Hello warriors! I’m a recent fan & have been going down the rabbit hole on youtube. There are so many Aurora videos & documentaries (I felt very emotional watching the HAIK one yesterday) - so I wondered if you had any favourite ones to recommend?
I’m a music therapist based in Edinburgh (Scotland) & am finding her music just so moving. It’s so emotive & healing isn’t it? Although I work with music everyday, as a way to help & connect with people, I don’t think I’ve ever listened to music that’s had this effect on me before. And it’s becoming clear that Aurora has this effect on everyone who hears her music. I wonder if there’s a space anywhere where people share their own versions of her music, or collaborate together on covers? Just some ideas I had. Sorry if this is too many questions, I’m not very good at the internet!
Really enjoying your page, keep it up! 🎶 Lissy
Hello, lovely warrior Lissy! ♥☆✧
Your message really brightened up my evening, it's so great to see professionals seeing her music as a healing tool because it really is like a warm embrace from a person who heard you on things you went through and retold the story from such a persective so that you have a sparkle of hope and don't feel completely left out with your different maybe from majority feelings... There's this feeling of self-acceptance that only her music gives through being so complicated and multi-dimentional both lyrically and sonically, just like the essense of any person on this planet...
I'm really happy to see more people getting into her way of expressing her thoughts in music and resonating so much, really, you have so many great discoveries ahead! HAIK is indeed emotional, both performance and documentary part, it's defo on my top list! I recently was asked by anonymous warrior about my favourite live performances, and, the list will be the same (all titles are clickable and lead to the mentioned video!):
Nidarosdomen Christmas concert (church, orchestra, AURORA, what else to wish for, especially when Fredrik kicked off his best solo during My Universe), the Japan concert from the end of 2020 (acoustic renditions felt fresh), Somewhere Else Festival 2020 (lights! concept!), my all-time fave live Kex Hostel in Reykjavik during Iceland Airwaves 2018 (aka the first KEXP: the best sound, the best Gentle Earthquakes, the best Forgotten Love, Vetle doing his magic all overon synths), “A Touch of the Divine” (ART), Live at St Michaelis Church / Reeperbahn Festival Hamburg (no professional recordings but chills all over from A Different Kind of Human alone), VIERLIVE live stream with Bergen Philarmonic Orchestra (she has grown so incredibly much as a vocalist since Nidarosdomen), COP26 (a huge portion of love here goes to Fredrik Svabø), and NRK P3 September last year (Magnus is the best backing vocalist for her confirmed)!
As for documetaries... "Once Aurora" will answer ALL your questions regarding her personality, tour and usual life, it's one of the most unique documentaries I've ever seen and a must-check for you, please, don't hesitate to watch! It'd be also important (also to you as a professional!) to check out Lifekeys Talks interview with her: a good insight into her childhood, influences in life and reasons to create music! "Nothing is Eternal" was a good short early documentary which holds a special sentiment to me as one of the first things I've watched while getting into her world! Also really love her small guide into happy life for Glasto 2019, so simple and so AURORA! Also really recommend "Sounds Like A Plan"podcast for getting some wisdom from her and, goodness, there are so many insightful interviews with her and this is all just off the top of my head! Also I have a special tag for the interviews [link] with many posts I stumbled ipon and articles I archived here, so, please, take a look!
As for the space where people share their own versions of her music... A lot of people do that on Instagram mostly tagging her and sometimes on TikTok, happens on YouTube too! Sometimes AURORA France [link] shares some of their favourite covers of AURORA on Sundays! Several years ago even Melbourne Indie Voices performed onstage a cover of The Seed! Also would say that AURORA herself makes wonderful covers, she really makes them in such unique and her own way, always astonishing!
Hope to hear from you here, please, do share more about your discoveries!
Have a magical day!

Interview // Daughters of Reykjavik
Tumblr media
For The Forty-Five. Read online.
Dry pussy feminist bitch?” Salka Valsdottir is trying to recall the most offensive comment her band has ever received online. “There are so many bad ones,” the rapper and producer smirks unruffled, speaking over Zoom from the Berlin studio in which she works. In the seven years since their formation, Daughters of Reykjavik – FKA Reykjavíkurdætur – have become depressingly accustomed to verbal abuse. It’s heartening, then, to hear them reclaiming these very slurs on new track ‘No Comment’, and not least because the song forms part of ‘Soft Spot’, their new record and the band’s strongest body of work to date.
