So, I have several new characters despite not 'joining any new games'.
It's failed, horribly.
My husband and I have started several games, one he is running is an open game that anyone is welcome to join called En Garde! Via a Discord server.
I have 2 characters in the game, after retiring my first. (He hit his end game, got to SL 10, married his mistress, was a King's Musketeer for a few months, debt free, and is now running an inn that'll be used as a backdrop for other things.)
Second character is Serge de Bordeaux, the bastard of an impoverished Comte, he is looking to make a name for himself, and prove he's not his father (he's better.) He is a cock sure 18 year old, and he currently needs a good bit of money to get out of debt, and then begin climbing the social ladder.
Newest character is Solitaire Énveré (real name Soléne Anouihl), a 'married' 16 year old, Sol goes by her childhood nickname and 'married' her best friend Céline Beauchamp (alias Alizee Énveré). They are both very new to Paris, and they are not in fact a real couple. Sol has no interest in being a man, but they both understand how much is closed to single women in the likes of 1626 Paris due to social norms, so they set out to make their life a bit better and see the City for themselves. They've made some friends, and make a big show of 'just being married', with Sol being a bit more quiet as she tries to keep up her charade.
For another game we have started called Honor and Introgue, I have a youngish (21-22) year old pirate in the Caribbean, she has very little interest in settling down, though is a hopeless romantic. She has been sailing the Caribbean for 3 years, after leaving England originally during the Protestant Reformation. Relocating with her uncle and cousin to Italy, where she found the life her uncle offered was not at all palatable. She ran off, leaving her family behind and learning Italian before meeting a man and his son, who took her in, taught her how to fight the Italian Duel style, she took off once more when the son died and the man threw her out (then died, and she is now being blamed for that, because SURPRISE! The son isn't actually dead.)
Anyway, I am super excited to see where she winds up, at the moment she has done her best to refuse anything higher than First Mate/Quartermaster on a ship. She has been enlisted by the Pirate King of Tortuga as his quartermaster at the moment, as they attempt to get enough treasure to keep his position. (She has an enemy of the Admiral of the Spanish Navy's wife, because of an affair, and she is basically on the run from her brother who is a Captain in the Navy. He's being paid by her to hunt Sybil down and kill her.) Said Captain is backing another Pirate captain who is using fine goods to Garner votes from the others to become the Pirate King himself, and then a puppet for the Spanish Naval Man.
Right now there is a chance Sybil dies, but it all goes according to plan, she is likely to be shoved out by the Pirate King as he announces he's retiring, and throwing her in as the next King. (Which she will absolutely hate, and I look forward to the big climactic battle for this portion, as we will end the story after Tortuga's fate is decided.)
THEN my husband has the audacity to be like "I really want to play Fate." So he kept pitching me ideas, until he suggested what boils down to basically Bridgerton meets Spider-man with Swashbuckling.
I fell on playing Matilda Whitlock, a woman just reaching age to attend the Ton, and be touted about for marriage. Her brother and her are the only two living members of their family, after their parents are killed off for land disputes (we aren't actually sure yet). Nathan, her brother is a gambler, and has been running the family into poverty, he is pursued by debt collectors, and they are at risk of losing everything.
Matilda in our one session played so far, has been very clear in her disdain of being married off, not because she doesn't want a husband. Secretly she longs to find a man she loves and could spend her life with much like her mother and father, however, she has spent the last several years learning to fight, to take on the cities criminals, and slowly gaining insight on who killed her parents.
She is a haughty, stubborn woman of society during the day, attending tea, entertaining visits of men, and doing her duty no matter how much she bucks against it.
At night she dressed in a black outfit, complete with black mask, and has been deemed 'The Black Goat' by the citizens and criminals alike. All believe the Goat is nothing more than a vigilante man, playing at being more than he is. She has proven in her one session a competent fighter, as well as more than happy to use her skills for somewhat selfish reasons. (She went after debt collectors who took her jewelry to pay off her brother's debts.)
I can not wait to see where all these new characters go, especially as we wrap up other games.
Coming to an end are Burning Wheel (Burning Seas), which I have a feeling is going to end with Jerica's death.
Burning Wheel (Burning Stars) with @artbyakikira , who has been a delight as a Roden named Bumper, but we will answer so many questions, will my elf die? Or will she cling to life and keep Galluchanar alive as well? Will my dwarf continue to fight for her birth right? Or will she accept her adopted brother and let him take the throne? Will she die fighting against the corrupted elves, or will she die fighting the elven army marching on Maraknaplana to keep the dwarves from taking the mountain and possibly releasing the stars once more?
We are also wrapping up our Pathfinder for Savage Worlds game coming to an end. I feel Bacun is going to either not make it, or she's going to be lost to rage when she loses another friend.
13th Age with Terach is also coming to an end soon, our current quest to save the ancient Red Dragon Ethridge from the Lich King's poison is coming to an end. Leaving us wondering if our Druid will die to his patron of the Dragon Druid circle, if our Drow will be able to survive as the pair of dragons go at it, and if Terach will make it out of Ethridge's mind alive, or if they're doomed to become apart of a Dracholich.
Once this story arc is wrapped we head into Level 10, and start working on the Crusader's final assault and trying to end him. (I'm really curious what is going to happen, considering Terach is a Chaotic gremlin and could swing either way at the drop of a hat.)
Then we have Beyond the Wall, season 2 coming to an end. This game is a follow up in 5E from a previous game of Beyond the Wall, and is culminating in some very exciting times as we head into the mountain once again, to face off against our former ally and friend, to keep the world from ending.
We may finally get an answer from Amelio, the alf-elf fighter/paladin on who he wants to settle down with as well, the lovely elf who restored his voice, or the loyal and charming Tiefling he has been oblivious to until a big kiss (and mother and friend intervention and they forced him to tell Amelio. :P)
So many games are wrapping, but I'm hopeful to get to know these new duet characters, and explore who they are, what they want, and how far they are willing to go.

also idk how to word this rly, but what level of perfection do think Cyrus held Erica to? like perfection as a spy? or just perfection in general? i also like to think that while yes, Erica was wary of people before Joshua (bc of what Cyrus told her) she was just mainly awkward, and then Joshua came along they were besties, the dynamic duo, then he died and she was like “oh Grandad was right to a degree” and she became sort of “Ice Queen” (bc it was given to her by Zoe, a first yr so-) -t1sb
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, so I think Cyrus held Erica to pretty high standards in terms of being a spy, because anything but perfection is *going* to compromise the mission and the standard has to be high even if people don’t meet it every time. That being said, I do think that a significant portion of the pressure Erica feels come from herself. Like, she’s got all this potential to be the best spy in history, and every time she doesn’t meet that benchmark she failed (which isn’t me projecting my own perfectionist tendencies onto her even a little bit, no ma’am).
