Cart Attack
Slowly but surely, the way we all once shopped for groceries will be a distant memory. Tucked away in old photos and fading recollections, our interactions with humans—Trader Joe’s notwithstanding—will be a non-starter. We will simply go about our shopping business, scan, weigh, pay, and be on our way.
And the latest news from Kroger is that they are now going into a more serious test phase of their KroGo concept shopping cart, one that allows shoppers to weigh and pay. The cart, which was first announced in January 2021 yet had been in private test since October 2020 at a Kroger store in Cincinnati, is now being used at the chain’s store of the future in Monroe Ohio.
As if Kroger has not been in the news enough lately, with its planned acquisition of Albertson’s. If these new carts fly, they could possibly roll out to all 5000 stores in the combined chain, including our local United Supermarkets.
Tumblr media
The goal is to make the shopping experience as seamless as possible. Self-check is certainly a big push in that direction, aside from when you need the clerk overseeing the self-check cluster to approve your beer purchase. It was a perfect fit during the COVID era, and now appears to be a mainstay.
The carts use AI to monitor the shopping experience, which necessarily becomes an audience-of-one once the shopper logs in with their loyalty card number or credit card. The cart weighs everything put into it, and can provide in-store wayfinding advice (“Pasta is on Aisle 7”), as well as adverts targeted squarely at the shopper (“I see you added a case of beer. Would you like some aspirin?”).
Smart carts like these cost between $5000 and $10,000 apiece, but Kroger and a handful of other retailers who have already made the plunge, see them as worth the cost. Stores do not need to be retrofitted with more self-check bays, and by being able to tailor the shopping experience, they see add-on sales happening.
I do have some concerns about these carts, the maintenance required, weather-related problems when they are taken outdoors during a downpour, and theft by transients who see them as a way cool means of transporting their worldly possessions. There are certainly bugs to work out just in this department alone.
Kroger does not view the carts as labor saving, though, and in fact hired extra workers to help ease the shopping transition. I suspect they will also need more crew to retrieve carts rapidly, lest they be exposed to the elements for long. As for cart theft, I imagine they could be outfitted with a GPS tracker, not a big stretch given all the other technology onboard.
Of course, shoplifting is an ever-present concern. But if the entire cart is the scale, it should be able to detect even the slightest nuanced change, like a bag of chips. Still, everything must be scanned, meaning as many items as possible will require a bar code, lest users have to do a look-up like at the self-check aisle. And then there is still need for someone to approve your beer purchase.
Northeast chain Wegman recently killed its scan-and-go offering, because of rampant shoplifting. Theirs were not smart carts, though, so it was a hybrid between new-world tech and old-world buggy. One can only hope that Kroger has addressed this issue thoroughly. But then again, theft has always been a problem, long before self-check was ever envisioned. Sam’s Club is powering on with scan-and-go, but at least they have someone checking you at the door.
In a somewhat broader sense, the target market for smart carts is younger, educated, tech-savvy, and more affluent customers. This translates to Gen-Z and younger Millennials, although I would be brushing them aside were I shopping in Ohio this weekend.  I need to see this. But I can only imagine the head aches and other hurdles Kroger will face with people who struggle to check out their own groceries, or even use a chip card at a regular check stand. I can’t even. The burden of this consumer education will fall squarely on Kroger.
Then again, I can’t even imagine not knowing how to do all these things. Which cave did you come from?
I should note that, at least anecdotally among many of my students, there is a strong preference for little or no human interaction. These are the same people who love WFH, thanks to COVID. But it’s not like young adults are anti-social. It’s more likely that they care to more selectively curate their interactions so that they are with people they actually know and like, not total strangers handling every grocery item you buy.
There may also be pockets of resistance. It may not be lack of consumer education, but rather just a “hell no.” There are people who cling to the old ways of doing things, because, well, the old way wasn’t necessarily broken, and they rather like things the way they were. It worked for decades. No one starved for lack of being able to pay cash to a human banging on a clunky old cash register, unless you were just broke.
I’m sure that humanity will get over it, and we will all adapt. If you go back far enough, and I mean even before JFK was killed, we didn’t have wireless communications either. Your phone was bolted to a wall, or sat on an end table tethered by a short cable. Now look at us. And Amazon did not exist prior to its 1995 launch. Oh, and paper maps. Imagine trying to navigate with one of those while driving.
Mark my words, readers. You are living at the end of an era, and the beginning of the next. You will have stories for your grandkids. You can prevail upon them with tales of having to use a kiosk, or, worse yet, interact with a clerk. Oh, the humanity! They will sympathize with you, or maybe just humor you with an “Oh, I’m sorry.”
Either way, we continue our head-long rush into the future. Put that in your cart and weigh it. You are actually busy making the memories of the future.

Basket Case
The pandemic has caused all of us to rethink how we shop for groceries. Those who continue to shop indoors now (for the most part) take proper precautions by masking up, sanitizing hands and carts, going fewer times, using self-check, and maintaining distance. Because of the pandemic, we found ourselves cooking more at home, and thus our demand for groceries in general has grown significantly.
For the those who rapidly adopted what is now being called e-grocery shopping, the market exploded from pre-pandemic levels, and is expected to account for 21.5% of all grocery sales by 2025. This includes both curbside pickup and home delivery.
Supermarkets are rushing fast and furiously to adapt their stores to facilitate safer, faster shopping expeditions. Walmart, for example, added its Walmart+ membership app last September, which functions much like Amazon Prime, but also gives shoppers the ability to Scan & Go, bypassing self-check or a traditional checkout. Amazon Go Grocery utilizes other technologies that also allow shoppers to simply walk out.
And now Kroger is quietly testing its new KroGo smartcarts in Ohio. The newfangled shopping baskets are loaded with technology, including a built-in scale and a screen. The cart will recognize products and add them to your tab.
Tumblr media
Once again, the premise is to promote easier, faster shopping so that shoppers can get in and get out without having unnecessary close contact with other humans.
All of this comes at a time when at least one voice in the wild is urging shoppers to once again reconsider all of their in-store shopping experiences, because of the rapid spread of new variants of the coronavirus.
All of this is well and good, especially for those who still prefer to purchase their groceries at the store. Maybe it is a fear of e-commerce in general, concern over order pickers making mistakes or substituting other items, or  stock-outs. Maybe it is just an unceasing preference to select the fruits and vegetables your family eats. Either way, the best that analysts hope for in a few years still leaves nearly 80% of us going inside the store.
From an implementation perspective, it seems that Walmart’s approach is the hands-down winner in cost effectiveness. Amazon’s concept store is a technology superstore, and Kroger’s shopping carts have fragile components that will be subject to the outdoor elements, careless users, technology failure to detect and bill for all items, and even theft. It’s a great idea, but so are elaborate mousetraps that seldom work better than the basic spring-load model.
Walmart’s method, while relying heavily on customer honesty, is thus the easiest and cheapest to deploy. No new technology is needed other than an app. And remember, all of these are developments designed to keep us in the store when we probably ought to be reconsidering that. It’s also worth noting that Walmart+ is a long-awaited response to Amazon Prime, so it is promoting a shopping ecosystem consisting of e-commerce, deliveries, and in-store Scan & Go.
I’m inclined to give Walmart+ a try, and use it for a variety of shopping experiences. I’ll let you know how it goes. All I know is that shopping for groceries sure isn’t what it was like a year ago, with every other person shopping near you a possible contributor to your failing health.
Someone hand me the sanitizer, please.
