I’ve been thinking far too much lately, about BG3 of course because the hyper fixation is only just starting to wane now after 4 months.
Anyways, I am tired of certain members of the fan community inferring that women players shouldn’t pursue Astarion because he shows a clear preference for men. I don’t disagree that in-game dialogue that I have personally seen re: his past dalliances have shown them to be exclusively male. I am not sure if that was a conscious choice on the part of writers, but if it was, I suspect it has more to do with driving home the canonicity of his identity as a queer character in general than it does saying he’s a gay character that can choose to be with women only if the player forces him to.
It’s funny that nobody raises this issue with Halsin, another enthusiastically pansexual character, and I would bet my life on the reason behind that being that Halsin is your stereotypical burly outwardly masculine character, whereas Astarionis decidedly foppish and more delicate in appearance.
Boiled down it seems like a lot of people think that body hair and a messy hairdo makes a canonically pansexual male character “less gay” than another and therefore a more valid romantic option for women.
I’m not going to get into how there is so much more to Astarion (or Halsin for that matter) than his physicality. But certain types of people (i.e. neckbeards and incels) can’t wrap their head around the fact that a character that moves beyond the borders of their limited, one dimensional concept of masculinity could be enthusiastic about fucking a woman. I’m not excluding people that are members of the homosexual community that might be advocating for the fact that Astarion is clearly gay either. They’re a problem too just in smaller numbers.
I mean this poor, wonderful vampire man, so obviously in need of love, is literally accepting all comers (no pun intended I know Astarion hates puns) and because he’s flamboyant and pretty it’s somehow less believable?
I dunno, I get that people are overprotective of stuff they love and there’s this weird instinct to claim things so your obsession seems somehow more validated or whatever. And I probably would feel stupid having daydreams about gay men wanting to sleep with me (real or fake) if they were explicitly stated to be gay.
Astarion’s pansexuality isn’t implied, it’s confirmed, so don’t piss in my cornflakes and let me enjoy playing out the vampire romance dreams I’ve been harboring since I first read Interview With the Vampire in 1994. Like this is the closest I’ll ever get to realizing my dream of Lestat being real and me getting to make out with him and have him tell me I’m pretty so let me just have it for fuck’s sake.
Interesting side note about Lestat, he is yet another character who shows overwhelming textual evidence of being what some would consider gay (flamboyant, dramatic, into fashion) yet can appreciate and enjoy the beauty of women as well. For whatever reason though folks seem to think women have less of a “claim” over Astarion than Lestat, so whatever.
Tldr: Astarion is a man of prodigious appetites, and sometimes he wants tits and pussy and that’s okay.

They’re both hot, they both want my Tav, so fuck off.

Wyllstravaganza Day 3: Worship
Ao3 link- Ko-Fi Had a lot of fun with this! It's been ages since I wrote Toots... my bird brain baby boy. Cannot play him in bg3 but by the way gang, Aarakocra are bird people. Happy reading! --- Wyll had believed, before Mizora.
Faith was strange in the places the gods walked: sometimes Wyll didn’t understand the way they moved. But they couldn’t be everywhere, couldn’t save everyone. Wyll understood this, even if it weighted on his heart. That was why the gods needed champions. He had once believed he would swear himself when he was older, had fancied himself a paladin. He had flipped through old books and looked for gods the way maidens looked for a debutante gown. Someday, he thought, he would be ready. He would wear white. He would dance.
What is there to believe in, now?
The ruined temple to Selûne, Gale’s loss to Mystra, Astarion’s quiet murmurs about the gods, Lae’zel’s creche, Shadowheart’s wounded hand. It weighs on him, and it weighs, like the horns curling from his head.
What’s happened to him? How far has he fallen? What’s to become of him, when all this is over?
There’s a faint shuffle of feathers behind him, late at camp, and he looks over his shoulder.
The Aarakocra who’d been traveling with them is an odd sort. His name was a sort of whistling that some of the others had somewhat sheepishly been unable to imitate, and he’d assured them that his old crew had called him Toots.
