So taking the BJU faculty salary average and comparing it to their benchmarks, you can see that there was a bump for 2020-21, but then things leveled out.

Timothée featured today in a new Variety article:
Tumblr media
“He took every kid’s hand who came. He took a photograph with everybody who asked him, which was pretty much everyone. That was about his heart. But he’s also very savvy about marketing. He gets very engaged and brings ideas to the table.”
-Wonka producer David Heyman talking about Timothée’s idea to screen ‘Wonka’ to the children of After-School All-Stars
Tumblr media
“I can’t imagine any other actor on the planet who could have played Willy Wonka and have the success that ‘Wonka’ had. You need everything to work in today’s world. IP alone is not sufficient. He [Timothée] wants to win, he knows how to win and he asks the right questions. He respects and cares about his fans. He feels a responsibility toward them.”
-Josh Goldstine, Warner Bros. president of worldwide marketing
Tumblr media
“We can count on one or two hands, in any age range, the people who are legitimate movie stars. Timothée is absolutely that.”
-Dune producer Mary Parent

The Best Degrees for High Paying Jobs
I want to preface this with saying that getting a degree that aligns with career options that pay above average salaries does not guarantee than you will actually get those jobs, or those salaries. Several factors like demand, location, your skills, and work experience play a big role. In some cases, advanced degrees can also increase your earning potential.
However, if you want to get a degree to align you with a high paying job, these are the jobs/degrees that typically pay the best salaries.
Medicine: Doctors, Surgeons, Psychiatrists.
Dental: Dentist, Oral surgeons.
Law: Corporate lawyers, IP attorneys, Litigators.
IT and computer science: Engineer, IT Manager, Architect, Data scientist.
Engineers: Computer engineer, Chemical, Aerospace, Electrical.
MBA: CEO, Consultant, Development Manager.
Finance: Finance Manager, Analyst.
Statistics: Research Analyst.
Aviation: Pilot.
Pharmaceutical: Research Scientist, Sales Rep.
Architecture.
Physics: Physicist, Scientist.
Nurse: Anethetist, Nurse Practitioner, Hospital Admin.

I'm not sure how movies are supposed to be made with anything more demanding than what the averaged student film at a minor film school would require under the presumably preferred world of anti-IP discourse where there are no restrictions on pirating movies or exhibiting pirated movies. After all, making a movie requires gathering a lot of people together and getting them to work towards a common goal of realizing a completed film, and much of the labor involved is not particularly fulfilling in its own terms, but it is frankly incredible to think that any of this labor would be compensated under such a system.
Perhaps all movies would be made on state salaries and with state-owned production firms. My personal preference would be to make movies through conscripted labor at gunpoint, and shoot a grip or lighting technician every so often pour encourager les autres. But I think the most likely outcome of such an unlikely system is that film dies out altogether without any system to enable the complex array of labor necessary to make a movie. Perhaps that's worth it?

