
Tumblr media
So yeah, Kura's role in the Ku royal palace is the king's own concubine. This sort of helps paint a slightly bigger picture about Hikari's family dynamics with the context given in the Japanese script.
I wonder if they did keep the title in other languages though?

When Mugen Ku becomes the nation of Ku's head of state, he very much accomplishes this feat via conspiring with the country's top military figures.
...Meaning he does in fact perform a Ku d'état.

Everything We Know About the Governance of Solistia
While it's not something that's particularly relevant to the story of Octopath 2, we don't really get to learn much about how the different nations/territories of Solistia are actually governed. There's precious little to actually go off of in-game, but I figured I'd try to compile everything we knew, regardless. So, with that being said...
Hinoeuma
The most obvious place to start is Hinoeuma, or more specifically, Ku. Ku is considered a kingdom, ruled by a king, though I honestly feel like its overall structure is more akin to an empire (which would make more sense given that it's heavily based on Japanese culture.) We know that there are supposedly other clans and territories in the desert, but most of them were subsumed by Clan Ku during the reign of Jigo and Mugen. According to the Mercantile Manuscript, most of these territories aren't even considered part of Solistia in the first place.
The town of Sai appears to be somewhat independent, but the exact details aren't wholly clear.
Leaflands
We learn from Castti's story that Timberrain is ruled by an unnamed monarch, and I presume that this king's territory extends to the entire Leaflands. This would mean that Wellgrove and Cropdale also fall under his domain. We know that Wellgrove is ruled over by Alrond, of course, but Alrond is a noble, which likely means he serves the king of Timberrain.
Wildlands
The Wildlands are modeled after the Wild West, and seem to mostly consist of independent towns. The fact that Pap had to purchase the land where Orserush was built, however (as well as the fact Roque legally owned it in the first place), would imply that the Wildlands do fall under SOMEONE's jurisdiction. I guess they might be part of the Leaflands' kingdom, since they're the closest.
Coastlands
There are only two main towns in the Coastlands: Canalbrine and Conning Creek. I guess it's probably safe to assume that these two towns operate mostly independently, though the fact that an organized force of guards exist in Conning Creek would imply that they fall under SOMEONE'S authority. Sadly the highest-ranking person we see there is Stenvar.
I suppose it is possible that they also fall under the jurisdiction of Timberrain's royal family, since Osvald was supposedly tried at that city's courthouse. If that's true, though, that would imply the king of Timberrain controls most of the wester continent.
Toto'Haha
This one is pretty easy to figure out. It's mostly just neutral settlements run by humans or Beastlings.
Brightlands
So these lands were apparently settled by people from a dead kingdom called Delstach, though it seems like any system of monarchy has long-since been abandoned, as evidenced by the sidestory Descended from Royalty. The Nyx family evidently ruled the area at one time, but lost all power and authority for unknown reasons. Given their industrialized nature, I presume that New Delsta and Clockbank are run by mayors.
Montwise is really up in the air, as plenty of nobles seem to reside here, though we don't know of any governing body.
Crestlands
The most notable location here is probably Flameschurch, which of course is run by the Church of the Sacred Flame. To that end, I suppose that means the pontiff would technically be head of the area? Unless the town also has some sort of elder or mayor that's never mentioned, I suppose.
Merry Hills is home to a grand theater and attracts many performers, but we never get much insight as to who runs the whole affair. The biggest authority figures we see are the judges, who I doubt are in charge of running the entire town.
Winterlands
The town of Winterbloom is lead by the Glenville family, currently headed by Melia, but there are a LOT of missing pieces. Given that the role of leadership is passed down through bloodline, it sounds as though the Glenvilles are some form of nobility, if not royalty. It is possible that the town is run by a sort of chief, but it's not confirmed.
Stormhail is extremely peculiar, as control of the city seems divided between Clan Mei and the Sacred Guard. Frankly I'm still confused how Clan Mei managed to establish such a powerful position in a city on the opposite end of the world as the king they serve, but I guess it's hard to argue with the lady wielding the lightning spear.
Cape Cold appears to just be headed by a village elder.
So yeah, that's about all we know at the moment, unfortunately. Again, the details for Solistia's governance aren't REALLY important, but it would have been nice to learn more.