Astarion had insisted on the whistling, to avoid saying that out loud, but to the others it added a sort of levity that suited the little bird-man. He’s only three feet tall, brightly colored, a cleric, always joking or prepared with a kind word or a bit of well-intentioned advice. It was good advice, too, provided you were clear about what you were asking for. He was quick on his feet but rather bad at math.
Wyll realizes, distantly, as he watches toots shuffle around and rearrange his bag, that he’d never asked a question.
He clears his throat, and Toots looks up at him, waiting, black eyes glinting in the firelight in a way that would probably be intimidating were he any other kind of creature.
“I’ve realized I never asked,” He says. “Who’s your patron?”
“Oh,” Toots chirps, “Umberlee.”
Wyll stares at him, waiting for him to laugh. He doesn’t.
“The....” Wyll swallows Umberlee’s usual epithet, and instead says, “The queen of the depths?”
“That’s right,” Toots says.
Wyll waits for him to elaborate. He doesn’t, seeming entirely serene.
“...How?” Wyll manages. As far as he’d seen of their cleric, he was rather benevolent. He’d gotten along well with Gale and Halsin, talked of nature, rescued the people he could, had never been excessively cruel, spared who he could. A chaotic evil deity seemed a poor fit.
“Oh, no choice, really,” Toots says, and this time he does elaborate when Wyll looks at him in bafflement, “I was a sailor. A pirate, really. Worshiping Umberlee is like... paying your dues. And you want to pay your dues to the bitch who’ll break your kneecaps if you don’t, not to the nice guy with the beard asking for bread. There are other gods at sea, certainly, other gods of travelers. But the storms will come, and when they do, you want it to be with you and not against you.”
“How do you...stand it?” he asks, “I find it hard to tolerate Mizora, and I hardly... worship her. We have a contract.”
“You cannot make a contract with the sea,” Toots says, mild. “I think because the gods walk and talk people like to pretend they’re human, that they can be reasoned with as humans are. Swearing to a god of righteousness would demand you run your own child through, if it would save more lives, to tell the truth even if you’ll die for it. Many people can live like that, and I admire them, truly. I can’t. I don’t think you could either.”
Wyll considers that, grappling with it, but before he can think it through Toots begins to speak again, elaborating like he’s lifting a mirror to show Wyll his own reflection.
“Chaos,” He says, “Is a cause unto itself. There are no rules that suit every single situation. Absolutes will never be truly just. You and I, we have gone about things in a way that others would condemn wholeheartedly. Opened ourselves to evil in order to save lives. My crew is alive, out there, somewhere. Because of Umberlee. You’ve saved lives because of Mizora. What good is worship for its own sake?”
“...an odd position, from a cleric,” Wyll says, though he can’t help but agree.
“This is the world we live in,” Toots says, spreading his hands. “We ask both what we can do for the gods and what they can do for us. Sometimes the happy few find their god a companion for the road ahead, walking with them because they’re following the same path. The rest of us, well, we need things. We’re selfish and desperate. We would do anything to protect what’s important to us. We know we walk our road alone, and we know that the storms will come and go.”
What had Wyll wanted, when he was young? A companion, for the road ahead, as Toots had said?
No. He’d wanted a destination.
“I think,” Wyll says, slowly, “that when I was young, I wanted a patron the way a sailor wants a lighthouse.”
Toots makes a sort of cooing noise, almost a laugh, approving.
“We’re all in dire need of a lighthouse,” he says. “Perhaps you’ll find one.”
“...What if it’s too late?” Wyll asks, looking at the fire and not at Toots, feeling the weight of his horns on his head, the warmth and the light splashing across him reminding hm of the burning he felt as his soul was dragged through the hells.
“You’re alive,” Toots says, amused, “The world is still here. It will be here in the morning. It often feels too late for those awake too late at night.”
Wyll huffs, feeling chastised, but Toots lets out a little cooing laugh again.
“You’re hardly inclined to pessimism,” he says, “you’re just tired.”