Are we all secretly Argentinian? A brief history of VPN in Beemoov's fandom
Once upon a time, when only High School Life and maybe Eldarya TO were out, players were able to choose their own bank when making a purchase on the games websites. Some banks were extremely cheap compared to others, the cheapest of all being Argentina. This from the perspective of people living in other countries. As an example:
2800 Gold coins were worth 39€ or 49$ or 400 ARS 400 ARS were the equivalent of 27$ in 2016.
So, clearly, anyone given the chance would spend less with such a big discount. And the chance was indeed given, since it was easy to just select another country's bank on the website.
Fast-forward a few years, the option to choose a bank was removed, and people could only use the bank associated to the country they were connecting from. It didn’t take much time for people to realise that it was enough to change IP via a VPN to make the games think you were connecting from Argentina and still access its bank. Additionally, Argentinian's currency was getting more and more devaluated in time and prices were never really adjusted at the bank. So, those 2800 Gold which were worth 400ARS or 27$ in 2016, were now worth 11$ in 2019.
This VPN trick has been around for years now. Not all players were aware of course, and not everyone was comfortable in using a VPN or able to. But still, quite a lot of people were doing so. Some of them even made a business out of it, recharging other people's accounts using a VPN and taking a fee for their "service".
Fast-forward again, to 2022. The VPN trick escalated, the secret was not that much of a secret anymore, especially because people were freely talking about it everywhere, Discord, Facebook, all social media really, even TikTok videos were made explaining how to do it. Very simply, too many people were using it. Consequently, Beemoov worked on it and managed to remove Argentina's bank from most VPNs for people playing from Europe and North America. (NOT South America, as I vaguely remember it was mentioned that they were trying to protect the Argentinians living in nearby countries). This led to a crazy uproar, mostly from the biggest fandom affected, the French one. People were leaving tons of messages on all socials demanding the reinstatement of Argentina, and also sending curses and death threats to Beemoov employees. The most recurrent message was of people outraged that the company had blocked VPNs without telling their players and demanding dialogue and compromise. On the other hand, Beemoov replied that VPNs were never a functionality of the games, and they don't need to discuss it with players.
Tumblr media
Approximate translation of Beemoov's official reply (neither French nor English are my mother tongues so feel free to double check):
"Goodmorning. The use of VPN isn't a functionality offered by the game, just like it isn't normal use of the game to circumvent the base tariffs. Thus it's normal and logic that the company would put a stop at this technique. (Without having to communicate it since it's not a functionality of the game that we are retiring or modifying, but the exploitation of a fallacy.) The tariffs that each country pays are established according to their buying power. Of the 2 euros payment that can be done by the players via VPN Argentina, the company only earns a few cents. And with just a few cents it's clearly impossible to cover the costs of the episodes production and business costs in general, pay our employees, and create new content for our players. Under these conditions, it's certain that the company would eventually go bankrupt. (Like many of you wish, but us not that much.) To give you a less abstract example, it's as if someone would accept to see their salary of 1329 euros (minimum wage, for example) drop to 44 euros. Do you think this person would be able to live without any problem? We are sorry if our base tariffs are not convenient for you and we understand that they are not accessible to all of our players, but these are what allow the company to survive and to make new content. Of course like in all free-to-play games you are not obliged to pay and you always have the possibility of playing for free (and this is thanks to the players who pay the normal price)."
Fast forward again to this year, August 2023. The economic crisis in Argentina has led to high inflation and 22% devaluation of currency. All businesses have had to up their prices, including Beemoov. Those 2800 gold coins that used to be worth 400 ARS ~ 27$ in 2016, and then 11$ in 2019? Are now worth 1.14$. Beemoov has had to up the prices and now these are costed at 6,800 ARS (or 19.43$), an increment of 17 times its original value (but still less than the 2016 dollar equivalent).
Consequently, we have seen now the rest of the fandom, the part that hadn't been affected one year ago, going ballistic. And the same kind of threats and complaints that were posted last year by the European fandom are now posted by the American fandom. One would assume that only the Argentinians are complaining, rightfully so, since they are the ones directly affected. But actually most of the complaints come from people living elsewhere who were either using VPNs for their own benefit or created a business out of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(these are from 4 different people I found with just a 5 minutes search, we really live in a capitalist dream lmao)
Additionally, people have been upset about the company's reply. This message has been circulating in several social media, and people wonder if it's true or fake.
Tumblr media
I don't know who originally posted so I can't say if it's true or not. (Personally I tend to believe it is.)
(Using Google translate here because I don't know a word of Portuguese, so please correct me if this is wrong.)
"To be fair, Latin America is far from our biggest customer, but that's not the point. Beemoov was forced to take action after numerous abuses by players (and in particular 80% of purchases from Brazil) using VPNs to connect to Argentina and take advantage of this country's poor financial situation to buy APs and other in-game currencies. The few players currently residing in Argentina are unfortunately affected by the situation and we are very sorry, but we could not remain inactive in the face of a fraud of this magnitude that puts the company's sustainability at risk (payment of employees, office rent, work equipment, taxes, creation of new content, etc... Each of these must be paid in euros following the French currency - as we are located in France)."
People have been particularly offended by that "LATAM isn't our biggest customer" which isn't hate, it's a fact. Despite the LATAM fandom being big (second only to France by number of players), the currencies of all the countries involved are worth less than euros, and that's why it can't be the biggest client, it's just math.
Some math below for who is interested, but feel free to skip: For example 1300 gold are costed 200 in mexican pesos which is 10.7 euros. Similarly this same amount of gold is 30BRL in Brazil, which translates to 1.6 euros. Compared, 1300 gold in France are costed 19 euros. (On top of these there are also bank fees and currency exchange fees). This means that, if no one were using VPN, it would take two mexican players for Beemoov to earn the same amount as they earn from a French player. And even more, 12 Brazillian players to pay what they get from one single French player. (Again, I'm not considering bank fees, so these numbers should actually be higher). Of course this is just an example on one single purchase. It's not representative of the whole bank. But with some very hacky math, approximately I think that LATAM doesn't contribute to more than a quarter of Beemoov's revenue (and keep in mind that for the past year LATAM could use Argentina VPN and Europe couldn't). Of course, again, this is veeeery approximate, but I remember Brazil wasn't included in Uncoven, so I think that if they are cutting another bank in the future it might be that one. This is not the case for New Gen of course since we know Brazillian is one of the languages included.
So, where are we now?
VPNs are still being used of course, not Argentina but other countries (mostly Brazil, Turkey, and a few others). I don't think there's any stopping VPNs for good in the old games, but I'm pretty confident the company might've found a way for New Gen.
What do I think of all this?
These up here are facts. Now my personal opinion is that things aren't that black and white. I totally agree with the fact that the company has expenses and needs to pay salaries of their employees etc etc. At the same time it's also true that for whatever business when a product is faulty prices are lowered. Eldarya ANE has not the same quality as the other games, prices should reflect that but they don't. Similarly, some episodes are released very bugged, and people have to replay 3, 4, 5 times to get the illustration they would've been able to get in one playthrough and should be compensated for that. In Moonlight Lovers there was a crazy bug for more than a year, me and the friends I made guides with had to replay each episode at least 5-8 times. I don't even want to try to estimate the amount of money I wasted on that game otherwise I would curl in a ball and cry. The company should've provided compensation to us and all the players who played Moonlight Lovers during that year, but they didn't. So when episodes are bugged and people have to replay many times I see VPNs as morally justified.
But bugs asides, the point is that if VPNs were used only a few times, and only by those players who really would not be able to play otherwise, then nothing would've happened. But as always, when something is abused the "authorities" try to put a stop to it. (Because really it's crazy that a middle-class European via VPN spends only a few cents on each episode and then expects to see more content. This isn't only fraud against the company, but also disrespectful toward the players who pay full price and allow the games to keep existing.)
However, I want to end this post with a positive message, if anyone made it this far it's earned. During my deep dive in the fandom to write this post, I saw that the trolls, the haters, the death and violence threats against Beemoov workers or other players, the wishes to see the company go bankrupt and everyone left without a job, all these came from Europeans and Americans alike. Seeing all these curses and threats in english, french, spanish, brazillian portuguese etc warmed my heart. There is no racism when it comes to hate, humanity sucks everywhere 💕

