The Ruins, Pearson Park, Hull
The Ruins, Pearson Park, Hull
Early in 1860 the Mayor of Hull, Zachariah Pearson, gave 27 acres of land to the Hull Corporation, on condition that they made an immediate start on laying it out as a public park. Initially known as the People’s Park, it was soon renamed Pearson Park in honour of the Mayor’s munificence. It was formally opened in September 1860, and quickly became a popular destination with all the usual…

📚 QUEERBOOK 2024 is hereee! We made a book by and for LGBTQ+ youth! 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈
Last year, we asked LGBTQ+ youth: what's your idea of a "queer utopia?"
Not gonna lie - with more than 150 bills introduced in 35 states in 2023 that aimed to restrict student access to inclusive and diverse books and other library materials, the theme felt pretty radical.
And you DELIVERED. With the help of our Youth Voices (amazing queer youth activists from across the country), we compiled your amazing submissions of poetry, short essays and letters, visual art, photography, and more into Queerbook 2024. Like a yearbook, it captures what queer youth are feeling, going through, and hoping for - right here, right now across the U.S.
It's also no accident that it's the perfect small-ish size to stash in your locker or backpack so you can crack it open any time you're looking for some queer connection. :3
Read some more about the book and grab your own limited-run copy of Queerbook 2024 now here.

LIVE: Titanic tourist submarine missing
A desperate search mission involving a remotely operated vehicle is under way to rescue a Titanic tourist submersible which has vanished 12,500ft below the Atlantic Ocean with less than 70 hours of air left.
British billionaire Harding is one of the mission specialists on the five-person vessel
UK-based Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Sulaiman Dawood are also on board
OceanGate Expeditions vessel reported overdue on Sunday about 435 miles south of St John's, Newfoundland
Major search and rescue operation involves military aircraft 900 miles east of Cape Cod
Coast Guard to hold press conference at 1pm
The Coast Guard will hold a press conference at 1pm on today (20/06/23) as the search continues for the missing submersible that vanished on Sunday. Canadian research vessel Polar Prince lost contact with their submersible during a dive to see the Titanic wreck, approximately 900 miles east of Cape Cod.
15:17: Titanic diver fears missing OceanGate sub imploded 10,000 feet underwater
An experienced diver who has traveled far into the depths of the ocean to view the Titanic wreckage fears the submersible that vanished on Sunday may have imploded thousands of feet underwater. G. Michael Harris, who said he possibly knows three of the five occupants on board the missing sub. He is not optimistic they will be rescued and believes there is nothing the U.S. Navy can do.
'Worst situation is something happened to the hull and our fear is that it imploded at around 3,200 meters,' (10,000 feet) Harris said.
At those depths, the weight of the water would exert extreme pressure on the missing submersible - around 6,000 pounds on each square inch of its hull.
An implosion would mean any hope is already long gone. If any part of the submersible's carbon-fiber and titanium hull had suffered a small crack or fault, a deadly implosion would have followed after.
'When you're talking 6,000 pounds per square inch, it is a dangerous environment. More people have been to outer-space than to this depth of the ocean. When you're diving in these situations you have to cross your T and dot your Is. You have to do everything absolutely perfect and by the book.'
14:30: The claustrophobic conditions inside missing Titanic sub
The search continues for the sub with five people on board, who are now cut off from the world in claustrophobic conditions. Thanks to previous reports on the Titan's deep-sea missions, we have a clear idea of what it is like for those trapped inside the submarine, where time is running out. In addition to the dwindling 96-hour oxygen supply, the passengers could also be facing increasingly cold conditions, and could suffer from hypothermia.
There are also no seats and only one toilet - a small black box - with a black curtain drawn across for privacy. All passengers are barefoot and must sit on the floor.
Assuming that the vessel is still intact, they currently have no communication to the outside world, and so no knowledge if and when anyone will reach them.
The claustrophobic conditions inside missing Titanic vessel. Thanks to previous reports on the Titan's deep-sea missions, we have a clear idea of what it is like for those possibly trapped in the cramped submarine that has gone missing in the Atlantic Ocean.
09:31: The deepest undersea rescue mission ever
A desperate search mission involving a remotely operated vehicle is under way to rescue a Titanic tourist submersible which has vanished 12,500ft below the Atlantic Ocean with around 70 hours of air left.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, said the OceanGate Expeditions vessel carrying five passengers, including British billionaire Hamish Harding, went missing at around 9.13pm on Sunday, about 435 miles (700 kilometres) south of St. John's, Newfoundland.
If they can be found, the operation would be 11,000ft deeper than the deepest successful undersea rescue in history - when British engineers Roger Mallinson and Roger Chapman survived after their submersible Pisces III was trapped on the seabed at a depth of 1,575ft off the south-west coast of Ireland in 1973.
Depths 'exceed those at which the NATO submarine rescue system can safely operate'
Sky News is reporting that the Ministry of Defence has released a statement, saying 'they are monitoring the incident but the depths of water greatly exceed those at which the Nato submarine rescue system can safely operate'.
09:11: Final text of British billionaire trapped inside missing Titanic sub to his friend
A friend of the British billionaire trapped inside a submarine missing on a voyage to the Titanic wreck has revealed the last text he was sent one day before heading out.
Retired Nasa astronaut Colonel Terry Virts, a friend of the missing Hamish Harding, said his fellow explorer had messaged him to say: 'Hey, we're headed out tomorrow, it looks good, the weather's been bad so they've been waiting for this.'
As rescue teams continued the search for the submersible vessel with five people aboard, Colonel Virts added that he and Mr Harding 'don't really talk about risks'.