Wyll is tired. He’s felt as though he had to be... the blade of frontiers. Every moment of this adventure. When he’d traveled alone, he had moments with no one around for miles of his camp, only the faint call of the birds for company, the clicking and fluttering of bugs. He feels better, having let that pride slip a moment, like he doesn’t have his rapier in his hand and his guard up.
“You’re rather disarming,” he says, a touch amused, “Especially for someone who just admitted to being the cleric of a goddess almost more fearsome than shar.”
“We aren’t at sea right now,” Toots says, shrugging. “You have nothing to fear from Umberlee.”
“But if we end up at sea, the tempest will pass us over?” “Probably,” Toots says, casual about it.
“I envy your ease, friend.”
“What else is there?” Toots asks. “Well, I suppose I could do what you’re doing, keep myself awake wondering what else I could have done differently, going in circles when I remember I don’t regret anything. You didn’t kill Karlach. Couldn’t have, you great big softie.”
“Me?” Wyll says, almost indignant, “you are roughly the size and texture of a pillow.” “Sleep on me, then,” Toots says, and plops down on the ground next to the fire, his fluffy stomach up, flopping back with his wings spread. “Come on.”
Wyll opens his mouth to protest and then senses that this is an argument he will not win. And he does look soft.
He sighs, carefully arranging himself on his back so he can tip his head back against toots without poking anything with his horns, and toots curls around him. “Rest,” he says, “lay down your anchor. Somewhere in the future, far from here, is a lighthouse.”
“So wise,” Wyll says, sleepily, “yet you called the Absolute the Abyss this morning.” “Easy mistake.”
Toots covers Wyll’s eyes with a wing and Wyll finds himself falling into the darkness, into soft black dreams of calm water in harbor, a ship watched over by a lighthouse.

JERMA 🤝🤝 you should watch him, he’s very much a cryptid. Thank for you the ask goober, sorry it took so long to follow this one up
I am a massive Trek fan (albeit not as much as SW - that’s my special interest after all). Which anyone who decided to torture themself by lurking my toyhouse will know all too well, Qianna especially is my baby, and I write for her religiously. Shes the main flagship oc aside from Jed :)

I’ve been playing a LOT of BG3 as well, and it’s truly an incredible game, I like to mod my experience to the 9’s so that I can play as custom races and have cute outfits and all that jazz. (I’m in love with all of the comps)
I’m also playing HSR, and I formally was really into Genshin, though I prefer HSR as of late especially with the newest updates >:)
And then there’s just a whole bunch of other interests I’ve got. A whole bunch of anime mostly, JJBA, Soul Eater, Death Note, JJK, TBHK and of course, Haikyuu. If only because a certain someone 👇🏻happens to be my all time favorite comfort character (against my will. idk this happened) LMAOOO

Uuhhh so look, in regards to the new patch of Baldur’s Gate 3 coming out. To me, it’s a red flag that it’s 21GB and the main marketing thing they’re going with is kissing scenes. For context, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is like 43GBs and that’s a big ass game. A patch of this size shouldn’t have romance scenes be the selling point, cinematics data or not. I’ve been super forgiving and tolerant of Larian because I do respect them, I do like them. I loved Divinity: Original Sin 2 in high school. But this shit is absurd. The epilogue shit was sweet or whatever but ima be real, it really wasn’t needed when a lot of BG3 players aren’t even through with the game yet. It really could’ve waited. BG3 needs a lot more than just a fan service epilogue
Mf, fuck the forehead kiss scenes, where is the upper city of Baldur’s Gate? Will we finally have late game scenes be voice acted? There’s so much issues with BG3, like real issues that other cRPG devs couldn’t get away with, but Larian is focusing on genitalia physics. Shit that isn’t at all important.
It’s pretty obvious that the whole “Baldur’s Gate 3 came out the box complete” praise isn’t true because shit like the difficulty modes and everything else should’ve been there from the start. Like they were in Pathfinder.