And I’ve gone into my thoughts on Joshua before (basically that having him be a red flag parade isn’t terribly interesting to me), but as far as Erica’s relationship to other people in general, just because Zoe is the one who gave her the Ice Queen nickname earlier that year specifically, that doesn’t mean that her more anti-social tendencies weren’t manifest from long before that. Going back to most of her drive for perfection being internal, I think she’s trying to be as tuned in and focused on being the best and her peers not only aren’t on her skill level, they’re also not on her intensity level. Given that Erica identifies Joshua as the most promising undercover agent the agency had seen (or something to that effect), we can assume that Joshua had at least a similar level intensity, and that was probably what they bonded over. I could see him *maybe* making a joke about something sketchy, but it my book it would have to remain a one-off incident, because if it was a more regular thing, I could see Erica getting at least a little suspicious, and the scene is the farmhouse hits so much harder if she didn’t see it coming. Y’know?
Also, for that scene you described, I’d make it less about comparing Ben and Joshua and more about how Erica is so tired of living her life isolated and she’s not going to that anymore because if the last year and a half has taught her anything, it’s that people need other people in their lives (we can tie this back to Ben as the first person to really demonstrate that it *can* be done while still being a successful spy, but it’s not a necessary requirement). She doesn’t know that Ben’s not going to betray her somewhere down the line (seeing as she doesn’t have view we do of this all being a children’s series with Ben being the audience insert), but that’s not the point. That’s not why the relationship is so significant.

growing strong, CH. 5
aka my rewrite of season 2 of Teen Wolf based on the question: what if Erica was best friends with Scott and Stiles from the beginning?
Derek starts testing those he thinks could be the kanima.  After Jackson fails, Erica is tasked with testing Lydia.  An experiment in Chemistry class provides enlightening conversations before the kanima is revealed.
CHAPTER FIVE - VENOMOUS (click to read on AO3)
[text from: Erica] I’m sorry for ignoring your texts.  I had orders.
[text from: Erica] Look, I’m sure you still have a lot of questions, and I want to answer them.  I’m willing to answer all of them.
[text from: Erica] Meet me at my house in an hour and I’ll tell you whatever you want to know.
Erica stared at her phone, glaring at the time as if it mocked her.  Jackson was supposed to come to her house over a half an hour ago, and she was pretty sure he wasn’t going to show up.  Derek had given her new orders, and she had tried to execute them the nice way, but if Jackson wanted to be like that, she would try the not-so-nice way.  It didn’t take her very long to track him to the school, his car sitting in the parking lot near the locker rooms.  She waited until she knew he was alone before appearing, pulling the bar that had been pinned to his chest up with one hand.
“Thanks,” he panted, his eyes still closed.
“Any time,” she replied, smirking down at him when he looked up at her in surprise.  “You didn’t answer my texts.”
“You stopped responding to mine,” he shot back.  “What do you want?”
“I need you to come with me,” she told him.  “If you want to shower and change, I can wait, but you’re leaving here with me.”
“Why?” he asked.  When she just cocked her head to the side, he groaned, but he stood up and went to shower.  Erica waited outside of the locker room for him to get cleaned up and dressed, then walked by his side the entire trip out to his Porsche.  She entered the address into his navigation, Jackson squinting at someone else touching his baby before he drove off.  “Am I in trouble or something?”
“Did you do something that would cause trouble?” she replied, smirking when he shot her a look.  “We’re going to find out.  We just need to ask you some questions and test something, and when it’s over, you can go home.”
“You’re not going to tell me what you’re testing, are you?” he questioned, sighing when she looked away from him to watch the surroundings pass.  “Great.”
Once they parked his car, they walked down to the train car together, Jackson looking around curiously before Erica plopped him down in a chair.  Derek began questioning him, Isaac looking on as Erica stood next to Jackson with her arms crossed over her chest.  She tried not to laugh when Jackson admitted to taping the night of the full moon, hoping to capture his transformation, but she also didn’t see the change the way that he did.  Her eyes shifted to Derek when Jackson offered to get the video, but she knew Derek still needed to test him.  She grabbed the back of Jackson’s neck and his shoulder, keeping him still and holding his head back as Derek brought the kanima toxin over and let it drip into his mouth.
They all stepped back to watch what happened, expecting Jackson to remain upright and confirm he was the kanima.  When he started tipping in his chair, Erica rushed forward, catching him before he hit the ground as his body became paralyzed.  She looked up at Derek, who sighed and accepted that Jackson was not the “snake” they were looking for.  He and Isaac left, leaving Erica to take care of Jackson until the toxin wore off.
“For the record, I wanted this to happen at my house, after I answered whatever questions you had about the Bite and what you’ve been experiencing,” she told him, sitting on the ground with his head in her lap while he could only look up at her.  “I was going to explain what the toxin was and why we needed to test you, but you couldn’t get past your ego and reply to me.”  The look in his eyes was unamused, and Erica knew he would be cutting her off and using his sharp tongue to get back at her if he was able.  She decided to take pity on him, remaining quiet for a while.  Because Derek had fed him the toxin, he couldn’t speak yet, but as it wore off, he was able to start moving his mouth again.
“Did Derek really order you to stop talking to me?” he asked first, his eyes averted.
“Yes,” she answered.  “He was trying to make you feel isolated so maybe you’d finally accept being in our pack.”
“I don’t know why you guys would even want me to be part of your pack at this point,” he scoffed.  “You, Isaac, and Boyd seem to get along just fine without me.”
“You think we don’t have our issues?” she replied.  “We’ve all got issues, but the point is that we don’t have to work through them all on our own anymore.  We have each other to help us with them.  Don’t you want that?  Don’t you want to feel like you belong somewhere certain?”
“I’m not even a werewolf,” he shook his head, avoiding her questions.  Truthfully, he did want all of that, but even if he was a werewolf, he didn’t think it would work out.  He was too different from the three of them - the four of them - and he had pushed them away too much already.
“You’re still pack,” Erica declared, reaching up to brush his hair back gently.  “I can smell it on you.”
“That’s weird,” he told her bluntly, smirking when she used that same hand to smack his forehead.  “What?  I’m just saying.”  His smirk turned into a more genuine smile as she continued brushing her fingers through his hair.  “How long does it usually take for this to wear off?”
“A while,” she admitted.  “But I won’t leave until you can.”
“Okay,” he nodded.  “Thanks, Erica.”
“No problem, Jackson.”
It took a little longer than expected for Jackson to gain full feeling of his body again.  He offered to drive her home, but after sitting for so long, she needed to go for a run.  By the time she got back home, it was late, but she knew she couldn’t sleep until she checked in with Derek, so she walked down to the pool house first.  Knocking quickly, she stepped inside and looked around, moving towards him once she located him on the couch.
