How do you start backpacking? I want to start but don’t know what gear/where to go
Omg hello! Yes, yes, I’m super excited! Okay. So I will try to get you started. But before we start, you gotta know the motto: every ounce counts!
The Backpack
The first thing you’re obviously going to need is good hiking experience and a backpack. Your backpack will be dependent on a number of factors, most importantly though correct fit, trip length, frame style, and additional features.
Correct Fit: Packs are usually measured by torso length from like 15-20+ inches. Stores like REI are great Bc they can help you properly fit your backpack to you, but you really want a pack that is comfortable on your hips as that is where you’ll be carrying the majority of the weight. If it feels like it’s in your shoulders, don’t get that bag, you’ll pay for it.
Trip Length: are you going overnight or a lengthy week long+ trip? I like to generally go for a larger pack as it is more versatile and packs can be expensive! I’d say a good multi-day pack is 60-80 liters. If you’re going longer than 5 days, I’d suggest at least 70 and up. If you plan on being more of a weekend backpacker (2-3 days) you can get away with a 50-60 liter bag and you’ll save empty pack weight. If you plan on just doing overnight excursions though, save the money and weight and go for something like 30-50 depending on how many “luxuries” you want to bring with you. I have an 80 liter and I LOVE it. I can pack pretty easily for a 5 day trip depending on how much water I have to bring (depends on environment). ***However*** if you plan on being more of a winter backpacker, CHOOSE A BIGGER PACK! You’ll have more gear, a bigger sleeping bag, and more clothing layers to bring with you.
Frame style: Internal vs. external frame packs. My first was an external frame, which gives you a lot of lashing opportunities (lashing means securing something to your pack with straps); however, they have pretty much been phased out at this point. But some people are diehard on them. Personally having both, I’d say the internal frame feels more stable and is more comfortable and I can fit most everything into my pack. I’d suggest internal frame honestly. There are also frameless packs for ultralight backpacking
Features: What do you want on your pack? Do you want a ton of pockets? Does it come with a hydration reservoir sleeve or built in rain cover? How many options do you have for lashing? Just some things to think about when buying a pack.
The Gear
Now that you’ve got your correctly fitted backpack, you have to fill it with gear that is essential and lightweight. There is specially made equipment for backpacking, which is lighter, smaller, and more efficient. You can find this at an outdoor sporting store and Amazon. You’ll also want to make sure you pack it correctly.
The essentials:
Tent: your tent will be dependent on season (3 season vs. 4 season ie winter), capacity (how many people are staying in it), and weight/size
Sleeping Bag and Pad: The most important decision here will be the temperature rating, which is dependent on environment. The hotter your environment, the higher your temperature rating. If you’re going in summer, aim for a +30 F and higher (0 C and up). If you’re going for spring, summer, or fall/autumn, go 15-30 F (0 to -9.4 C). For winter I’d go 0 F (-17.8 C) and below honestly. I have a 20 F bag I took in winter once and got hypothermia because the weather changed on me, so stay safe and go warmer when in doubt. You never know wtf is going to happen in winter). I now have a 0 F bag (The North Face Snowshoe) and it is amazingly warm 👍Your pad will be dependent on comfort level and environment (inflatable vs. flat/roll up). If you’re going to be sleeping on cold ground, you want something thicker to keep you away from it. If you’re in summer and don’t care about comfort as much, buy a MUCH cheaper roll up pad. The inflatables can be very expensive.
Stove, Fuel, food, and Kitchen Supplies: these are all specialized for backpacking. Lightweight and compact. Your food will be either freeze dried or dehydrated. I like Mountain House (freeze dried), but Good To-Go uses clean ingredients if that is something important to you. I recently started dehydrating my own stuff and it’s a lot cheaper/healthier!
Water and Water-Treatment: are you out in the desert and carrying your water (sucks bc heavy) or will you have access to a water source and treat it with a filter/purifier? (Pump, UV, bottle, chemicals, boiling). I use a pump and haven’t had any issues! A bit heavier though.
