It's been a while since I last thought seriously about Dr*gon A*e (even prior to falling in love with BG3) and I think a big part of that is I'm not as big a fan of the setting and the worldbuilding as I used to be. Like to me it really does feel like BW looked at typical fantasy settings and went "hmm okay but what if there was Catholic-enforced racism and abelism". And like. Cool thought experiment bro. Do we really need three games made by primarily white guys about that.
#dragon age critical#marie speaks#idk if ableism is the best comparison for mage oppression but idk you get my larger point#I've heard that DA was supposedly BW's critical response to settings like Forgotten Realms after making the og BG games#and idk if that's true but I'd be willing to believe that bc that's what a lot of it's world building feels like#“oh u thought the elves where gonna be ethereal and respected? nah they're a haphazard blend of irl oppressed groups”#“oh u thought this fantasy world was gonna have a plethora of interesting and dynamic deities and gods? nah it's just fantasy Catholicism”#“oh u thought people who can use magic would have respected places in society? nah they're locked in jail for being Different”#like I feel like these ideas were kinda cool for one game. An expanded thought experiment#but idk if they were strong enough to sustain an entire franchise#without significantly expanding their pool of writers to get the perspectives of people they're attempting to represent at least#but that's a whole different issue#anyway DA has some legit cool concepts like the Grey Wardens that I will always love#and most of their early character work is still really strong#but for me every time that setting rears it's head problems arise#anyway if you're still a DA fan that's totally fine! I'm very happy for you!#don't let my salty ramblings spoil what resonates with you from these games#I'm just reflecting bc it used to be a huge part of my life especially through like all of highschool#and now it's just. not.

name: 五条悟 Gojo Satoru.
name meaning: the name satoru derives from the japanese verb "to know" or "understand". the kanji used in satoru's name specifically means "enlightenment" (悟).
alias: the strongest, blindfolded idiot/idiot
ethnicity: Japanese
picture/icon you like best of your character: putting two bc i'm torn :p (putting the rest under the cut bc this is p long)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ᴛʜʀᴇᴇ ʜᴇᴀᴅᴄᴀɴᴏɴs ʏᴏᴜ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ɴᴇᴠᴇʀ ᴛᴏʟᴅ ᴀɴʏᴏɴᴇ :
he is a huge sone (fan of girl's generation). in general i imagine he's a huge fan of 2nd gen kpop. i can see him being part of the war between snsd and 2ne1 fans... in modern non-sorcery au he probably has an edgy account where he talks endless shit abt p much any release past 2015 (aside from his faves). yes ik this is goofy but just hear me out and see the vision. his bias is yuri c: // just wanna say when i joke abt this it does not reflect how i feel lmao
i'm not sure if it's ever been addressed why satoru doesn't drink ? but regardless of whatever chatgeget said idgaf, i'm taking canon from him and making my own. anyway i say that satoru doesn't drink because it messes with his six eyes too much... tho i do love the idea that he got wasted someday and it was horrendous. idk it just makes sense. he keeps from it as a precaution lmao
greg claims satoru is a natural genius at everything but i reject that because i think it'd be funny if he's a disaster in the kitchen. actually most household type stuff, i think he'd be horrendously bad at it... cooking is the worst tho. do NOT let gojo into the kitchen he will blow that shit tf up.
ᴛʜʀᴇᴇ ᴛʜɪɴɢs ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴄʜᴀʀᴀᴄᴛᴇʀ ʟɪᴋᴇs ᴅᴏɪɴɢ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇɪʀ ғʀᴇᴇ ᴛɪᴍᴇ :
ik canon says he has no hobbies bc he can do anything but I reject that once more. satoru likes to watch tv... he loves movies, reality tv, and soap operas especially. idk he seems like the kind of guy that looooooves juicy drama
taking the students out into the city, like to eat or sight see or other super fun stuff. satoru doesn't get that much time off, but he likes to use the sundays he does have for this
when he's not doing his work as a sorcerer/teacher or any of the above stuff... he dates around. he's a bit for the streets... nothing ever lasts long, but satoru craves companionship. he usually ends up fucking it up just by being busy, or ghosts because he believes serious romance is just something he can't do
sɪx ᴘᴇᴏᴘʟᴇ ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴄʜᴀʀᴀᴄᴛᴇʀ ʟɪᴋᴇs / ʟᴏᴠᴇs :
everyone obviously,,, though if i have to narrow it down then megumi, suguru, tsumiki, shoko, ijichi, yaga and all of his other old classmates and students. he deeply treasures these ppl in his life, and he takes being the strongest to heart so much bc it means protecting them and/or fostering their growth
ᴛᴡᴏ ᴛʜɪɴɢs ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴄʜᴀʀᴀᴄᴛᴇʀ ʀᴇɢʀᴇᴛs :
not noticing something was wrong with suguru sooner
not having more time with everyone before, ya know... :c
ᴛᴡᴏ ᴘʜᴏʙɪᴀs ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴄʜᴀʀᴀᴄᴛᴇʀ ʜᴀs :
i don't think satoru has like... any legit/proper phobias? i do think he is scared of being hurt deeply tho, like how he felt when suguru defected. he doesn't want to feel that way again so he maintains a bit of distance (or tries to)
staying alone always. he already feels alone but just... lowkey hopes that it won't always be that way (ig he never really realized how much everyone around him loved him ;3;)

