This version of what those plaque people called Stan’s “dramatic comedy debut” is actually quite subdued compared to what is described in John McCabe’s Mr Laurel and Mr Hardy, which is funny since this is from a play and McCabe wrote a biography. They call these sort of things “reimaginings” now, don’t they? I gather it’s a euphemism for a pack of lies with possibly a grain of truth in the mix.
John Sessions plays Stan and Robbie Coltrane is Pickard/Stan’s dad.

Merle Oberon and Laird Cregar in The Lodger (John Brahm, 1944) Cast: Laird Cregar, Merle Oberon, George Sanders, Cedric Hardwicke, Sara Allgood, Aubrey Mather, Queenie Leonard, Doris Lloyd, David Clyde, Helena Pickard. Screenplay: Barré Lyndon, based on a novel by Marie Belloc Lowndes. Cinematography: Lucien Ballard. Art direction: James Basevi, John Ewing. Film editing: J. Watson Webb Jr. Music: Hugo Friedhofer. Laird Cregar's great gift as the heaviest of heavies was to elicit a kind of sympathy for the bad guys he played. Which is no easy task when you're playing the most infamous of serial killers, Jack the Ripper. Marie Belloc Lowndes's novel was only "based on" the notorious murderer of ladies of the night -- it wasn't explicit that the character was Jack (whoever that was) -- and the earlier filmings, particularly Alfred Hitchcock's 1927 silent version, The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog, followed her lead, perhaps because Hitchcock's lodger was played by matinee idol Ivor Novello, which led to a twist in which the character turned out not to be the killer after all. But screenwriter Barré Lyndon and director John Brahm were perfectly happy to capitalize on the Ripper's perennial notoriety. This is a good, atmospheric version of the story, with effective shadowy, expressionistic camerawork by Lucien Ballard, and a solid cast.

“People Like Us” s2e3 (2001)
Tumblr media
Hilarious.
Written and directed by John Morton, this is one of the very best episodes.
The language is witty, and there are many big laughs. Best of all, you really feel empathy for the characters.
Thanks, in no small part, to the sublime casting. Nicola Walker, Tim Preece, Susan Earl, and Philip Pickard as the (desperate) staff of a small-town newspaper.
Like many episodes of this sublime mockumentary series, you could easily imagine these characters being spun-off into their own show.

Art21 proudly presents an artist segment, featuring Theaster Gates, from the "Chicago" episode in the ninth season of the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" series.
"Chicago " premiered in September 2016 on PBS. Watch now on PBS and the PBS Video app: https://www.pbs.org/video/art-21-chic...
Theaster Gates first encountered creativity in the music of Black churches on his journey to becoming an urban planner, potter, and artist. Gates creates sculptures out of clay, tar, and renovated buildings, transforming the raw material of the South Side into radically reimagined vessels of opportunity for the community.
Establishing a virtuous circle between fine art and social progress, Gates strips dilapidated buildings of their components, transforming those elements into sculptures that act as bonds or investments, the proceeds of which are used to finance the rehabilitation of entire city blocks. Many of the artist’s works evoke his African-American identity and the broader struggle for civil rights, from sculptures incorporating fire hoses, to events organized around soul food, and choral performances by the experimental musical ensemble Black Monks of Mississippi, led by Gates himself.