“So if it’s not Jackson, it has to be-”
“Lydia,” Derek finished for her.  “It has to be Lydia.  She’s the only other person that’s received the Bite around here recently.”
“What’s your plan?” she asked.  “You promised we wouldn’t kill anyone until we learned the whole story, so what’s your plan to capture her?”
“I… don’t know yet,” he admitted.  “Maybe you and Isaac could find a way to test her at school?”
“Oh, so she can become paralyzed or potentially turn into a murderous lizard in the middle of class?  I don’t think so,” she shook her head.  “I have an idea, but I’ll have to get some people on board first.  Do you trust me?”
“You know I do,” he assured her.  “Just promise you’ll tell me your plan so I can be close by to act as backup?”
“Deal,” she promised him.
“You handled things well today,” he complimented her.  “Now go get some rest.”
“Yes alpha,” she nodded, leaning over to kiss his cheek as thanks for his praise before standing and setting off for bed.
The next day at school, Erica tracked down Scott and Stiles to update them.  She wasn’t sure how she felt being the messenger between the boys and her alpha all the time, but she figured it was better than them not communicating at all.  They weren’t too thrilled that Derek was casually poisoning their classmates, but at least he was being selective and quiet about it, and he was providing them with more information on the kanima.  Erica tried to avoid watching Stiles’s reaction when she told them they would be testing Lydia next, but when he made a disgruntled noise, she assured him they wouldn’t kill Lydia even if she was the kanima.  They walked to Economics together, Erica taking her usual spot in the back next to where Lydia had settled into a desk.
Watching Lydia freak out the way she did during class was concerning to say the least.  When Stiles sent her the picture of the board flipped to reveal what Lydia had written, she felt even worse.  Something was wrong with Lydia, and whether it was that she was the kanima or something else, Erica felt compelled to help her.  When Lydia took her seat again, Erica held out a tissue to her.  Lydia took it with a sniffle, dabbing at her eyes and cheeks to clear the tears without smudging her makeup.
“You seem stressed, Lydia,” Erica observed, leaning across the aisle towards her desk with a sympathetic frown.  “You know what I think you need?  A girl’s night.  My parents are out of town, and I was thinking of making some smoothies, watching some Nicholas Sparks movies, and maybe ordering some Indian takeout.  Want to join me?  We can invite Allison.”
“That sounds kind of perfect, actually,” Lydia admitted, smiling softly over at Erica.  “Thanks.”
“Hey, bad bitches like us need to stick together, right?” Erica offered, shooting her a wink before smiling when Lydia chuckled.  “You have chemistry next period too, right?”
“Yeah, and so does Allison,” Lydia nodded.
“I’ll invite her then and if she’s on board, we can all meet at your locker after school,” Erica declared, giving her one last smile before refocusing on the lesson.  She caught Scott’s stare out of the corner of her eye, but she remained focused.  This was her plan to create and her plan to complete.
Sitting in Chemistry class, Mr. Harris surprised them all by declaring they would be performing a round of group experiments.  He would be pairing people up and placing them at stations, but after assigning Erica to the first station, he found most of the male members (and a couple of the female members) of the class had raised their hands to volunteer to be her partner.
“I didn’t ask for volunteers,” Mr. Harris grumbled while Erica struggled to hide her smirk.  “Put your hormonal little hands down.  Start with Mr. McCall.”
Erica’s smirk slipped a little, her eyes shifting from Scott to Allison, who did not look too pleased with Mr. Harris’s decision.  He continued pairing people together at different stations before announcing that they could begin.  Scott barely completed the first step of their lab assignment before starting to talk about her plan.
“I’m sure you’ve thought about this already, but what happens if Lydia is the kanima and she turns while she’s at your house?” Scott questioned.  “Better yet, what happens to Allison?”
“Do you seriously think I would let anything happen to the girl you love?” she countered, looking over at him fiercely.  She tried to continue the experiment, pinching her lips together as she steadied her breathing.  “Derek will be in the pool house with Isaac and Boyd in case anything goes wrong.  You’re more than welcome to wait with them.”
“Pass,” Scott replied, shaking his head.  He worked for a little while as well, but he hated the silence that settled so easily between them.  “I miss you.”
“I’m right here, Scott,” she sighed.  “You just have different priorities now.  And so do I.”
“Like Derek?” he questioned.  “You…  You smell more like him.  The way Allison smells like me sometimes.”
“I kissed him,” she acknowledged, refusing to watch his reaction as she continued working.  “We’re not together, and we won’t be any time soon, if ever.”
“You can do better than Derek,” he muttered.  “You deserve better.”
“Actually, I think Derek would be really good for me, if we were both ready for something like that,” she disagreed.  “In fact, I could do a lot worse than him, and I probably will do a lot worse than him because no matter what I think I deserve, I have a really bad habit of wanting guys that don’t want me.”
“You could do better than Derek,” Scott repeated, firmly.  “You should go for someone better than him.  Someone that’s loyal and will take care of you.  Someone that is nice and doesn’t do bad things or act like a dick all the time.  Someone like-”
“You?” Erica finished, giving him a knowing look when he pinched his lips together.  “You think a guy like you would go for a girl like me?”
“You’re not my type,” Scott played along, the lie leaving his lips as he shrugged.
“I’m exactly your type,” she challenged, her expression softening when his intense eyes met hers.  She wondered if she should take back all she had said, or clarify what she had left ambiguous, but then Mr. Harris was ringing the bell and Scott was leaving her station.  Before she focused on her own experiment, she noticed Isaac watching her as he sat next to Stiles.  While she couldn’t prove it, she was pretty sure Isaac and Boyd, and potentially Derek as well, had talked about her complicated history with Scott and Stiles.  She wasn’t even sure when they had talked about it, but over the last week or so, Isaac would nudge her anytime one of them would go by or lurk nearby anytime she was talking to them.  Knowing he was now forced to work with Stiles had her focusing on their conversation, leaving her partner to complete the next step of their experiment alone.
“I’ve been hoping I’d get a chance to chat with you, Stiles,” Isaac declared, watching him work on the experiment.  “You know, you and I have a few things in common.”
“You don’t say?” Stiles retorted.
“We both lost our moms, we both care about Erica, and we both got rejected by Lydia Martin,” Isaac explained.
“Sounds like the beginning to a heartfelt story,” Stiles observed.  “I’m gonna pass, thanks.”
Isaac began telling it anyway, letting Stiles do all the work on the experiment.  “It was the first day of freshman year.”
“And you thought everything was gonna be different for you in high school, but she said ‘no’,” Stiles concluded correctly.
“Yeah,” Isaac laughed dryly.  “Yeah, she even laughed.  Told me to come back when the bike I rode to school had an engine, not a chain.”