I like the game, but these patches and their lallygagging is getting played tf out. It’d be one thing if they were locked in, fixing this shit, but their focusing on bullshit romance scenes and changing characters to be more palatable when they need to be filling out and fixing their game. Say what you want about Owlcat, but they get busy with their games. They didn’t fuck around with adding romance scenes and stupid physics that mfs not even gon care about fr, they get shit done.
Larian, y’all need to get shit done and stop acting like this shit a game. Romance scenes aren’t important. Mfs pressuring you to give a companion more kiss scenes isn’t important. Stupid ass lil gimmicky dick and ball physics aren’t important. BG3 has some real problems that need to be fixed, tick tock mfs too because this shit will only be glossed over for so long.
There’s a reason why Owlcat gets a pass for its buggy games in the community, it’s because they don’t spend months giving Daeran 5 hours of romance scenes. They get their games fleshed out and fixed up quick. Owlcat would NEVER move like this with Pathfinder.
Best believe that the hyper focus on fan service and romance shit is going to bite Larian soon if they don’t pull it together soon. I dunno what the fuck they’re doing, but Larian wasn’t moving like this when BG3 was in Early Access, but now they’re just losing the plot. Larian, fuck off with the bullshit fan service and fix shit—add shit.

I was gonna talk about this earlier today but I was busy so lemme just touch upon it briefly now. It's so genuinely homophobic and fucked up of what I assume is female reader to come here and whine about queer man writing fanfics and self inserts with their favourite characters??? Like they're allowed to do it but we aren't?? Raging homophobia????
I think I'm especially touchy about this cause lately I've been seeing so many fem authors and artists and bot makers just straight up erase or ignore queer identity of queer male characters?? Bg3 fandom is especially awful at this but I saw it happen for few other (some of them canonically gay!!) characters. And I know some straight men are guilty of doing the same thing for queer female characters and I really do feel for like most of girls and normal people in fandoms, it's just people like this that set me off.
And it really is cishet men and women (not everyone ofc, just rude and vocal minority) who are out here complaining about queer people writing queer fanfics. Fandom spaces were always carried by queer people and to see someone come to male reader blog and complain about male reader content when we're like...not even 10% of the fandom is seriously pissing me off. 😒😒
ANYWAYS- sorry for the rant, I saw post few days ago about this that pissed me off on twitter and I've been holding grudge for a while. In good news, I'm supposed to get new laptop soon! I'll finally be able to properly play games and do my graphic design 😭
-🔮
I just have a hard time understanding why we aren’t allowed to write fics like I’d get it if a fem reader was like it’s uncomfortable that u as a male insert fic writer write wlw fics but what in gods name gives a fem aligned person the right to say something about mlm fics 4?:?3
Oh I’ve seen it too!! They’ll take a queer character and basically turn them straight in fics or in bots it’s crazy I think I even talked about this a while ago bc once again what the hell?3?3?3
Yeah and I don’t even understand this anger?? how are fem readers angered that I’m simply writing fics?😭 I’d get it if the day prior I was like fuck fem aligned readers and went to bed but yesterday I posted a piss fic for baby digger like why are you in my ask calling me a predator?
Also don’t apologize sugar!! It’s good we discuss this bc if anything I think we brush it under the rug a lot instead of like discussing that this is ragging homophobia and ppl should be held accountable
Also I’m so happy for you sugar!! What games do you plan to play?🫶🏻

4, 16 and 33 for the artists ask game
This is a long post so be warned kdjcjdkdjd vvv
4. A piece you wish got more love
Probably most of my content that isn’t TF related! Would love more interactions on my OC/Sona and other fandom content, especially my BG3 art right now, but I also understand as someone who’s interest based why that stuff usually doesn’t perform well djxndjdj
A lot of people follow an artist for one particular thing and when they don’t make that particular thing, people usually aren’t that interested unless you followed an artist for their style or something (is my assumption anyways djdjdjdj)
Some examples here below vvv (all of which you can find if you search my art tag: jaxsart on my profile!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I will say the non TF content that I think was really well received was my Spidersona <3 I got a wonderful fanart piece for her and I’m so happy people loved her design cause I was also really proud and happy with how she turned out. Still planning to make more content for her in the future! She’s pictured below here vvv