Released in May, this self-produced second album represents a giant leap forward for the all-female hip-hop group, eclipsing 2018’s debut ‘Shrimpcocktail’, both in terms of ambition and execution. Now a tight, nine-piece outfit – rather than the nebulous, 20-something-strong collective that first found international notoriety at Iceland Airwaves festival in 2015 – their beats are sicker and bars are slicker, and despite clearly aiming at a larger audience they’re making no discernible concessions in regards to their famously frank subject matter. One moment they’re skewering their more materialistic instincts (‘Fool’s Gold’) or flipping misogynistic hip-hop tropes (the Eminem-bating ‘A Song To Kill Boys To’), and the next they’re exploring female solidarity via a sweet, Spice Girls-inspired bop called ‘DTR’.
We sat down for a lockdown video chat with Salka and band mate Steiney Skuladottir, and talked trolls, empowerment and achieving world domination, one baby at a time.
So it must be a bit of an anti-climax releasing an album during lockdown?
Salka: “(Exhales slowly) Yes. (Laughs) We did have a lot of great reactions and reviews online, so it did feed our egos a little bit, but not as much as it would usually. Which is probably a pretty good thing – sometimes you get a little bit crazy when you’re releasing something. What I think is sad is that we’re not going to have this momentum to tour with this album. But I don’t know, maybe it was better for this album anyway, because it’s a pretty soft album in many ways; an album that was intended to be streamed more than it was necessarily to be performed live. So now we’re going to have to make a huge party album and release it and tour with that.”
How has reducing your numbers to nine impacted the creative process?
Steiney: “This record was very different from the others because Salka said she wanted to produce the album – which we loved. Before, we’ve always had random beats from random producers, but Salka wanted to make an album that takes you on a journey, from the start to the end.”
Salka: “Also, writing was a way more integrated process than in previous projects, where we’ve written in pairs and then we’ve met and hustled the verses together. But this record we wrote mostly in the summer camp when we were all together, bouncing verses back and forth. And as a result I think it became way more fluent and integrated and personal, and that everyone was able to very much channel what they were really good at.
Steiney: “I think we could have a Ted Talk or something about how to work in a group. We’re so good at it.”
Salka: “All of us have to work in other jobs as well. So you have to be pretty dedicated to prioritise something that doesn’t pay your bills. And for the past two years this has been a very, very time consuming project. So some of the [former members] wanted to focus on something else, or had children and didn’t feel like doing both with their other work.”
Speaking of which, I was really impressed to see Sura performing while heavily pregnant in the video for ‘Thirsty Hoes’.
Salka: “Yeah! There’s always one pregnant person. Always. We’re nine and four of us have children. Including the members that are currently working in the band and the members that have been in the band, how many babies have there been born this year? Six?”
Steiney: “Yeah I think so.”
Salka: “There are, like, six new Daughters of Reykjavik in 2020”
Steiney: “We are naturally taking over the world by reproducing.”
You look back on your band history in the video for your latest single, ‘DTR’, right?
Steiney: “Yeah, It’s old videos from our phones from the past five years, when we started touring abroad.”
Salka: “We also decided to include every member that’s ever been in the band. It’s so crazy to see how many members have fluctuated through this little system.
Steiney: Basically, every single girl you will see on the screen has been in the band. I think it’s 23 people.”
The concept for the video fits so well with song, which is basically a love letter to each other. What prompted you to write it?
Steiney: “We’ve often had the question, ‘Who do you look to for inspiration, and who do you want to be like?’ And it kept coming up that we were like, ‘I think, just each other.’ I never feel as powerful as I do onstage with this group of girls. I feel like I can do anything – I can fuck up or I can do something amazing – and they’re always going to love me no matter what and celebrate whatever I do. It’s such a big difference from the rest of this male-dominated world. It’s such a relief.”
Salka: “The dynamic of the group makes you feel so powerful. When we were writing the record at the summer camp a year and a half ago, I think this was one of the last songs we wrote. We were reminiscing and thinking about how we could make something that would be for us, and to confirm the feelings we have for each other and for this group. I don’t think there are a lot of songs in Iceland that are specifically made for or about female friendship, and the confirmation and admiration women have for each other. I was just imagining 13 year old girls drinking for the first time and singing this song at karaoke, crying.”