“Mm, unrequited love’s a bitch,” Stiles snarked.  “Maybe you should write about it in English class.  Channel all of that negative energy.”
“Is that what Erica did?” Isaac countered, smirking at how caught off-guard Stiles was by that question.  “I mean, she’s an expert on the subject.”
“What would Erica know about unrequited love?” Stiles questioned, shaking his head confusedly.
“You really don’t see it, do you?” Isaac said, but before Stiles could ask him about it, the bell was being rung, and partners were switching once more.  Isaac moved to sit next to Lydia, while Scott and Stiles sat together and Erica was paired with Allison.
“I invited Lydia over to my house after school,” Erica told Allison.  “She had a moment in Economics so I invited her over for smoothies and chick flicks.  I also told her I’d invite you.”
“That was nice of you,” Allison commented.
“Before you agree, I want to be honest with you,” Erica began, facing Allison more fully.  The look Allison gave her made her think she was expecting her to talk about something different than what she ended up saying.  “Derek suspects Lydia is the kanima, so he asked me to test her by slipping her some of the toxin.  I wanted to do it somewhere she’d be safe, and comfortable, so that’s why I really invited her over.”
“I see,” Allison nodded, glancing over at Scott who was pretending not to watch the exchange.  “You’re not going to slip me any of the toxin, right?”
“What?” Erica laughed, looking over at her.  “Why would I do that?”
“I don’t really know what to expect from you now that you’re with Derek, Erica,” Allison admitted.  “You know, I really thought that we were becoming friends, and then you became a werewolf and I-”
“So you’re okay with dating Scott in secret even though he’s a werewolf, but you can’t figure out a way to stay my friend?” Erica questioned.
“No, that’s not what I’m saying,” Allison insisted.  “It’s just different now.  I guess I just haven’t adjusted to the change yet, but I want to.  I really want us to be friends.”
“I want that, too,” Erica assured her.  “So come over today.  You, me, and Lydia.  That’s one hell of a trio if I’ve ever heard one.”
“Alright, I’m in,” Allison agreed, smiling softly.
The bell rang one last time, indicating the end of the experiment, and they all looked at their final results.  Allison and Erica decided not to eat their rock candy, as it looked a little foggy and not quite right.  When the class ended, they all went their separate ways, Erica briefly assuring Lydia that Allison was going to be joining them and sending a text to Derek to confirm details of the plan.  The rest of the day passed by easily, and soon enough, the three girls were leaving for Allison’s car together.  While Scott wanted to leave with them, Coach Finstock soon brought an issue with the equipment to his attention, and as co-captain, he needed to investigate.  He told Stiles to go without him and that he would meet up with everyone later.
Erica tried to ignore the sight of Roscoe following behind them, her head shaking slightly as she kept Lydia engaged in conversation.  Once they got inside, she focused on the vehicle and noticed only one heartbeat, which meant Scott wasn’t with Stiles.  Wondering where her other friend was left her a little distracted and prevented her from being as open as she wanted to be with their girl talk.  What they did discuss left her realizing how much she needed this sort of female camaraderie in her life.  Halfway through the first movie, Erica brought out the smoothies, meeting Allison’s eyes as she handed Lydia the one that had the toxin in it.  The two girls watched the genius drink the smoothie, and when she did not react after finishing the entire beverage, they both swallowed dryly.
Making excuses, Erica stepped away from their movie marathon and texted Derek, Scott, and Stiles separately.  She heard the sound of the Jeep as Stiles drove the short distance to the front of her house, his footsteps soon following as he ran up the steps and rang the doorbell frantically.  She opened the door, loudly questioning what he was doing there, before he spun a lie that he was freaking out about Coach Finstock’s test and figured he could come over to study.  His pretend surprise at Lydia and Allison’s presence in her living room nearly had her rolling her eyes.  She was about to close her door when she heard another car approaching, her brows furrowing when Jackson parked his Porsche in front of the Jeep and sauntered up her front walk.
“Don’t tell me Stiles invited you over to study tonight, too?” Erica asked, more to provide a cover story for him than anything else.  “What are you doing here?” she added in a whisper once he was close enough she could grab his arm.
“I need to talk to Lydia,” he told her.  At her look of feigned confusion, he rolled his eyes.  “I know she’s here.  I was there when you invited her over during Economics.  I won’t stay longer than it takes to get what I want and then I’ll be out of your hair.  I promise.”
“You can ask, but if she doesn’t want to talk to you, you have to leave,” she decided, letting him inside.
Everyone stopped what they were doing when Jackson entered the living room, his eyes shifting from person to person before landing on Lydia.  “I need to talk to you for a minute.”
“Seriously?” she sighed, standing from her seat and following him up the stairs.  “What is going on with everyone?”
“Where’s Scott?” Allison voiced first, Erica glancing over at her as she briefly wondered if she had somehow read her mind.
“He said he needed to look into something, but he’ll be here,” Stiles assured her.  “Where’s Derek?”
“Right here,” came a voice from the back of the house.  Derek, Boyd, and Isaac walked towards them, stopping beside Erica before Derek glanced upstairs.  “She failed the test.”
“So we know that it’s her, but we don’t know why,” Erica reminded him.  “We don’t know if there’s a way to fix this somehow.”
“What if there isn’t?” Stiles questioned.
“Yeah, are you just going to kill Lydia?” Allison added.
“If we have to,” Derek growled.  “These are the hard decisions that a bunch of teenagers aren’t ready to make.  That’s why I’m here.”
“You can’t kill Lydia,” Stiles argued, moving towards Derek.
“Alright, enough,” Erica insisted, standing in front of Derek to block Stiles’s path.  “Right now, we just need to keep her here and watch over her until we can figure out a way to help her.”
“Maybe I should call my dad,” Allison suggested.
“Is that such a good idea?” Isaac questioned.
“He might have answers, solutions we don’t know about,” Allison explained, pinching her lips together.
“If you can manage to ask him without making it seem like you’re intentionally trying to get information, go right ahead,” Derek told her.  “Our priority is securing Lydia inside the house.  Boyd, Isaac, come with me.  Stiles, you might want to think about heading home.”
“Derek,” Erica scolded, shaking her head.
“Why would I leave?” Stiles asked him.
“Because you’re the only one without a role here, and the last thing I need is my beta being distracted by you,” Derek declared, avoiding Erica’s glare as he turned and walked out of the house, Boyd and Isaac following after him.  Allison glanced at the two remaining before pulling her phone out and tapping it to indicate she was going to call her dad after all.  She walked out the door the rest of the pack had exited through, leaving Stiles and Erica alone.
“I think we should talk,” Stiles told her.  “Because it seems like everyone’s in on something except me, and it’s messing with my head.  You are messing with my head.”
