74. The Most Precious of Cargoes, by Jean-Claude Grumberg
Tumblr media
Owned: No, library Page count: 102 My summary: Once upon a time, there lived a poor woodcutter and his wife in a cottage in the forest. War rages outside of their little home, but hunger and cold are their more constant companions. The woodcutter’s wife prays for a child, and one day her prayers are answered. A train rumbles through the forest, and from a window falls a child wrapped in a shawl. On the train, a Jewish father protects one of his children the only way he knows how. It’s an act of desperation - he may never see her again, but she might live. Their train is speeding to a place of death. He knows few will survive. But he has to hope. My rating: 4/5 My commentary:
This was a completely random pull. I saw it on the shelf and thought it looked interesting, picked it up, and read it in one session because it's not particularly long. It's a strange little book, and I don't mean that as an insult. Half fable, half horrible history. Horrible, of course, because it's about the Holocaust, and the desperation of those who struggled to survive it. Its terrors are spoken of matter-of-factly, with some lyrical and poetical language - I have to commend the translator their skilful adaptation. It's a fairytale indeed, but not one to tell your children, perhaps. Not until they're old enough to understand.
One of the things I found interesting about this story was the pervading sense of sadness that permeated it. Sadness and, indeed, anger. Grumberg tells us in an afterword that, while the characters in this book are fictional, the cargo trains it details were real, and both his father and grandfather were on them. From what I could find about his life (most detailed sources were in French) his father and probably grandfather did not survive. Grumberg, born in 1939, was saved by the Children's House of Moissac, a house that saved nearly 500 Jewish children from the Nazis. This history weighs heavy on a tale of a child saved and sheltered from the Holocaust, growing up without a birth family and knowing nothing of her culture. This is a story of tragedy and loss, but also a tale of family. The girl loses her birth family (only her father survives the war, and declines to be part of her life even after finding her again as he is so broken by all he has seen) but gains an adoptive family, and the adults around her fight for her life, two even sacrificing themselves for her. The child is loved, and cherished, and sheltered. She is also cut off from her heritage. It's a bittersweet sting in the tale, softened by the clear love and adoration her mother shows to her.
But Grumberg too is angry at the tides of bigotry and oppression that slaughtered so many people around him. He shows it through the characters who seek to capture the girl, who want to deliver her to the same fate as her mother and twin brother, in the asides showing the father (who now shears hair in a concentration camp) and everything he has been through. The poetic language does not hide the brutal reality of what happened to all of these people. His afterword where he contextualises the story in his reality is brimming with pain. It's a moving, evocative version of an apocalyptic event in human history, and it makes for some rough, but necessary, reading.
Next up, to Victorian England, and a story of intrigue across the boundaries of class.

Gérard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve in The Last Métro (François Truffaut, 1980)
Cast: Catherine Deneuve, Gérard Depardieu, Jean Poiret, Andréa Ferréol, Paulette Dubost, Jean-Louis Richard, Maurice Risch, Sabine Haudepin, Heinz Bennent. Screenplay: François Truffaut, Suzanne Schiffman, Jean-Claude Grumberg. Cinematography: Néstor Almendros. Production design: Jean-Pierre Kohut-Svelko. Film editing: Martine Barraqué. Music: Georges Delerue. François Truffaut said in interviews that The Last Métro is a kind of companion film to Day for Night (1973), his behind-the-camera account of making a movie. Truffaut, who was born in 1932, was only a boy during the war but he recalls the theater -- both the movie theater and the legitimate stage -- as a kind of refuge from hardship, the hunger and cold brought about by wartime rationing. People gathered in theaters for communal warmth. The story is principally about an actress, Marion Steiner (Catherine Deneuve), who is trying to keep the theater that was run before the war by her husband, Lucas (Heinz Bennent), open. Lucas, who is Jewish, is rumored to have fled to America, but in fact he is hiding in the cellar of the theater while Marion, with the help of the rest of the regular company, stages a play. The director, Jean-Loup Cottins (Jean Poiret), is working from the notes Lucas made on the play before his disappearance. Cottins has his own dangerous secret: He's gay, and hence subject to persecution by the occupying Nazis. A new leading man, Bernard Granger (Gérard Depardieu), joins the company, and inevitably a tension develops between him and Marion. Meanwhile, Lucas has figured out ways to listen in on rehearsals and make suggestions to Marion that she passes along to Cottins, who is unaware of Lucas's hiding place. Marion also has the difficulty of dealing with the authorities, who could close the theater at any moment, especially when the influential critic Daxiat (Jean-Louis Richard), a collaborator with the Nazis, takes an interest in her and the play. What takes place on stage, namely the sexual tension between the characters played by Marion and Bernard, often mirrors what's happening backstage. The Last Métro is a well-crafted movie -- Truffaut wrote the screenplay with Suzanne Schiffman -- that was France's entry for the best foreign-film Oscar and won a raft of the French César Awards, including one for cinematographer Nestor Almendros.

Jean-Claude Grumberg