The Crown Season 6 will film in Hull in October. Extras wanted!
Netflix's The Crown film schedule in Hull revealed ahead of final season
The sixth and final season of Netflix's flagship series The Crown is filming in Hull
From Hull Daily Mail Sept 22, 2022
Netflix are once again heading up the M62 to Hull to film for their sixth and final season of The Crown in October, with three dates confirmed for filming in the city centre.
Earlier this month, Netflix put out a casting call to residents of Hull for 300 people for their flagship royal family drama series. Potential extras were being offered a daily rate of £150-250.
It is thought the scenes, some filming until 3am, could be set on VE Day in 1945 in a flashback scene, with the extras being asked to come with 1940's appropriate hairstyles and a clean shaven look. That would reflect a previous movie filmed in Hull featuring the young Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret.

The rest of the season is set around the turn of the last century, with the yet to be released season five set in 1990's Britain in the lead up to the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.

October 24th, 25th and 26th are all going to be used to film in Hull, with Alfred Gelder Street and Queen Victoria Square shooting locations for what has proved one of Netflix's most popular shows.
The Crown filming schedule in Hull is:
October 24 - Hull city centre, Alfred Gelder Street - 3.45pm - 11pm
October 25 - Hull city centre, Alfred Gelder Street - 5pm - 3am
October 26 - Hull city centre, Queen Victoria Square - 4pm - 11pm
Following the Queen's passing, which paused production on the series, viewing numbers for The Crown have shot up 800% ahead of the fifth season's release in November.
This won't be the first time Hull was used as a royal movie set, with 2015's A Royal Night out been filmed largely in the city. The film followed the story of the then Princess Elizabeth and Margaret on VE Day.
“We chose Hull for a number of reasons – its architecture and history – and the city council was very accommodating in helping us arrange filming locations,“ assistant director Neil Wallace said at the time. With shooting locations involving City Hall and Queen Victoria Square, and The George Pub, which used the actual landlady Fiona George as the fictitious landlady in the film.
While the seasons of the Crown are set in chronological order, season six's plot information is thin on the ground. It is speculated that it follows the growing relationship of Prince William and Kate Middleton from teens to university students, with two actors being cast as the grieving Prince. Rufus Kamba will play him as a 15 year old, with Ed McVey embodying his young adult phase as reported by Deadline. With each of the prior seasons spanning their respective decade, we can expect to see the the possible backdrop of 9/11, the Iraq invasion and Tony Blair's new Labour leadership, the memories will be relatively fresh in the mind of viewers.
Other confirmed cast for season five and six include the Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Trainspotting's Johnny Lee Miller as PM John Major, Elizabeth Debicki as Diana, opposite Dominic West as Prince Charles.
Back in 2021, showrunner and The Crown creator Peter Morgan has said that he follows a self imposed "20-year rule", preventing him from exploring events in that time frame. But with the rising popularity and the upheaval endured at Buckingham Palace in much more recent memory, the big wigs at Netflix may want this exploring.
Tumblr media