“Oh I am?” Erica scoffed, walking away from him to clean up the living room, just to have something to do.  “What have I done to mess with your head?”
“Well, for starters, there’s what Scott said months ago during the full moon,” Stiles started, following after her as he listed everything that had been confusing him about her.  “Granted, I tried not to think about everything he said, because I knew that wasn’t really him.  But everything changed after you got the Bite.  There was what you said and did outside of Boyd’s house.  And then Derek said something when we were in the pool, and Isaac said something during Chemistry today.”
“You can’t be mad at me for what other people have said to you,” she shook her head, poking at his chest.  “And I’ve explained what happened outside of Boyd’s house.”
“No you haven’t!” he shouted, his arms and hands extended at his sides.  “You haven’t explained anything!  Every time I bring up something you don’t like, you just push me away, or make an excuse, but I deserve answers, Erica!  I deserve to know the truth!  What are you hiding from me?”
“I’m not hiding anything!” she shot back, exasperated as she took a shaky breath.  “That’s the sad part, Stiles!  Everyone sees it but you!”
“Sees what?!” he demanded, gripping her upper arms as he pleaded for an answer.  Before she could respond, Scott was barging inside, Allison following behind him as she seemed to be trying to get him to stop.  Stiles let Erica go, stepping back from her, his hands falling to his sides.  “What’s going on?”
“You tell me,” Scott replied, his tone harsh.  “I heard you two blocks away.  What the hell is going on?”
“Nothing,” Erica answered, shaking her head.
“What’s happening?” Lydia asked, standing halfway down the stairs and looking down at them all.  “What’s with all the yelling?”
“Sorry,” Stiles muttered, rubbing the back of his neck as his eyes darted over to Erica.
“Lydia, where’s Jackson?” Erica questioned.
“We were talking in your room,” Lydia told her, walking back towards the room.  “Jackson?”  Erica was on the way up the stairs before Lydia could yell back, “He’s not here!”
Erica looked around the bedroom and found the open window, her heart sinking.  “It’s Jackson,” she breathed, looking up when Scott, Stiles, and Allison joined them.  “Allison, stay here with Lydia,” she instructed, rushing back downstairs as Scott and Stiles followed her.  She left the house, meeting Derek outside while Boyd and Isaac watched the house from opposite ends of the property.  “What do we do?”  Before the alpha could give any orders, they heard something scurry across the roof.  They looked up to see the kanima appear by a top level, hiss at them, and leap to a nearby roof before disappearing into the night.

I should be doing things productive, I should be making myself a new cog for the machine.
Instead I am going to watch A Haunting while being teased by my cats, who wish me not to pet them, but who I wish to pet.

If you had to make an all-black or an all-poc Six cast (including alts), what would it be?
I did one here that’s all extremely established stars. But as far as who I would cast irregardless of how well known they are, here’s what I came up with. There’s intentionally no overlap with the dreamcast I did of the incredibly established names.
Tumblr media
Cherry Torres as Aragon Julia K Harriman as Boleyn Shoba Narayan as Seymour Nasia Thomas as Cleves Loren Lott as Howard Ari Afsar as Parr
Tumblr media
Jerica Exum as A/S/P alt Jerusha Cavazos as A/C/H alt Kendyl Sayuri Yokoyama as B/S/H alt Shantel Cribbs as B/C/P alt
Also went for universal swings, because boy does the US need them  Kayla Davion as A/S/C alt Isa Camille Briones as B/H/P alt Someday I swear I will make a dreamcast that’s less heavily Hamilton. Today is not that day, clearly.

Care to share the insanely detailed outline you have of the Erica/Joshua backstory? I’m curious now haha
Catherine decides at the beginning of Erica’s first year that she’s going to divorce Alexander
Erica gets to school excited that she’ll be around other people with similar interests
Realizes that she’s way more invested than anyone else at the school by a long shot
Like, people don’t hate her, but they don’t get her single-minded dedication and the fact that she feels the need to be doing it every minute
Doesn't end up making any friends with people in her class because they're not entirely sure how to carry on a conversation with her
(just because this sounds a lot like my own middle school experience doesn't mean i'm projecting, how dare you think that)
Joshua is the orientation guide and he irritates Erica by his very presence
At SACSAs they end up on opposite teams and subsequently in hand to hand combat that she wins
Erica goes to the shooting range a lot
Joshua goes there too a lot because he’s also super dedicated to being a really good spy
Takes the one next to her because it’s the only one available
Mentions something about her marksmanship, but she either dismisses it (I’ve been doing this my whole life, what did you expect?) or straight up ignores him
Joshua doesn’t try to say anything after that
After a couple months Joshua doesn’t show up one day and Erica is mildly concerned, but snoops around and finds out that he went to someone’s birthday party
“Goodness gracious, Hale, sounds like you might have missed me” “I didn’t though”
Erica and Joshua sort of become friends and there’s definitely a mutual crush thing going on, but neither of them do anything about it
SPYDER approaches Joshua at the end of the school year for information on the Hales and offers him a pretty hefty sum
This gives Joshua the confidence to ask Erica out on a date
They hang out a lot over the summer at Spy Camp, Joshua shows her around, they explore other parts
Somewhere along the line Erica trusts him enough to tell him about her family situation
Joshua gives SPYDER the information they want, leaves out the part about Catherine, and decides that that’s going to be the last he has to do with the organization (emphasize that he’s not full on evil yet or anything, he just got offered a lot of money and didn’t see the harm)
Also no Joshua POV, this is all just context for what’s going on with him, this is mainly and primarily about Erica
Second year of Spy School goes well, Erica and Joshua hang out less because it would be harder to keep it secret in less space, but they work out a way to exchange notes with each other, hang out sometimes
Next summer SPYDER hires Joshua for a more involved job, and due to different schedules, Erica doesn’t notice he’s not where he’s supposed to be the whole time
Erica begins to get suspicious, but is too nervous to say anything at first, but gets the guts to confront him right before Thanksgiving break
Joshua tells SPYDER that Erica’s beginning to catch onto him (will soon)
Joshua “dies” between Thanksgiving break and Christmas break
Potential epilogue where Erica finds out the plan to recruit Ben

begin to knowing, CH. 12
aka my rewrite of season 1 of Teen Wolf based on the question: what if Erica was best friends with Scott and Stiles from the beginning?
Scott is on the run after the Argents reveal what he is to Allison. When Peter attacks Lydia, Erica helps Jackson and Stiles save her. The final battle at the Hale house leads to a decision that will change everything.
