今日は練習:
Today, I decided to try and translate a game I've really wanted to play, but it never got an official (or even a finished unofficial) translation!
Definitely a more ambitious way to practice when I'm still learning vocabulary, grammar, and Kanji, but I find having something like this more fun and motivating to practice! Plus the dialogue will be a little less formal like my textbooks for a different kind of learning.
A friend of mine who is more fluent agreed to look over my translations and give me any corrections/suggestions that would fit better! I've only gotten through translating the different menu options, but I'm still rather proud of my work today! I'll share the first page/menu since those are the translations I'm most confident in, but I'll double back to this post if my friend finds any inaccuracies.

Day 8
Spent 4 and a halfish hours creating an anki deck for @jpn-langblr ‘s あつ森 (Animal crossing) posts. It’s gonna help me play so much better in Japanese. So thank you so much for those posts!!
I’m also trying to figure out a way to mass send them to jpdb.io. I’m loving that website. If I can learn more, the more I can use that site to get media recommendations I’ll be able to understand well. I’m so excited.
I also decorated my anki and did more tweaking to my desktop today. Starting to look nicer all the time.

I was also watching Japanese AC videos yesterday. This girl is so sweet and makes such pretty islands. You should check her out! Her name is せなくまチャンネル

I watched Nimona today. Loved it! The movie's art is different from the graphic novel but I still like it. Nimona is a shapeshifter, so people think she is a monster. But Nimona is just Nimona. Her story is very similar to the stories of many transgender and nonbinary people, so that makes it special. I think you should watch it if you haven't.
今日「ニモナ」を見た。大すきですよ!!映画はgraphic novelの描くの方が違うけど、あたしは好き。ニモナちゃんはいろいろ動物と人間をになることができるの少女。 そこで、人口はニモナちゃんはバケモノが思う。けど、ニモナちゃんはニモナ。ニモナの身の上話はトランス・ジェンダーとジェンダーレスの人口の身の上話がにる。好きだよ!!見ればいいと思う。
Watching: Nimona on Netflix
Listening: Once Upon A Dream by Wonderlands x Showtime
Drawing: Nimona!!

"Goukon Ni Ittara Onna Ga Inakatta Hanashi" seems like a great jdrama to practice japanese for people inbetween n4 and n3, i personally suck but with the help of jisho, google translate and context clues i get nearly all of what is being said on the first episode, i recommend trying it out to test yourself and practice if not for the plot itself which is very light and fun as well

(10:19 PM)
Currently, I’m watching Minase Rio from Uproar play Omori. It’s not a live broadcast, but I’m having a lot of fun regardless. And I’ve been catching what he’s saying here and there, which is exciting!
I’m going to keep practicing Japanese so that I can become fluent and help connect people together. Let’s see where I last left off in my notes…
____________________________________________________________
(10:26 PM)
Well I remember the words for my notes, for the most part. But I’ll definitely need to be brushing up on them again tomorrow morning. For now, I’ll just mark down some of the things I manage to roughly understand during the stream.
____________________________________________________________
Game: “Are you naming the boy Rio?”
Minase: “Yes. I’m Rio, so…”
Game: (Sonny appears)
Minase: “Isn’t this Omori-Kun?” *
Minase: Scary…
Minase: I was frightened/surprised *
Minase: Is it here?
Minase: Mama, where is the kitchen??
Minase: Sleep? Do I sleep?
Game: (Sonny wakes up)
Minase: I woke up *
Minase: I want to run away *
Minase: (in regards to Sonny) I don’t want to look outside (そとみたくない)
____________________________________________________________
* While writing the translation for this, I realized I didn’t fully understand [じゃ ね]
So I googled it, and after a couple moments or so of getting the wrong translation using romaji alone- I kept getting redirected to [じゃあね], I finally figured it out using a translator and a Japanese keyboard. Now I know the difference! :D
* The word he said, [びくりした] I’ve heard this used a lot before. Looking at the way it’s formed, it makes sense for this to be a past tense word. It was just used informally, so I didn’t recognize it right away! Interesting!
So like if you said [べんきょうしました] “I studied” informally- it would be  [べんきょうした] instead. So present tense for being surprised would be [びくるいする] “frighten”
I have to wonder if the translation would be more accurate to surprise or frighten though, since both seem to be used in what I’ve seen. Maybe “shocked” is what it could better be compared to?
* Here, he merely used the phrase [おきた] which, despite Google translate trying to trick me, I’m pretty sure acts as the informal past tense version of [おきる] -the base verb that means “wake/get up”
* I heard [にげたい] and figured on past experience that it translated to “want to run” from the base verb [にげる] but I didn’t understand the part at the end. The full phrase said was [にげたいなこれ] and translating it on Google didn’t help much since it just gave me the same translation I came up with in the first place. I don’t understand the particle [な] but I do know that [これ] pretty much translates to “this”
Perhaps what Rio actually had said was: “I want to run away from this”
___________________________________________________________
(11:23)
A lot of my time during this was actually spent figuring out and translating new things to help complete my knowledge of what I already knew. This is a really fun way of learning!
Okay, last note- I’m pretty sure Rio got confused when Sonny was able to use the microwave because he said “He ya no denki”- “He ya” being room, and “denki” meaning electricity. I figured as such even before googling it because of Kaminari Denki from BNHA. And I was CORRECT!
I think he was asking something like “This room has electricity??”- considering the fact that the power was supposed to be out in the story.

Today's Japanese Practice:

Well, couldn’t study yesterday. Sunday was unusually busy.
Day 3
Japanese story reading today. ‘Japanese Folktales For Language Learners’ 昔ばなしで学ぶ日本語 by Eriko Sato and Anna Sato arrived in the mail today. I was so excited to start it.
I read the story of ‘The Mouses Marriage’. The discussion points at the end of the story made me wonder. “Question 2: What are the life lessons in this story?’. Coming from an incredibly multicultural country (🇦🇺), the story, to me, comes across as to say “stay with your own kind”. I don’t know if that’s the only moral of the story, but I can’t think of anything else. And the moral seems like a negative thing to me. The parents went to many great candidates for their daughter, but chose to settle for their own kind. Does this folktale follow the old Japanese mindset of ‘marry the same race’? Either way. I still very much enjoyed the story and glad the daughter mouse had a happy married life.
I’m also pretty stoked, I’m not good at answering blanket questions in Japanese yet, I struggle with them a lot. But today I managed to get them all correct 🥰

This weekend I couldn’t study much. Saturday I took as a rest day, but Sunday things kept getting in the way. Shopping, phone calls, chores etc. so I’m wondering if I should 1. Add a couple of extra days onto my study? Or just study extra on the days I plan on studying anyway? I’m not sure.
