WITH DEATH COMES LIFE (Cretaceous-Paleogene Extinction Event) ((66.0 MYA))

Note
i don't think we mention how fucking horrifying that extinction was in popular media enough. like funny asteroid go brrrrr but that's really fucking sad to me. they were here for hundreds of millions of years and just got fucking obliterated by a big enough rock.
like it was ONE DAY
ONE
most mass extinctions take millions of years
but the world literally went from
"look at this lovely biosphere, all these wonderful animals and plants and fungi and microbes, look at them doing their thing"
(Prehistoric Planet)
and then
BOOM
everything over 25 kg? dead
Anything under? Better hide from the
GLOBAL WILDFIRES
TSUNAMIS
SHOCK WAVES
and IMPACT WINTER
and hope you can find food for the next few millennia while the SUN IS BLOTTED OUT
this is *trauma*. the BIGGEST TRAUMA our biosphere has possibly EVER HAD
(there's one impact event that was bigger, 2billion years ago, but this was before life really became complex - so who knows how that affected the life at the time)
ONE DAY
change isn't supposed to fucking happen that fast
never mind such DEVASTATING change
and like, the Jurassic + Cretaceous is the longest period of relatively stable terrestrial environments on earth. The Paleozoic through the Triassic is just a lot of awkwardness, complex life stretching its metaphorical legs and figuring things out
but the J+C was a fairly stable series of succeeding ecosystems with gradual change and a few minor mass extinctions that they got through
like,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Free Speculative Evolution Prompt Saturday: K-PG Lightning Round!
66 million years ago, a mass extinction event wiped out 75% of life on earth, wiping out the dinosaurs, and leading to the age of mammals. And 66 million years later a sapient species of hairless primates discovers dinosaur bones and imagines what would happen if they never went extinct.
For those who don't want to follow this trope but still like the idea of alerting the cenozoic through the end K-PG this is your post.
Part One: Changing Difficulties
One of the easiest ways of changing the Cenozoic through the end Cretaceous is by lowering or increasing the percentage of life being wiped out from the end Cretaceous. For example, if the percentage was lowered by 60 or less you could have other mammals like multituberculates and Dryolestida, you could even include some non avian dinosaurs survive to the Cenozoic. now for the opposite side of the scale you could go full on Sephiroth and go 80 to END PERMIAN levels of extinction, wiping off the birds, most of the placental mammals, and all gymnosperm plants! leaving a world much weirder then where we were.
Part 2: Location Location Location
We all know about the butterfly effect right? one small or insignificant change would change everything, from a butterfly fluttering it's wings, to the exact location of a asteroid hitting earth. while it will wipe out 75% of life on earth, but the brunt of the death would depend on where the asteroid would hit, and no I'm not just talking about the amount of animals that would die near the impact but the rest of ecosystems of the hemisphere. for example, if the asteroid hit somewhere off the coast of Chile or northern Argentina more southern hemisphere animals would die then the northern hemisphere animals.
Part 3: The Cause
let's say you wanted to be creative and don't want a asteroid wiping out the dinosaurs, you might wanna have the earth go through a ice age in the K-PG, or maybe have the deccan traps be more destructive to earth, or maybe some alien space bats to cherry pick the animals you don't like and kill them. Be creative.

31 Mermaids, 2- Ghost
Tumblr media
Ghost mermaids have been puzzling scientist and occult scholars; not really for what they could teach about death, but for what they seem to imply about the history of life.
To date, interviewed mermaids have never recognized a known ghost as a specific formerly individual. However, besides them only appearing at night and being mostly incorporeal, one ghostmaid has allegedly been tracked to her "manifestation site", which revealed a gigantic skeleton, or possibly several.
No proper exploration has been carried out yet, but what perplexes researchers is how the bones seem to be fossilized, embedded in layers of rock that have been dated to many different periods, invariably earlier than the K-Pg extinction boundary.
Ghostmaids sing like merfolk, but their vocal range extends far into the infrasound. This is theorized to be at least partially due to their size.
Neither land humans nor merfolk have been able to recognize a language or to ascertain whether words are present at all in the songs.
To date, one attempt is alleged to have been made at verbal communication by an independent researcher using advanced recording equipment and underwater microphone.
No information exists on the results, or the researcher's whereabouts.
