I have a spoilery asset to share with you today.
Tumblr media
It's the control desk. Raven Beak stands here during the first cutscene in Hanubia. He also watches Morbius here.
Tumblr media
This state-of-the-art piece of Chozo military technology is packed full of features.
Tumblr media
The most notable of these gadgets are the rounded blue structures on the surface of the desk, which project the holograms we see in the takumaku Metroid powers cutscene and in the background aboard Itorash.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It doesn't have a back because we're not supposed to see it from that angle.
Tumblr media
There's a button at the end of the desk on the right hand side.
Tumblr media
The black box on the left looks to be either a drawer, a lockbox, or a control panel of some sort. It looks like you could open it. Maybe I'm just seeing hinges and handles where there are none: this is a background element, so the textures are a bit crunchy. They're designed to look good from afar.
Tumblr media
Here are some tubes. It looks like there's an indentation on the left for you to put your fingers in and lift up to change out the tubes. The triangle pointing upwards on the left side seems to support the idea that it can be lifted up. Maybe these tubes (and the panel covering the yellow wires behind it) are part of the system that allows the hologram projector screens to operate?
Tumblr media
Finally, we come to the most important element: a drawer for his tic-tacs.
Tumblr media
And here's some concept art.

In an Alternate Timeline
Raven Beak wakes up not surrounded by the wreckage of Itorash nor on ZDR...But aboard a ship.
Samus:Anyway the whole thing was a disaster...Your E.M.M.I's did not make it. ???: Do you not understand the gravity of this situation? HUH? Those Extraplanetary Multiform Mobile Identifiers were not cheap to make! Samus: AH Bill me the difference I got other stuff on my plate! ???: Why yo- Samus: That's enough of that. Raven Beak: Pardon me but, what are you doing? Samus: Heading home. Raven Beak: Besides that daughter dearest. what are you doing taking me alive? I'm pretty sure I should be dead right now. Waaaaaaaait... Samus: ...Ah boy here we go. Raven Beak: Are you trying to redeem me? Oh that is just RICH after all I've done? C'mon Honey let's not fool ourselves now. Samus: Yep Raven Beak: Okay so what? You take me back to...what a planetoid you commandeered and expect me, Raven Beak,The APEX of the Mawkin, to just Behave myself? Samus: Mmmmhmmm... Raven Beak:...You know your track record against me is pretty abyssal. I won both! Samus: And lost your suit and Aeion abilities Raven Beak: And that...Makes me a non threat? I could STILL walk over there and snap your neck. Samus: At that moment ADAM will just fly himself into the nearest Asteroid. Raven Beak: Huh...Thoha DNA at it's finest... Samus: Besides...I'm tired of Destroying everything Chozo...And besides the Elysia Tribe...You're practically the Only Chozo left. Raven Beak: ... Samus:So yeah maybe I do want to redeem you. Maybe I don't want the last Chozo be known as a short sighted Tyrant! So once I get you home I'm locking you up and...figure out everything from there... Raven Beak:...Fine. Samus:No witty comeback? Raven Beak: Nope...I'm gonna let you have this. but once we make planet fall I'm gonna be a right witty bastard! Samus:wouldn't have it any other way

Anyway I'm so excited to be so close to the end of Dread
Just a couple more Shinespark puzzles left, and then I can hop on up to the Itorash and beat my head against this boss fight
Excited and also full of dread
Heh.

Also, fun epiphany I had- Metroid Dread doesn’t allow you to access Samus’ ship until after Raven Beak is defeated. From a plot and gameplay perspective, having access to your ship but not leaving ZDR could easily be explained; Like in Samus Returns, Samus won’t use her ship to leave until she accomplishes her mission of defeating Raven Beak.
But then I realized- The real reason you’re not allowed to access your ship early (even if the game wouldn’t let you fly because Samus wants to defeat Raven Beak first) is because if you did so, then you’d encounter the real Adam... And this would of course spoil that twist at the end, where it’s revealed it was Raven Beak imitating him since your first encounter in Artaria.
This is also why ‘Adam’ insists that you head to the surface for most of the game, instead of continue to investigate the X presence, or recovering your full arsenal and then engaging Raven Beak- It’s because Raven Beak wants to fight you in Itorash at the end of Samus’ journey, once she’s unlocked her Metroid powers!
(Still confused as to why ZDR explodes... Did Raven Beak just rig it that way in the event of his death, like Mother Brain- As a precaution against the X leaving the planet? How was Samus planning to destroy ZDR, given ‘Adam’ acts like that’s her plan- Ask the Galactic Federation to build a sufficient bomb for her?)

