Chapter 48 of Harrow the Ninth

Ahh, I've missed Gideon POV

At first I thought that the double douchebag comment was about Lyctorhood in general, but then I remembered that Gideon was totally 100% for getting eaten by Harrow. I guess Ianthe is just a double douchebag because Gideon considered both Ianthe and Naberius douchebags, so now they are a double douchebag

Oh Gideon, wanting to kick Crux down the stairs 100% makes you awesome

(Actually, reading it again, I'm not sure if she means "fantasizing about kicking Crux down the stairs doesn't reflect well on me because kicking people down the stairs is bad" or if she means "the fact that I never kicked Crux down the stairs doesn't reflect well on me because I never did it")

But don't worry, Harrow thinks you're great regardless

So like, to what exact degree have the second-person parts of this book actually been through Gideon's perceptions? Or are they Gideon's experience filtered through Harrow's perceptions? Like, if Harrow hallucinated something that was not there, would Gideon have seen and reported it? Earlier Gideon said that she couldn't actually see out of Harrow's eyes during that part, so maybe she was just getting second-hand information from what Harrow saw, or thought she saw, and reporting on it? If seeing Cytherea's body was a hallucination, it does make sense that Gideon wouldn't question it, since she's not used to questioning the things she sees. But, maybe Gideon was actually perceiving stuff herself, somehow, and everything that Harrow reported actually happened, including Cytherea's body under the bed, and Ianthe telling her that stuff didn't happen was just gaslighting? Now I'm not sure anymore

So Mercy ducked out to go kill Harrow, and just never came back, and Harrow left for obvious reasons, and then Augustine left for currently unknown reasons, and then Ianthe abandoned Gideon the First because she's just like that. I hope Gideon the First doesn't die because of this, I've sort of settled on him being maybe the only good Lyctor at this point

So he also came to whatever conclusion Mercy came to based on Gideon's eyes, in a lot less time, and it has something to do with John, and he's also had some thought about Mercy, so maybe he knew she was ducking out to go kill Harrow. Ok. I still don't know what the significance of this is. You know, it is kind of funny how much of this plot is hinging on people's eye colors, because I can't actually tell people's eye color in real life, like I feel at this point that Gideon's eyes must be like broadcasting the bat signal or something for everyone to be reacting to them this quickly. Like, I can see if eyes are light or dark, but are the light eyes blue, or grey, or green? I have zero idea. I don't think I could actually tell unless I went up to someone and stared at them from three inches away, or something. And while I was googling for pictures of what amber eyes actually look like in reality, I remembered that I don't even really know my own eye color, either. I was always told it was hazel, and that's what it says on my driver's license, but then when I joined the Sims 2 fandom like 15 years ago and downloaded some custom hazel eyes thinking I was going to go make some sims with my eye color, those eyes were a completely different color than my eyes, and I learned that by "hazel" people usually mean the kind of eyes that are like partially brown and partially green, whereas my eyes are definitely a single solid color all the way through and if I actually look at the wikipedia page on eye color, they do look most similar to the picture for the amber eyes. But then wikipedia also says this:

which is a pretty good description of my eye color, and I think also a good description of the picture on the wikipedia page for amber eyes. So I've got no idea, honestly. By the way, I can't find any other source online for this statement about hazel sometimes meaning hazelnut-colored, every site I can find seems to use the brown-mixed-with-green definition. The four sources in that image are not about language use with respect to eye color descriptions, or about eye color genetics, they're just miscellaneous eye studies in which eye color was a variable and all four of them divide all possible human eye colors into one of three categories: blue/grey, green/hazel, and brown. I can't read the full articles, but for all I know these references are just meant to mean "some scientists classify eye color this way for simplicity's sake". There's one person on the talk page of the wikipedia article claiming that the definition of hazel = hazelnut-colored is the main one and the brown + green definition is specious, but they seem to be contradicted by the entire internet. So what is hazel? What is amber? What are Gideon's eyes supposed to look like? What color are my eyes? I don't know. I don't know the answers to any of those questions

Did Gideon get "so many" letters from Harrow? The only ones I remember from Gideon the Ninth were the various snippy notes that Harrow left her after she went to go adventuring in the facility, and after the siphoning challenge, but I'm not sure that qualifies as "so many". Did Harrow write letters to Gideon before they came to Canaan House?