🤲 please captain,,. just a crumb of partikari mafia au lore
HAHAHA its mostly a mess in my mind of just various scenes and hcs i've got rolling around in there and no concrete plot or anything but hmmMHMMM
partitio is part of the yellowil/brilliante family, with some recent tension happening with papp and roque, making the family a bit more unstable than usual
hikari is part of the ku family, who have been fighting with the neighbouring areas to take over more of hinoeuma.. there's also instability within here because of the succession issue with hikari and mugen
smth smth both the yellowil and ku families aren't really Friendly with each other but not outright hostile, but someone (roque and mugen manipulating jigo probably) orders a hit on their respective family's sons (they don't know each other though) and upon arriving at the hit location, they realize immediately that they've made contact before outside of family matters (like, casually) and once it dawns on them that they're supposed to take each other out... idk its kind of a mess. like they're TRYING but once they're steps away from actually killing the other they hesitate too much and its back to square one
SMTH SMTH things go awry and the hit doesn't go off as planned and ritsu ends up interfering, sent by mugen to finish off hikari, that they both have to deal with and when the dust settles, hikari is injured and it'd be incredibly easy for partitio to take him out but. he doesn't and instead inexplicably drags them to an empty alleyway and takes care of his wounds, mentioning that "it's mighty uncouth of yer own family to be trying to do this to you" before leaving him, lest they be seen together
uhhh partitio reports his failed mission and like, roque kind of chastises him for it but ultimately lets him off, not realizing that partitio's kind of intending on sneaking off more and more to try to help out hikari, who kind of can't return back to his family due to everything happening, who has been branded as traitor.
idk gay hijinks where neither of them want to address what's happening btwn them I WROTE MORE THAN I THOUGHT BUT THAT'S P MUCH WHAT I HAVE...
vague images of partitio picking up hikari and slinging him over his back while hikari is shooting at their assailants and stuff idk HAHHGDFJKLGHFJKD

What the... Oboro's Journal?
So that tome definitely tried to hollow out and make a Shadow puppet out of someone, but this person had already hollowed himself out. It couldn't make a monster out of a man because there was already no man left; Only a monster dedicated to war for war's sake, having lost sight of his original motives from years and years of endless conflict.
The sheer imperialism of Ku is just as effective at creating monsters as the Shadow is. A sobering commentary on the cruelty and dehumanization of expansionist greed.
Is this Mugen?

