Anemone. (Withered hopes, forsaken)

THOSE matter-of-fact people who will always have a pro ready for their old gossips' con, assert that this flower derives its name from anemos, the Greek word for wind, and say thence came our poetical appellation of "the wind-flower." The glorious ancients, however, tell us that the anemone was formerly a nymph beloved by Zephyr, and that Flora, jealous of her beauty, banished her from her Court, and finally trans- formed her into the flower that now bears her name. Rapin makes use of this story in his Latin poem, " The Gardens," as he does also of another oft-told tale, which states that the anemone sprang from the blood of Adonis, combined with the tears which Venus shed over his body. There are so many versions of this latter fable that it is impossible to say which looks the most authentic.

ANEMONE Forsaken These beautiful, fragile flowers come from the Near East and the Mediterranean, and were first brought to Britain at the end of the sixteenth century. In Greece, anemones carpet the hillsides and olive groves in springtime with their brilliant red, white, pink and purple blooms. Their name comes from the Greek anemos, meaning 'the wind', because their delicate flowers appear to open in a gentle breeze, but are so short-lived, like a breath of wind. The anemone has come to be associated with the story of the lovers Aphrodite and Adonis. Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, was besotted with this beautiful youth, but he was fatally wounded by a wild boar and died in her arms. She sprinkled nectar on his blood, from which sprang the vivid red anemone. Abandonment, and love that is fleeting and will not last, are symbolized by this flower.

18th April 1934 saw the death of Glasgow businesswoman Kate Cranston.

Catherine, or Kate, Cranston was the daughter of George Cranston, a Glasgow baker baker and pastry maker who, in 1849, the year of her birth, diversified into running a hotel. Originally the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway Hotel, this became the Royal Horse Hotel and, in 1852, “Cranston’s Hotel and Dining Rooms”.

Kate’s older brother, Stuart, became a tea dealer at a time when Glesga had a strong temperance movement and tea, until the 1830s a luxury for the rich, was increasingly being seen as an alternative to alcohol for the working classes. Stuart pioneered the idea of tea rooms in which his tea could be drunk in simple surroundings. Although Kate was not the first in the family to enter the business, when she established the Crown Luncheon Room on Argyle Street in 1878 she took the tea room to another level, placing great emphasis on the quality of the design and decor, on cleanliness, and on quality and choice of food.

n 1892 Kate married John Cochrane, but continued to trade as Miss Cranston’s Tearooms. She had opened her second tea room, in Ingram Street. She added a further tea room in Buchanan Street in 1897, and completed her chain with the Willow Tea Rooms in Sauchiehall Street, which opened in 1903. Miss Cranston’s Tearooms became the thriving centres of Glasgow’s society.

Kate Cranston always saw good design as central to her success. In 1888 she commissioned interior designer George Walton to design an Arts and Crafts styled extension for it the Ingram Street premises. Then, in 1900, she asked Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife Margaret Macdonald to design a room, also at Ingram Street. She must have been impressed with the result, because she entrusted the pair with all aspects of the design of the Willow Tea Rooms. The results were a sensation at the time, and remain so today, such is the enduring quality of excellent design.

Kate Cranston pursued a number of other projects over the following years, sometimes calling on the design skills of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald. When he husband died in 1917 she sold her tea rooms and other business interests, and withdrew from public life. She had no children and after her death in 1934 it emerged that she had left two thirds of her estate to the poor of Glasgow.

This was a full-blown, very plump damsel, fair as waxwork, with handsome and regular features, languishing blue eyes, and ringleted yellow hair. The hue of her dress was black too; but its fashion was so different from her sister’s—so much more flowing and becoming—it looked as stylish as the other’s looked puritanical.

STUDIO CITY, CA – July 13, 2023 – Holland Roden (“Teen Wolf”) and Corey Cott (Newsies) star in “Making Waves,” a new, original movie premiering Saturday, August 5 (8 p.m. ET/PT), on Hallmark Channel as part of the network’s annual Summer Nights programming event.

Amelia (Roden) is a music executive who goes to a festival to beat out the competition for an elusive new band and discovers that the group is fronted by Will (Cott), her childhood summer sweetheart. Over the course of the week, as Amelia tries to convince Will that her company is the better choice for his musical vision, she realizes there might be a conflict of interest...her feelings for him.

“Making Waves” is from Hallmark Media. Marguerite Henry is executive producer. Charles Cooper is producer, and Allen Lewis serves as Supervising Producer. Terry Ingram directed from a script by Laura Streicher & Kate Schriver.