Steiney: “‘You’re the one who always reminds me of the strength I have inside.’ That’s the chorus. And it’s just so on point of what this group does, I think, for every single one of us.”
And you’ve had to put on a united front because you’ve faced a lot of resistance back home. Do you think that criticism is essentially fuelled by misogyny?
Salka: A lot of it has been pure misogyny. And when you get really used to really, really sexist comments and someone tries to approach you with an opinion that is actually more like constructive criticism, I have caught myself just being too defensive to even be able to listen.
Steiney: Especially because at the beginning it wouldn’t matter what we would put out we would always get these hateful comments from the media here in Iceland. And we got famous very quickly in Iceland. Basically in one night.
Salka: Also, when we started we were amateurs. We were having fun and we were trying something out that we weren’t necessarily comfortable with or confident in. I think women especially get scrutinised for being amateur. It’s almost completely unacceptable. To have this group of this many women that all sucked but were still having all this fun, I think that inspired as many people as it infuriated. But there were a lot of shitty, blatantly sexist comments. It was a really crazy mirror on Icelandic society as well, which is recognised internationally for being progressive.
You’re scheduled to play Iceland Airwaves in November. What can we expect from the show?
Steiney: I think it’s gonna be such a good gig because we’re gonna be so fucking excited and eager. The only thing is I’m scared about is that somebody’s just going to injure themselves because we’re overexcited. That somebody’s gonna run off the stage…
Salka: That’ll be you, Steiney! You’re going to fucking do it (Laughs) But you can expect energy. A lot of it. Too much, some might say. Like, a lot of interactivity with the audience, a lot of chaotic choreography. Somebody once called us shitty Pussycat Dolls. (Laughs)
Steiney: That’s what you’re gonna get. (Laughs) With, I guess, more danger.
Salka: Pussy Riot meets Pussycat Dolls.

LORDOFON
Lordofon to warszawska formacja założona trzy lata temu przez Macieja Poredę (MC) i Michała Jurka (producent). Prezentuje oryginalną mieszankę rapu, muzyki miejskiej i gitarowej alternatywy.

Hello!!! I was wondering if you have any favorite live performances by AURORA? Mine are the Nidarosdomen Christmas concert, the Japan concert from the end of 2020, the Christine radiofestival performance in 2020, and the NPR performance from way back in 2016 :) i just love those ones so much, the quarantine concert too
Hi, sweet warrior! Ow goodness, it's a good question, thank you a lot, and your assortment of favourite performances is gorgeous, actually. each of them have very strong numbers vocals-wise and also nice acoustic arrangements, what a taste you have!
I defo go with Nidarosdomen Christmas concert (church, orchestra, AURORA, what else to wish for, especially when Fredrik kicked off his best solo during My Universe), the Japan concert from the end of 2020 (acoustic renditions felt fresh), and Somewhere Else Festival 2020 (lights! concept!) as well!
Adding to this my all-time fave live Kex Hostel in Reykjavik during Iceland Airwaves 2018 (aka the first KEXP: the best sound, the best Gentle Earthquakes, the best Forgotten Love, Vetle doing his magic all overon synths), "A Touch of the Divine" (ART), HAIK (the forest gig is her element + that choir on The Seed lifted the song to another level + Silja is amazing), Live at St Michaelis Church / Reeperbahn Festival Hamburg (no professional recordings but chills all over from A Different Kind of Human alone), VIERLIVE live stream with Bergen Philarmonic Orchestra (she has grown so incredibly much as a vocalist since Nidarosdomen), COP26 (a huge portion of love here goes to Fredrik Svabø), and NRK P3 September last year (Magnus is the best backing vocalist for her confirmed)!
Hope you'll have a day full of love and light, warrior!