CHAPTER TWELVE - CODE BREAKER (click to read on AO3)
By the time Erica made it outside, Scott was leaping over the bus and running into the night.  She was about to go back and find Jackson when she saw the door to the bus open and watched Allison step out.  Allison knew that Scott was the other beta.  Allison knew that Scott was a werewolf.  Backing into the school, Erica nearly tripped as she rushed back inside, only to run into Jackson.  He told her about the call with Stiles, begging her to help him.  If it wasn’t for the blatant and sincere panic in his voice and on his face, she might have refused him.  Instead, they ran together to the lacrosse field, finding a far too still, far too bloody Lydia.  Jackson quickly picked her up, and they raced towards the school to get help.
In the whirlwind that followed, Erica had a hard time keeping her head on straight.  When she wasn’t trying to pay attention to Jackson as he drove them to the hospital, she was worrying about Scott, who was somewhere out in the woods with the hunters out to get him, and Stiles, who was at the mercy of Peter Hale.  She was still reeling as they pulled up at the hospital and made their way up to Lydia’s floor, only focusing when the Sheriff started yelling at Jackson.
“Sheriff, he’s telling the truth,” Erica intervened after Jackson was pressed up against the glass.  They both looked over at her, her hands reaching up to pull the older man’s arms back.  “Trust me, you’re going to want to let him go,” she added, leading him away from Jackson so they could talk somewhat privately.  “Jackson didn’t take Lydia to the formal, Stiles did, but she left him to look for Jackson and ended up outside.  Stiles was with Scott when Jackson and I found Lydia together.”  Erica was surprised in herself for how easily she was able to lie.  “It wasn’t Jackson’s fault, and we don’t know what happened to Lydia.”
“Where is my son now?” Sheriff Stilinski demanded, gripping her arm but not too firmly.  “Is he okay?”
“I don’t know,” she admitted.  She didn’t want to lie about that, not to Stiles’s own father.
He nodded, taking a deep breath before looking her over more carefully.  “Are you okay?  Jackson didn’t do anything to you, did he?  Because I wouldn’t mind intimidating him some more on your behalf.”
“Jackson wasn’t my date either,” she shook her head.  With a soft laugh, she added, “I don’t even know if I’d call him a friend yet, but I can handle him.  Thanks for the offer though.  Mind if I go over and calm him down before he has a panic attack?”
“Yeah, sweetheart, go right ahead,” he nodded, patting her arm as he let her go.
Erica walked back over to Jackson, who was looking through the glass at Lydia’s prone form in the hospital bed.  Her hand slipped into his without a second thought, and he clung to it desperately.  “She’s going to be okay,” she assured him, more hopeful than confident.  “She’ll be a wolf, but she’ll be okay.”
“Of course she would end up one before me,” Jackson managed with a dry chuckle.  His next breath was shaky as he glanced down at her, his jaw clenching before he requested, “Don’t leave.”
“I won’t,” she promised, giving his hand a quick squeeze.  She returned her attention to Lydia, Jackson doing the same, and they stood vigil as they waited for her to wake up.  At some point, he needed to use the bathroom, so she decided to get them some coffee.  It took her a little while to find the machine, which had to be ancient for how long it took to make two cups of coffee.  As she returned, she noticed Allison walking back towards the elevator.  “Allison, wait!” she called out to her, but the doors closed and she was gone again.  Jackson soon returned, and she silently handed him his coffee before sipping at hers in unison with him.
The next person to show up to check on Lydia was Stiles, who came rushing towards them only to be intercepted by his dad.  Stiles’s eyes quickly locked with Erica’s before he focused on his dad’s rant and threats.  Erica, however, made her way over to them, grasping Stiles’s extended hand when he asked if Lydia was going to be okay.  She remained quiet as his dad explained Lydia’s status, having already heard it all from him as he had learned it.  What was happening to Lydia didn’t make much sense to her, but she didn’t think it was a good sign after being bitten by a werewolf.
“Did you see anything?” the Sheriff asked Stiles.  “I mean, do you have any idea who or what attacked her?”
Stiles took a deep breath, hating having to lie to his dad but knowing he didn’t have much of a choice.  “No.  No, I have no idea.”
“I told you, he had been with Scott when it happened,” Erica reminded, giving Stiles a look.
“Yeah, he wouldn’t know either,” Stiles quickly added, accepting her story without hesitation.  “Wait, is he not here?”
“I’ve been calling him on his cell phone,” his dad said.  “I’ve gotten no response.”
“He lost his phone,” Erica explained.  “You know, I bet Coach Finstock caught him.  He wasn’t supposed to be at the dance.  He probably got sent home, and since he doesn’t have his phone, he doesn’t know what happened.”
Before the Sheriff could question her story, he was getting pulled away by one of his deputies.  As per usual, Stiles eavesdropped and then immediately started harassing his dad about the case he was working.  While the two Stilinski men argued back and forth, Erica followed, observing as she always did.  Only when the Sheriff had to answer a call did she voice her thoughts on the investigation.
“A woman in her late 20s?” she repeated.  “A distinct pendant…  How much do you want to bet Allison got that necklace as a gift?”
“Oh,” Stiles said, realization dawning on him.  “I need to go, but Lydia-”
“You go,” Erica insisted.  “It’s Batman’s turn to save the day.  Catwoman will watch over Rachel.”
“Rachel died in the movies, Erica,” Stiles reminded her, his expression unamused.
“Bad metaphor, but you get my point,” she waved off, pushing him towards the exit.
They walked back out past Lydia’s room, drawing Jackson’s attention to them.  “Hey, where are you guys going?”
“I’m not going anywhere,” Erica told him, slowing so she could meet him then walking by his side when he kept following Stiles.
“To find Scott,” Stiles answered.
“You don’t have a car,” Jackson pointed out.
“I’m aware of that, thank you,” Stiles snapped.
“Stiles, I think he’s offering his car,” Erica pointed out, rolling her eyes.
“I’ll drive,” Jackson nodded.  “Come on.”
“Look, just because you feel guilty all of a sudden doesn’t make it okay, alright?” Stiles brushed him off.  “Half of this is still your fault.  She went looking for you, and you were too busy selling out one of my best friends and hitting on the other one.”
“Stiles,” Erica scolded, shaking her head.
“Look, I have a car.  You don’t,” Jackson stated plainly.  “Do you want my help or not?”
“Alright, did you bring the Porsche?” Stiles asked.
“Yeah,” Jackson nodded, pulling the keys out of his pocket.
“Good.  I’ll drive,” Stiles declared, snatching the keys from him and turning to leave, only to come face to face with Chris Argent and two of his hunters.
Erica quickly moved herself behind Stiles and Jackson, her hand latching onto Stiles’s instinctually.  She was able to play into the same story she had stuck to that night like Stiles did, but then Jackson struggled, and they knew they were screwed.  They found themselves thrown into an empty room, Chris locking the doors and making it clear they were not leaving until he got the answers he wanted.  He started by roughing Stiles up a bit, Erica pleading with them not to hurt him before she was yanked back by the hunter restraining her.