16. How do you motivate yourself to draw?
I’m honestly still figuring that one out lol
I usually only draw when I want to since I’m not an artist who relies on commissions or the like to keep myself afloat. But I’ve also been hitting an art funk as of late and while I do want to draw, it’s been really hard to draw cause of the skill I want to incorporate in my drawings now. It either takes me longer or I end up hating the process because of how long it takes or because of how hard it is. So that effects my motivation heavily because all the cons stated above is what makes me not want to draw 😅
I’m currently trying to find a balance of what makes me happy while drawing and how to make my art look good to myself again since I’ve been hating it so much. I’ve been looking into different techniques, learning more in depth lighting and shading techniques and need to do more anatomy studies as that’s getting rusty again and I’ve been getting lazy cjxndjdj
All in all, I still draw when I want to, but I think the big motivating factor is wanting to see the end product. I just want to be able to finish the WIPS I have and the visions I see in my head and get them out into the world so others can see them too. I wanna say that I finally made that thing or actually did it!! That’s probably my biggest motivating factor right now. But we’re still figuring it out 😊
33. Have you taken a lot of art classes?
I took a handful as a kid, got to play with pastels once, made clay art, learned photoshop, learned to paint, a whole bunch of stuff! My parents have always been very supportive of my art and really helped foster a lot of that so I went to plenty of classes through out my childhood and teen years.
When I was in college, the last classes I took were all for my bachelors (which I dropped out of later on cjcjdjfj). I think the most helpful one was my life drawing class though. I’m gonna do one of those stereotypical artist things where I *highly* recommend you take a life drawing class if you want to learn more about anatomy or different techniques to implement into your art. They’re so good for growing your skill massively in a short period of time. My first drawings we did for gesture drawing look horrid compared to my later studies!
Always always always take a life drawing class if you’re able!
Thank you for the asks! <3

>:3 Alright Frank, my turn. Please share your bg3 brain worms (tadpoles). Favorite character(s)? Preferred companions? Do you have a consistent party? If not, how do you choose your members at any given time? I am very curious if it’s the latter because as I mentioned, I don’t really ever switch it up.
you said in the tags of your answer to write as many paragraphs as my feelings can fill… and well… it’s a lot haha :)
i love all the characters so much! they're all so unique, interesting, and charming in their own way. i'm only in act 2 myself (about to finish it though i think) so i haven't gotten to see everyone's full stories yet. narrowing down a favorite is so hard! i change up my party every once in a while, but consistently i still always bring wyll or shadowheart so I guess they would be my favorites!
i love wyll so much, im always a sucker for characters who are able to stay postive and optimistic even through the worst of times. I also love characters (especially in fantasy) who are primed to be the main character either from their backstories or narratively (alistair in dragon age and aragorn in lord of the rings are other examples); wyll, who is a monster hunter but is first and foremost a protector of the people, (there are other details about him that I wont spoil for you that also lend to this) has all the makings of a classic fantasy protagonist, but he never expresses the desire to be the leader (i guess, unless the player plays as him haha) or to get any recognition for helping cure the tadpoles. other possibly-spoilery tid-bits about him that break away from or invert fantasy character archtypes help to really round out his character in an interesting way.
I loved shadowheart pretty much instantly (shadowheart and lae’zel being the first two companions you meet is everything, i love them both and their dynamic so much) shadowheart is a bit of a mystery, even to herself, which is fascinating to me. I find her whole story, so far, really interesting, and I’m excited to see where it goes and what else is learned about her through the rest of the game. i love characters who are so dedicated to one goal to the point that it’s all that matters to them and it’s all they are, but then the story challenges their dedication or pulls them from it for a larger cause.
i switch up my party every once in a while, but its usually just to swap out characters for quests that are relevant to them or that i think will prompt dialogue or approval from them. i think my game is a bit bugged, because i didn't even realize there was party banter until very late into act 1 (also just might be  because i fast travel a lot) so i've been switching out characters more to see what conversations they can have.