The Crown has been a major hit since it's first airing back in 2016 for both audiences and critics alike. The many faces representing the royals have swept numerous awards over the years and seasons with seven Emmy wins in that time. In 2021, Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies and Gillian Anderson all swept home best actor Emmys for their roles as Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip and Margaret Thatcher respectively.
While season five will air sometime in November 2022, production is still underway for the sixth and final season, and is expected sometime later into 2023.

The War of the Three Theatres: ‘Ah, Poor England! How thou art Distressed with War!’
The Geography of England’s Civil War
Tumblr media
The Battle of Babylon Hill, 1642. Source: Yeovil History
AFTER THE KING’S failure to take London and to end the military conflict before winter set in, it became clear to both sides that they needed to prepare for a long period of hostilities that would stretch well into 1643. Parliament and the Royal Court in Oxford continued to talk, but in the meantime a professionalising of the two opposing forces was essential: particularly the low calibre Parliamentary cavalry, who were no match for the German or aristocratically trained horsemen of the Royal army. Equally the lack of battlefield discipline of the Royalist cavalry was of great concern to the King’s commanders who saw in Rupert’s troopers the greatest asset to the Royal military, but also its greatest liability. In addition to improving the training of their respective inexperienced infantry forces, both sides also reorganised their commands on geographical lines, reflecting the relative strength of their popular support, but also recognising that the war was a truly national endeavour.
This enforced reorganisation over the non campaigning winter months of 1642-43, resulted in the establishment of devolved commands in the North of England, the South West of England, and what might loosely be termed the “centre” of southern England north of London. This latter area of course contained Oxford and most of the area’s counties declared for the King. The Royal forces in the North (Yorkshire, Lancashire and Northumberland), were led by William Cavendish, the Earl of Newcastle while in the South west, they were led by Sir Ralph Hopton. These forces were opposed by the armies of three Parliamentary “Associations” (so named after the Parliamentary Act that had raised them): the Western Association, led by Sir William Waller; the Northern Army, led by Lord Fairfax and his son Thomas, and the Eastern Association, led by Lord Grey. Meanwhile Essex continued to exercise overall command of the Parliamentary war effort, basing himself in the Thames Valley, guarding the approaches to London.
In spring 1643, hostilities recommenced. The first action took place in the north. Cavendish had enjoyed some success against the Fairfaxes the previous December, when after a minor and inconclusive battle at Tadcaster, he was able to force his opponents back to Selby. Newcastle’s position was compromised that winter by the arrival of Queen Henrietta Maria in Bridlington in February 1643, with a vast stock of gunpowder and musketry she had procured from the Dutch at the behest of Charles who was running out of military supplies in Oxford. Although the resourceful Queen’s actions undoubtedly aided her husband, Newcastle had to both protect the royal person, arrange to escort her supplies south, and prosecute the war in the north against Lord Fairfax and his capable son, Thomas. Nonetheless, in April, Newcastle boldly led his forces on Parliamentary controlled York. The Fairfaxes elected not to give battle and instead withdrew their army to Bradford. The Royalist forces pursued the retreating Parliamentarians to besiege Bradford, but were caught napping when the Fairfaxes launched a surprise counter attack on 30th June on the significantly more numerous Royalist army at Adwalton Moor. For a moment it looked as though Ferdinando and Thomas were about to win a famous victory, but Newcastle was able to exploit the Parliamentarians’ over extended lines, outflank their attackers, and force a rapid retreat. This time the Fairfaxes fell back on Hull, effectively surrendering control of the whole of the West Riding of. Yorkshire to the Royalists, including York, Bradford and Leeds, together with the county’s vital coalfields. Hull remained the only significant outstanding Parliamentary outpost in Yorkshire. Newcastle was now in a position to aid the Royal war effort further south.