I’m so, so grateful for the platform Star Wars has given me, and like you’ve… and now heard me blabble and cry up here. I don’t take it lightly, I take it very seriously. So I have the chance to write a couple books now, one we’re gonna announce tomorrow, it’s called Star Wars Every Day and it comes out in October. It’s a lifestyle book on how to live your best Star Wars life all year long. One thing I’m very very very proud of because it’s a passion project I’ve worked on for five years now, so one lesson that Ahsoka taught me is ‘Patience’. Lots and lots of patiences. I launched a new video called ‘Star Wars: Mindful Matters’. [host] They are just 2-3 minute short videos where I get to teach mindful lessons, mindful lessons that we learn from Star Wars. Our favorite characters from Star Wars teach these lessons, but I teach how you can do them too. So I share exercises, and they are clinically-based mindful exercises. They’re on the Star Wars Kids channel and starwarskids.com, but I want to preface, they are for everyone. We put them on the kid’s page, because we want parents to know that these videos are safe for kids to do, because our kids need to learn these lessons now more than ever. 19:12 did you go back on Rebels or FO for research? RF: yea MI: well I actually didn’t. I feel like I had so much freedom to make Reva who she wanted to be,you know, being her in live-action for the first time. I mainly just focused on the prequels.

RF: A lot of people here already know this but the less of superans wouldn’t: the Grand Inquisitor used to be a Jedi so to me, that’s like super important for this. MI: I think that’s a tough one. So it’s certainly sth I’ll remember forever. RF: [I’m] quite a lot older than Moses. We used to totally dress up as the characters and run around in the woods and pretend to be.

What’s your approach and what you bring from your personal fandom? Coming from Mando, and this is all legacy characters, we want to be very respectful of the canon and make sure we were lining up with everything but at the same time do something new and tell new stories. I think one of the most interesting thing that we have in the show is that we are with characters we know and love, but we’re at a different point in their lives.

Did you expect Mando do go global? No idea. Lots of projects at Lucasfilm at that time, the small story really connected with people with lockdown.

14:50 How do you keep secrets? DF: It’s really difficult. We don’t even tell most everybody on set what’s going all the time and that’s not always as intentional. We come up with little code names and things. We think of how we would’ve felt to see the fans themselves and try to think like that and JF: and it’s like trying to wrap Christmas presents around the house. DF: and sometimes we forget people coming in like R didn’t even know she was in a scene with Luke we kept calling him Plo Koon which… JF: That was just nickname. DF: When we made that the code, remeber we thought ‘well that make sense because people that I would bring him back because people know I like that character’ but we didn’t. JF: In the concept art we wouldn’t even have them draw Luke, we have them draw that character. DF: All these awesome paintings of Plo Koon and I’m like ‘I only get to see these, no one else got to see this.’ We thought of putting then in though, at one point. JF: We even had a CGI head of that character, so when you saw the daily in the editing room, it looks like that was the character. We actually paid for visual effects we didn’t use just to fool people working on the show.

27th May 1849 saw the birth in Glasgow of Kate Cranston, who did much to promote the popularity of tea rooms, and was an important patron of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Catherine, or Kate, Cranston was the daughter of George Cranston, a Glasgow baker baker and pastry maker who, in 1849, the year of her birth, diversified into running a hotel. Originally the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway Hotel, this became the Royal Horse Hotel and, in 1852, “Cranston’s Hotel and Dining Rooms”.

Kate’s older brother, Stuart, became a tea dealer at a time when Glesga had a strong temperance movement and tea, until the 1830s a luxury for the rich, was increasingly being seen as an alternative to alcohol for the working classes. Stuart pioneered the idea of tea rooms in which his tea could be drunk in simple surroundings. Although Kate was not the first in the family to enter the business, when she established the Crown Luncheon Room on Argyle Street in 1878 she took the tea room to another level, placing great emphasis on the quality of the design and decor, on cleanliness, and on quality and choice of food.

In 1892 Kate married John Cochrane, but continued to trade as Miss Cranston’s Tearooms. She had opened her second tea room, in Ingram Street. She added a further tea room in Buchanan Street in 1897, and completed her chain with the Willow Tea Rooms in Sauchiehall Street, which opened in 1903. Miss Cranston’s Tearooms became the thriving centres of Glasgow’s society.

Kate Cranston always saw good design as central to her success. In 1888 she commissioned interior designer George Walton to design an Arts and Crafts styled extension for it the Ingram Street premises. Then, in 1900, she asked Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife Margaret Macdonald to design a room, also at Ingram Street. She must have been impressed with the result, because she entrusted the pair with all aspects of the design of the Willow Tea Rooms. The results were a sensation at the time, and remain so today, such is the enduring quality of excellent design.

Kate Cranston pursued a number of other projects over the following years, sometimes calling on the design skills of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald. When he husband died in 1917 she sold her tea rooms and other business interests, and withdrew from public life. She had no children and after her death in 1934 it emerged that she had left two thirds of her estate to the poor of Glasgow.
