Circoolar transforms plastic into work clothes
Tumblr media
The startup will produce Sanitas uniforms in Spain
The health and sustainability of the planet is a global concern and more and more companies are adopting measures and contributing their grain of sand to prevent the deterioration of the environment. This is the case of Circoolar[1], a startup that, with just two years of existence, is opening a niche in the textile business, but from an "ethical, ecological and circular" approach, specifies Luis Ribó, its co-founder. The entrepreneur is aware that this industry is one of the two most polluting in the world and is responsible for 10% of greenhouse gas emissions, according to data from the United Nations.
“It is a fact that our lifestyle and the clothes we wear have a damaging effect on the planet,” he warns. More data: the production of fabrics to make our dresses is responsible for 20% of the water pollution in the world. Just to make cotton jeans, 10,000 litres of water are used and almost 3,000 in a T-shirt. The washing of essential synthetic materials to make clothes originates half a million tons of microfibers that are swallowed by the oceans, according to the UN.
Throwaway fashion (fast fashion) is partly responsible for this disaster, which has given way to a new trend: sustainable garments. Far from being a passing habit, it seems to be consolidating and is visible both in street style, on the streets, and in work clothes.
Circoolar focuses its activity on the design and marketing of corporate textiles. “It is an essential need and we act from that ethical, ecological and circular approach”, emphasizes Ribó, in four lines of business: “Work and industrial clothing, textile merchandising, recycled felt and masks”. The latter forced by the circumstances of the Covid since the company was born just four months before the pandemic, in November 2019, "with a focus on uniforms for hotels and restaurants."
In its short history, the startup run by Ribó and his partner Celina Tamagnini, who is responsible for product and business development, has received numerous recognitions and awards, the latest being the EcoDisruptive from the insurance company Sanitas[2] and the insurer's parent company, Bupa[3], that provided an injection of 200,000 pounds (240,000 euros).
This aid and "an agreement that we have just closed to manufacture the uniforms of a company in the food sector allows us to face the year with great optimism in terms of turnover," says the company spokesperson. Circoolar's turnover was 156,000 euros in 2020 and around 105,000 in 2021 (pending the closing of the annual accounts).
In the opinion of Lina Guerrero, director of talent, development and selection of Sanitas and Bupa Europe and Latin America, “two elements have been fundamental in Circoolar's proposal: on the one hand, the applicability and relevance of the project. We think it is actionable and can have a wide impact. And on the other hand, the social approach that it introduces in its production process”.
Circoolar “works with social insertion and female empowerment workshops. That is another of our hallmarks”, explains Ribó. The startup only uses ecofriendly materials such as polyester, recycled PET bottles (plastic) and organic and recycled cotton.
The garments are designed so that, once their useful life cycle is over, they can be recycled, given a second chance and achieve zero waste. In the making of a uniform –jacket and pants– 18 half-litre plastic bottles are used.
The amount of the prize will allow Circoolar “to produce ethical and sustainable uniforms for care professionals in all the countries where Bupa operates. In Spain alone, Sanitas employs 50,000 uniform garments per year”, Guerrero points out. The start-up will expand its workforce to six people this year, key to its international assault with the Nordic countries, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands as the main challenge.
In figures
156,000 euros was the turnover in 2020. The goal is to widely exceed that figure in 2022 thanks, in part, to the support of Sanitas.
Up to now, 30,000 ecological work uniforms have been sold to clients such as Isdin[4], la Cocina de los Hermanos Torres[5] or Aguas de Barcelona[6].
Bupa, the parent company of Sanitas, will invest 240,000 euros to help Circoolar produce uniforms for its healthcare professionals. In Spain alone, Sanitas uses more than 50,000 garments of this type per year.
These are his achievements in one year
Less plastics. In its first year of operation, Circoolar has managed to avoid waste from more than 10,000 plastic bottles.
Carbon footprint. The start-up has reduced the emission of greenhouse gases by 24% in 2020.
Saving. Thanks to the use of organic cotton, energy savings were 62% and water savings 91%.
Zero waste. All this has managed to generate almost zero textile waste, avoiding the use of more than two million disposable masks (future waste).
