i've said it before and i'll say it again: DAI should be about the war between mages and templars exclusively. scrap Corypheus and all of the Fade-related mumbo jumbo, give me well-established socio-political conflict that's been developped for past 2 games. use Anders as a prominent yet controversial mage leader instead of painting him a villain, hated even by his friends. starting the game with the conclave and making the Inquisitor so easily solve the war was the biggest mistake the devs made with this game.

Not to be dramatic, but becoming a Baldur's Gate fan after a decade of being a Dragon Age fan really feels like escaping an abusive relationship

bioware laying off 20+ senior members, constantly delaying release dates for the past two years, refusing to provide any real in-game footage or trailers at gaming events, a leak showcased more than the company has in 7 years of development like idk how to tell yall this but

My toxic trait is I just want an actual butch lesbian in Dragon Age and at this point I don't care if she's a war criminal.

Anders blowing up one oppressive Church building (the chantry is a very horrible institution like Vatican who likes to burn people alive on stakes) to free his people from slavery: Got demonized and hated a lot
Celene murdered 3000 elves just to prove a point: Got an option to get back with her elven girlfriend

If dragon age writers weren't cowards they'd make Thedas ripe with misandry based on the Chantry's beliefs and Alistair wouldn't be able to ascend to the throne without marrying a woman first 😒
And if you aren't playing a female Cousland specifically you'd NEED Anora...( For the record I think she actually wasn't a good ruler and that adds so much spice to this. Especially if you play as Tabris - an elf who suffered under her rule. )

I’m a Dragon Age fan who’s also mentally disabled and a person of color.
and let me say this;
i need more people to start criticizing the Dragon Age ‘elves are an oppressed race’ allegory.
and i need people to STOP criticizing the Dragon Age ‘mages face institutionalized ableism’ allegory.
the ancient slave-liberating elf deity Solas is a bald white man, while the colonizing slave-owning Tevinter nation is based off of brown people. this should not be okay with you.
meanwhile, people are real recipient of the idea that mages are prone to having ‘weak minds’ that make them criminally violent.
it doesn’t matter if an individual is stronger, or more powerful than you, nothing justifies forced institutionalization based on mental profiling.
it doesn’t matter if a fictional race has a similar written history, making them white-looking (while their oppressors are brown, no less) is whitewashing.

it's a huge missed opportunity not to have vivienne show up in winter palace when you don't recruit her, with up to -20 court approval based on the dialog options chosen (or whether the inquisitor even showed up on her gathering). by all means, she absolutely should have showed up during the negotiations, even if morrigan took her place as celene's advisor. vivienne is still connected to gaspard's father-in-law and the head of the council of herald, she should be there as bastien's representative, if nothing else. she's too important for orlesian politics to just dissappear entirely just bcos the inquisitor didn't want to ally with her, for whatever reason. in this fic i will-

"Half elves can only look like humans" is stupid, pointless and racist considering the indigenous coding of the elves.
It creates a boring world with no diversity and complexity and I refuse to accept it as canon.

It's been a while since I last thought seriously about Dr*gon A*e (even prior to falling in love with BG3) and I think a big part of that is I'm not as big a fan of the setting and the worldbuilding as I used to be. Like to me it really does feel like BW looked at typical fantasy settings and went "hmm okay but what if there was Catholic-enforced racism and abelism". And like. Cool thought experiment bro. Do we really need three games made by primarily white guys about that.
#dragon age critical#marie speaks#idk if ableism is the best comparison for mage oppression but idk you get my larger point#I've heard that DA was supposedly BW's critical response to settings like Forgotten Realms after making the og BG games#and idk if that's true but I'd be willing to believe that bc that's what a lot of it's world building feels like#“oh u thought the elves where gonna be ethereal and respected? nah they're a haphazard blend of irl oppressed groups”#“oh u thought this fantasy world was gonna have a plethora of interesting and dynamic deities and gods? nah it's just fantasy Catholicism”#“oh u thought people who can use magic would have respected places in society? nah they're locked in jail for being Different”#like I feel like these ideas were kinda cool for one game. An expanded thought experiment#but idk if they were strong enough to sustain an entire franchise#without significantly expanding their pool of writers to get the perspectives of people they're attempting to represent at least#but that's a whole different issue#anyway DA has some legit cool concepts like the Grey Wardens that I will always love#and most of their early character work is still really strong#but for me every time that setting rears it's head problems arise#anyway if you're still a DA fan that's totally fine! I'm very happy for you!#don't let my salty ramblings spoil what resonates with you from these games#I'm just reflecting bc it used to be a huge part of my life especially through like all of highschool#and now it's just. not.

Not 100% confident on this take because tbh Cullen isn't a character I've dug deep into and I haven't romanced him yet, but I do wonder if some of the dissatisfaction some people feel about his writing and overall arc comes from a dissonance between the game wanting him to have undergone some real change since DA2 while also needing him to play a certain role as an advisor, e.g. Leliana is the designated pro-mage advisor and somebody has to suggest you go to the templars. (It wouldn't be the only place I feel like that dissonance exists--like it's also a little odd to me that Cullen, a Fereldan with family living not that far from the border, favors Gaspard, the guy who would absolute invade Ferelden again if he thought he could win, but he's the commander and the "blunt instrument" advisor so he has to favor the military guy while Josephine favors the diplomatic empress and Leliana salivates over doing blackmail.) So maybe Cullen ends up being Schrodinger's Templar--he's a templar when the structure of the game requires that somebody be the templar, but then his actual arc is about him not being a templar anymore. Hmm.

i swear the only thing any news or information about dreadwolf inspires in me is absolute antipathy. like, i am actually repulsed. all the love and adoration i had for the series has curdled and rotted away thanks to ea/bioware's stupidity and the firings and the lack of severance packages for the people who made bioware.... bioware.
even the behind the scenes shit aside, just the fact of the constant retcons in the wrong direction (re: oppressed mages fighting for their freedom and right to exist are just as bad as their oppressors!!!!!! uh huh yeah ok jan, then why were they portrayed as sad uwu beans in DAO) and lack of a cohesive narrative.
there was so much promise in DAO that was squandered by trend chasing and bullshit. :/

Bioware: We've hit the alpha development milestone on DA4!
Fans: Cool, can we see a single detail of the game that totally exists?
Bioware: Absolutely not.