I have to wonder under what circumstances Harrow thought Ianthe might run into Gideon that she gave her this letter. Did she expect this exact thing to happen? I got the feeling at the beginning that she had some other ultimate plan in mind for Gideon besides her sharing Harrow's body. Also, didn't Harrow work very very hard to not achieve One Flesh One End with Gideon?

And of course, the sunglasses will hide Gideon's eyes, for when she goes to talk to John. I would have thought this was part of Harrow's plan, except I'm also like 100% sure that Harrow also has no more idea about what Gideon's eye color means than Ianthe does

I feel like Ianthe thinks she's in a completely different genre of book. She wants to be this clever, aristocratic lady in a fantasy of manners that's full of intrigue and backstabbing and then she falls in love with some dude (or some woman, maybe) and has to keep that from unraveling all of her plans, but instead she's in this gross body horror story where love isn't keeping a lock of someone's hair, it's giving yourself DIY brain surgery in order to prevent the destruction of their immortal soul after they died. I think she does know why Harrow did what she did, though, I think she said so herself in that one chapter we got that was from her POV. She's just trying to stir shit here. But more fool her, I'm pretty sure Gideon already thinks that Harrow removed her memories of her because she hated her, I don't think there's any way that Ianthe could hurt Gideon here that Gideon hasn't already done to herself

I feel like Harrow and Gideon came away with very different impressions of what exactly went down during the Pool Scene

I'm still not entirely sure how right Gideon is about this and how much of it really was just Ianthe trying to use Harrow. And I think it's hilarious that she immediately comes back to "she was a hypocrite for getting upset about the necrophilia"

Is there going to be any love confession in this story that is not completely fucked up?

This is obviously supposed to be some sort of joke, and it was mentioned repeatedly in that "what's the worst joke" poll, but I don't get it at all

I think it's something I've been doing for a long time, maybe before I fully understood what it was, but my first proper exposure to fanfiction on the internet was via elementary-school me searching the internet for crossovers between different things I liked (mostly ending up on Fanfiction.net and dedicated single-fandom archives.)

My first experiences actually writing fic, from what I remember, involved posting through my friend's account while over at their house because I didn't have an email and couldn't make one myself, haha. (Of course, that account is long deleted now…)

I basically have a big reclist for longer completed works on AO3 here: rainy day longfic <3, so I'll go for a couple of authors off the top of my head:

Seebright (@/lackadrastical): beautiful Hollow Knight fic! I have both of their longfics in my longfic reclist, but they've got some lovely oneshots as well. I love their Ghost and general sibling trio characterization so much. <333

CourierNew: wrote another really good HK longfic, but also I love love love their Deltarune oneshots! Their prose is so good and sharp and eerie and there's a perfect sort of tone to it I don't know quite how to describe…

tls1314 (@/tls332): beautiful Rain World fic!! A time travel fixit that's ongoing, and some quieter oneshots. Also a Hollow Knight oneshot which is probably the only (or one of the only) fics I've ever seen to pull off first person POV with Hornet.

NoelleHolidayStanAccount (TerminalMiraculosis): as the name suggests, really good Noelle-centric Deltarune fic, but also the formatting?? The CSS?? It's so fucking cool and creative to see, and I wish more authors really leaned into the ability to make AO3 do fun stuff like that.

symptoms of acute radiation poisoning (this is a lie i just like to read this page for fun. don't look at me)

a bunch of stuff about reproductive behaviors of various invertebrates (for, and i cannot stress this enough, worldbuilding purposes)

how big can a slug get (answer: the size of a very drippy football, apparently)

Large Animal Immobilon, some very weird back of the napkin math, and the discovery that 500mL syringes do exist and will haunt my nightmares forevermore (same fic as #1)

My original username, Firedjinn, came from me being really, really into Golden Sun at the time I signed up for an FFN account, haha. I think I originally had some other GS-djinni-themed names in an old word doc somewhere? But this is apparently what stuck, and I've kept it around for continuity.

(Also funny story: the reason this account is called 'firedjinni' is because someone has had the URL firedjinn since 2013 where they have posted one (1) cosplay photo and nothing else since. I assume it's an active user since the name has never expired? Anyway uh yeah.)

