Squirrel Away!
IVY TILLER: VICAR’S DAUGHTER, SQUIRREL KILLER The Other Place, Stratford upon Avon, Thursday 27th October, 2022 Long ago, white Europeans went to the Americas and wiped out the natives with diseases.  Centuries later, the grey squirrels returned the favour by coming to the UK and doing the same to our native reds.  There is a movement now to ‘control’ the grey population, a kind of ethnic…

for whatever reason i hadnt gotten into jagged little pill but i saw it last night on tour and jesus christ it was good.. i mean i knew heidi blickenstaff is amazing but she really killed it and god they werent lying jade mcleod singing you oughta know almost made me wanna stand up and scream halfway through act 2!!
i went in mostly blind and that might not have been the best idea considering a lot of it hit closer to home than i was expecting (addiction and rape particularly) but i feel like every issue woven into the story was given a lot of thought and respect without leaning too far into psa territory. plus i saw it with my mom who grew up with the album and was lip syncing to every song so seeing it in such a new light was pretty cool, not to mention seeing it with her own gay daughter lmao.
anyway this has been my review i guess, really i just wanted to gush about how great the cast was (the understudies killed it!! a little sad i didnt see derek klena's brother tho)
jagged little pill! the musical! it's about so much more than that nonbinary discourse i heard last year!

Jagged Little Pill at the Pantages Theatre, a few weeks late:
Its tagline: “SOME SHOWS YOU SEE. THIS SHOW YOU FEEL.” Had decent hopes for this as a jukebox musical because it has an original plot and I already knew about half of the songs. But while it did have some interesting and moving scenes, I didn’t really feel that much, despite the intensity and earnestness of the subject matter.  However the cast was very good and maybe under other circumstances I would have found the show more affecting.
Favorite parts: the humor of “Ironic”, the staging of “Smiling,” and Bella’s performance in “Predator”
The sound was murky through most of the show and it was hard to catch any lyrics in group songs, but I didn’t feel like I was missing much plot.
Found MJ’s storyline the most engaging overall, Heidi Blickenstaff was good in what was not always a likable role.
Could not bring myself to care about the Frankie/Jo/Phoenix love triangle, so “You Oughta Know” had less impact than it might have otherwise.  I remember watching the song performance on that “One Night Only: The Best of Broadway” special and it seemed like it was more substantial out of context.
On the whole I thought performances were very good. Jade McLeod (Jo) has a beautiful tone to their voice which is evident in various songs, though not so much in “You Oughta Know.”
At intermission, it appeared that several rows in the back were pretty empty.
Set pieces moved out directly from the back of the stage; the movement of people and set elements seemed to be smooth, clean, and sharply executed.
Eavesdropping on people around me: the people behind me (an older couple) seemed to really enjoy the show both at intermission and at the end.

Theater Review: Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill
June 14, 2023 @ Citizens Bank Opera House (Boston, MA)
Tumblr media
Jagged Little Pill promo
The Song of the Summer of 1995 was Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know”! Hands down!  The Canadian singer-songwriter came seemingly out of nowhere, even though she already had some albums under her belt and had been a child actress (she got her start on You Can’t Do That on Television). The accompanying album Jagged Little Pill became one of the biggest albums in history. She was the biggest among the wave of female musicians in the mid-90s who weren’t afraid to fill their songwriting with raw emotion. “You Oughta Know” was a perfect example, depicting a jilted lover not holding back on how furious she was at her ex for doing her wrong. I picked up Jagged Little Pill when I first got to college and really dug much of the album, but over time it’s an album I outgrew. But periodically I’ve returned to the album and there’s no denying her talent. The broad appeal and lasting impression of the album (today it’s considered one of the greatest albums ever made) is that it was catchy enough to appeal to pop and Top 40 radio, but edgy enough for the Alternative Nation. She’s also had multiple moments in pop culture: she gave Taylor Hawkins his start as the drummer in her band for the Jagged tour, she played God in Kevin Smith’s Dogma and she also appeared on Weeds among many other performances. Skip ahead to 2018, when a musical based on the album Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill began at A.R.T in Cambridge, MA (just down the street from me) before going to Broadway in 2019. It even won some Tony Awards. Last year, it began a North American tour and this month the production hits Boston at Citizens Bank Opera House, where I caught it on Wed. night!

