This is absolutely nothing to do with the Netflix show I haven’t even watched that thing but I’m once again thinking about Sokka and Sokkas Master again and going insane.

Especially with how Sokka was never supposed to be a warrior. Like fundamentally he’s just not built for that kind of life. He was born into war and has been basically been told and trained to believe that one day he is going to die for his tribe and especially for his sister and that’s his destiny and he’s like okay that’s my job that’s what I do and everyone in the tribe knows this and sees this as my role as I am the only man left. (I sincerely doubt a bunch of woman and old people were actually looking at this kid as the last warrior seriously until he went to fight the fire nation BY HIMSELF but that’s not the point, the point is he was doing it)

But but the thing about Sokka is he’s not a fighter, he’s a scholar to his core. He doesn’t win hand to hand against Zuko but he does get a hit in with his boomerang that takes an insane amount of math to do perfectly and even though he loses the fight we realise already that Sokka is coming at this war from a different angle that anyone else is.

Like Sokka knows when he joins Aang he doesn’t have as much to bring to the team, he basically assigns himself the role of provider and bodyguard and is now willing to die for both of them because they are two of the most important people in the world and he could have been cynical the entire time. He was prepared to be cynical. Until he goes to Kyoshi gets his shit rocked by a girl and is like oh damn there’s different ways to go about fighting and war and I actually don’t know a lot of it can you super pretty warrior lady teach me your ways and from that moment on Sokka becomes a student.

He gets the mark of the wise with Bato, he figures out how to get Katara on that prison ship and that the fortune teller is a hoax and gets the water bending scroll all through thinking things through not fighting them head on. He invents the fricken war ballon and it’s so clear that all his thinking is now coming at things from an angle no one expects which is so perfect for this war in particular considering it’s been basically a slow tug of war between the Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation for decades. He’s looking at these things and he’s like hey I’m not a bender but I do know how benders think and how a lot of people think because I’m trying to figure out how the world works. Like by the time he gets to North he isn’t as great with the weapons because again HES NOT A FIGHTER AT HEART but he is a thinker and he points out all the holes in the Norths strategy with full confidence.

Like in book 2 all his thoughts are about winning and out thinking the enemy. He learns about the library and gets so genuine excited about it but he can’t be a true nerd cause of his responsibilities but he basically plans a way to win the war, learns haikus, try’s art, gets into wrestling and learns so much about other cultures and skills he’s always thinking and winning and no longer doing things on impulse.

But of course he still feels insecure about that and doesn’t see his brain as his true weapon because he was supposed to be the warrior. That’s his role.

So he goes to Piandao who sees all of that and sees how Sokka is so so smart and eager to learn and think in ways that no one expects and he nurtures that. He teaches him art and calligraphy and gives him a Jian! He gives Sokka a Jian "The Gentleman of Weapons" not Dao even though Dao are made for soilders and Jian are for scholars, nobels and people who have time for proper sword craft. (Not to mention the fact they are primarily used for Tai Chi which is also the base for water bending which is just a detail I love). Like the Jian is a sword for scholars it’s for scholars!!!

Sokkas a thinker not a fighter and that’s so amazing to me.

Like he starts as the boy that took on a fire nation ship by himself then ends the series as the guy who’s strategies won the war, a trusted advisor for basically anyone of importance because they know he’s smart and are willing to listen to his ideas and with such a happy future for him to grow without the weight of having to be a fighter weighing him down cause that’s not who he’s supposed to be.

In a recent meta on Aang sparing Ozai I mentioned Aang's need to humble himself before he meets the lion turtle. (Funnily enough, I noted a lack of foreshadowing, which I might disprove now). I cited Master Piandao only taught Sokka once he'd humbled himself in Sokka's Master, as an example of this being a recurring theme in the show.

In that very same episode, images of lion turtles can be seen in the background.

Sokka humbles himself, and that pleased the person with lion turtle imagery. And after Aang humbles himself, the lion turtle is pleased too.