The intimate nature of the civil war was personified by the commanders of the opposing forces in the west. Sir William Waller, although a strong believer in the role of Parliament, had, until the final breach with the King, more in common with the Constitutional Royalists than he did with Pym’s Puritan radicals. However, despite detesting the war, he had fought at Edgehill and become fully committed to the Parliament’s cause. Sir Ralph Hopton, opposing him, was an even more contradictory figure. Hopton had supported the attainder of Strafford and been a member of the Parliamentary delegation that had presented the Grand Remonstrance to Charles, so his decision to support the King when matters finally came to war was perhaps something of a surprise. To make matters even more personal, Waller and Hopton were friends and former comrades in arms, both having served in the conflicts that led to the Thirty Years’ War. Despite regretful and friendly correspondence between the two in the spring, the fighting in the west was fierce and see sawed across the south west counties. In truth the west was not fertile ground for Parliament as the populaces of both Cornwall and Devon remained steadfastly loyal to the King. After a number of engagements in which the Western Association army had the better of the fighting, Waller marched on Bath. Hopton intercepted his old friend at Lansdown Hill, where he won a hard fought and narrow victory, at the end of which the Royalist general was severely injured in an artillery accident. He was transported at speed to Devizes, closely pursued by Waller, where Hopton’s army was then besieged. Nonetheless the Royalist cavalry was able to break out and reach Oxford, and call for reinforcements. Charles despatched a strong force of cavalry west and, Waller, having been on the verge of victory, now risked being crushed between the advancing Royalist cavalry and Hopton’s forces in Devizes. He therefore decided to bring the matter to battle and drew up his forces at an open plain, flanked by two hills, one of which was named Roundway Down, on 13th July, seeking a decisive engagement.
The Royalist horse, having left Oxford at a gallop, simply continued their surge and charged pell-mell into their Parliamentary counterparts. The Parliamentary infantry were unable to support their mounted colleagues due to the closeness of the fighting and after less than thirty minutes, Walker’s horse broke off the engagement and fled. In a grotesque accident, the fleeing cavalry plunged headlong over a three hundred foot precipice, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of men and horses, and bequeathing the cliff bottom where they landed, the name of “Bloody Ditch”. For once, the Royalist cavalry wheeled and returned to the battlefield to attack the Parliamentary foot. Hopton’s infantry joined them, and the Parliamentarians were hopelessly trapped. Waller’s men died where they stood or fled. The battle of Roundway Down had indeed been decisive, but not in the way Waller, who fled the field and headed for London, had hoped: his Western Association Army had been destroyed.
Taking immediate advantage of the Parliamentary rout at Roundway Down, Prince Rupert advanced from Hertford to invest Bristol. The siege was a hot one and Rupert’s army met stout resistance from the defenders, but the garrison had been denuded of much of its strength by Waller and by the end of the day, with casualties mounting and ammunition running out, the Parliamentary governor, Sir Nathaniel Fiennes, agreed to surrender the city to Rupert in return for safe passage to London for his men. The civilised surrender and the abandonment of Bristol to the ill disciplined and triumphant Royalists, incensed Parliamentary opinion and the unfortunate Fiennes was sentenced to death for cowardice although the sentence was never actually carried out. For the King, Bristol was a huge prize, with a large treasury and eighteen merchant ships together with trading routes west. As autumn 1643 commenced, Parliament was faced with a collapsing military situation and the loss of virtually all the north and west. It is little wonder that Puritan religious opinion began to wonder if God did indeed really favour the Parliament’s war against its monarch.