my go-to parties in act 1 were wyll, shadowheart, and lae’zel or wyll, karlach, and lae’zel (this was mostly because of combat game play, karlach and lae’zel with their extra attack or shadowheart as an extra healer was so helpful when I was still trying to learn the combat system).
in act 2 my go to party is wyll, shadowheart, and karlach, or wyll, shadowheart, and halsin depending on if im just exploring/doing side-quests or if i know I’ll run into heavy combat. karlach regularly one-shots enemies with 30+ hp and having her extra attack is the only way i get through combat most of the time (even on the easiest difficulty, combat continues to kick my ass).
when I reach act 3, I plan on mixing up my party more, depending on what’s in store for act 3 (I have surprisingly not been spoiled on anything that happens in act 3).
combat is the main reason why i don’t switch up my parties more since i get used to having certain spells or abilities. on my second play through (which I’ve already started planning even though im not close to being done with my first lol) i plan on trying to mix up my groups more to get more banter and to spend time with other characters I haven’t had much chance to. I rarely take gale or astarion with me (unless there is a relevant quest) but only because of combat, i feel like other characters have more useful abilities then they do. which is a shame because i like them both a lot, and want to get to know them better. my tav is a cleric, so that also factors in to party make-up. gale’s party banter is always bugged for me as well which is a bummer, the captions will pop-up but his voice lines never play.
one thing i like so much about the characters is that they all have interesting interpersonal dynamics. it really only comes up in banter and the occasional camp conversation but its enough to make it feel like they're all actually interacting in camp. whether or not they fully get along, they still all seem to care about each other which i love! its the friend group you'd never expect (most of who would probably not get along or get the chance to interact if the circumstances were different) but they all end up being close in some way or another. shadowheart and lae'zel's dynamic is especially a favorite of mine, i always love characters who don't get along on the surface but are actually "no one's allowed to be mean to them except for me". shadowheart and astarion are a bit like this too, with each other, and astarion with the rest of the companions as well. another one of my favorite party dynamics is wyll, shadowheart, and astarion; three people I wouldn’t have expected to really get along but the first time i had them all in my party I triggered like three conversations in a row where they were flirting with each other (my favorite of their banters is astarion saying he’d drink from wyll if he could chose anyone in camp after shadowheart asks him and then her sounding disappointed that he didn’t pick her. in my play through shadowheart then asked astarion if he was single less than a minute later lol).
my favorite character dynamics are:
wyll and karlach
wyll, astarion, and shadowheart
shadowheart and lae’zel

Hi, I think your writing is really nice, especially ace!tav, and I was really happy seeing that you opened up assigning shipping (or whatever it’s called I forgot). I think you’d go really well with Gale considering you like writing and history, I think your personalities would go well together.
As for myself I’d like to be shipped with a male bg3 character. I’m trans (ftm) and gay. I’m on the shorter side about 5’3. Something people usually point out about me is that I have very blue eyes. I’m usually very quiet when I’m not around people I know but when with people I’m comfortable with I can be really loud. Because of my autism I’m kind of blunt and can accidentally be mean sometimes. I also have trouble picking up on social cues. I have a lot of hobbies including ice hockey, drawing, painting, writing, and playing instruments. Basically anything I feel like doing I’ll learn it. I’ve been described as a human heater because I’m constantly warm no matter what the temperature is and am prone to overheating. A lot of the time I don’t really like being touched unless especially without warning and hate loud sounds (autism again lol).
If you don’t want to do this or if slots are filled up that’s totally understandable. Thanks for taking requests and writing some really good fics.
I ship you with Dammon
Tumblr media
My sweet summer child would adore you. He’d be more than patient in understanding your boundaries, careful never to cross them or push you too far. On the other hand, he wouldn’t be afraid to call out when you’ve pushed against his. He’d be more than supportive of your hobbies and excited to see the end result of your creativity. You obviously wouldn’t be able to spend time with him at the forge, but late nights cuddling against your heat creates the same effect.