Aaw, While My Guitar Gently Weeps is one of my favourites too, though not one I have listened to as much as some of their other songs. But it just has that.... that sound to it. When The Levee Breaks is one of my favourite Zeppelin songs too! I was reluctant to listen to Stairway at first when I was getting into Zeppelin because that's the popular one, but then it came on on a playlist and..... well okay it's great. x)

Sadly, i’ve been stuck indoors the past few days due to bad weather so i didn’t get any christmas shopping done. i’m hoping the weather’s a bit tomorrow so i can finally get my bass guitar! i’m super stoked!! 😄 i already know it’s gonna be love at first sight 🥰

and i’m happy to hear you listened to DB. that entire album is just *chefs kiss* bellissimo 😘🤌🏼✨ i love that not only did Eric wrote most of the songs on that album, but he also engineered/produced it! UGH! that man has it all..extremely talented, handsome, smart, funny, hardworking and so devoted to his career, all the more reason for me to fall for him more and more everyday 😍 anyways, if you like 10cc’s stuff i recommend listening to “How Dare You” “Sheet Music” and “The Original Soundtrack” next! all three are very brilliant albums and ones that really catapulted my obsession with those 10cc boys ☺️

I remember writing an essay about While My Guitar back in 10th and surprisingly I got a good grade on it. The lyrics are so profound, I think. One can interpret that song so many ways. Stairway is always a classic, but I mainly like their other not-so-popular songs. Since getting back into Zep, I’ve been repeatedly listening to their first three albums and I gotta say, every time I revisit their catalog I always end up gaining a new appreciation for their music. Lately, I’ve really obsessed with No Quarter (honestly, it’s mainly bc of jpj lol). JP’s live piano solo for No Quarter has definitely given me a newfound appreciation for him as an artist. Funny thing and I might’ve mentioned this already but, when I first got into Zeppelin years ago I only became obsessed with them bc of Jimmy Page then I went through a short Robert Plant phase, then the last time I was on my Zeppelin kick a few years ago it was bc Bonzo reeled me in lol. Jonesy always seems to be overshadowed by the other three, probably bc he was always “the quiet one” But now that I got back into them, I truly believe he was the real MVP of the group 💗

And Sweden, eh? i bet you have some interesting stories to tell about your country. I can’t say much bc I live in Northeastern United States where it’s boring and there are more cows than people, yeehaw! 🤠

No special plans for today, just watching holiday films. Couldn’t really do much today since my mom’s been sick and has been spending this entire weekend resting :(( we’re probably gonna celebrate after Christmas once she’s feeling better.

Talk About AHS Characters and My Friend's Reactions to Them

Okay, I went through the AHS wikis for Jimmy Darling, Kit Walker, James Patrick March, Tate Langdon, and Kyle Spencer earlier today.

I love most, if not all of these characters already.

Jimmy and Kit are holding my heart right now, though.

Now, this is coming from someone who found Evan Peters through X-men DOFP and X-men Apocalypse before knowing anything about AHS.

Spoilers ahead for AHS.

Anyway, I was ranting about the characters too my friends in a Discord server, but then I saw that Kit was in a polyamorous relationship.

So I sent my buddy @violet-fandom that little tidbit, and she was like "Oh, pog."

I also asked if she wanted to see him, so I sent her a GIF of him dancing and being happy and all that good stuff.

I then proceeded to tell her about the characters as I read about them, although I read about Kit maybe second or third? So I already read about some of them. So I filled her in on those guys too.

Like, I sent her a GIF of Kyle playing with a dog. Filled her in on him and what happened to him and what he was like, etc.

I was reading about Tate while I had sent her stuff on Kit and Kyle, and so I sent her some quotes from him and then some GIFs.

So, I sent her a GIF of Tate smiling.

Her response.

"Cute"

Followed by several emojis I can't find bc I'm on computer and my phone is an old samsung.

I couldn't tell if she was joking, since there wasn't a /j at the end, but I didn't think she'd find him like, attractive. Her type is assholes who wear blue hoodies and are riddled with trauma.

I sent her a GIF of Tate at the school before he, y'know.

Like, in the skeleton makeup.

Told her what he did too.

Still thought he was cute.

Understandably, of course.

I tell her about James Patrick March. Thinks he looks like a dipshit.

A fair assessment.

And I'm reading through his wiki page, and then I find out what he does with the bodies. I go "ew, nasty, icky, etc."

She says they're all nasty.

I recognize this. However, don't talk shit about Kit Walker like that.

But she hates James' wife and says she'd be ****different****

We then went onto Jimmy Darling, my beloved.

I love him so much. There's that whole thing where he goes around offering "unique sexual services" to housewives and such.

And then he gets his hands cut off later.