Clothing and Hygiene: always bring an extra pair of socks. Trust me.
Emergency/Useful Equipment: knife/multi-tool, sunscreen, headlamp (with batteries), navigation (GPS, maps, compass. I use AllTrails app and omfg, what a life saver), permits (very important to research this before going on a trip), fire supplies (matches, lighter), whistle, first-aid (with emphasis on foot care, especially for new backpackers/hikers. I recommend Moleskin for blisters), trekking poles (*highly recommend, would never backpack without them*), repair kit (to patch tent/inflatable sleeping pad)
Specifics to environment: raincover for backpack, rain gear (jacket/pants), bear spray, bear canister, gaiters (sleeves that go over your boots. I always use them because it keeps rocks out of my boots. *highly recommend for winter and muddy places*), insect repellent, mosquito net, winter gear for icy conditions (ice axe, helmet, rope, crampons, snow shoes)
Extra/Optional:
Camera, daypack with/without hydration reservoir (if you have a long trip and plan to hike away from camp), something to pass the time (book, card games), pillow, solar charger
The Trip
Now that you have everything, all that’s left is deciding where to go!
I was 13 when I started. My first backpacking trip was a simple section of the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail), 3 days/2 nights. My pack was way too heavy, I didn’t really know what I was doing, and I brought way too much stuff that I really didn’t need, but it’s one of my favorite memories with my dad.
You will learn things about how you like to set up and which gear is the most essential. You will probably bring too much weight. You will probably forget things or realize you’d really like to have a certain thing you don’t. It’s a learning process. You’ll figure it out though through trial and error (: Choose a relatively chill trail your first time and ENJOY IT!

Some idea I found in my drafts and decided I need to post cause I haven’t posted actual content here in a week... :’)
ANYWHO a Fruk thing I’ve been thinking about lately is...neighbors. Or like, they live across the street from eachother. And Arthur’s mum just ADORES Fran, she thinks he’s a great influence on her boys and she’s always happy to have him over cause the Kirkland bunch and Fran (and his lil sister) love to play together!!
As they get older, like late middle school, Art will come home from soccer/football practice and hes all gross and bruised up and. And. Mrs. Kirkland is in the kitchen with Francis making dinner >:( ‘Mum!!! Stop inviting him over without telling me!!! It’s embarrassing!!’ ‘Oh come on dear! He’s such a sweet boy! He’s staying for dinner so go wash up! He helped me make beef stew, isnt that nice!!??’
Art and Fran both will just walk into eachother’s houses to hang out. Of course they started off as friends but then they start holding hands *gasp* and...dare I say...Cuddle? The first time they did that was freshman year, they curled up in Fran’s basement and watched Hoarders. It wasn’t a very romantic show but they very much enjoyed holding eachother beneath the blankets!
^When Mr. Bonnefoy came down to get Arthur the boys JUMPED apart like HAHA nothings going on yup just normal friend activities...They weren’t fooling anyone
They started going to homecoming together and going on dates that weren’t really dated but definetly could be called dates and oooooh boy they had their first kiss together under the bleachers after Fran’s tennis game :) he lost! But! The kiss made it feel like a win!!
By 11th grade they start spending the night at eachothers houses and keeping changes of clothes, toothbrushes, combs, cologne etc in eachothers rooms. Nerds. They just!! Fell very hard for eachother and their parents were supportive ahjsosb just something soft and nice ahhhHHh
Fran gets voted prom king and Art’s happy for him but after the whole ceremony thing Fran comes over and assures him ‘Aw, it’s okay, you’re the real prom king in my heart!’ ‘Okay charmer, enjoy your moment of glory cause I’m ready to ditch this joint and go get some chicken nuggets’ ‘You know what? That sounds like a great idea’
^^^^^before prom Mrs Kirkland took thejr picture and cried happy tears cause she loves them so much. The older Kirkland brothers tease Arthur to no end for being a momma’s boy but oh welllllllll oh well!!!! It was hard for Art AND Fran not to cry seeing her cry lmao
They get married right after college and get a cute lil apparent and a cat :)

Amazon Prime Concert
ok here are all my thoughts about the gig. i've already posted a few thoughts such as how brilliant the audience were before taylor even came on, chanting her name and then screaming to high hell when appeared, and a few other things, but i've sort of decided to live post a bit in one post to be less annoying. so here is my terrible stream of consciousness, live from my bed and thanks to a total lack of sleep!
