I hope none of you are sleeping on this movie on Netflix: Akelarre, also called Coven. It's a basque film from 2020 about a group of teenage girls being accused of being witches in 1609. Don't worry, it's actually pretty good. None of that American puritan influence, this is a European catholic witch hunt.

International Queer Cinema

Hey everyone!

My name is Tom Slater II, I am a senior at Bridgewater State University. I am majoring in Theatre with a minor in Film. This blog is for my Global Cinema course and I'll be blogging about International Queer Cinema! This topic is very important to me, as I am queer myself, and I find that the conversation around international queer cinema is lacking and deserves a proper deep dive. Throughout this blog experience, I will be discussing many different queer films from many different countries from all over the world. Being queer is hard in the United States, but not every country is as hard and some are harder. Looking through the lens of cinema, we will be able to get a general feeling of what the queer culture is like in these films' respective countries. I will also be discussing articles and stories that tie in to these films, in some capacity, to provide context. The concept of queer cinema is quite self-explanatory: films about queer stories. These stories are often glazed over and not given a chance to spark actual conversations and be taken seriously due to the subject matter. This is something I hope to change with this blog!