The story Chris gave them was dark and twisted, and it would have been effective if they didn’t know the truth.  Stiles threw what they had discovered right in Chris’s face the first chance he got, Erica pinching her lips together at how bold he was being.  She worried Chris would lash out, but instead, he pulled back and tried to dispel the rumor that the Argents were behind the Hale fire.  Eventually, Stiles was able to get Chris to see what he did not want to see: Kate had planned the fire that wiped out most of the Hale family.
When the hunters left, Erica made her way back over to Stiles, checking him over to make sure he was okay.  “This started with the Hale house.  It’ll end there too,” she told him.  Her eyes caught sight of the nearby cabinet of chemicals, and she got an idea.  “Stiles, do you remember what Lydia asked for when they were making the molotov cocktails?”
“I remember,” Jackson chimed in.
It didn’t take long for them to create two fire bombs, and soon, Erica was alone outside of Lydia’s hospital room.  She knew it had been the right decision to stay, because it meant she was safe and not acting as a distraction, but she hated having to wait.  She hated not knowing if the people she cared most about were okay or not.  She hated wondering if she would ever see them again, or if she would be left holding onto the last memories she had with them.
As the hours went by, she grew tired, and found a chair outside of Lydia’s room.  She wasn’t sure how long she slept for, but a tap on her leg woke her up and had her nearly jumping out of her seat.  “Stiles!” she scolded, resisting the urge to kick the boy crouching down by her knees.  Scott was behind him, putting a finger to his lips before gesturing for her to follow them.  Together, the three of them crouch-walked into Lydia’s room and started closing the door, cringing at how squeaky the door was until it was shut.  They stood and walked over to Lydia’s bedside, Scott peeling back her bandage to reveal it was not healing the way his bite had healed.
“She’s not a werewolf,” Scott declared.
“Then what the hell is she?” Stiles wondered.
“She’s going to live,” Erica reminded them.  “What happened at the Hale house?”
“Do you want the long version or the short version?” Stiles asked her.
“Stiles,” she snapped.
“Peter killed Kate.  Derek killed Peter.  Derek’s now the alpha,” Stiles summarized.  Erica nodded slowly, absorbing what he said before turning and making her way to the door.  “Woah, wait.  Where are you going?”
“To see Derek.  You guys can watch over her now,” Erica told them.  Without another word, she left, leaving her best friends bewildered as they watched her go.
It took her a bit longer than she would have liked to get to Derek’s house, but as she walked up the front steps, she felt a rush of confidence.  Just when she had lifted her hand to knock on the door, it was swinging open, and Derek was looking down at her.  He opened his mouth, but before he could speak, she beat him to it.
“Peter offered me the bite, and I said no, but not because I don’t want to be a werewolf,” she rushed out.  “I didn’t want to be in Peter’s pack, but I want the seizures to stop.  I want to be your beta, Derek.”
“You don’t know what you’re asking for,” he shook his head, even as he took a step closer to her.  “It might not even work, and then you’ll die.”
“I’m willing to take that risk,” she shrugged, remaining still with her chin up as he moved even closer.
“I’m not,” he told her, his hand reaching up as if he was going to tug on her hair like he usually did but pausing to feel the softer ends of it between his fingertips instead.  She was still dressed in her formal dress, with her hair and makeup still done up.  He hadn’t seen her in a while, and after everything Kate had done to his head, it was strange to see her looking so different.  Not bad, just strange.  “I need a pack.”
“And I need control over my body and my life,” she replied, reaching up to cover his hand with her own.  “I can get that by joining your pack.  Please.”
“Okay,” he nodded, accepting her decision even if it wasn’t the one he would have chosen for her.  It was her life, and if what she wanted was to be a werewolf, he was going to give that to her.  If it so happened to provide an advantage to him by adding to his strength as an alpha, then that was just an added bonus.  “Not here.  Can we go back to the pool house?”
“Yeah, Derek.  We can go to the pool house,” she agreed, smiling softly.  All of the tension that had been there during their conversation about her joining his pack seemed to slip away in that moment, and she exhaled before stepping into his arms.  “Being pack means you won’t disappear on me like that again, right?”
“Ideally, yes, but with our luck, who knows,” he joked, brushing a hand over her head before settling it on her back.  “I finally got a taste of my own medicine though.”
“Yeah?  How’s that?” she wondered, pulling back to look up at him.  Her expression softened when he slid some of her hair behind her ear.
“I worried about you the entire time I was gone,” he admitted.
“Derek!” they heard from behind them, and they pulled away fully from each other as Jackson came storming up the steps.  “Erica, what are you doing here?”
“I could ask you the same question,” she retorted.
“I helped Derek,” he stated, shifting his attention to the man angling a step between them.  “I helped save you.  Okay, you got what you wanted.  You got what you wanted.  Now, it’s my turn to get what I want.”
“Oh god, if he’s going to be in the pack too, I change my mind,” she declared, throwing her hands into the air.
“First of all, no one asked you,” Derek snapped at Erica, causing her to pinch her lips together.  “Second, the only person that decides who is in my pack is me.”
“I was totally joking,” Erica defended, crossing her arms over her chest.
“Third,” Derek continued, facing Jackson.  “You’re not my priority right now.  She is.”
“Wait, seriously?  You’re going to turn her?” Jackson exclaimed.
“I want her first,” Derek repeated, his voice bordering on a growl.  “Once I know she has accepted the bite, I’ll come find you, and then we’ll talk.”  When Jackson opened his mouth, Derek quickly added.  “This is not up for discussion.”
“Fine, whatever,” Jackson grumbled, turning to leave before stopping and glancing back at Erica.  “Are you sure this is what you want?”
“I have more of a reason for wanting it then you do,” she told him, giving him a knowing look.  “I’ll be fine, and soon enough, we’ll all be pack.”  Jackson smirked at that, nodding in appreciation before turning and walking away.  When Erica faced Derek again, he was squinting at her curiously, a hint of a smile on his lips.  “What?”
“I’m really glad I’m going to make you my first beta,” Derek admitted, wrapping an arm around her shoulders before leading her away from his house.  He ended up carrying her on his back for most of the trek to her house, especially since he could run faster than the average man and get them there without detection.  Soon enough, she’d be able to do all of that on her own, but for now, he’d do it for both of them.
Derek lowered her back onto her feet when they reached her backyard, Erica promising to join him in the pool house before disappearing inside.  As much as she loved her formal dress, she didn’t want it to get ruined, so she went right up to her room to change into a pair of pajama shorts and an old t-shirt.  She fed Ellie, let her outside to use the bathroom, then started gathering items she might need.  She had no idea what being bitten would feel like, but she had seen the aftermath when Scott had come to her house the night he had been bitten.  She remembered the state he had been in, the size of the injury, and how painful it had looked.  That alone scared her, but surely it couldn’t be any worse than the kind of pain she had dealt with for most of her life.  With Ellie back inside, and her arms full of first aid supplies, she returned to the pool house.