omg she's starting with me! yay!- i loved that she played this first. her first song released which is, at the end of the day, owned by her and it's so happy and cheery and it's such a positive start to this era. love it. also the video is unbeatable. suddenly thinking about benjamin. been distracted brb.
blank space - hell yeah after the last few weeks taylor's gonna play blank space! another great big fuck you to the media's opinion of her. god i love this song. she so smort. this song will never age because the media will always be this dumb. this is why taylor's timeless.
owh she's giving a speech about everyone already being the most supportive crowd. good work gang. that's what we were aiming for tonight.
ikywt - i felt it was really interesting she played ikywt, especially given that it's one of the few songs sc**ter changed on apple music. to me it felt like she was reminding everyone that it was HER song, no matter what he did with it. ooh a slightly funky ending! ooh taylor yeah mix it up!
'I wrote all of it'' YES TAYLOR! fucking tell em! we will never forget this. and i love that this is how she's dealing with it. cause she's right. tbh it's not like she needs the money from them and although i'm sure it fucking HURTS to a) be backstabbed by someone so close to her and b) have her musical children in the hands of someone else, she knows that in the world's eyes and in the fans' eyes and especially in her eyes the music is hers. and that's so important. we're not under any pretences that entire albums were ghostwritten like some singers do. we know that taylor's work is her own and so we accredit it to her. so i'm glad she's reminding everyone publicly again who wrote those somgs because she deserves to reiterate that no matter whose hands those songs are in...that she wrote them. good for you taylor.

she’s 17 and a senior
she’s center midfielder for the soccer team, track team member, and backspot for the cheer squad.
her main sport is soccer just because she grew up doing it tbh. she loves it and is planning on going to college w a scholarship for it
she runs track bc its literally the only sport where she doesnt have to rely on others and it keeps her in shape for soccer

she literally only tried out for the cheer squad bc she lost a bet w her brother so here she is cheering every friday night

Outside of their family, how are the kids doing socially? Do they make friends, trust people easily? Do they have a hard time keeping their powers a secret? Does one of their moms being a Luthor affect the way people act around them? How do they deal with their moms kinda being in the public eye?
oof well this started fluffy and got angsty and then got cute again so do with that what u will
so for the most part? the kiddos do alright!!! they rlly do, like they’re all enough like kara that ofc they attracts ppl like moths to flame
finn’s like easily one of the most popular kids in school, starting from elementary school and like he’s not one of the traditionally popular boys?? like he’s not a jock and he’s not one of those uber macho dudes but he cares so deeply and fully and like all the girls love him to death and all the uber macho dudes for the most part love him to death as well
like he’s rlly soft and kind and remembers ppls birthdays and who has a nut allergy so he always makes sure to make a separate safe batch of baked goods for bake sales. he’s that kid that’s got tabs on everyone and knows who is having a bad week and who might need someone to eat with at lunch and he makes it look so fun to be nice?? that he just manages to lead by example and national city prep academy is a nicer place for him being in it
maia’s that ride or die friend like she’s super intense and kind of scary tbh but god when she picks you, she Picks you and she’ll keep picking you, keep standing up for you, keep vehemently defending u until her dying day tbh like she loves so much like kara, once she sees the good in you, once she’s decided ur one of her ppl, she’ll fight everyone in her sight for u and that is so wildly appreciated, like she has all the girls at school wanting to have her on their side, in their corner and the best thing is that she is, she will be, no questions asked
like?? she’s not half as soft as finn but she’s just as caring, just as loving and she like?? doesnt have a cult following, but she definitely is that hot ass senior that has all the underclassmen stumbling over themselves bc she nodded at one of them in the hall during passing period and stella dies a little inside bc all her friends are in love with maia to some degree
stella is the one that struggles the most socially?? bc everyone loves finn and maia doesnt give a shit if some ppl dont like her, barely notices it, but stella is a little quieter and a little bit different and she kind of weirds ppl out bc she’s just as intense as maia but she doesnt have the cool factor, she stumbles over her feet and stammers and gets easily overwhelmed and most ppl get a little weirded out by how stella always seems to know how they’re feeling?? can sort of predict whats coming in a conversation???