Fly the flag!
North End return to Deepdale for the first competitive game of the season on Saturday when we host Hull City for what promises to be a grand occasion. North End`s last league game at Deepdale saw a 15,600 crowd and a 4-1 home win against Middlesbrough with the final appearance of Paul Huntingdon bringing some tearful farewells for the Cumbrian Cannavaro. This time we see a changed North End side, on the back of a draw at Wigan last week, hoping that this is not a repeat of the first home game of last season - against Hull City. Following on from the Hull game we travel to Huddersfield on Tuesday evening in the first round of the Carabao Cup and a chance to make some progress in our least favourite competition.
Just to reflect, first of all,on the result at Wigan last Saturday and a staedy start to proceedings for North End but a game, that on reflection this week, we should possibly have won. I thought that young Parrott showed plenty of promise on his debut and the sub appearance of Alvaro Fernandez will certainly have given the manager some food for thought this week with a swashbuckling twenty minutes from the Manchester United loanee at the end of the game at the DW Stadium. Wigan were quite direct and tenacious in their play and I dont really think it suited North Ends pattern of play, but there will be a number of teams in the Championship similar to Wigan in their style of play and we will just have to find a way to get past them as the season goes on.
The visit of the Tigers poses a couple of questions in terms of team selection for Ryan Lowe. Firstly does he stick with the same back three that were on duty at Wigan if Patrick Bauer is 100% fit or will he bring the German back in at the heart of the defence. The pattern of play down the right side was much less effective than down the left at Wigan last week so does he change Bard Potts for Alan Browne at right wing back and bring Ali McCann in midfield? Does he start Fernadez and if he does would he drop Brady to the bench or shove Brady into the midfield at the expense of Daniel Johnson? So much to think about for the manager before he names his side but I think he might well go with the eleven that started at Wigan. Hopefully home advantage will see more confidence on the ball and we will not see possession overturned as much as it was last week particularly in the centre of the Park.
The changes in personnel, depending on the result and injury situation of course, may well come at Huddersfield on Tuesday evening when one or two of those who were on the bench at Wigan may get a full 90 minutes to stake their claim. I saw the Terriers against Burnley last Friday evening on TV and I thought they were a shadow of the side who reached the play offs last season with a number of changes both on and off the field. The league game last season saw Huddersfield beat North End without having a shot on target due to an unfortunate own goal from Sepp Van Den Berg. It was North Ends third defeat on the trot and got the seaon off to a shocker of a start and something that I feel we never recovered from. Having never reached the last 8 in the history of the competition maybe this will be the season when we finally make some sort of inroad into the League Cup, however Im not really holding my breath on that one.
And finally this week:- the Hull game sees the introduction of the flag initiative for home games which is the brainchild of the forum, Pne-Online, and a new fans group, Northendsouls. I know that John Kelly, who runs Pne-online, has worked tireless over the Summer to get this initiative up and running and I would encourage everyone who fancies waiving the flags and creating a Carnival atmosphere to fully embrace this initiative and highlight to those in charge at Deepdale just how much the fans are behind the club. The Season Ticket campaign was an outstanding success and this flag initiative just builds on and compliments the work done by many fans and fans groups in the close season to put North End on the map.

