Jeremiah Complains to the LORD

1 Whenever I complain to you, LORD, you are always fair. But now I have questions about your justice. Why is life easy for sinners? Why are they successful?

2 You plant them like trees; you let them prosper and produce fruit. Yet even when they praise you, they don't mean it.

3 But you know, LORD, how faithful I've always been, even in my thoughts. So drag my enemies away and butcher them like sheep!

4 How long will the ground be dry and the pasturelands parched? The birds and animals are dead and gone.

And all of this happened because the people are so sinful. They even brag, “God can't see the sins we commit.”

The LORD Answers Jeremiah

5 Jeremiah, if you get tired in a race against people, how can you possibly run against horses?

If you fall in open fields, what will happen in the forest along the Jordan River?

6 Even your own family has turned against you. They act friendly, but don't trust them. They're out to get you, and so is everyone else.

The LORD Is Furious with His People

7 I loved my people and chose them as my very own. But now I will reject them and hand them over to their enemies.

8 My people have turned against me and roar at me like lions. That's why I hate them.

9 My people are like a hawk surrounded and attacked by other hawks. Tell the wild animals to come and eat their fill.

10 My beautiful land is ruined like a field or a vineyard trampled by shepherds and stripped bare by their flocks.

11 Every field I see lies barren, and no one cares.

12 A destroying army marches along desert roads and attacks everywhere. They are my deadly sword; no one is safe from them.

13 My people, you planted wheat, but because I was furious, I let only weeds grow. You wore yourselves out and gained only shame!

The LORD Will Have Pity on Other Nations

14 The LORD said:

I gave this land to my people Israel, but enemies around it have attacked and robbed it. So I will uproot them from their own countries just as I will uproot Judah from its land. 15 But later, I will have pity on these nations and bring them back to their own lands. 16 They once taught my people to worship Baal. But if they admit I am the only true God, and if they let my people teach them how to worship me, these nations will also become my people. 17 However, if they don't listen to me, I will uproot them from their lands and completely destroy them. JEREMIAH S.O.A.P. ~ CHAPTER 12

Wednesday, 8/3/22

Here we are... another midweek already....

SCRIPTURE:

"And it will come about that after I have driven them out, I will again have compassion on them; and I will bring them back, each one to his inheritance and each one to his land." ~ Jeremiah 12:15

OBSERVATION:

He "...will again have compassion on them..." - AGAIN - despite their obvious and belligerent sinful behavior...

He "...will again have compassion on..." ME... - despite my obvious and belligerent sinful disobedience...

...and He "...will bring them [me] back, each one to his [my] inheritance..." - His saving grace through Jesus...

APPLICATION:

Give thanks for His compassion...

Be mindful of and confess my obvious - and not so blatant - to others at least (hopefully) - sinful disobedience...

PRAYER:

Compassionate loving grace-giving Heavenly Father God - forgive my belligerence, my stiff-necked, willful doing things my way... Thank You for Your Holy Spirit's presence and prodding to turn my head and heart in Your direction and His returning me to my inheritance in Your Kingdom given me by Your Son Jesus... In His Name, and for Your glorious praise and worship and honor...

For Him... for you... and for yours - gratefully and prayerfully...

Day 4 - “Great Bible Study is Bookended By Prayer:”

“One of my favorite meals is grilled marinated chicken. Last summer, I looked up the process of marination because I wanted to know what was happening to the food to make it taste so good. Here’s what I discovered.

When you marinate food, usually a protein like chicken, you cover it in an acidic liquid (like vinegar or lemon juice). The acidic liquid breaks down the outer layers of the meat so that the flavorful seasonings can work their way in deeper.

Marination takes time. You can’t just drop a chicken breast in a marinade for a few minutes and expect it to hold the flavor. You have to give the process time to work.

Prayer is Christian marination. Praying with and in the Bible allows us to sit in God’s truth for an extended period in such a way that allows it to break through our outer barriers and “flavor” us beyond what we were capable of becoming on our own.

With this in mind, let me share with you the prayer I say every time I pick up my Bible:

Lord, please open me up to your Word, and open up your Word to me.

This sets the stage in my mind and heart for something to happen during my daily habit. I want to be changed. I want the Holy Spirit to illuminate the Word. And I make these intentions clear by voicing this short prayer.

There are (quite literally) hundreds of ways to incorporate prayer into and around your Bible time. For now, I encourage you to try this short prayer and see what changes take place.

Pro-Tip: Do you find yourself frustrated in prayer because you don’t feel like God hears or answers you? Let me give you the advice my pastor gave me: lower your threshold. Most people think that hearing from God is a miraculous, life-altering event. In reality, God and the Holy Spirit are speaking to you every day (and even multiple times per day!). Lowering your threshold means (1) expecting God will speak to you and (2) actively looking for small ways in which He does. You don’t need a burning bush experience to encounter God; sometimes the right song on the radio can accomplish the same thing.”

I've been picking at more of the B.ig Finish audio dramas while driving or walking/running, without actually paying attention to continuity or whatever have you - just avoiding the ones that revolve around characters I haven't met yet (sorry, Quentin) and finished Beyond the Grave and Red All Over this week. My terribly unscientific review is: Beyond the Grave was fantastically designed and executed as a horror story, and had me sleep with the light on, but alas; Red All Over wins out because of the soap opera back-from-the-dead plot, even or especially because of the other batshittery.