hihi, this will be my last question, haha i keep asking you,cuz you're the most experienced in my eyes 😁
so,i want to manifest my life totally(with void),like i want to change everything, okay cool right?
but,i have some worries about my desires, especially the ones that not many people manifests.so, it's birth date, country and nationality (for haters and so on people:judge if you want, but you're white,bc you're assuming 😁)
so,i want to be specific nationality, but i want to be born as, I don't want my old reality,i want to make it like,i never existed in my old life (like parents and other people never knew me nor i existed)
BUT!i want to be born in my new reality!cool, yeah?
but(i'm sorry lol🤣), I don't want to shift, I don't want to shift to any other universes or whatever...i want to be in my 3d,but still with my new family and so on.
what i'm afraid is shifting.i don't want to be anywhere!i'm not against shifting, but i want to separate my life and shifting!
and i know "shifting" is still manifesting, but what i meant is I don't want to be part of multiuniverse or something like that?
i hope you understood me well even when i messed up like that...
it's possible?
I don’t get the huge debate and discomfort surrounding shifting vs manifesting. They’re two sides of the same coin tbh but if it’s so important to you then just intend to not shift if that will make you feel happy. I mean it’s your reality.
But I’m just curious because it makes a lot of people mad when people say shifting and manifesting are the same thing. It really is just a perception and bound to the fact that we have access to any reality at anytime and all our choices reflect that, so why does it make you guys so mad? Just wondering but regardless it’s your reality and your choice wether you shift or not I suppose. Just do what makes you happy and use whatever terminology makes you most comfortable 😁 all that matters is that it’s possible and you can do it

Hello! I read your article a few days ago on twitter and talked myself out of sending you a message. But I saw it again here today and that you were open to feedback. As someone who lived through the scene - I had a few thoughts but I don't want to overstep as I'm a white person - so grain of salt.
But my main concern is that you have a whole section on erasing people of color from their own art but then kind of toss Gabe in there as just an example of someone who walked away from hardcore ideals.
My suggestion is to at least please name Gabe's identities - he's always been vocal about and proud of being from Uruguay/Latino and Jewish.
But he's talked often about feeling like an outsider and using the music scene to combat that. The whole point of Cobra was "rooting for underdogs, taking control of your destiny, taking shots at the establishment, not taking any shit, and not taking yourself too seriously." (taken from his words in the Cobra Starship farewell statement).
Gabe worked really hard to uphold his ideals - Rob Hitt talked in a recent podcast about Gabe making him sing on at least one track during Midtown so he could join a singers union and access health care bc it was only available to vocalists. Gabe did a few podcasts in 2021/2022 leading up to the Midtown reunion that are worth listening to - especially One Life One Chance with Toby Morse (he touches on being an immigrant, growing up feeling different, his views/values from the scene and his roots and the importance of the scene for somewhere to belong) and Punk Rock MBA (for DIY values and reflections on fame and mental health). He really could have his own section bc he was constantly written off as the fun party one when actually was super intentional, intelligent, and living his DIY values trying to bring everyone he can up with him but I'll stop here.
Thanks for sharing the article and writing it. It's really weird to have people analyzing your youth and your experiences but I do want the scene to move forward and get better at being inclusive and respectful so thank you for bringing up the conversation.
-Nik
First of all, thank you for reading and an even bigger thank you for replying with this awesome message!
I am actually a huge Gabe Saporta fan, and I definitely don't want to give off the impression that I'm writing him off as a party boy or Cobra Starship as a substance-less band. Cobra Starship is one of my favorite bands of all time, and I've been getting more into Midtown lately.
There are two big reasons I didn't write more about Gabe, the first is that when I first wrote this I scrapped a whole section on Latin influence on Emo that he was a big part of because I didn't have nearly enough space for it (I had a 2500 word limit that I was well over).
The second reason is a lot more serious and potentially controversial. South and Central America have really complex racial politics that I don't claim to fully understand, and don't translate exactly to modern American interpretations of who is and who isn't white. I don't know Gabe Saporta personally but from what I learned from Wikipedia, both his parents are European Jews who's families fled to Uruguay. This means that (AS FAR AS I KNOW WHICH ISN'T VERY FAR AT ALL) racially, Gabe is an ethnic Jew (both Sephardi and Ashkenazi I think). Jews dip in and out of whiteness in America but as an ethnic Jew myself I don't think its appropriate to group his experiences in the scene with those of people of color.
Gabe's Uruguayan heritage is super important, super influential and super interesting, I do not want it to seem like I'm erasing that. It is something worth talking about and something I will probably write more on. I saw his interview with Punk Rock MBA (fascinating stuff) and I have a whole piece on him and Cobra in the very early stages.
Again thank you so much for your message! Gabe means a ton to me as a Jew in the scene and I promise I don't mean to dismiss him. I will go back and look at my wording in that section to make sure Gabe gets the credit he deserves <3

