They sit at the small conference table. Jenny and Ian on one side. Jamie and Murtagh on the other. The four of them and the owners of the Lallybroch. Ellen Fraser said she would rather enjoy her grandchildren then run the hotel. That is what she is doing, watching Ian Jr. and Maggie while their parents attend the meeting.

“We have only one empty room right now. Not bad for the off season. Two are long term rentals. The other four will be changing out over the next few days so their rooms will need a good going over. Shall we bring in the Fitzgibbons again?” Jenny is asking.

“They did a good job last time.” Murtagh replies.

“I agree.”

“Jamie, do you have an opinion about who should come in and clean the emptying rooms?”

He jerks and returns to the conversation. “Ah, the Fitzgibbons were good.” His Godfather smacks his arm.

“That is who we were voting on you numpty. Were is your head?”

Jenny snickers. “Don’t.” her brother warns. “The Fitzgibbons will do fine.”

“Alright, moving on…”

“Wait Jenny.” Her husband places his hand over here. “I want to know what you and Jamie are hiding.”

“As do I.”

“You or me?” Her eyebrows raise.

“Bloody hell! Not that it has anything to do with this meeting but…” Again his sister smirks. “I have been seeing someone.”

“You have a lass Jamie?”

“Have being the important word.”

“Jenny, for the love of God, would you shut your nab.” He blows his breath out. “In honesty, we haven’t made it out of her room.”

The other men raise their eyebrows. “Jamie, I wouldn’t have chosen you to be one to have a fling.”

“Nor would I Ian. There is just something about her. She drew me in as surely as the moon draws the tide. I couldn’t resist her.”

“How did you meet her?”

He sighs before answering Murtagh. This is the part that makes him nervous. “She dropped her bags right outside her door. I helped her bring them in.”

Stunned silence. “She is a guest?” Ian finally asks.

“Yes.”

“Wow. Does she know who you are?”

“Not really. She knows I manage a hotel but not this one.”

Again his Godfather smacks him. “You nutter! You are sleeping with her and she doesn’t know you are an owner?”

“I told him not to tell her.” They all look to Jenny. “I fear she will think he took advantage or she will try to take advantage of him.”

“Janet Murray!”

“Ian she is here for three months. It isn’t like she is the love of his life.”

“How do you know that?” Jamie stands, his fisted hands on the table. “She just might be.”

“The lad might be right. Come Jenny, you recall what your father told both of you. He said that you would both know the right one when you looked at them and couldn’t look away.”

“He seems to only want one thing from her.”

“Again, how do you know that. I have asked her what will happen after the three months.”

“She said?”

“She doesn’t know yet. But I want more.”

“Let’s get back to the agenda.” Ian sees his best mate needs a break.

365 Day Movie Challenge (2017) - #344: Perrier’s Bounty (2009) - dir. Ian Fitzgibbon

I was surprised and delighted by Perrier’s Bounty, a fast-paced crime comedy about a couple of days in the life of Michael McCrea (Cillian Murphy), a Dubliner who owes some serious gambling debts. We follow Michael on a weird and amusing journey to obtaining cash, including helping some associates on a breaking-and-entering job, stealing a cop car and getting into a few gunfights. Michael is accompanied on by his long-estranged father, Jim (Jim Broadbent), who claims that he is dying, and Michael’s neighbor Brenda (Jodie Whittaker), with whom Michael is clearly in love. Refreshingly, Brenda is lovely without being a typical Manic Pixie Dream Girl. The trio continually get into messy scrapes that push Michael further to the edge of being caught by the various collectors.

Brendan Gleeson brings his customary mix of toughness and humor to the role of Darren Perrier, the kingpin who puts a price on Michael’s head after our protagonist - or rather, I should say, Brenda - causes the death of one of Perrier’s beloved henchmen. Along the way we also see supporting turns from Brendan’s son, Domhnall Gleeson, as a pool-playing drug dealer whose dress sense is stuck in the early 1970s, Liam Cunningham and Michael McElhatton as two of Perrier’s minions, and Brendan Coyle and Conleth Hill as a local pair of dog-breeders. Perrier’s Bounty throws a few welcome twists our way as the narrative winds to its offbeat conclusion, resulting in a film that is clearly underrated, given the mixed reviews from critics. I’m not saying that Cillian Murphy’s performance here is the best he’s ever given - as unfair as this comparison will seem, Disco Pigs is obviously a superior Irish film - but Perrier’s Bounty certainly deserves a look.