would 27 be too old to go to law school? I'm constantly afraid I will be too old once I'm out and never be able to compete with younger graduates :(
Not even a little.
First off, you're only "behind" (and I'm using so, so many quotes) by 4-5 years. That's nothing. When I was in law school, I was in class and hung out with a number of full-fledged adults who already had established careers, partners or spouses, children, etc. but had gone back to get their JD. In many ways, they were more thoughtful, more interesting, better students, because they had already been in the world for a time. They knew themselves, and how to manage their work, along with a punishing schedule.
Additionally, these students often had experience that made them highly prized by law firms---if you already have your MPH or have been a practicing nurse, if you've been working as a chemical engineer for the past few years, it signals to law firms that you have specialized knowledge that 3 years of law school simply doesn't grant. Even if you haven't been learning different coding languages, you still probably know how to send a professional email, speak with clarity, collaborate, and those skills have value too.
Now, if you want to follow the stereotypical track for a high-achieving law student---T14 law school, nab a summer associate gig or federal clerkship, ride that to a six-figure salary at a Chambers-ranked firm---it might be a little trickier. A little. Not because you're not capable, but because you might not fit the outline hiring managers and partners expect; in that case you'll have to work harder to catch their attention. I definitely don't think it's a complete bar (swanky law firms want to hire engineers-turned-IP lawyers too!) but something to keep in mind.
My advice when it comes to law school is always to go in with an absolutely clear-eyed understanding of what you want out of it. If you don't have that yet, if you're just tired of your current job and looking for something else, don't go. But if you've thought about this, gone back and forth and considered all the pros and cons, and you know? Age ain't nothing but a number, baby.

So we have enough data now to really see what BJU’s financial status is like since their 501c3 change.
Total Assets are up. Way up. And expenses and revenue are down overall.
Now this might just be simply because the Press isn’t in their same bucket anymore.

