JLPT N2 - Word/Grammar Point of the Day #13 (and a tangent on school systems)
Word of the Day #13 - 幼稚園
幼稚園 (youchien) means "kindergarten" or "preschool". It's super simple, so to make it fun, let's quickly look at the slight difference between the school system in Japan and that of the United States.
In the US, kindergarten and preschool are two different concepts. Generally, the stages of schooling are as follows:
Preschool (optional) - for toddlers and children before they start school
Kindergarten - 1 year; children enter when they are 5 years old
Elementary School - 5 years
Middle School - 3 years
High School - 4 years
This school progression is typically referred to as K-12, with K representing kindergarten and the grades count upward until 12th grade in the final year of high school.
In Japan, the school progression very similar, but just different enough that it should be noted:
幼稚園 (optional) - for toddlers and children before they start school
小学校 - 6 years; children enter when they are 6 years old
中学校 - 3 years
高校 - 3 years
This structure is also the reason 幼稚園 translates to both kindergarten and preschool. The United States uses the word kindergarten to refer to the year of school before 1st grade. This is similar to Reception in the UK or Prep in Australia. Japan does not have this concept and so has a single word to represent the optional years of education prior to the first year of mandatory schooling.
Grammar Point of the Day #13 - 「 に関わらず 」
「 に関わらず 」 (ni kakawarazu) means "in spite of" or "regardless of". It's typically used in the structure "A + に関わらず + B" to communicate that some factor, A, is not an important consideration when thinking or talking about B.
I'll skip any additional commentary on this grammar point today since I went off on a long tangent about the Japanese school system. 😅
例文:
年齢に関わらず、誰でもそれに応募できる。 Anyone can apply, regardless of age.

Video Games for Japanese Learners Part 3 (English and Japanese Bilingual)
Mega Man Legends (ロックマンDASH 鋼の冒険心) and Mega Man Legends 2 (ロックマンDASH2 エピソード2 大いなる遺産) for the PlayStation 1 and PSP
Recommended level of Japanese: intermediate (JLPT N4, N3)
おすすめの日本語能力レベル:中級 (JLPT N4、N3)
When most people think of Mega Man, they think of the side scrolling action Mega Man games. The Mega Man Legends games are 3D action-adventure games similar to the later Legend of Zelda titles. They are a lot of fun and are super charming. The first game in the series has a lot of kanji but shouldn’t be too difficult for intermediate learners. On the other hand, Mega Man Legends 2 has kanji with furigana written above. The PSP versions are both direct PlayStation ports.
これらのソフトは、横スクロールアクションのロックマンのソフトではありません。ロックマンDASHのソフトは、3Dのゼルダのソフトのように3Dアクションアドベンチャーです。とても面白くて、魅力的なゲームシリーズだと思います。ロックマンDASHには小学生レベルの漢字とひらがなが書かれているので日本語能力が中級レベルなら問題ないと思います。一方、ロックマンDASH2には、漢字にふりがなが書かれています。 PSP版は両方とも移植されたPlayStationソフトです。

Blue Dragon (ブルードラゴン) for the Xbox 360
Recommended level of Japanese: intermediate (JLPT N4、N3)
おすすめの日本語能力レベル:中級 (JLPT N4, N3)
This game is very similar to the Dragonquest and the older Final Fantasy games. The game was written by the legendary Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. It reminds of a JRPG that I would play on the Super Famicom/SNES, but in 3D. It has kanji with furigana written above. It got mixed reviews but I personally like Blue Dragon. This game is available to purchase on the Microsoft store on the Xbox One and Series consoles.
このソフトは、ドラゴンクエストや昔のファイナルファンタジーのソフトとよく似ています。ファイナルファンタジーの監督の坂口博信さんによって作られたソフトです。スーパーファミコンのJRPGを思い出させます。漢字にふりがなが書かれています。レビューはまちまちですが、個人的にはブルードラゴンが好きです。このソフトはXbox OneとXbox Series S/XのMicrosoftストアで購入することが可能です。

i passed the jlpt n2! ✨
i averaged around 70% on the whole test. which is disappointing considering i got full marks on the N3. but! i passed on the first try even though i spent the year struggling with ocd, moving to japan, a breakup, and working full time. the amount of days i chose to not study bc of mental health or to spend time with loved ones before moving had me very nervous.
i can feel a little bit better about job hunting in japan now 🥲
very difficult to be proud of myself lately so im gonna try to let myself have this one.

JLPT N2 - Word/Grammar Point of the Day #7
Word of the Day #7 - 巨額
巨額 (kyogaku) means "huge sum (of money)" or "massive amount". It is only used to refer to money.
From what I can tell, while it is technically a noun, it almost exclusively appears in the form 「巨額の + Money word」, where the money word could be anything from 収入 (income) to 税金 (tax) or just simply 金 (money).
例文:
ABC会社は巨額の利益を受け続けている。 Company ABC continues to enjoy huge profits.
Grammar Point of the Day #7 - 「 V (stem) + 次第 」
「 V (stem) + 次第 」 means "immediately after" or "as soon as". The verb that you're converting to stem form is the condition, and what comes after the 次第 is the consequence.
例文:
駅に着き次第電話をする。 I will call as soon as I arrive at the station.
It should be noted that great caution should be taken if 次第 is encountered on the JLPT. If you add a に or a で/だ to 次第, the meaning completely changes.
次第で or 次第だ means "depending on", as in:
それは条件次第です。 That depends on the conditions.
次第に means "gradually", as in:
風は次第におさまった。 The wind gradually died down.