i'm gonna talk about my personal gripes with academic culture that shapes med students/premeds for a sec.
i am no expert on being one, but any life science student has met or interacted with these people. bc very rarely have i met some 18-21 yr old with full ambition to get into med school and become a physician who DIDNT raise alarm bells for misguided intentions (e.g. actions and accomplishments done purely to buff up their resume and make their application competitive; getting personally offended they did't get an A+ on something and blaming the prof for potentially contributing to them not being accepted into med school). i'm not intimate with the admission process either but knowing vaguely how it works it's easy to recognize that like many other processes it prioritizes saying the right things and surface level communication, hoping for empathy to be taught and internalized later (e.g. admission guides/resources prioritizing how to say the things interviewers want to hear for an ethical dilemma in an interview hoping that that alone is a standard to vouch for a good moral compass).
and this treatment of surface level competency and students needing to dedicate all possible time to knowing what the right answers are to be able to reach their goals (MCAT scores, interview scores, resume bullet points, convincing references to write recommendation letters) leaves little priority to consider the integrity behind the work, which extends to any work or educational deliverable (especially the stuff they deem as low priority; like some highly specific work task deadline or some exam for a "bird course" aka humanities elective they look down on).
i've gotten into research scenes prioritizing ways to increase integrity in academic research -- education on openness and transparency, evaluating and creating standards for practice. i've worked on auditing these practices, for which we published results in an academic journal. i worked alongside a med student and guided him through the audit process. because i was also a student he was very comfortable saying things to the sentiment of "oh there's a lot to be done in a short period of time? easy, we can crunch this out" (read: i'm so used to processing huge amounts of information to give some result/record of accomplishment and this is just another one i'll rush through and get by on). he finished it remarkably quickly afterwards. i did quality control on his work and realized that it was what i suspected, he did it TOO quickly, and it was completely wrong. we were all working remotely, so my supervisor in a one on one meeting told me she realized he did not understand at all what the point of it was or what we intended to get at with our answers. moving forward we just kept him out of the loop and got an additional person to quality control and get a better set of data. the dude still got authorship on the published paper. another thing to buff up the resume right?
is this a full reflection on metrics of "deserving" and on the future conduct of a future doctor? probably not. this could be a separate question of how we determine authorship and division of labour in research as a whole. but this is one part in a whole practice and attitude of valuable vs non valuable work and a question of how much integrity is really needed for success.

could u elaborate on the post about social media making ppl less empathetic? i definitely think ur onto something tbh i'm just curious to know exactly what u mean by that
my feelings on this are A Lot and all over the place so i hope this makes sense but:
It creates a sense of distance that doesn’t really exist. it makes you think that because you’re not saying weird and/or foul shit to someone’s face directly that it’s fine to say whatever, whenever. it allows people to put on these personas that they wouldn’t be able to manage in real life, to make them feel stronger, more in control of other people, brave, confrontational, etc. i’m not against using it as a space to vent in a genuine way, but on here and other places there’s an aspect of performance tacked that is just very embarrassing to me. for example, if you don’t dog people as aggressively IRL then it just comes across as fake and opportunistic rather than someone just expressing their feelings normally. it makes feeling emotions into this thing you can do to get people to praise you for being “real” when what’s happening is the exact opposite.
SM also encourages this mindset of being afraid to say anything different when the majority of your “crowd” is behaving in a way you don’t agree with. people are very quick to break out the problematic word when you don’t do whatever they say or think how they think in some bizarre effort to guilt you into falling in line. and when the word problematic comes into play, you’re supposed to automatically hate/cancel whoever’s on the other end of it like they aren’t an imperfect human being. and i’m not talking about cases when someone has done something extremely awful. i’m talking about times when someone just says some dumb shit or does something dumb that sucks and is disappointing, but ultimately doesn’t make them irredeemable as a person. there’s very little room allowed for understanding when it’s due and, in a weird way, people are punished for trying to be that way. of course, there are people who are overly permissive and will go out of their way to sympathize with the literal scum of the earth, but like. that’s used as an excuse to act like freaks about human error far more often that it should be.
LOL idk i don’t want to seem like i’m being fake deep or ~above it all bc my ass is still here and i’ve been guilty of some of this behavior in the past but SM has a huge empathy problem. some parts of it are reflective of society, especially as it relates to women, people of color, lgbtq identities and all the intersections of those. but there’s some stuff that i’ve never seen anywhere else. so yeah lmfao. i hope some of that makes sense.