Could multiple poorly received releases in a row put a studio or franchise in danger? To use Bioware as an example, both Anthem and Andromeda were not very well received. In the event that the same thing happens with DA4 (knocks on wood), would that be enough for EA to determine a 5th installment (of ME or DA) is not worth the investment, despite their previous large scale successes in both franchises?
Repeated poorly received releases may (temporarily) put a franchise on ice, but such actions are rarely truly permanent. Killer Instinct, for example, launched in 1994, had a sequel in 1996, and then lay dormant until 2013. There were three Marathon games released in 1994, 1995, and 1996 respectively, and then it lay dormant until Bungie announced the new Marathon game just a few weeks ago. IP never truly dies, it just hibernates until such time as its current owner manages to secure the funding to try to resurrect it again.
Tumblr media
Studios, on the other hand, are much less resilient and more fragile than IP. A string of failures can honestly doom a studio. I will note that a failure in this context is a release that does not reach its revenue targets. If a studio has multiple sequential failures, it is in a bad position. Its financiers will be less willing to provide funding since the chances of recouping that investment are lower. It will have trouble hiring new talent since job seekers are usually less interested in working for a studio that is consistently unsuccessful. It will have trouble retaining its existing talent for similar reasons. Studios have employees and those employees are constantly draining money from their parent company in the form of salaries, benefits, overhead, and so on. Operating a studio for the multiple years it takes to develop a game without financial sustainability is a very tall order.
Tumblr media
Publishers are not charities, they are businesses. In my experience, they will give successful studios freedom to do as they please, and they will give opportunities for unsuccessful studios to rescue themselves, but these self-rescuing opportunities are limited in number by necessity. If the publisher doesn't think the studio is salvageable, then it makes business sense to shut it down.

"the loss of the long form serialized storytelling in comics in favor of writing for the trade has done so much damage to character relationships"
Yeah, but also:
Almost all Marvel/DC writers are still paid by output on a project by project basis. At ~$100 a page, that's $25,200 a year for a 21 page monthly book, no benefits, very rarely royalties for book sales. The incentive is to work on multiple titles as fast as possible. Any back research for character detail is a labor of fan love: that's unpaid work, and dealing with maybe 2-3x as many back issues as a writer in the 80s would have.
The (few) salaried writers are "exclusive": they can only write for that publisher's books. If their bright idea doesn't fit into an existing character's arc, they can either pretend it does, or pitch it as something new which (if accepted) will be company owned intellectual property. The "best" industry jobs are the ones with the least creative control. Forgive me if I don't believe the best creative minds end up there.
For the last couple of decades, there’s been a particular model to sustainable careers in comic book writing. First you do work at some of the smaller independent publishers to get the attention of the Big Two (DC and Marvel), then you transition into writing for the Big Two and work your way up the ladder to the highest profile book you can muster, and then you use your larger platform from your superhero work to draw folks back in to your independent work, often using the money from those big superhero books to subsidize your own books before they turn a profit. (James Tynion IV on Substack in 2021)
Miniseries/TPBs have serious upsides to those who can't afford to be continuity geeks. It's a graphic-novel sized contract guaranteed to get your name in front of a lot of eyes. It's a low risk gig that can still offer a rare level of arbitrary creative control.
"the main universe is meant to be a collaborative front"
Well...
The first and foremost thing the Marvel or DC universe is "meant" to be is a marketing tool. Creators who care have done beautiful and interesting things with the concept, but the fundamental unit of story in the MarvelDC model is the (copyrighted) character.
It's really the IP that sells. I'm the ultimate example. I came to Marvel with little experience as a writer in the early '70s and replaced Stan Lee on Spider-Man. It didn't hurt the sales. (Gerry Conway to Business Insider in 2021)
Henry Ford couldn't be happier: creative workers swapped out like cogs without disturbing the story-producing machine. A comic is more like a novel than a movie or TV show: a creator can do it solo, if given the space and time. The unique and fun "collaborative" element of superhero comics are a well-executed coping mechanism for decades of exploitative labor practices.
In the above case, Gerry Conway had a single decade to catch up on and was coached by the previous writer(s) directly. The weight of publishing history on individual writers is always growing heavier, TPBs or no.
If TPBs really are are giving creatives the control to screw over the IP for their own short term interests... that's sad from a fannish perspective but from an industry perspective, uh, yeah, screw 'em. If "playing super nice with continuity" was meant to be standard, then deadlines and compensation should represent the work that goes into that.