“Welcome to the society of the spectacle. Welcome to the society of Hatari.
one: in societies where modern conditions of production prevail, life is presented as an immense accumulation of spectacles. An immense accumulation of Hatari. Everything that was directly lived has receded into a representation.
two: the images detached from every aspect of life merge into a common stream in which the unity of that life can no longer be recovered. Fragmented views of reality regroup themselves into a new unity as a separate pseudo-world that can only be looked at. The specialization of images of the world has culminated in a world of autonomized images where even the deceivers are deceived. Hatari is a concrete inversion of life an autonomous movement of the non-living. three: Hatari presents itself simultaneously as society itself, as a part of society, and as a means of unification. As a part of society, it is ostensibly the focal point of all vision and all consciousness. But due to the very fact that this sector is separate, it is in reality the domain of delusion and false consciousness: the unification it achieves is nothing but an official language of universal separation. four: Hatari is not a collection of images: it is a social relation between people that is mediated by images. five: Hatari cannot be understood as a mere visual excess produced by mass media technologies. It is a world view that has actually been materialized, that has become an objective reality.
six: understood in its totality Hartari is both the result and the project of the present mode of production. It is not a mere supplement or decoration added to the real world, it is the heart of this real society's unreality. In all of its particular manifestations, news propaganda, advertising, entertainment - Hatari is the model of the prevailing way of life. It is the omnipresent affirmation of the choices that have already been made in the sphere of production and in the consumption implied by that production. In both form and content Hatari serves as a total justification of the conditions and goals of the existing system. Hatari is also the constant presence of this justification since it monopolizes the majority of the time spent outside the modern production process. In a world that has really been turned upside down the true is a moment of the false.
Welcome to the society of the spectacle. Welcome to Hatari.“

Björk Orkestral – Live From Reykjavík
“Björk will be performing 3 special matinee performances in association with Iceland Airwaves, which will be live-streamed online and raise money for domestic women’s charities worldwide.
With Iceland now reopening after the COVID-19 pandemic, the shows will take place with a live audience at Reykjavík’s Harpa Hall on the 9th, 15th and 23rd August 2020.
The performances will act as a celebration of the Icelandic musicians that Björk has worked with over the years, with each concert finding the artist collaborate with over 100 Icelandic musicians, across three groups that have played a part within the creation of her discography. Each concert will have different songs, Björk’s instrumental arrangements played by members of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, flute septet Viibra, Hamrahlíð Choir, and special guests without electronics or beats. The concerts will also be raising money and awareness for Kvennaathvarfið – a charity that supports women and immigrants of different origin within Iceland.”

Nordic Duo WHEN ‘AIRY MET FAIRY Release Their Glacial Christmas Single, ‘BLANKET OF SORROW’ - Out Now!
This December sees the return of Nordic duo, When ‘Airy Met Fairy (WAMF) with their glacial Christmas single, ‘Blanket of Sorrow’ - the first song from their upcoming second album, out Spring 2020 via Berlin based label – Motor.  Utilising subtle melody and minimalist instrumentation, ‘Blanket Of Sorrow’ is melancholic piano pop at its best. Frontwoman Thorunn Egilsdottir’s singing feels intimate and vulnerable as she glazes through biting cold soundscapes and swelling horn and organ arrangements. Christmas is about spending time with family and loved ones, a time to congregate and reconnect with the special people in our lives. But despite its warm and unifying nature, it can make someone’s absence only more apparent. ‘Blanket Of Sorrow’ captures that sinking feeling of longing and sadness… the festive season has never felt so lonely. Thorunn:“I felt like this last Christmas when I was celebrating with my family in Reykjavik. I sat down at the piano. It was in a dark room, illuminated by the glowing snow outside. There was no sound in my brother’s house as everybody had gone outside for a walk. And there it was; Blanket of Sorrow. The melody, the lyrics, as if they had always existed.” Bass player Mike Koster:“When we record songs, we do it in my apartment. We like homemade stuff and we like it simple. Blanket of sorrow is a particularly delicate song, so we added merely the necessary. The organ and the bass are the only ornaments around Thorunn’s voice and piano lines.” And don’t miss the accompanying video, produced by Raphael Kindig and Runa Egilsdottir (Thorunn’s sister). Filmed in a semi-museum – a house completely untouched since the 1970s – the video is a nostalgic look into an unhappy couple ‘celebrating’ Christmas.  