Tumblr media
I do love a man who expresses interest in my interests.

Baldur’s Gate 3
10/10
Spoiler free
Let me tell you a story.
In 2015 I got accepted to a Master’s program at Northeastern and for the first time in my life I was living in my own (room in an) apartment.  The school work for the Master’s was pretty easy and my job equally so, so I was left with a bunch of free time.  I proceeded to fill that free time by starting playing Dungeons and Dragons, since the game looked fun and my nerdy ass sister had been talking it up.  I went to my college’s tabletop club, gave my pitch for a game I wanted to run (yes, I ran a game of D&D before I had ever played in one. It was... a decision.), joined another game that sounded interesting, and then posted a facebook comment that hey, that Star Wars tabletop game you were running sure sounded like fun, Shawn.
And since then I’ve been hooked.
At some time in the past two years, D&D (or tabletop roleplaying in general) became my favorite game, supplanting Magic the Gathering.  I can’t tell you the exact date, but I know this because when I was brainstorming for writing this earlier today, I realized that that was the case.
The reasons for this are pretty numerous, and a lot of it falls on how MtG has gone really downhill of late, but I want to focus on the positives here, and my primary love of D&D is how you are able to have as much fun as you are able to.  You’re engaging in a collaborative story where the goal is to ensure that you and 3-6 other people all are enjoying yourselves.  It’s very intimate in a way that few things are and even when the story might be meh or you might be off your game on a particular day, there’s always that feeling that other people are enjoying themselves and that alone makes your day better.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is that in a video game.
When the trailers first came out, I found the game compelling but was turned off by it going into early access since I was interested in the main story and getting through that so at the time, I was kinda meh on the whole thing.  When I heard it was actually coming out I was pretty interested and I played a bit of the early access, finding it enjoyable but again, wanting more, wanting the long quest with a solid end in sight.  I wanted to build a story, not just play a turn based game.  Fortunately, I didn’t have to wait too long.  One of my best friends got me the game, and we started playing it, ready to dive into the world together.
Immediately, I was hooked, because the base mechanics of D&D are very fun and the story was engaging.  Getting to know the characters, solving quests, and obviously being annoying to my buddy brought just so much joy.  We went out of our ways to ensure that our respective romances went well, and listened to each other, with me accepting that his vampire boyfriend was ok and him accepting my gith girlfriend was a zealot and not to be trusted.  It was an experience that we made together to ensure we were both having a good time.
I’m not sure that the experience would have been the same if I had played it singleplayer my first time through, but there is still a substantial amount of that collaborative storytelling in the game even if you are the only human.  You need to ensure that your NPC companions are happy if you want to romance them, or if you just want to see some cool sequences.  There’s a lot of ways that you can run into quests and more often than not, “kill everything that moves” is unlikely to get you what you want.
Ok so I’ve gone into what the game is, but why is it good to play as, ya know, a video game?  Because I can just run a D&D game (please don’t ask me to I’ll say yes and I don’t have the time), why should I install this program?
BG3 streamlines a lot of annoyances that can pop up in normal D&D.  Obviously, you don’t need a DM, and the “DM” of the game is telling a good story with good narration and well-acted NPCs and everything people always want from a good D&D session.  It’s not going to replace D&D completely since it’s only one story, but it’s a damn good story.
The gameplay is fun and engaging.  It solves a lot of problems with baseline D&D mechanics by streamlining them, making them less relevant, fixing them for use in a video game, and just overall making the best form of D&D possible.  There’s a few spots where I’m like “ok why did you do this instead of what D&D already had” but those were few and far between.  The gameplay is a solid turn-based RPG with a plethora of options, with combat taking place in varied locales where lines of sight, high ground, and all sorts of other conditions need to be taken into account to win.  Or you can just shoot lighting at everyone, that normally does the trick.