but god when she makes friends, they are so so protective of her. like?? stella is disliked by a lot of ppl, is a pretty easy target but her friends love her so so deeply bc she knows how to help them best, is v careful with their feelings in a way that not a lot of kids think to be u know?? she’s not the most popular, but she’s p well insulated by the time she hits high school, has a rlly solid group of friends that stick close to her
this kind of goes hand in hand with the first part but here’s some other anecdotes lmao
finn makes friends so so easily like that boy walks into a room and within the first ten minutes he’s already got five new friends like?? he’s probably one of those student ambassadors, shows all the new kids around the campus tbh and like for sure has brownies or something to give them
like??? he’s for sure voted mr congeniality. For Sure. he collects friends and favors so easily and so quickly and he loves them all so much, you would think that maybe some friendships arent as deep as others and that’s true, but that doesnt mean he doesnt love those friends just as much, wouldnt drop what he’s doing to go pick them up bc their car died on the highway
that said, he doesnt trust super easily?? like he’s p wary in general, a little more suspicious of ppl than he ever lets on. like it takes him a Long time to rlly ever tell his rlly close friends any big details abt himself. it takes him even longer to ever invite ppl over to the house, even tho his moms are like you can?? pls do?? have a childhood kiddo
maia takes a little longer to make friends i think?? but that’s more a matter of her not noticing someone is trying to be friends with her, like she’s sort of above it all a lot of the times, often wrapped up in her own head. but like i said, she’s p intense so once she’s noticed, she’ll dive in head first like all in, ride or die
and its so funny bc she is so so like non-plussed by things like what movie to see or stuff like that, she’s kind of a rlly great friend without meaning to?? like oh, yall were planning to do a mall night but ur period started and u dont have the energy and now u just want to lie around and eat ice cream?? she’ll pick up ur fave flavors and probably a couple redbox rentals and is down for a movie night, maybe becomes ur favorite person in that exact moment
she actually trusts ppl more easily than finn, if only bc generally the ppl that are more insistent abt actually getting to know her, not just that scary person she puts forward are usually ppl that genuinely care abt her and want the best for her?? that said, she gets in with a bad crowd and dates this super fucking awful abusive asshole that sort of destroys that innate trust for a while. she gets it back eventually, thanks to those friends she had before the entire experience, who stood by her even when she tried to push them away
stella takes the longest to make friends?? she’s like that shy kid in the corner that wont make eye contact but when she does u feel like she’s probably seen ur soul and knows all ur secrets (which....techincally she doesnt see souls and only knows maybe four or five of ur secrets) but she’s rlly sweet and v earnest and ppl sort of find her endearing after a while
like?? she finally finds her ppl when she joins the drama department and switches soccer teams and gets into debate and starts a chess club, like?? when she starts actually embracing who she is and not trying to model herself after maia or finn or kara or lena, when she sort of loses herself in doing things that are actually interesting to her and not just what gets her the least negative responses from other ppl, she makes so many friends !!! like girl just has to get out of her own head sometimes
of the three kiddos, she definitely trusts the easiest, just bc like?? she knows what ppls intentions are, knows when someone’s hiding something from her or has ulterior motives for trying to befriend her. like most of the work is done for her just at first meeting like she rlly doesnt have to worry too much abt trusting ppl
they all sort of struggle with hiding their powers?? some more than others for sure
like finn probably struggles more than maia?? bc maia keeps taking that power-suppressant all through school, but finn wants to learn to control himself, wants to not be as dependent on something else to make him more human, safer for others to be around. so he wears the glasses and softens his touch and makes sure he never moves too quickly, gives up on sports and works hard to never get angry, never let the hum of his heat vision get too distracting