Cyprus – Sought-After Destination For Divers
Diving at the wreck of the ship known as Zenobia is, for many divers, a highlight. The wreck is located 1.5km from Cyprus’s Larnaca harbor, where it came to its sad end on its maiden voyage in June 1980.
ZENOBIA – SOME FACTS
Zenobia was a cargo ship that left on its first voyage from Malmo in Sweden, from where it was meant to carry trucks, trailers, and other cargo and goods to Syria in the Middle East. Unfortunately, the first signs of distress were noticed when it stopped in Greece, where it was established that the ship was taking in some water. When it reached Larnaca, Cyprus, it was in big trouble and could not be saved. It sank and rests 42m from the surface of the ocean.
DIVING AT ZENOBIA
Diving at Zenobia is one of those items that many divers want to tick off their bucket list. The wreck has a certain allure among divers: it is huge, visibility in and around the wreck is generally great, and the sea life around the wreck is amazing. Divers often see lionfish, groupers, triggerfish, barracudas, sea bream, and parrotfish around the wreck. Today the wreck rests on her port side and has become one of the top ten wreck attractions for divers worldwide. Because of the generally good weather around the island, and because visibility often allows the diver to see 50m ahead, this wreck offers, in addition to its sad history, great diving for different skill levels.
Divers who explore her starboard side will find that they can dive between 16 and 20 meters, which means even the inexperienced diver will be able to access her. You may see different props, lifeboats, and even the bridge. Divers may see the propellor and the cranes and ramp for cargo to be moved. You may also see a cage with the remains of animals that went down with the ship, vehicles such as trucks, the canteen, and some of the rooms. Indeed a worthwhile visit if shipwrecks interest you.
NOT ALTERED
Fortunately, Zenobia has not been altered to accommodate divers. No large holes have been made in her hull for divers to enter and exit with greater ease. This means you explore the wreck as she was when she went under, which is part of the excitement for the experienced diver and for the novice a great introduction to the world of scuba diving at a world-famous shipwreck.
The government has put in place systems that recognize the site where Zenobia rests as a protected artificial reef. This means no fishing is allowed, which allows ample sea life and the different species you find there. You may also come across turtles and octopuses during the summer months, for instance. Because of the great visibility, the area around the Zenobia wreck lends itself to great sea and underwater photography and videography.
PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
How do you get there? Cyprus is a well-developed tourist destination that offers great opportunities to relax, shop at the local markets, explore the island by car – and enjoy excellent diving. Getting there is easy. If Zenobia, specifically, is of great interest, then fly to Larnaca Airport from where you can transfer to your hotel or other accommodation. Short boat rides from the harbor take you to the wreck.
DIVING INSTRUCTION
When you visit Cyprus, it is good to know that you have a choice of diving instruction services or facilities. Some of them are excellent and offer visitors several diving courses, some of which are at Zenobia – ideal for the person who just started, or for the experienced diver who wants to team up with a great diving centre. Diving instruction courses are truly valuable if you want to make the most of your diving trip. Also, it can add to the best memories of your visit to Cyprus.

The room in which I'm staying in Hull has a writing bureau! I am utterly delighted! It's such a nice place, Trinity Backpackers, it has a cute 'n' cosy little kitchen and a welcoming reception area filled with books and bright colours. It's located in the old part of the town called, fittingly, Old Town, and is just around the corner from the Minster. I'll be popping in there later today, to say my prayers to Jesus (hallelujah! Lord have mercy!) and also have a nosey around the waterfront. Hull is by no means crap (see hypothesis in earlier post) although it doesn't have an M & S food hall in the city centre, so I am going to have to mark it down for that. It does have some fairly decent charity shops, though (will go hunting for second hand books later today) and the central library has an impressive collection of history books and an amazingly quiet study space tucked away above the Music Library section, it's hidden away on a mezzanine and is pure peace. If I lived in Hull I would go there all the time. So, my conclusion is: Hull is not crap at all.

Antarctica: Southern Ocean floor mapped in greatest ever detail
Tumblr media
Scientists have made the most precise map yet of the mountains, canyons and plains that make up the floor of Antarctica's encircling Southern Ocean.
Covering 48 million sq km (18.5 million sq miles), this chart for the first time details a new deepest point - a depression lying 7,432m (24,383ft) down called the Factorian Deep.
Knowledge of the shape of the ocean's bottom is essential to safe navigation, marine conservation, and understanding Earth's climate and geological history.
But we still have much to learn.
Vast tracts of terrain have never been properly surveyed.
The International Bathymetric Chart of the Southern Ocean (IBCSO) has taken five years to compile and updates the first attempt at a comprehensive map, which was published in 2013.
The IBCSO project and others like it around the world are gradually filling in the gaps in our scant knowledge of the bottom of the world's oceans.
Ships and boats are being encouraged to routinely turn on their sonar devices to get depth (bathymetric) measurements; and governments, corporations, and institutions are being urged not to hide away data and put as much as possible into the public domain. This is paying dividends.
The new map covers all the Southern Ocean floor poleward of 50 degrees South. If you divide its 48 million sq km into 500m grid squares, 23% of these cells now have at least one modern depth measurement.
That's a big improvement on nine years ago.
Tumblr media
Back then, IBCSO began only at 60 degrees South, and less than 17% of its grid boxes had a modern measurement.
"You have to realise just what the change from 60 degrees to 50 degrees means; we've more than doubled the area of the chart," said Dr Boris Dorschel from Germany's Alfred Wegener Institute.
"So, we've increased the area coverage, but we've also increased the data density, because, in parallel, we've kept on acquiring new data and knocking on doors to free up existing data," he told BBC News.
Much of the information in the chart comes from the ice-strengthened ships that support scientific endeavours in Antarctica, including from the UK's former polar ship, the RRS James Clark Ross. (In future, this British contribution will come from its successor, the RRS Sir David Attenborough, affectionately known as Boaty McBoatface.)
As these vessels shuttle back and forth between the White Continent and the likes of Chile, South Africa and Tasmania - their echosounders make a habit of surveying the submerged terrain below.
And this activity is increasingly coordinated, with research organisations from different nations working together to try to offset slightly the routes taken by their icebreakers.