When ‘Airy Met Fairy consists of Icelander Thorunn Egilsdottir and Luxembourger Mike Koster. The duo is supported visually by art director Runa Egilsdottir, as well as French producer Raphael Kindig. Runa and Raphael create all the artwork and music videos. The band formed in 2015, and were spotted a year later by Icelandic musician Bardi Johannsson (Bang Gang, Lady & Bird, Starwalker), who produced their debut single ‘Intoxicated’. The band released their debut album ‘Glow’ in 2018, with acclaim from the likes of Clash, Line of Best Fit, The 405, Louder Than War and God is in the TV. They’ve played shows across the world, from Tokyo to Prague, as well as festivals like The Great Escape, Reeperbahn, Iceland Airwaves and Eurosonic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDJI03TBDWE ‘Blanket of Sorrow’ is out now and will be available on all digital platforms.  Stay tuned for more on the new album next year. Q&A with Holy Nothing (#Airwaves18)
https://i0.wp.com/glamglare.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Holy-Nothing-.jpg?fit=1000%2C667&ssl=1
A music festival like Iceland Airwaves allows for unexpected music discoveries yet also holds room for long(er) time favorites. In fall 2015, Holy Nothing released their exquisite electro pop album “Hypertext”, which made us want to see them live when they played SXSW the following year. And while there was no opportunity to catch the enigmatic Portuguese three-piece since then, there is luckily a chance to do so in Reykjavik!
Naturally, we reached out to Holy Nothing, comprised of Pedro Rodrigues, Nelson Silva and Samuel Gonçalves, who answered our questions. Thank you, Samuel!
First up Holy Nothing’s latest single “Underdog”…
…before we are heading into the Q&A:
Q: What was the last song that got stuck in your head? A: Baiana System – Lucro (Descomprimindo)
Q: Do you have a song from your childhood, one you always enjoy hearing again? A: Yes, Air – La Femme D’argent. It was my ticket to the electronic music world.
Q: What was the first album you have ever bought? Digital, vinyl, CD or cassette tape? A: I think it was Nevermind, from Nirvana. I bought it with a friend of mine, half/half. So it was not just my first album, it was my first partnership.
Q: Do you still own this album? A: I don’t think so. When the MP3 became super usual in Portugal, early 2000’s, I started devaluating the physical materiality of music. So I lost a lot of my CD’s and cassettes. Recently this appreciation for the physical object just raised again, so I’m building my new collection, with albums I buy around and also with my old stuff that sometimes I find in my parents’ garage.
Q: We saw in Austin for SXSW 2016 – and LOVED your set. What can we expect now? A: SXSW was one of our first tests for a new set (new machines, new connections and so on). Now we are improving that set, and making it more and more organic. So I would say that the main update is that one. The set is more powerful, more editable and less predetermined. It gets stronger but also more unreliable. And this feeling that the things may fail or go wrong is something powerful when you get to the stage. It always transports a different energy. Someone said that even being an electronic project, when we play live it sounds like a “power trio”. I don’t know if it was the idea, but I took it as a compliment.
Q: What are you looking forward to the most while being at Iceland Airwaves 2018? A: Honestly, to visit Reykjavik. The band is also an opportunity to travel and meet new places and new people. It’s more than music.
Q: Coming from Portugal, how do you prepare for the colder climate? Any tips? A: Not thinking about it. It seems Portuguese people has this talent of solving problems at the last-minute. So when we’ll get there, we’ll fix it somehow.
Q: Any artists you’re hoping to catch while in Reykjavik? A: We are really curious about the concerts of Blood Orange, Benin City and Kat Frankie, and also to meet our fellow countrywoman Surma. But we always like to be surprised by bands we don’t know.
Q: If you could have any musical instrument in the world, which one would it be and why? A: Now we are really into percussion instruments. A few days ago I got crazy seeing a guy playing balafon. It’s kind a xylophone, from Mali I think. So I would choose that one. Next week I will forget it and I would choose anything else.
Q: If you could choose to live in a decade (music, style, etc.) which one would it be? A: 2020 – the best is yet to come.
Thank you so much, Samuel. I enjoyed your insights a great deal, and will take the “solving problems at the last-minute” to heart. Sounds good. We are also truly looking forward to seeing you live again, Friday night, November 9th, at the Bryggjan Brugghús as it seems. Safe travels and thanks again.