the 1995 Jagged Little Pill album cover
Taking place in Connecticut, the Healy family prepares their annual Christmas letter: mom Mary Jane is still recovering from a car accident and has secretly become addicted to painkillers, dad Steve is a workaholic with an online porn addiction, son Nick has just been accepted into Harvard and their adopted daughter Frankie struggles with fitting in as a black teen in a white household and being bisexual. Nick witnesses an incident at a party that brings back some traumatic memories for Mary Jane. The music of Jagged Little Pill plays a pivotal role in the story as does Morissette’s post-JLP music as well. Worth noting is that the song sequence has changed and also the meaning as well, i.e. on the album opener “All I Really Want” (the best song on the album IMHO) was originally sung as one voice, here it is a voice singing one verse and then next verse is a different character’s perspective.
What truly made this more than just a jukebox musical was the book written by Diablo Cody, who is using the music to address one of her favorite themes, suburban malaise. So much of her films like Juno, Young Adult and the criminally underrated Tully address the idea of seemingly perfect suburban characters who seem to have the perfect family, house, and life, but it’s not as perfect as it seems. This play addresses a ton of topical themes like opioid addiction, #metoo movement, LGBTQ+ rights, etc. I think the strongest performances were from Mary Jane (Heidi Blickenstaff) and Frankie’s lesbian friend Jo (Jade McLeod). At times some of the characters bordered on archetypes (and almost tinkering on clichés), but stay with it, as the cast and the music lift it up. I liked the contrast between the parents and the kids both searching for meaning in their lives. It’s easy to compare this to American Beauty, but there is that same sense of confused kids and even more confused grown ups trying to figure things out.

Not all 90s music can lend itself to musical theater, but this album truly does. Now if only we could get a musical of Liz Phair’s Exile in Guyville!

Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
Berry juice staining your fingers. Scratching at a bug bite. Clothes that smell of a bonfire. Saltwater sticking in your hair. Scurrying up to the lighthouse with your friends and a bottle of wine. Watching the sunset on the dock.
Welcome back to Camp Laurel.
WHERE? Camp Laurel, a fictional summer camp in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Oh and this is a dash event
WHEN? Wednesday July 1st at 5 PM EST to Tuesday, July 7th at 2 PM EST
DETAILS BELOW
Last year, when Yates Junior Darren McLeod decided to rent out an entire summer camp on the coast of Maine, everyone was excited for a unique experience. They had assumed it was a one time thing, the boy whose family could buy the entirety of New England buying out the grounds for students to run wild for a summer week. And they did make it an unforgettable week. It was less Walden Pond and more Wet Hot American Summer.
The Yates students singlehandedly cleared out the only liquor store by Camp Laurel. Clothes laid strewn along the sandy beaches all week as students skinny dipped, much to the chagrin of the camp’s neighbors. Rumor says twenty students participated in an orgy in Cabin Hydra, and everyone claims they were part of it.
It seemed like the kind of week you couldn’t recreate, a perfect encapsulation of all the societies that was bound to live on like a legend. But then Darren popped molly with his friends by the campfire, and after a bottle of champagne he quickly called the owners. The next day he woke up with no memory of permanently purchasing the camp in his family’s name and forty missed calls from his parents after realizing a couple hundred thousand had been drained from their bank account.
While the camp still operates as a retreat for youth most of the summer, for one week in July the place is cleared out, and Darren’s determined to make the events of last summer happen again. So pack your bathing suits, your bug spray and lots of ibuprofen for your inevitable hangover. It’s time to go to camp again.
This year, the students of Yates have been divided up into two teams. Team Nebula and Team Supernova. You will be sharing cabins with your teammates, as well as participating in Camp Wars together. IC, the winners will be determined by a series of games, including beach volleyball, three legged race, canoe race, and a sandcastle contest among others. However, we the admins will determine the winners by how many tasks are created from the list below. The team with the most points at the end of the week will be crowned the winners. Winning has little reward except for bragging rights among your fellow society members and a secret reward that I will not reveal yet. Each of the following activities is worth A POINT EACH. We’ve created a tag, #YATESPOINTS, for you to post these. Good luck!