Go nuts, buddy
HI :) disorganized Octopath thoughts: GO! If this ends up in the main tag for some reason I’m sorry this is a birthday exclusive infodump
Octopath traveler 2 is a JRPG available on the switch, PC, and PlayStation released in 2023 :) It follows 8 different protagonists, each with their own unique story that all intertwine into a much larger plot :) Each character is a different class!!! You pick a guy to start with and then go around the world map to pick up everyone else, this was my order as well as their stories
Hikari (warrior)- A kindhearted prince from the nation of Ku, who’s bloodline is cursed/possessed to intrusive thoughts of violence and bloodshed. After being framed for the death of his father, the king, by his brother Mugen and shunned from Ku, he journeys to raise an army to take back his nation and lead it to a future without bloodshed.
Castti (apothecary)- found at sea with no memories, the only clues she has to who she was are a bloodstained journal and an apothecary’s satchel. She’s caring and compassionate. Meeting a strange apothecary named Malaya, she journeys to recover her lost memories.
Partitio (merchant)- a warm, sunshine-y country boy from a silver mining town. After his town became overtaken by capitalists, he experienced the horror of poverty firsthand. He journeys to see the world and end the cruel clutches of capitalism through commerce.
Agnea (dancer)- A small town girl with a big heart and bigger passion to make people smile through dance. After saving enough money to travel the world, she journeys to bring joy to the world, like her late mother did.
Ochette (hunter)- An energetic beastling, a race which lives in harmony with nature. After the feared “Scarlet Night” threatens her island home, she journeys to bring the three guardian dieties of the land back to the island.
Throné (thief)- a cutthroat assassin from the underground organization known as the Blacksnakes. Despite how she can take a life faster than tying a shoe, she despises the scent of blood and longs to be free. She journeys to take the life of the leaders of the Snakes to earn her freedom.
Temenos (cleric)- sharp-tongued “inquisitor” of the church of flame, who functions as a sort of detective. After a dastardly murder of the pontiff and tensions between the Sacred Guard, he journeys to find the truth of the church’s intrigue.
Osvald (scholar)- A gruff, stoic man. He used to be a magic professor, but was framed for the murder of his wife and child and sentenced to life in prison. He journeys to kill the man who took everything from him, Harvey.
The gameplay is turn based with a focus on exploring weaknesses in order to get foes into a vulnerable state. It’s also pretty big on setting up! The biggest thing though is known as the boost mechanic that powers up your moves in 3 increments, timing your boosts right combined with buffing and breaking foes results in super satisfying gameplay <|:•)
Each characters story is separated into chapters, depending on the character there’s different amounts of chapters! For example Hikari has 5 chapters, but Temenos only has 4 because his chapter 3 is separated into two routes (like 3a and 3b) while Ochette only has 3 because her chapter 2 is separated into three routes. Besides a recommended level, you can literally play them in any order! You can focus on one characters story or do one chapter for each traveler, it’s whatever you want!!! And besides your main traveler, you can switch out the members of your party and organize them any way you’d like!!!
Each character has “path actions”, where you can interact with NPCs as you explore the world. You have different actions based on if it’s day or night. For example, Hikari can challenge NPCs to a one on one fight to gain access to new skills in battle, and at night he can spend money to bribe NPCs for information. Throné, however, can steal items from NPCs during the day, and knock people out at night. Many path actions intersect in use (Osvald, Castti, Temenos, and Hikari all have a path action to gain information) but they vary! Osvald’s is percentage based (ex. 80% chance to obtain information), Castti’s is level based (ex need to be level 30 to gain information, but it’s guaranteed) Temenos’ is battle based (must break an NPC in battle to gain information), and Hikari’s is money based (need to have the money to bribe people and gain information)
You don’t need to know anything about the original octopath to play it, but there’s cool references and the like
Ok I think that’s good for a basic overview. Bonus LGBT headcanons :)
-Agnea: Bi trans ace (she/her)
-Throné: Trans lesbian (they/she)
-Osvald: #straightosvaldsaturday + ace spec (he/him)
-Castti: Sapphic ace (she/her)
-Hikari: non binary bi ace spec (he/they)
-Temenos: queer non binary (any pronouns)
-Ochette: Agender aro (any pronouns)
-Partitio: Trans bi (he/him)
-Crick: Gay man (he/him)
Speaking of headcanons I have over 13 pages of them. Oops. Every time someone likes this post I’ll share one ok bye