“Are you sure this is what you want?” Derek asked her once more as she laid out her supplies.  His arms were crossed firmly over his chest, watching her with his eyebrows cinched together.  “This isn’t something you can change your mind about later.  Once I bite you, there’s no turning back.”
“I know,” Erica nodded, wiping her hands on the sides of her shirt.
“What about the hunters?  Have you thought about that?” he reminded her, frowning when she chuckled and took a step towards him.  “It’s not funny, Erica.  Your life will be in danger if we do this.”
“My life’s in danger now,” she insisted, gently uncrossing his arms and rubbing his arms comfortingly.  “As long as Scott is a werewolf, I will always be involved in this world.  At least if I’m like you and him, I’ll have more of a chance to fight for my own survival.”
“I would protect you,” he offered.  “I could keep you safe.”
“You could,” she nodded.  “But you can’t always protect me.  I want to be able to protect myself.  I need to be able to protect myself.”
“I won’t be able to change your mind, will I?” Derek sighed.
“Have you been able to do that with anything else so far?” she countered, chuckling once more before reaching down to give his hands a quick squeeze.  “I want this.  I choose this.  And I choose you.  I want to be your beta.  I want to be in your pack, and I’m prepared to deal with whatever that might mean.”
Derek nodded, swallowing dryly as he realized the next part was all him.  He had never turned someone before, and the last thing he wanted to do was hurt her more than he needed to.  He looked her over, trying to decide where the best place to bite her would be.  With his hands still in hers, he began guiding her backwards towards the couch.  When the back of her knees bumped against it, he had her sit down and crouched down in front of her, lifting her hands to settle on his shoulders.  “Thigh or arm?”
“W-What?” she muttered, blinking up at him.
“Do you want me to bite your thigh or your arm?” he asked again, his hands settling on her knees and his thumbs brushing along her skin to try to ease her justified fear.  “I figure biting is kind of like tattooing, and those areas are the least painful to get tattoos.”
“Right,” Erica laughed nervously, her tongue darting out against her lips as she thought about it.  Her arm would probably be easier, but she thought about how Peter almost bit her there, and she didn’t want to be reminded of him.  “C-Can you bite my thigh?”
“Yeah,” he nodded, offering a small smile.  “Lay down for me,” he instructed, helping her get comfortable with her head on the arm of the couch, offering a pillow for her to hold onto.  He settled on his knees next to her, reaching up to give her hair a quick tug to elicit a smile from her.  His hands moved back to her leg, his eyes glowing red as he focused on the supple thigh before him.  He smoothed his fingers over her smooth skin, a growl growing deep in his throat when she shivered and her skin pebbled where he had touched her.  “Last chance,” he warned, meeting her eyes as his fangs elongated and thicker hair sprouted up around his face.  “Tell me you want this.  One last time, please.”
“Derek,” she breathed, reaching over to place one of her hands over his.  “I want this.”
With another nod, Derek started lowering his head.  Erica started tensing up the moment she thought she was going to be bitten, and he could sense it.  Instead of feeling his sharp fangs puncture her skin, she was surprised to feel his soft lips pressing a gentle kiss against her thigh.  “It’ll hurt more if you don’t relax,” he explained.  “Do you trust me?”
“Yes,” she answered without a breath of hesitation.  She closed her eyes and forced herself to take slow breaths until she felt most of the panic start to slip away.  Her eyes opened when she felt him kiss her leg again, her body only relaxing fully when he turned his hand to hold hers more securely.  “I’m ready.”
Derek giving her the Bite was something she knew would be burned into her memory forever.  One moment, his lips were resting against her skin, and the next, his fangs were tearing through her flesh.  She squeezed his hand tightly, letting out a cry of pain before it was suddenly over.  She thought she felt his tongue lap at the blood that dripped down her thigh, but when she opened her eyes, his eyes were back to their piercing hazel and the blood was cleaned from his face.  Her eyes shifted down to where a bite mark was now clearly visible on her leg.
“That… wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be,” she admitted, watching as he reached over for some first aid supplies and started cleaning her up.  “Are you sure that’s all you need to do?”
“I’m pretty sure,” he nodded, an amused smirk on his lips.  “How are you feeling?”
“Fine,” she told him.  “Am I supposed to feel different?”
“It’s probably too soon,” he mused.  “The adrenaline is probably going to keep you up for a little while, and then you’ll crash.  I’ll stay up to keep an eye on you and make sure nothing goes wrong.”
“I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep anytime soon,” she muttered, waiting until he had smoothed a gauze bandage over her bite and taped it down before sitting up on the couch.  “I want to hear about what happened while you were gone.”
Derek groaned, standing from where he had been kneeling and starting to clean up the supplies.  “I don’t really want to talk about that,” he stated.  “Nothing good happened while I was gone, alright?”  He brought the first aid supplies over to the kitchen and placed them on the small counter in case they needed them later.  “Kate was the one that took me.  Kept me strung up and tortured me for a few days.”
“Derek,” she gaped, standing to walk over to him before wincing at the pain in her leg.  Suddenly he was by her side, his hands on her waist to stabilize her.  Her eyes met his before gently cupping his cheek.  “I’m sorry she hurt you.  I would say I feel bad that Peter killed her, but she would have just kept hurting you, and Scott, and everyone else we care about.”
“She would have,” Derek agreed, his eyes closing as he leaned into her touch.  It was such a vulnerable moment, something that didn’t happen often for him, but long before he even had the ability to give her the bite, she had felt like pack.  She had been someone he could depend on, and show his true colors around.  His eyes opened again to look her over, the concern in her eyes making his breathing stutter.  He needed this to work.  He needed her to survive the bite.  He couldn’t lose her on top of everyone else he’d lost.  A sudden yawn from her had him chuckling, his hand lifting to remove hers before leading her back over to the couch.  “Even if you don’t think you’ll sleep, you should rest.  Your body will take some time to adjust to the change.”
“I’ll rest if you rest,” she argued, letting him sit her down but not getting comfortable until he had settled down beside her.  Erica had barely curled up against Derek’s side, her bitten leg on display, before she had fallen asleep.  Derek couldn’t help the fond smile he had as he wrapped his arm tighter around her and let his own eyes fall closed.
They slept for a few hours, Derek waking up every hour or so out of panic and drifting back to sleep only when he heard her steady heartbeat beside him.  Around 8 o’clock that morning, Ellie woke up and started barking up a storm from inside the house.  The fact that both of them woke up to this ruckus and not just Derek told them all they needed to know.  Erica Reyes was a werewolf.