More seriously tho, the Scene where Metroid Samus drained both Raven Beak & Itorash was jaw dropping :O . (It reminded me of that scene in Devil May Cry 5 before Nero beat his deadbeat dad.)
Also the fact that Chozo language can deciphered is really cool.
Raven Beak: *tries to awaken Samus' Metroid genes*
Samus' Metroid genes: *are awakened*
Raven Beak, being sucked dry like a juicebox: *surprised Pikachu face*
I wonder how long it took for the devs to come up with a believable conlang :o

Kept thinking about this while i was doing laundry. I'll write this and then go back to thinking about asks.
ZDR technically has its own form of social media in forums. They're completely insulated from the rest of the galaxy, and the Mawkin use them to communicate with their comrades across the planet. There's a centralized platform where individuals can subscribe to certain topics to keep up with them, and there are community forums.
Say you're an engineer, and you opt to keep tabs on a new project in Cataris. You'll be notified when the people participating in the project record the day's work in the log or post about it.
Say you're a disabled senior living in a village within the depths of the planet. You can post on your community forum: "Good evening, I am feeling sick today and cannot make it to the hearth. I would appreciate if someone could come over and make some soup", and your neighbor (+ three other people) would undoubtedly respond.
The military passes announcements on through the chain of command and during meetings. If you're a soldier, relevant news will be passed to you by your commanding officer. News from higher administration that affects *everyone* is passed through these channels and posted on the community board.
This begs the question: does Raven Beak use these social channels? The answer is "yes, but sparingly". He hardly posts anything at all, and really only checks it to see what people are up to. He unfortunately does not post thirst traps for people to salivate over and make horny comments on.
He does, however, occasionally "like" his subordinates' posts. And you can bet your best dollar that people post screenshots of their "Raven Beak liked your post" notifications online for clout.
There has been at least one instance where Raven Beak has borne witness to a soldier thirstposting about him, liked it, and turned off his notifications, knowing full well the forums would explode.
Gotta shake things up sometimes, you know? Cause a bit of chaos and come back later to read through all the beakblr girlies keysmashing and screaming and cry-laugh-typing over the fact that Raven Beak himself saw this guy's post about wanting the Commander to crush his skull with his big, meaty thighs.

On board Itorash
"ADAM": Submit and offer up your power. My plan is the only way to bring order to the galaxy. Fulfill your destiny, Samus. This is an order. Disobedience will not be tolerated. Samus: Well that confimrms it -blasts "ADAM"- Raven Beak: Well that's not nice. those hologram projectors are NOT cheap "Sweetie". Samus: Uhg I preferred when you were impersonating ADAM Raven Beak: Eh...I'm bored stroking my ego anyway...SO! About Offering up your power. It's been incubating long enough. Samus: yeah...Explain "Daddy Dearest". Raven Beak: Ew...I see what you're taking about. Anyway, remember your little "Vaccination" awhile back? Samus: Ho- Raven Beak: Oh you won't BELIEVE how weak the GFS security is! It was so easy I could do it! And coding is NOT my strongest suit Samus: Whe- Raven Beak: After I knocked you out when you went absolutely feral! It was...Familiar...Like a certain Bio Engineered warrior Familiar. so that's when I decided to look into it...And Lo and Behold. The Ultimate Warrior, The Most Powerful Metroid, Stands before me. Samus: So...you just Expect me to just work for you? Raven Beak: More or less. Samus: -point cannon at him- Raven Beak: -sigh- Honey...We both know how this gonna end... Samus: With YOU dead and ZDR Blowing up. Raven Beak: And here I thought I had an Ego.