3 good reasons to pay for RWBY no matter what your stance is
If you hate RT for how the company treat their employees: They're finally going to pay their employees! RWBY has been going on for ten years. I work in business in a leadership/management position, and I have no idea how RT has managed to pay their employees by giving away the thing they make FOR FREE for so long? Support the employees by paying for the show. You are contributing to the ensurity of their job, their salary, and the worth of their hard work, which are all good things.
If you love RWBY: This show won't get made without any people making it, no matter what business owns the IP. Those people need to live, pay rent, eat food, etc. That shit costs money. Also, to make the show they need equipment, electricity, mo-cap shit, software, etc. To be able to keep making RWBY, they have to be able to pay for everything. And, if you're also a Number 1 person: If you hope for RWBY to be indepedent of RT, the buyer/new owner needs it to be profitable for the exact same reasons. So go support the show!
If you hate RWBY: Well, you're here, so you have some investment in it. If RWBY vanishes, you won't have it there to hate anymore. Also, I hope you're okay and have some things you love in your life as well. Take care of yourself.
Personally, I'll be buying Crunchyroll Premium JUST to watch RWBY. I have no other need for it as I rarely ever watch anime these days.
Do I love spending money? No.
Am I actually worried that RWBY will get canceled? No, but this is a business and businesses need profit to pay their employees and they need employees to make the show, so...
Do I want RWBY to succeed and continue for many years to come? Hell yes, and I'll do my part to show it.

This blog is AO3-positive
Friendly reminder:
If you think AO3 is awful and people donating need to die, go to hell, etc. - get the fuck off my Tumblr.
If you think AO3 is doing something with whatever "extra money" you think they have - get the fuck off my Tumblr.
If you think you need to "pay content creators directly" instead of supporting AO3 - get the fuck off my Tumblr.
AO3 exists for a reason. It's an ARCHIVE. It's not here for your political agenda. It's not here to alleviate your icky feelings. It's not here to only host you-approved content. It is here as an ARCHIVE. It is here as a NON-PROFIT. It does not allow things that are illegal in the US. It does not host CP. It hosts words. If you find any actual CP, not written words, please fucking report it.
Fanfic writers are not "content creators". We do not create "content" for you to consume. We do not (or at least legally cannot) make money off of our writing. We cannot use someone else's IP that is not in the public domain to make money. That is illegal. We also do not create things necessarily for your consumption. This is not a capitalist creator/consumer place.
You know what AO3 does with any money that isn't needed to cover their current bills? They use it to invest in their own infrastructure, to pay for professionals to come fix things or build new things, to pay for the lawyers' time when it's needed to defend YOUR constitutional right (according to the US constitution, since it's based in the US) to free speech. They don't make profit off this. No one is getting bonuses, or perks, or (in 99.9% of cases; the .01% have pretty much been already listed above) even a salary/paycheck!
You wanna go back to the bad old days? Fine, stay off AO3. You want to make your own archive where you can enforce your own rules? Feel free. You can even use AO3's existing code, as it's open-source and available to all! You want to make money off of your fanfic? Good fucking luck with that, I hope you can afford lawyers. Or don't mind filing off the serial numbers to publish it as original fic. Because no one noticed that Twilight was bad Harry Potter fic, that 50 Shades was bad Twilight fic, that the Mortal Instruments series was bad Harry Potter fic. Nope, absolutely no one.

Chris Sale, LHP, Braves 8.1 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 11 K
Mark Sale, a seven-time All-Star who once had a string of six straight top-five Cy Young Award finishes, down as an underdog. The Braves took on less than half of his 2024 salary in the offseason trade that brought him to Atlanta, which should be an indication of the uncertainty surrounding him. But Sale proved in 20 starts last year -- the most he’d made in a season since 2019 -- that he still has that swing-and-miss stuff that made him one of the best pitchers in baseball for so many years, tallying 125 strikeouts in 102 2/3 innings. Entering his age-35 season, he’s definitely not what he was, having been put through the wringer physically, but based on his early showings, the stuff is still there. A healthy Sale, even in a partial season, would be an enormous get for the Braves, regardless of the role he ends up playing.

Challenger’s definitely will benefit from a press tour besides the Z factor it’s not an IP like Dune so doesn’t have a fan base. I don’t think anyone is expecting blockbuster numbers but they expect it to do well enough to make a profit and for Luca be his highest grossing movie cause he really has low Box office numbers.Studios and investors can only support so long for the only return to be awards and no profit. I think I read that he got his own funding from Italy for Bones and all and people didn’t take a salary . The budget was only 16 million and it did not cover that. Plus no major awards. All this to say Luca needs this to do well probably more than Z
Yeah, he’s not stupid and he knows that Z has major star power so this is beneficial for him as well, idk I hope Amazon tells us soon if they are gonna delay it or not

All the BJU administrative salaries according to their 990s are about the same. Gary Weier took a little cut in the previous year and so did Steve Pettit. But they are all hovering around the same -- but going up!