its rlly hard when he’s around his friends, harder when he starts dating, bc other ppl dont have to worry abt the stuff he has to worry abt?? like he has to have like a lot of talks with kara abt it bc he gets overwhelmed a lot, worries a lot abt accidentally hurting someone he loves
maia on the other hand struggles more with the lying?? like she has this ride or die mentality and it fucks her up that she cant tell the ppl she trusts this giant secret abt her, this thing that defines her existence?? Fucks Her Up tbh like.....she’s like a vault, her friends confess all their shit to her and she hates that she cant do the same?? cant do that without endangering her brother and sister and moms and, rlly, her entire family and she’s not going to do that, wont ever do that
so like she struggles with that, but the actual powers part of it isnt as big of a thing for her bc she keeps taking the suppressant bc she just?? doesnt trust herself not to. doesnt trust the power in her hands, like she wont take it on the weekends bc thats when kara trains her and finn, takes them to the deo to spar but during the week, when she doesnt have kara’s steady presence to ground her, finn’s quiet hand at her shoulder to stop her when she’s about to go too far
stella struggles with it but its different?? like she’s not hiding superhuman strength or the ability to fly or anything so conspicuous, but she has to like.....constantly monitor what she says and how she acts towards ppl that dont know like?? ppl get kind of weirded out when she knows stuff abt them or like....knows their heart or some shit when they’ve only rlly known each other for a few months
that said, she also gets away with a whole lot by just saying she’s rlly empathetic with this weird little smirk that her friends think is just her poking fun at the fact that she can be kind of spacey and not super aware abt other stuff all the time but lol little do they know
i mean?? at school?? most ppl dont know like she’s mrs danvers or (insert kiddos name)’s mom and like especially in elementary school, she’s not the one at pta meetings bc she knows what will happen if other parents see her and make the connection?? so its usually kara and she usually flies under the radar, like ppl kind of know that she’s the kara danvers from page six, wife of lena luthor and doing the gala circuit when needed, but no one ever like rlly registers it ya know??
likes the kiddos friends kind of put it together but she’s still just mrs danvers to them, their friends rlly cool mom that helps them do these rlly awesome science experiments when they come over and are bored. a couple ppls parents find out and refuse to let their kids go over anymore and the kids dont understand why and lena like.....lost tbh. like how does she explain that?? how does she let them know its her fault, that she did this to them by association and for that she is truly sorry
but like the kiddos rlly just let it roll of their backs like it only happens maybe a handful of times and their friends are still their friends at school
but like?? when they get older, they get more vocal, like?? they’re proud of their mother and theyre so fucking sick of hearing the weird, awful comments ppl make about luthors whenever lex winds up in the news again and maia reaches a point of just FUCK OFF levels of anger, starts screaming IM A LUTHOR TOO, MOTHERFUCKER when she tackles someone in the hallway after hearing superman should do the world a favor and just get rid of that entire rats nest during passing period and that’s sort of what outs them all
things change a little after that?? like most of their friends stick around, but there is definitely a wariness towards the danvers kiddos after that, but they bear it with pride, like finn and stella arent upset in the slightest. like?? so they lost a couple friends; good, better leave now bc they love their mom a whole hell of a lot more than those ppl and that’s never going to change
like?? they rlly arent that aware of the weird spotlight they live in for a while when they’re small, particularly maia and finn like......kara and lena kept their relationship rlly rlly quiet for a long time. like?? no one knew they were an item until they rlly needed to come out and say it, and then they got engaged and married rlly quietly, just family and lena kept her name professionally so no one rlly knew. and they kept her pregnancy under wraps, not necessarily hiding?? but just not announcing it either and quite honestly the press doesnt know abt finn until some opportunistic pap gets a shot of kara and lena with little roly poly finn at the park, looking every bit the deliriously happy family they are. its much the same for maia, with no one outside of their little circle of friends and family knowing abt her until someone catches a picture of them with two little ones, not one. and like stella?? hell, stella doesnt rlly get a debut until she’s nearly four tbh and its bc she v seriously asks to be lena’s date to her gala and like how was lena going to say no to that request