Metroid Dread Model Deep Dive: Raven Beak, Part 1
You know him, you've (probably) fought him, he's a staple of this blog...
Tumblr media
It's Raven Beak! We're finally doing this.
Today, I'm providing a comprehensive look into Raven Beak's model. I probably won't have enough space to cover the entire thing, as the image limit for Tumblr posts is capped at 30, but we're starting with the head and working our way down.
The rest of this post is under the cut for your convenience.
Navigation:
Fullbody turnaround and helmet meshes
Helmet details
Shoulders, arms, and hands
Arm cannon
Wings and torso
Legs and feet
BONUS: Naked head
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Raven Beak is referred to as chozocommander in the files: his textures are abbreviated to "commander[whatever]" in the files, with the name of a mesh or general purpose specified in the square brackets (commanderbody, etc). Raven Beak appears in three maps: Hanubia, Artaria, and Itorash. As Metroid Dread's cutscenes are executed in-engine, his model can be extracted from the map packages for the aforementioned regions.
There are several models linked to him during cutscenes that aren't part of his base model: chozocommander_arm, chozocommander_face (appears in Hanubia and after the mask breaks in Itorash), chozocommander_wing_r (which he rips off during the cutscene preceding phase 3 of his fight). chozocommander_arm is a more detailed version of his left arm that exists in the actor files for both Artaria and Itorash, the two zones where a cutscene involves the camera getting close to his arm while he chokes Samus out.
With that out of the way, our first order of business is his helmet, and there's a lot to look at.
Tumblr media
Here's a list of all his meshes. We'll go over each part as they become relevant. Relevant to our current objective is helmethead, helmethead_clean, helmethead_cinematic, and brokenmask.
You'll notice that each of these have two meshes to their name. The names that are lower on the hierarchy are the actual helmets, and those higher on the hierarchy are overlays for the eyes to make them glow.
Tumblr media
Here's what that looks like without scene lighting:
Tumblr media
With the overlay...
Tumblr media
... and without the overlay.
helmethead_clean features Raven Beak's helmet without the crack from the Super Missile: this is what we see during the opening cutscene in Artaria.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
helmethead bestows the crack over the right eye.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of all the helmet meshes, the cinematic version is the cleanest and most detailed: this one is used during parts of cutscenes where the camera zooms in on Raven Beak's face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll be using this model to explore the smaller details.
All helmet meshes except the broken mask have their own textures: the broken mask uses the basic helmethead's textures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
brokenmask (left) and brokenmask01 (right). These are used to animate the sequence where the helmet breaks in the post-boss fight cutscene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Earlier, I mentioned that the cinematic mesh is cleaner than the others. The textures and geometry on the cinematic mesh are crisper and more defined because it's used when we want to get a good look at his face: you don't need to see every plane of his beak in high definition during combat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's a closeup of each primary model for the helmet to demonstrate. From left to right, we have helmethead_clean, helmethead, and helmethead_cinematic. helmethead_clean appears to have the lowest clarity in its textures. helmethead is passable, but the planes on helmethead_cinematic are leagues cleaner: there's very little artifacting (the janky crunch affiliated with lower quality jpgs), the colors appear richer, and effort was made to define the negative space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at the owl-shaped crest in the center of the headdress (helmethead left, helmethead_cinematic right): there are darker lines between the arch behind the head, and care was put into darkening the spaces between the eyebrows, around the eyes, etc.
I've already hit the image limit, so we're going to examine the details on his face even further in another post: I've waited so long to share all the little differences between these helmet meshes in excruciating detail, so I suppose it's only fitting that our first entry is more about that than it is showing off the finer details of the headdress and mask themselves.
I would not have been able to dive this deep a year ago when the image limit was capped at 10. I hope they increase it further so I can inflict you with more model facts.
I am working on the second post. The navigation section at the top of the post will be updated as things go live.

Tumblr media
Because it's come up twice in one week, I'm making a post about Raven Beak's face.
I've had interesting conversations within the past few days wherein I've learned that some people think Raven Beak's eponymous muncher looks like a metal prosthetic or augmentation. A valid take, and one that makes me wonder what else people have theorized that I haven't even conceived of (or how many of my assumptions are not universal).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are a few shots of Raven Beak's face under render preview lighting. This model is separate from the body, and is named "chozocommander_face". The textures are packaged delightfully under the name "commander_nakedhead".
The model consists of three different meshes: ChozoCommander_Face, ChozoCommander_Face_Eyes, and ChozoCommander_Face_WhiteEyes.
I'm going to preface this next section by informing you that I've exported several different versions of the nakedhead model. This model is linked to two different map groups: Hanubia and Itorash. Do I need two? No. Did I export two identical versions of the same model anyways? Yes. That's a long way of saying "don't mind the fact that his head looks a tad different in a few of these next few images, I have two slightly different head setups."
I've modified the node setup for the shading on the eyes to make them appear as they do in-game.
Tumblr media
Here's how both eye meshes look without tinkering with the shading...
Tumblr media
...and here's my second commander_head demonstrating modifications to the node setup for the eyes.
It's going to take several posts to talk about his helmet alone, so strap in for that.
2024 update: his helmet is covered here.

Note
Do you think at some point during the game Samus already had a hunch that this was not ADAM she was talking with?
I think Raven Beak does a generally good job at pretending to be ADAM: in Fusion, the AI was not shy in warning Samus that she had a small chance of defeating her foes, so Raven Beak's posturing could come across as ADAM genuinely calculating that Samus is still too weak to face a giant Chozo general.
That being said, it says a lot that she apparently never noticed the lack of "any objections, lady?". Maybe she thought "finally he dropped that dumb nickname" lmao
I believe that the tipping point for Samus was "fulfill your destiny", which Raven Beak says shortly before their showdown. That is an extremely weird line for ADAM, or even the real Adam, to say, so when she lands on Itorash, she might have already put two and two together.