Obsessing over the idea of zukka kissing under the mistletoe and upset that I can’t find any fics with it >:

Anyways, thinking about sokka and Zuko visiting their shared friend and parental figure Piandao over the holidays. Little do they know, Piandao has seen these two idiots pine over each other for too long and he’s sick of it, so he strategically plants mistletoes around his estate in the doorways they are most likely to bump into each other under, hoping they’ll finally sort things out during their stay.

(it totally works, but he begins to regret everything after walking in on them making out under said mistletoe on multiple occasions)

I know, I know, it took a while. In my defense, a lot of shit happened. Whatever. This thing is 19.2k words, and is the last interlude of Book 1, so I hope you enjoy! Also, this means we'll be doing another interlude poll soon, so be prepared for that with either chapter 38 or 39, I'm sure.

The notes include a vague explanation as to my whereabouts, and then me rambling for a hot sec about the way Caldera works in this story.

When Piandao and Fat spoon, Piandao is often big spoon. It’s not out of strength or being the master of the home, no not at all. It’s a security thing, and Fat learns this when he hears Piandao mutter in his sleep, replaying the day his parents left him. Rarely does Piandao become emotional about it; while in sleep, those repressed emotions bubble to the surface.

But when Fat does insist that he be big spoon, it always ends up with Piandao rolling over at some point, and Fat wakes up with Piandao’s face smushed into his collarbone - it’s the only time the swordsman snores, deep in sleep, and Fat takes great pride in that as he holds his partner.

Fat knows full well Piandao’s history - how he was left at an orphanage for not being a Firebender; for not being good enough for his parents. It’s why Piandao spoons Fat so tightly; but it’s also why Fat insists he spoon once in a while, so Piandao knows that he doesn’t have to hold on; that Fat can reassure him he’s not going anywhere; and if he was, it would only be with Piandao in his arms. So when he wakes up with Piandao’s beard scraping his chest and the elusive sound of his snoring, he just makes sure he’s got enough covering from the blankets and holds him tight.

culture tips for writing asian settings: calligraphy (pt i)

i love chinese calligraphy, to me it is just so gorgeous and i've dedicated a few scenes of my own fics to it, so here are just a few quick 'n' dirty calligraphy tips:

the calligraphy scene in sokka's master (illustrated by korean animators!) is a pretty good depiction tbh. you write using a brush (the brushes can be hung up on a stand too)—it can be jarring to see fics mention quills or parchment. one excellent detail from the show is that sokka, who seems left-handed, has to write with his right hand—the left hand holds the sleeve out of the way. the ink is not liquid/bottled, but is in a solid stick form and has to be ground on an inkstone mixed with water

traditionally, chinese text is written downwards, and goes from right to left across the page.

as with any other form of calligraphy, chinese calligraphy emphasises beauty of form over legibility—in the same way you wouldn't really consider times new roman font 'calligraphy'. there are different types of script in chinese, and for someone like piandao to master them is a reflection of his education and gentility. the semi-cursive below i see quite commonly in calligraphy:

then you might have something like the cursive below is quite technical but seriously hard to read

contrast that with something like this seal script, harking back to an older era of chinese script:

any calligrapher worth their salt will be putting their stamp on the work, quite literally! name seals, also called "chops", are carved out of stone; ink it up with cinnabar paste and stamp it onto your artwork to get that iconic red signature. (i got one made a couple of years ago and there's a trick to stamping: breathe on the stamp surface after dipping in the paste to warm up the pigment, and when stamping put some circular pressure on the stone to get the print to come out evenly)

Do you have any really specific and/or personal Zukka headcanons that you’d be okay with sharing? I eat up every hc you put into your drawings like they’re candy, I was wondering if you had any others :D :D

OH boii i sure have,,, nothing coherent is coming to mind atm so ill just expose my Extensive backstories of zukka bethrotal armbands that idk if i will find a way to sneak into art.

sokka’s armband for zuko is forged back at Piandao’s mansion, and it's one of the most fine stunning pieces of jewelry ever crafted. it’s not the usual southern ivory but metal, more similar to the armbands worn as an accessory in the fire nation. it’s made of intertwining bands of gold and black meteor metal, with patterns of waves and dragon scales that seem to ripple and move when the light catches on them just right. and the pendant is a traditional blue stone from the swt.