I made a joke saying that his fingering days were over.

Her response?

"No they're not."

I get confused, like hey bro, what?

That's the solution, apparently.

"He can hold this in his mouth and use this as a hand."

I then tell her how funny I find the character descriptions on the wiki for most of Evan's characters.

"Jimmy is an attractive young man with intense dark brown eyes, short, dirty blonde hair. He favors wearing a white tank top with overalls or motorcycle leathers."

"Mr. March is an attractive young man in his early thirties, with a fit physique. He is very immaculate of his outward appearance, always wearing pinstripe suits in 30s style. His black hair is combed back, and he has a mustache like that of Vincent Price or Howard Hughes, with striking dark brown eyes. An interesting element of him is his strange accent, reminiscent of the Brahmin accent."

Whatever.

I sent the Jimmy one first bc I was on his page, and I get this response:

"He also has a massive dick. Like I mean it’s huge and he’s also got the tightest ass and have you see his muscles?? He could clearly choke us to death also those veins tho"

I FUCKING LOST IT. I KID YOU NOT. I LOST MY GOD DAMN MIND.

I didn't know you were a fan of Les Miserables! I have only watched the movie but I have looked at fandom a lot and did try to read the book a few times, including flipping into the middle to try to pique my interest on less introductory stuff, so I have read several passages from the book. Do you by chance have any recommendations for how to get into the book? Like, your thoughts on compelling pleasures and experiences the book offers that might help motivate someone to read? ;)

I’m not the bessst person to ask about this, since I’ve only read the book once and that was in 2013 when I had an attention span, but I guess, uh, I think… actually, part of my pitch for Les Mis is that the digressions/introductory material/saddlebags are “fun”—well, sometimes when you’re reading them, after you become fond of Victor Hugo the person, like acclimating to the McElroy brothers’ speech tics—but also they’re fun in retrospect because they’re part of Les Mis’s building sense of inevitability? Which I don’t mean as in like, Ultimately Man Cannot Affect History Revolutions Are Called That For A Reason They Always Come Round Again, but rather I’m talking about the feeling of helplessness that possesses people smack in the middle of necessary, life-saving action, the way doing shit just takes so much time and there’s the decision at one end and the positive consequence far off (maybe!) at the other and in the middle there’s you, suffering and hating everything. And also there’s a soothing David Attenborough voiceover about slang in the background. Because a key feature of mortal panic is the real world trundling along inanely overhead. So what I’m saying is, you have to make the decision to read the book and then years later you will enjoy having read the book—

No. What I’m saying is, one of the pleasures of Les Mis for me is how it’s one long anxiety trip, or rather several nested and semi-discrete anxiety trips. Characters like Valjean, Marius, Fantine, Eponine, Grantaire, Javert, etc. make an impression because of how bad they are at dealing with life, because life is huge and shapeless close-up and full of authorial tangents. Um, and I don’t mean to suggest that Hugo’s narrative voice is like, jittery nightmare fuel or whatever, obviously it isn’t and since you’ve read passages you know that, but the expansive/dramatic/familiar/matter-of-fact tone he takes with both readers and characters is useful ultimately as a kind of safety line in what could otherwise be a pretty browbeating piece of tragedy. Even as Fantine sells her pure womanly lungs or whatever there’s still the much more interesting awareness that she’s like, a stupid impulsive 20something, not dead yet. The characters seem more vulnerable because they’re at risk of being made (and often are made) ridiculous at the same time as they’re at risk of dying. Les Mis is very funny. If you go way back to the start of my tag it’s just quotes of parts that are HILARIOUS.

…idk. There’s also that nice thing where Hugo is so didactic that it’s freeing for the reader: you know where he stands, you know how far you do or don’t agree with him. You could try starting with chapter two of book 3 if you want to skip to Fantine’s arc, which if I remember rightly is much more… sustained obviously-relevant-to-musical-plot narrative… than even the early Valjean stuff, though I love the Valjean stuff. As far as other inducements go, I would say generally the second half (from “Marius” onward) is more readable/fresh-feeling/livelier than the first, and opens up a lot as a narrative, because 1) the musical is looser about adapting the second half and 2) dreadful teens on a less compressed timescale in which to do their dreadful teening. Also, dreadful adult father Jean Valjean, whom I love. And the revolution was something Hugo had (some) personal shocky experience of to put on the page, unlike, say, “dying of poverty” or “fleeing the police as a wanted convict”