The UK's new polar ship, the RRS Sir David Attenborough, is equipped to map millions of sq km of ocean bottom over its career. The above image shows the ship's hull in dry dock. The yellow rectangle in the centre is a cover made of a synthetic material over the 8m-long array of transmitting transducers for the deep-water multibeam echosounding system.
Better seafloor maps are needed for a host of reasons.
They are essential for safe navigation, obviously, but also for fisheries management and conservation, because it is around the underwater mountains that marine wildlife tends to congregate. Each seamount is a biodiversity hotspot.
In addition, the rugged seafloor influences the behaviour of ocean currents and the vertical mixing of water. This is information required to improve the models that forecast future climate change - because it is the oceans that play a pivotal role in moving heat around the planet.
"We can also study how the Antarctic Ice Sheet has changed over thousands of years just by looking at the seafloor," explained Dr Rob Larter from the British Antarctic Survey.
"There's a record of where the ice flowed and where its grounded zones (places in contact with the seafloor) extended. This is beautifully preserved in the shape of the seafloor."
The new map was made possible by financing from Japan's Nippon Foundation and the support from Seabed2030, the international effort to properly chart Earth's ocean floor by the end of the decade.

At the moment, our knowledge of four-fifths of the planet's underwater terrain comes only from low-resolution satellite measurements that have inferred the presence of tall seamounts and deep valleys from the gravitational influence these features have on the sea surface. Water piles up over the mass of a large submarine mountain and dips slightly where there is a trench.
One key finding in the years between the first and second versions of IBCSO is the recognition of the Southern Ocean's deepest point. It's a depression called Factorian Deep at the far southern end of the South Sandwich Trench. It lies 7,432m down. It was measured and visited by the Texan adventurer Victor Vescovo in his submarine Limiting Factor in 2019.
The remote and often inhospitable nature of the Southern Ocean means substantial sections of it are unlikely to get mapped unless there is dedicated undertaking. There's high hope that an emerging class of robotic vessels could be given this task in the years ahead.

Egypt The very first tape-recorded appearance of warships is on the Nile River, where Egypt's history has actually centred because antiquity. These boats were developed of packages of reeds lashed together to form a narrow, sharp-ended hull and coated with pitch, and they were barely suited for tempestuous seas. By 3000 bce larger wooden seagoing versions of the reed craft cruised for distant travelling, trade, and conquest.
2600 bce, based on vessels depicted in the bas-relief discovered in the pyramid of King Sahure at Ab r, Cairo. Thanks to the Science Museum, London Egyptian wooden ships had both oars and sails, being fitted with a bipod (inverted V) mast and a single, large, square sail. The entire mast could be decreased when under oars.

At some point in the 2nd millennium bce the commodious merchantman progressed as a beamy "round ship" powered by sails and emphasizing cargo capacity at the expenditure of speed. By contrast, the fast fighting "long ship" was narrower, quicker, and more nimble than the tubby cargo ship. Establishing as both predator on and protector of maritime trade and seaside cities, it hoisted its sails for travelling but depended upon oars when in action.
The greatly pointed or "beaked" bows suggest an focus on the tactical use of the ram. Starting about 1100 bce, the Phoenicians dominated the eastern Mediterranean for about 3 centuries. Info about Phoenician ships is fragmentary, but they appear to have been constructed mainly for trading, with a capability to eliminate successfully if required.