There are no particular engagement gifts traditions in the fn, so zuko goes on a deep dive into southern water tribe ones, asking sokka’s family and friends about jewelry making and learning to engrave over the course of several trips to the swt. He makes sokka’s armband with ivory from his own first (successful) solo hunt. i’m not sure abt the material of the pendant lmao maybe gold? but amber would also be cool methinks

as for the pendant engraving they display a unique single braincell moment (untrue i just want them to match). love the fact that both of them are sea savvy navigators, love to think that in their pining era they spent a lot of time watching the stars and showing each other the different constellations and navigation pointers of their nations, so in both of their armbands’ stones are depicted the constellation used to guide sailors back home, sokka engraving the swt’s one on zuko’s armband and vice versa.

if they were sun’s out guns out kinda guys before this only gets worse during the first weeks of their engagement. shirts are banned. everyone look at the bethrotal armbands NOW.

omg okay the thought of them interacting is actually so juicy. i bet piandao thinks hakoda is an evil asshole who was incredibly cruel to sokka if not straight up abusive. meanwhile hakoda is like “who tf is this bougie colonizer who thinks he knows my son better than i do…” like piandao doesn’t yell, he just kind of condescendingly berates in an infuriatingly calm tone, but when he meets hakoda he is immediately like “your son is a genius and a prodigy and he’s the greatest swordsman i’ve ever known and he has the soul of an artist and the heart of a lionturtle and the mind of a visionary and he’s perfect actually” and hakoda is just like “oh. wow. yeah. okay. glad we agree!” and piandao is just like “UMMMMM. WHAT.” and he’d be sooo fucking confused because everything hakoda says about sokka is so loving and proud and kind and all he does is praise him effusively to the point that piandao is like “does he know he also has another child…?” but piandao KNOWS that this man gave him a complex (because !!! he did!!!) so he’s just like “how is any of this possible….” all because he doesn’t understand the psychopathology of the colonized subject. smh

-unlabelled or pansexual, also incredibly gnc. he/they methinks

-he never questioned it, he never thought about it. the air nomads were chill with everything, so he was too.

-he simply loves people, and he loves them deeply. he's the sort of person who says "i love you" very fast. and he doesn't have a specific type, either. he simply connects with people.

-he definitely had a bit of a thing for kuzon back in the day. kuzon taught him all the fire nation dances he knows, and bumi cheered them on.

-he also kinda digged teo, the mechanist's son, but by that point he already had his heart set on katara.

-as for girls, he DID like on-ji. in different circumstances, they would might have dated for a short while. but with katara it was love at first sight. the sort that makes you giddy and stupid.

-he's a lot worse at rizzing up katara because he is just THAT into her and he keeps fumbling

-growing up, she never really questioned it. she knew she definitely liked boys and never had feelings for another girl.

-zuko was sokka's bi awakening. seeing zuko and suki run around in the boiling rock absolutely changed his brain chemistry.

-he had a hard time accepting it, because of how the water tribes roll. he had a preconceived notion of manhood that he obviously had to challenge alongside his initial sexism.

-but then he realised that 1) his dad had been in a secret poly relationship with kya and bato, and then with bato and malina-- 2) his grandma had a fling with hama--3) master piandao and jeong jeongwere a thing--and 4) his girlfriend herself, suki, was bi. so bro had nothing to worry about.

-his identity became clear to him with suki's and his father's help. unlike katara, he was a bit more open and public with it. being poly, him and suki had many opportunities to explore it, always respecting each other's boundaries.

-sometimes suki does his makeup and he grows to enjoy it. he experiments with gender expression until he becomes totally chill with it.

-big part of his character is learning that he doesn't have to be a “man” in the way that patriarchy imposed on him his whole life

-toph has crushes on boys: sokka, zuko, the duke, satoru, sun, kanto. but i think non of them are really legit.

-toph would also flirt with girls, like, yaling

-had a 'not like other girls' phase

-because she was made fun off by other girls as a child, it was harder for her to blend in and talk with them