WIP LIST MEME
Tagged by @suspiciouspopsicle <><><>
Everything currently in the works is Octopath Traveler 2 (who could have possibly guessed?) Tagging @auncyen (if you feel like doing it! no pressure!)
Actively working on!
Casting Shadows - Partitio/Hikari Supernatural Horror/Urban Fantasy Modern AU Where Partitio and Papp move to an apartment in a new city and Partitio finds himself entrenched in a darkness he could never have imagined. (Probably about 2/3s or so complete, updates monthly on average. Read Here.)
Salve for Serpents - Castti/Throne faery tale inspired Fantasy AU, a follow up to The Prince and the Magpie, where Castti and Throne try to find a way to break the curse that binds them together. The first two chapters up Here.
A Mother's Blade - Canon Divergence fic about Kura being the chosen warrior and searching the continent for her lost son, Hikari, and finding herself entangled in the machinations of the country that she's left behind. First chapter Here.
Where The Wind Calls Home - Partitio/Hikari Stardew Valley AU. Partitio finds himself smitten with the new farmer in town, Hikari, a polite and quiet man, who's smile doesn't quite reach his eyes. Two of Eight total parts Here (along with a recipe in the notes of part two.)
Backburnered (for now)
The Light Goes On - Crick/Temenos faery tale inspired Fantasy AU, where Temenos has been charged with the murder of the Pontiff and must make a pilgrimage to atone before the gods before his execution. Along the way, they meet Ochette, and Temenos starts to get answers to more mysteries than just how the Pontiff died. 3rd fic in the cycle starting with The Prince and the Magpie.
Untitled Fantasy AU - Fourth in the cycle starting with The Prince and the Magpie (if I get around to it before I lose steam), which sees Osvald and Agnea thrown together for their own goals, better off together than alone. Agnea has never left home, but the cursed shoes on her feet compel her to move and dance at the slightest music, and Osvald, who seeks the knowledge that might save his wife and daughter. Not romance fic like the others, but will focus on Osvald and Agnea growing into a father/daughter type relationship (there may be background romance, but it will not be for these two).
Untitled Canon Divergence/Meta fic where the travelers are all revenants, stuck undying until they've completed the tasks the gods have chosen them for, banding together in this bitter immortality and trying to forge friendships and relationships with each other, as no other people know the same pain that they do.
Untitled Canon Divergence where guns exist en masse thanks to the Roque Company, and it just so happens that General Mugen of Ku shows a great interest in what help these new weapons might prove in his bid for the throne of Ku, and further, the world.
Untitled Canon/post Canon fic with Fire Emblem Awakening influences, where Hikari and Partitio have an adopted daughter who travels back in time to save them from some unknown threat. (will probably feature other adopted children from other pairings if I ever really get it off the ground).
I lied about it all being Octopath Traveler 2!
I have one original story that's currently backburnered.
Detective Lilith - 1910s era period mystery piece about a cross dressing autistic lesbian detective. Meant to be the first in a series kind of like Poirot, but featuring lots of queer people and POC in a wide variety of roles and relationships. I had a bit of a breakthrough on it recently regarding the mystery so I might be picking it up again soon.

K so Hikari and Osvald knowing each other before canon due to distant family connections is great and can lead to hilarity if we ignore the obvious angst later.
The Prince came back from his trip, he looks happier and peppier so it probably was a good trip. Now it's time for the routine of the Prince coming up to the nicer soldiers and asking for a quick spar and you are the nicer soldiers so you comply. As he goes and shows you his improved swordwork he then goes and lobs a fireball at you, burning most of the field.
He immediately apologizes for it and says how he should have practiced first before applying magic to sparring, and you forgive him because he's the Prince and you're honestly too shocked to be angry.
Several hours later everyone is asking if you taught him magic because you were the first one he talked to and used magic in front of. Everyone is confused on how he did it and are trying to come up with a feasible answer. You have none because you're just some guy with a sword on guard duty.
This goes on for several months, and one day you are watching the Prince go up against General Mugen which- Gods this is probably only happening because the General wanted to prove a point and humiliate his brother and prove that he is weak or something like that. And then out of nowhere, the Prince steps back, calls for Alephan to aid him, and then screams "TONITRUS CANERE"
So you now have a fear of lightning and the Prince is being scolded on proper control over the magical arts.
Several weeks later you heard that the King wrote to the Prince's Teacher in the Magical Arts concerning his lack of control, only to be given a letter back that, while goes and apologizes for not working on the Prince's lack of magical control, effectively calls the King foolish for thinking Prince Hikari wouldn't want to practice his magical skills and that there should be tutors who should be helping him practice so that he doesn't always practice during sparring.
You then find out that a separate letter was sent to the King that is practically a call-out to all the war Ku has waged and how it will eventually lead to nothing and how the King is ineffective in leadership and how the Kingdom will eventually fall because of several pissed off people.
You still don't know what's happening but now the Prince is offering you to learn some lightning magic to perhaps help with the fear of lightning, something you appreciate.