that said, when they get older, they’re kind of prime targets for some asshole opportunistic paps to swarm and try and get quotes from, try and smear the luthor name some more. lena issues a no nonsense statement that she’s fair game, but her children are off limits. catco worldwide issues a similar statement, that the family lives of their reporters are not open for discussion and that such targeting of children is a reprehensible act that has no place in journalism
that helps, that and the ruthless way their family encircles them, fights the press and tabloids and fights to give the kiddos as normal of a life as possible. and like??? they rlly do. there’s a couple incidents where the heightened scrutiny was noticeable, but mostly?? the kiddos rlly dont notice, just flip the newspaper over when its lex on the front page or switch whatever gossip show off when the topic comes round to lena, little things like that that help them live as normally as they can

hi my little fairy princes and princesses. i asked if i should make a small post to introduce myself and several people said yes so here it is:
first of all, my name is amelia. im from the east coast and im a 20 year old girl. i love makeup, hair, clothes, skin care products, bath bombs, and everything like that. if you ever want any advice or tips on that stuff please ask. i love helping people out with beauty stuff!!! i also love video games and sports, specifically hockey and soccer. but most importantly, i love criminal minds.
CM is my all-time fav show but i also like a lot of other ones. i do this weird thing where i watch all of my reality shows on time and live, but i wait for my non-reality shows to come out with a full season before i binge watch them.
the reason i started watching criminal minds was actually because i used to watch a random canadian show called “higher ground” that aj cook was in when she was younger. one day i was caught up on all my shows and i needed something new to watch and i was like hey i really liked that girl why dont i see what else she’s in? so i googled her and CM popped up. and well, the rest is history.
here’s a list of some shows i watch: big brother, survivor, catfish, the real world, the challenge, are you the one, the bachelor/bachelor in paradise, bad girls club, prison break, dexter, greys anatomy, jane the virgin, quantico, shameless, game of thrones, stranger things, orange is the new black, new girl, skins, project runway, unbreakable kimmy schmidt, the walking dead, gossip girl, star crossed, 90210, hart of dixie, the 100, skam, american horror story, sense 8, chicago pd, chicago med, chicago fire, and a shit load of others that i cant think of right now.
besides tv, i really like music. ariana grande and dua lipa are my queens. i like a lot of different genres and artists and im always opened to suggestions if you ever have any. i played clarinet in high school and i play piano in my free time. i tried guitar but my hands are short and stubby so it didnt go so well.
i also swear a lot. i dont know why but i just do. even in my fics, i tend to swear way too much. it’s a bad habit that im trying to break. speaking of fics, this isnt my first fanfiction blog, but it’s the only one ive ever had that has popped off. im not a super great writer but i just like to do it and like creating little stories.
so like i said, im 20, so im in college. i live alone in a little apartment and have a dog named ani (anakin). he’s my whole world. school sucks but i manage. im majoring in criminal justice so you can probably tell why i love CM so much.
i also love it a lot because spencer is my favorite fictional character ever. i literally love him so much i cant even put it into words. i always tell people my personality is more like matthew, but my ideal man is spencer. ((and my ideal pet is simon lmao)).
i dont really know what else to say because im pretty average and boring. im really sarcastic so if i ever offend you just know it probably wasnt on purpose. i have a weird sense of humor and i type really internet-ish. i love memes and i have a reaction pic for pretty much every situation. i always keyboard smash and i hate capital letters. the only time youll see proper grammar and punctuation from me is in my fics cause i know how hard it is to read a story if the format isnt organized.
my ao3 is the exact same username. sometimes mobile messes up my masterlist and its just easier to read my fics on there.