“10 Prayers God Always Answers” By Carrie Lowrance:

“Prayer can be such a beautiful, simple, and complicated thing at the same time. Everyone prays in their own different way and still, our loving God hears every one. Getting an answer? That can be a whole different story. Sometimes an answer comes right away and sometimes we have to wait. However, there are some things we can pray for that God will always answer. Why does He always answer? Because of the desire we have to grow in Him and see more of Him in our lives.

Here are 10 prayers God always answers, without fail:

1. “Use me to glorify You.” One of the Lord’s greatest desires is to use us to glorify Him. Sometimes it can be hard to know what to do or where He is directing us. Simply ask Him and He will answer. It could be something as big as starting a non-profit for a specific cause or something small, but just as powerful, like buying a homeless person a meal. It could also be using the unique talents He has given you to reach other people for Him.

2. “Forgive my sins.” We serve a loving and merciful God and every one of us are sinners. There is no such thing as a perfect Christian. We all stumble and sometimes backslide, but by opening our hearts and confessing our sins we can be redeemed. The Lord died to save us from our sins. Not just that day on the cross, but every day of our lives.

3. “Reveal Yourself to me.” In the busyness of life, it can be hard to see and hear where the Lord is leading us. If we simply stop and ask Him to reveal Himself to us, He will, and it’s usually in awesome, amazing ways. He reveals Himself in different ways to each one of us. To some of us, He is an inner voice, to others He speaks through visions and dreams. He also speaks at times by revealing the job, opportunity,or resources we need exactly when we need them.

If you’re really struggling, take some time during the day to just get quiet and ask Him to reveal Himself in your life. Then get into the habit of noticing the smallest of things during your day. He doesn’t always reveal Himself in big ways. Sometimes He reveals Himself in small ways as well.

4. “Give me Your wisdom.” As the Bible tells us, we are not to lean on our own understanding. This can be especially hard in difficult times. When you are facing a situation where you don’t know what you should do, ask Him to give you His wisdom. It may help to speak with your pastor or a trusted friend as well. Sometimes when we are all stressed out and “in our own minds” He will speak through a trusted clergy member/friend as to what you should do. Other times He will speak to you directly.

5. “Strengthen my obedience.” We all know that when the Lord asks us to do something, we need to be obedient. However, at times it can be very, very hard. For example, if we are waiting for something to happen, it can be hard not to take matters into our own hands. When you have days of anxiety and doubt, ask the Lord to strengthen your obedience. Ask Him to help you to do what you have been commanded to do. For me, whenever I hear or see the phrase, “Be still and know that I am God.” it reminds me to be still and obedient. For He is working even if I can’t see it.

“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” —James 1:5 (NLT)

6. “Help me spread Your love.” Our world is a crazy place, full of opinions and thoughts and ideas. We know the best way to interact with people is to show the love of the Lord, but sometimes it’s hard to know how to do this. When you ask Him to help you spread his love, He will. You may find a Christian non-profit or charity to volunteer at or you may do something on your own, like help a single Mom pay for her groceries or drive an elderly neighbor to a doctor’s appointment.

7. “Give me clarity.” Walking this path called life can be difficult and muddled at times. The last thing the Lord wants is for you to go down the wrong path or make the wrong choice. It may take time and patience, but the Lord will always answer a prayer for clarity.

“For God, who said, 'Light shall shine out of darkness,' is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.” —2 Corinthians 4:6

8. “Help me find peace.” Our own lives can be chaotic let alone all the things that are going on in the world. With everything going on, finding peace can seem almost impossible. The Lord does not want us living in a state of anxiety and peril, He will always answer and help us find peace.

“In those days you will pray and I will listen. If you seek Me wholeheartedly you will find Me.” —Jeremiah 29:12-13 (NLT)

9. “Align my heart with Yours.” This world can be a mean spirited place and it can be hard sometimes not to hold judgment, resentment, or other feelings in our hearts. By asking the Lord to align our hearts with His and asking for forgiveness, He can cleanse us of the toxic things that build up in our hearts and be more aligned with Him. He loves us and wants us to be more like Him so this is a prayer He will always answer.

10. “Align my mind with Yours.” Our minds are bombarded by images, thoughts, opinions, and information every day. As we all know, what goes in is what comes out. Still, we can’t just totally shut ourselves off from society and the media. We all falter in our thoughts from time to time. In this situation, it is best to ask the Lord to align our mind with His.

Let's pray: Dear Lord, I want to grow in You and have more of You in my life. I pray that You will strengthen me in using me and my talents to glorify You. I thank You for loving me and forgiving my sins each day, every day. I pray You will reveal Yourself in my life. Give me Your wisdom as to what I should do in every situation and strengthen my obedience in what You ask of me. Show me the right path to travel and correct my ways if I stray. Show me ways to show and spread Your love to those around me. Clear my mind to receive crystal clear clarity when You speak. Help align my heart and mind in their purest form to be an imitation of You. Thank You for answering all my prayers in your perfect timing with Your perfect answer, even though I may not always understand. In Your name, I pray. Amen.”