The story, as mentioned, is engaging and gripping.  There are narrative setups and payoffs, characters from hour 2 come back in hour 42, your actions actually matter.  It’s refreshing to know that I won the game thanks to a series of decisions I made from the first town that I had to keep reiterating across all three acts.  I wasn’t able to just go through the game with my brain off, I had to think about my actions and what consequences they would have for every character, myself included.
There are three difficulty levels.  I played on the Balanced difficulty and it was reasonably challenging at parts and laughably easy at others, but I have been optimizing D&D characters for 8 years straight now, so... that tracks.  But I know a lot of people think the game is super hard and others think it’s too easy, so *shrugs*.  Difficulty isn’t really a selling point for me on games, all I can say is you can customize your playthrough at least a bit.
I finished the game last night.  It took me probably 60 hours.  I started a new playthrough 4 hours ago.
This game is great.

I saw in your stick of truth art you said you play baldurs gate? Im interested to know if you have any south park crossover ideas?
I have been playing lately!! well, not really 😅 a friend from d&d has been streaming it to me but once I have my own gaming PC I will be buying and playing it on my own a lot 😏 but since i can’t exactly access it on my own i don’t know the whole game’s plot so no spoilers please!! however i will say……. wyll my beloved 🥺
(putting further ideas below the cut in case anyone else wants to play but can’t and doesn’t want any spoilers at all!)
speaking of Wyll, i do definitely get Gregory vibes from him. like, the fact that he’s a runaway noble who was forced to run bc he sacrificed himself (or at least his soul via a pact)…. big martyr vibes. and now he just goes around helping the downtrodden for no reason other than that it’s the right thing to do?? ABSOLUTELY Gregory. but i will say that the way Gale talks is more Gregory’s vibe.
Christophe….. idk honestly. i will say I’ve seen that one foreign kids in bg3 crossover thing that has Christophe as Shadowheart and i think that is pretty much the MOST wrong choice lol. i know she has trauma with wolves and Christophe has trauma with guard dogs but that’s where the similarities end. Shadowheart’s a cleric. her whole thing about devotion to a goddess. Christophe’s arguably biggest defining character trait is his hatred for God. if i had to pick a main companion person to align Christophe with it’d maybe be Karlach..? but idk. maybe he’s not meant to be in a bg3 AU.
for general SPxbg3 and not just my two main SP boys tho, I really vibe with the idea of Stan as Halsin… strong, kind, loves animals 🥰 kind of the perfect fit! also the fact that he’s a bear and finn has all the art with post covid Stan as a big ol bear. for Kyle, my heart wants to say Astarion since i love vamp Kyle and for style/halstarion reasons BUT Kyle is not as mean spirited as Astarion is at first ofc so i think he’s sort of similar to Gale..? well meaning but comes off as kind of pretentious, bad luck in romance, and kind of a nerd.
Kenny is Karlach, no doubt about it. loves to party and dance, excellent vibes, but cursed in ways that involve destruction of their bodies. circling back to Astarion, honestly i think this could be Craig! i mean, Damien fits really well too but i’m trying to think of more major characters for this theoretically crossover lol. Wendy seems like an obvious choice for Shadowheart visually at least, but i think she’s a bit more like Wyll! assuming that it’s not Gregory haha. they both care deeply about issues of justice and are willing to fight for what’s right. Shadowheart then i feel could be Bebe… both perfectly bitchy but also badass. and tell me Bebe wouldn’t be the type to cut and dye her hair after a dramatic moment!!
then there’s Lae’zel who honestly I’m a bit stuck on 😅 to be frank she’s my least favorite character so far. the tav my friend and i have is a cleric of lathander who believed that the guardian in the prism was his god (before learning The Truth lmao) so the combination of the githyanki occupying the temple of Lathander and wanting to kill the guardian made me not like her much. but maybe she could be Red bc Red is my favorite SP girl so that will help endear her to me 🥰
i know nothing about Minthara bc my friend loves Halsin so we killed Minthara basically the moment we met her. doesn’t help that she’s a drow and personally as a D&D player I hate dealing with drow. come back to me about her when i play on my own and don’t kill her straight away.
